IMPACT OF USING STUDENT GENERATED MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS IN LEARNING PHYSIOLOGY

Introduction: In order to write MCQs students need to use high order thinking skills. In a question generating process as a learning exercise students are required to process, organize, integrate and reconstruct knowledge which improves meta cognitive development and encourages higher order thinking. The current study has been conducted in Jorhat medical college, Department of Physiology. 125 students of rstMethod: year MBBS were instructed to write twenty multiple choice questions on respiratory system after conducting a pretest based on same topic. The MCQs were analyzed by expert faculties and some best quality questions were picked up from them and one post test was conducted using those MCQs. The individual score of the students in both pretest and posttest were compared statistically. In addition feedback from the students about their experience was collected by distributing a questionnaire. The performance of the students in the posttest was better than the pretest.Result: Majority of students found the task helpful as it helped them in deeper learning of the content. The better performance in posttest andConclusion: the feedback obtained from the participant students has reected that this type of educational variations can be introduced in the learning process of the healthcare education.

Teenage Pregnancy and its Outcomes in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Assam

Background: Teenage pregnancy is one of the determinants of high maternal morbidity and mortality. Assam is known for its highest contribution of maternal death in India. In Assam, around 31% of teenage girls get married before the age of 18, and around 12% teenage girls become mothers before they turn out to be 18 years. Objectives: The objective of this study is to know the maternal and fetal outcomes of teenage pregnancy and its determinants in a tertiary care setting in Assam. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 118 teenage mothers admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital from June to August 2019. Required data on sociodemographic characteristics of the mother, antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal histories, and maternal and fetal outcomes of the pregnancy, were collected in predesigned and pretested schedule. Data analysis was done using Microsoft Excel software. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee. Results: Among the 118 teenage mothers which constitute 14.6% of total deliveries conducted during the study period, 61% were anemic during pregnancy and 75.42% of teenagers had term delivery while 19.49% had either preterm or postterm deliveries. Cesarean section was done for 50.85% of pregnancies and 45.77% of teenage mothers had complications such as eclampsia, prolonged labor, cephalopelvic disproportion, and premature rupture of membrane during labor. About 42.73% of the newborns were found to be low birth weight babies. A statistically significant association was found between determinants such as lower socioeconomic class, younger age at marriage, less education of mothers, lack of knowledge about contraceptives, and teenage pregnancy. Conclusion: Our study findings indicated a high percentage of teenage pregnancy and increased complications among teenage mothers and newborns.

CLINICO-MICROBIOLOGICAL STUDY OF PATIENTS WITH ACUTE EXACERBATION OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the third leading cause of death worldwide. COPD patients are frequently colonised with potential respiratory pathogens. Use of empirical antibiotics without proper investigations in acute exacerbation leads to emerging resistant strains. Aim: This study is aimed to record the clinical profile of patients with acute exacerbation of COPD with special reference to microbiological profile so that early adequate treatment can be given. Material and Methods: This observational cross sectional study was conducted on 104 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD admitted in Medicine department of Jorhat Medical college and hospital from 1st July 2020 to 30th June 2021.After written informed consent detailed history,spirometry, sputum culture and sensitivity with AFB, Gram and fungal staining, chest X- ray, blood parameters and ECG were done. Result: COPD is common above 40 years of age with male predominance (63.46%).36.54% were active smoker,25% were ex smoker and 38.46% were non smoker. Positive bacteriological culture was obtained in 32.69% of cases, commonest organism being Klebsiella pneumoniae (24%)followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1.92%), Escherichia coli.(0.96%)and Citrobacter freundii(0.96%).32% of Klebsiella pneumoniae,40% of Klebsiella oxytoca and 100% of Citrobacter were found to be multidrug resistant strain. Conclusion : Gram negative bacteria were more frequently isolated in our study. Early antimicrobial treatment reduces the increasing burden of COPD.

A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF SUDDEN NATURAL DEATH CASES BROUGHT FOR AUTOPSY AT JORHAT MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL, JORHAT, ASSAM

Background- From the very ancient time, sudden death always amused as well as agonised the man. In the epic Mahabharata, sudden and unexpected death was mentioned in the demise of King Pandu as he forgot the curse from sage while captivated by the beauty of Madri. Very often, the person was apparently normal till he died suddenly and pre-existing disease conditions might not have been diagnosed earlier. Medico-legal autopsy should be done to determine the exact cause of death and to rule out any foul play. Relevant data about the incidence and causes of sudden natural death will aid in the planning of health programs at community level. Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of sudden natural death cases which were brought for medico-legal autopsy at Jorhat Medical College & Hospital during the one year period from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021 was studied. The incidence of sudden natural death isResults: 15.95% with male to female ratio 10.2 : 1. Most common age group involved in the study was 51-60 years followed by 31-40 years. Cardiovascular system (CVS) is the most commonly affected system (43.56%) followed by gastro-intestinal system (31.68%). Coronary artery disease is the main cause of cardiovascular deaths and also tops among all causes of sudden natural deaths. The incidence of suddenConclusion: natural death is 16.01%. Males having age 51-60 years are most commonly affected. Cardiovascular diseases contribute to most of the sudden natural deaths of which Coronary artery disease is the leading cause. Increased awareness with regular health checkups is needed among the population at risk so as to improve quality of life.

ACUTE ENCEPHALITIS SYNDROME IN A TERTIARY CARE SETTING WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS: AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY IN ASSAM, INDIA

Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) is a major public health problem and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) is one of the most important causes of AES. Therefore, it is crucial to know the etiology of AES for patient management and decision making. The present study aimed to assess the morbidity and mortality prole of AES/JE patients admitted in tertiary care setting. An observational prospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 140 hospitalized AES patients admitted in Pediatric and Medicine ward of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), Jorhat over a period from August, 2017 to July 2018. Blood serum and cerebrospinal uids (CSF) were tested for presence of JE specic IgM antibody by Mac ELISA during acute illness of AES. The data were compiled and analyzed using the IBM SPSS, V23.0. Of the total 140 AES cases, majority (60%) were below 15 years age (p-value 0.180). Signicantly higher proportion of AES cases were from rural areas (94.3%) (p-value <0.0001). The male and female ratio was 1.3:1. The most common presenting symptoms in AES patients were fever (100%), change in mental status (100%), seizure (56.4%) and headache (42.9%). Signs of meningeal irritation were present in 69.3% of cases. Around 22.9% AES patients had GCS ≤ 8. A total 49 (35%) cases were found to be laboratory conrmed JE following detection of JE specic IgM antibody. Among the JE patients, only 4.1% were immunized with SA 14-14-2 vaccine and 14% died before discharge. The complete recoveries were observed in 78% of cases. JE is one of the major causes of AES which is highly prevalent in this part of India. The signicant ndings in the present study calls for policy decision to combat JE.

A prospective study evaluating utility of Mannheim peritonitis index in predicting the outcome of peritonitis following hollow viscus perforation

Background: Gastrointestinal perforations account for about 25% of acute abdominal emergencies. Despite advancements in diagnosis, management and critical care of patients due to hollow viscus perforation, the prognosis remains worrisome as the overall mortality rate due to perforation peritonitis is 6 to 27%. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prognostic value of Mannheim peritonitis index scoring system in patients with perforation peritonitis, to assess it as a clinical tool in stratifying these patients according to individual surgical risk.Methods: A prospective study of 58 patients with peritonitis due to non-traumatic hollow viscus perforation who presented to the department of general surgery, Jorhat medical college hospital, Jorhat from June 2020 to May 2021. The structured scoring system of MPI was applied along with other clinical and biochemical parameters recorded in pre-structured proforma. The study patients were divided into three groups according to MPI score. Group 1: MPI score less than 21, group 2 MPI score in between 21-29, and group 3 MPI score more than 29. Data was analysed for predicting the outcome by using IBM statistics SPSS software 21.0 version.Results: MPI scores of <21, 21-29, and >29 had a morbidity of 27.6%, 51.7% and 20.7% respectively. No mortality in patients with MPI less than 21; whereas those patients with MPI score more than 29 had the highest mortality rate of 60%. Patient with MPI score 21 to 29 had mortality rate of 40%. The number of post-operative complications, duration of ICU and hospital stay proportionately increased with the MPI score.Conclusions: MPI is an independent, disease specific, easier to calculate with very minimum basic investigations, simple and effective objective scoring system in predicting the morbidity and mortality.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HEMOGLOBIN AND PLATELET COUNT AMONG MBBS STUDENTS

Introduction: Haemoglobin is the red colour pigment present inside RBC. All the blood components are derived from the haematopoietic stem cells of the same bone marrow. Factors affecting the bone marrow also affects all the cells including the haemoglobin level and the platelet count. Less is known on the relationship between low or high level of haemoglobin on platelet count. This work was therefore carried out to determine this relationship. Materials And Methods: The study was done in Dept. of Physiology, Jorhat Medical College. Study population included 100 undergraduate medical students of age 18-25 years . Haemoglobin Estimation & Platelet Count will be measured by ACCUREX ACCULAB CBC 360+ HEMATOLOGY Analyser Machine. Ethical Clearance was obtained from Institutional Ethical Committee (H), Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat. Students unpaired t- test was used to compare the mean values of study variables and other parameters in relation to the study. The P value <0.05 was considered as significant. Results: We found that mean Hb count is 10.91±1.05 and 10.22±0.83 respectively when platelet count in between 1.5- 2.5 lakhs/mm3 and >2.5 lakhs/mm3. Mean Platelet count came 2.59±0.58 lakhs/mm3 and 1.89±0.62 respectively when Hb between 9 – 11 gm/dl and >11 gm/dl. Conclusion: The reason for the relationship between low and high platelet count on hemoglobin level may be linked to the normal physiology of hematopoiesis where the origin of all blood components occurs in the bone marrow. This leaves scope for further research to use in therapy like Plateletpheresis where lower hemoglobin concentrations meant higher platelet yield and vice versa.

RELATIONSHIP OF ELECTROCARDIOGRAM VARIABLES WITH BLOOD PRESSURE IN UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL STUDENTS.

INTRODUCTION: Across the world the prevalence of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases are increasing at an alarming rate. These diseases also affect the young age and medical students are no exception. In this study, ECG variables like R-R interval, QRS Axis of the medical students along with their Blood pressure were recorded and the relationship between ECG variables and Blood pressure was studied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done in Dept. of Physiology, Jorhat Medical College .Sample size was calculated as 160 using EpiTools Software. Recording of Electrocardiogram and Blood pressure of 160 students were done and saved for further analysis. P values were calculated by Anova test in case of more than two variables,. Scatter diagrams were used to see the relationship between study variables. The P value <0.05 was considered as signicant. RESULTS: Comparison of ECG Variables between hypotensive, normotensive and hypertensive students showed that R-R Interval decreased signicantly from 21.37±4.24 in hypotensives to 19.74±3.39 in normotensives and 18.27±4.07 in hypertensive students. QRS Axis decreased from 75.35±10.99 degrees in hypotensives to 54.80±34.94 degrees in normotensives and 50.43±25.59 degrees in hypertensive students. CONCLUSION: Changing of life style that includes reduced consumption of fat rich diets, fast foods, red meat and salt, performing regular physical exercises, and regular health check up in the form of Blood pressure and Electrocardiogram recording could be benecial for the students to identify and take preventive measures against any cardiovascular ailments.

BACKGROUND Covid-19, which is usually transmitted from droplet exposure, proved out to be a novel disease of human race. It is still unclear whether the new coronavirus can transmit in any other ways, but it can be detected in nasal swabs, sputum, respiratory secretions, blood, stool, and other samples. Early detection and prompt intervention play a vital role in reducing the number and severity of cases. METHODS Our study sample consisted of 100 patients from the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Jorhat Medical College & Hospital (JMCH) diagnosed as Covid-19 from April 2020 to March 2021. Reviewing of chest CT images with clinical data was done and analysis of its relationship was reviewed. All the cases underwent thin-slice HRCT for at least a single time. RESULTS The most common CT findings observed were ground glass opacity (91%), consolidation (63%), and inter & intra lobular septal thickening (59%). We encountered multiple lesions, with an average of 13 ± 5 pulmonary segments infected. CONCLUSIONS Computed tomography thus, has a pivotal role in the prognostication of Covid-19 pneumonia which is an emergency global health epidemic. It helps us to detect and analyse the common chest manifestation of Covid-19 vis; consolidation, ground glassing, septalthickening, subpleural bands and occasional pleural effusions. Incidence of midline neck mass (A retrospective cyto-morphological study, at Jorhat Medical College, Assam)

Introduction: Midline neck mass presents varying degrees of enlargements in front of the neck encompasses thyroglossal duct/cyst, solitary thyroid cyst, thyroid neoplasm.Objective: To find out the incidence of midline mass by FNAC in Jorhat Medical College & Hospital from the period October 2020 to September 2021.Materials and Method: one year retrospective, qualitative cross sectional, observational study done in 72 nos.of different cases of midline mass and FNAC was the first mode of examination in all cases referred to us.Result: Reporting of the cases was followed by New Bethesda system of reporting thyroid cytopathology (TBSRTC) which offers very clean concept clinically well explainable to our clinician. On FNAC reporting 60-70% of cases had simple colloid goiter, followed by hyperthyroidism that was associated with huge nodularity and thyrotoxic features.Few cases of AUS/FLUS were reported as per criteria laid down by TBSRTC Bethesda grading.Conclusion: In this study, goiter in females which constitute nearly 70-80% between the 3rd and 4th decades of life. FNAC resulted with 97 % sensitivity about 95 % specificity with high Positive predictive value. FNAC found to be most economical, quick and gold standard, easy to interpret by both the pathologist and the clinician till date.

Diagnostic Performance of O-RADS MRI Scoring System for the Assessment of Adnexal Masses in Routine Clinical Radiology Practice- A Single Tertiary Centre Prospective Cohort Study

Introduction: In 2019-20, the American College of Radiology (ACR) introduced Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System Magnetic Resonance Imaging (O-RADS MRII). Application of the O-RADS MRI in routine clinical practice can increase lesion characterization accuracy, promote better interdisciplinary communication, and help in personalized patient management of adnexal masses. Aim: To assess the diagnostic performance of the ACR O-RADS MRI scoring system for the predicting malignancy in adnexal mass in routine clinical radiology practice by using histology/ imaging findings during a minimum 4 month follow-up as the reference standard. Materials and Methods: In this single- tertiary center prospective cohort study done in Jorhat Medical College, Assam, 42 patients with 46 adnexal masses who underwent MRI between April 2020 and June 2021 were assessed. The ACR O-RADS MR scores were assigned using the MRI protocol with a dynamic study. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values along with the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve were calculated (cut-off score ≥4 was considered malignancy,). Histopathologic diagnosis or >4 months followup imaging findings was the reference standard used. Logistic regression analysis of MRI parameters used in identifying malignant masses was assessed. Statistical analysis was done using 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The p-values <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean age of subjects in the study was 35.9 (range 10-75 years), and 84.8% of adnexal masses (39) were premenopausal. Malignancy was more common in postmenopausal patients (57.1%). Of 46 lesions, 13 (33.3%) were malignant. The ACR O-RADS-MR scoring system, using a dynamic MRI protocol, showed 92.3% sensitivity and 87.8%specificity in malignancy prediction. The area under the ROC curve for predicting malignancy was 0.962. The positive and negative predictive values were 75% and 89.1%, respectively. Conclusion: In a teaching hospital in assam, the O-RADS MRI scoring system, based on a dynamic MRI protocol demonstrated good sensitivity, specificity and area under the Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve in identifying malignant adnexal masses. The ACR O-RADS MRI system enables standardized MRI reporting with uniform lexicon and interpretation guide on adnexal masses.This will help to improve communication between radiologists and referring physician and in patient management, particularly in indeterminate masses on ultrasound.

Knowledge and practices towards road safety measures among intern and resident doctors: a cross-sectional study

Background: In spite of ongoing commitment and efforts, road traffic accidents continue to be a leading cause of death and disabilities in India. Adequate knowledge on road safety measures among budding doctors can create awareness and provide preventive counselling to their clients. An attempt was made to assess the knowledge and practices about road safety measures among intern and resident doctors working in tertiary care setting.Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 168 young doctors of Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat, Assam.Results: Among the enrolled study participants 54% were intern and 46% were resident doctors. More than half of the participants were male. Knowledge on different, road signs among the young doctors ranges in between 68% to 99%. The dangerous effects of alcohol consumption while driving/riding were known to 93% of the participants. While riding two wheels, only 58% always use helmet with belt and 33% sometimes use mobile phone. Regarding exceed in speed limit in two wheels, 11 (17%) participants informed that they surpass the speed limit and among them 10 (26%) were males which was found to be statistically significant. Among four-wheelers, 48% always use seat belt and 49% sometimes use mobile phone while driving. During four-wheel driving, 21% participants were involved in occasional drinking/smoking and it was found significantly higher in males.Conclusions: The study revealed that in spite of having adequate knowledge about road safety measures, intern and resident doctors are poor in practicing which warrant motivational and counselling intervention.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SERUM ASCORBATE BETWEEN NEWLY DIAGNOSED TYPE 2 DIABETICS AND LONG STANDING TYPE 2 DIABETICS ON TREATMENT

Introduction: diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder prevalent worldwide . Oxidative stress has been the Cause of complications which arises gradually due to prolonged hyperglycemia. Vitamin c being a potent antioxidant is well consumed in diabetes mellitus. Methods: Serum samples of diabetes mellitus type 2 patients from jorhat medical college of Assam were tested to estimate ascorbate levels using spectrophotometer. Whole blood samples were tested to estimate glycated hemoglobin levels in d-10 biorad hplc machine. A total of 58 patients and equal numbers of age and sex matched apparently healthy controls were included. Results: significantly lower levels of ascorbate were recorded in diabetic cases compared to controls. Newly diagnosed cases had lesser serum ascorbate levels compared to patients who were on treatment with oral hypoglycemic drugs and insulin. Conclusion: the study was done to look for any alteration in serum ascorbic acid levels in diabetes mellitus patients. Patients newly diagnosed had lesser vitamin c levels compared to patients already on medications. It is found that vitamin c is significantly lower in diabetic patients with or without medications compared to healthy controls.

THYROID HORMONE ABNORMALITY IN PATIENTS WITH ACUTE STROKE- A HOSPITAL BASED CASE CONTROL STUDY

Introduction: Stroke or Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a major cause of disability worldwide. The estimation of serum Total T3, Total T4 and TSH are very much essential in patients with stroke. Any disturbances in thyroid hormones may have negative influence on the outcome of acute phase of strokes. Aims And Objectives: Aims and objective was to estimate the Total T3, Total T4 and TSH of patients with acute Stroke and to compare it with age/sex matched healthy controls. Materials & Methods: This Hospital Based Case Control Study, consist of total 100 subjects out of which 50 were control ,was carried out in Jorhat Medical College & Hospital, Assam for a period of one year, from July 2017 to June 2018. Age more than 40 years of both sexes was included. Estimation for total T3, total T4, and TSH was carried out in Access 2 ImmunoAssay Systems (Beckman Coulter). Cases were selected randomly . Results And Observations: Out of 50 Stroke patients ,the age group of 50 - <60 years constituted the majority of cases(32%) . Greater preponderance of stroke was seen in males (62%) with male to female ratio of 1.63:1. Hemorrhagic stroke was found to be more common than ischemic stroke (54% V/s 46%). Hemorrhagic strokes occurred more in early age than ischemic strokes. The mean ± SD of serum Total T3 levels in stroke patients and controls were 0.960 ± 0.327 and 1.248 ± 0.269 respectively, with statistically significant mean value difference (p<0.05) when cases were compared to the controls. A greater number of low T3 was present in ischemic strokes (43.5%) when compared to hemorrhagic strokes (18.5%). Conclusion: Nonthyroidal illness syndrome (Low T3 syndrome) is observed in the present study with decreased T3 values without alteration of T4 and TSH levels. Further studies with a large sample size should attempt to investigate whether treatment of low T3 syndrome can improve the final outcome.

BACKGROUND There has been an increased rate of diagnosis of alcohol dependent syndrome (ADS) observed in our psychiatry clinic constituting a major portion of them into inpatients care. Evaluation of psychiatric complaints in patients with alcohol dependant syndrome is challenging at times. Depression has been found to be a common psychological association seen in them. Suicidality and other selfharming behaviour as a co morbidity are also not uncommon. There is dearth of information available on occurrence of alcohol dependent syndrome in psychiatry attendees and pattern of alcohol use especially from this part of north-eastern region of Assam. We wanted to assess the occurrence and pattern of alcohol use disorder amongst patients attending psychiatry unit of a tertiary care centre in upper Assam, estimate its bed occupancy rate, and determine psychiatric comorbidity among them. METHODS A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted among 104 consecutive subjects attending Psychiatry department of Jorhat Medical College, Assam. After thorough examination and informed written consent subjects were administered with alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT) and MINI plus. Semi structured socio demographic Proforma was used to collect information on demographic data and different variables. As it was a descriptive study, data collected were organized in frequency tables and analysed using percentage. RESULTS In present study, prevalence of alcohol dependent syndrome in psychiatry set up was 12.68 % and bed occupancy rate of ADS was 13 %. Majority were between the age 28 and 47 years, males, Hindus, married, belonged to nuclear family and hailed from upper lower social class followed by lower middle class. Approximately 18 % of cases had psychiatric co morbidity and majority of them had depression and suicidality. CONCLUSIONS A major number of alcohol dependant patients attended psychiatry OPD and occupied almost half of the beds as inpatients of a tertiary care hospital. Mood disorder was the commonest comorbid condition in these patients. Though the results cannot be generalized, it may definitely reflect the magnitude of alcohol use in this region. Hence forth a psychiatry unit like ours warrant a full-fledged department for treatment of ADS and alcohol related problems and some policy to work for its prevention. RELATIONSHIP OF BODY MASS INDEX WITH PULMONARY PARAMETERS IN UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL STUDENTS.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity, a chronic non-communicable disease, as indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO), is one of the most rapidly growing health problems worldwide. Obesity affects the respiratory functions and impairs the gas exchange, leading to alterations in pulmonary function tests (PFT).Younger generation and medical students are no exception in regards to the detrimental effects of obesity.Forced vital capacity (FVC),Forced Expiratory st Volume in 1 second (FEV ), Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) are reliable pulmonary function tests to diagnose any 1 respiratory disorder.In this study,FVC,FEV ,PEFR of medical students were assessed to find their relationship with Body 1 Mass Index (BMI). MATERIALS AND METHODS:A institution based cross-sectional observational study was done in Dept.of Physiology,Jorhat Medical College including the undergraduate medical students.Sample size was calculated as 160 using EpiTools Software.Height in centimeters,weight in kilograms and digital spirometry of 160 students were recorded. In case of more than two variables, P values were calculated using Anova Test and p value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: FVC,FEV ,PEFR all were decreased in overweight and obese students compared to 1 normal weight students and our observation was statistically significant in case of FEV and PEFR by Anova test (p value: 1 0.0335 and 0.0428 respectively. CONCLUSION: Changing of life style that includes performing regular physical exercises,yoga,meditation,sticking to a routine time table for sports,study and sleeping hours and regular health check up in the form of Height,Weight, Spirometry could be beneficial for the students to prevent obesity related pulmonary ailments.

INTRODUCTION OF CASE BASED LEARNING IN UNDERGRADUATE PATHOLOGY TEACHING.

Pathology is a subject which bridges the basic medical sciences with clinical sciences in medical education. The undergraduate pathology classes in our Medical Colleges usually include didactic lectures, conventional practical and tutorial classes. The subject of Pathology can be made more interesting for the students by developing in them a proper understanding of the pathologic basis of disease at the 2nd MBBS level with clinical co-relation. One of the innovative method which can be used in this regard is case-based learning. I undertook this project to introduce case-based learning in undergraduate pathology teaching at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Jorhat for the second MBBS students. Both student's and teacher’s feedback were evaluated concerning their perceptions towards the method, its conduct and the various aspects of CBL.

A Study on Patient Satisfaction among the Patients Admitted in the In-Patient Departments of a Tertiary Health Care Institution in North East India

Introduction: Tertiary care hospital should be able to provide best possible health care to patients. The study was conducted to determine the patient satisfaction of IPD patients seeking treatment in Jorhat Medical College and Hospitals and to compare the level of satisfaction of the patients across selected departments.
 Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted between July to August 2018 among the patients admitted in the IPD of Jorhat Medical College & Hospitals. Multistage random sampling was first done to select departments of the medical college. Then stratified sampling technique with proportionate allocation was used to select patients from these respective departments. Finally, systematic sampling technique was used to select respondents from among the inpatients of the selected departments.
 Results: Satisfaction regarding physical facilities like cleanliness of the wards (79.64%), toilets (51.96%), availability of drugs (59.28%), quality of food and water etc (55.71%) were of major concern. The satisfaction level is statistically significant with bio social characteristics like background (p= 0.0002), sex (p= 0.0356) and socioeconomic status (p= 0.077).
 Conclusion: Assessing satisfaction of patients is simple and cost effective way for evaluation of hospital services.

Clinico-epidemiological features of Japanese encephalitis patients hospitalized in a tertiary care center

Background: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is of particular interest as it has a high morbidity and mortality. Neurological sequale is the most dreaded damage caused by JE. It is a preventable disease with specific interventions. The objective of the study was to study the demography, clinical profile and outcome of patients with Japanese Encephalitis admitted to the wards of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Jorhat Medical College Hospital.Methods: Hospital based observational study for one year in Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat, Assam.Results: The mean age for JE was 32.25±27 years for male, 27.47±22 years for female and 29.94±24 years overall. Assessment of clinical signs and symptoms showed that fever and change in mental status were present in 100% of JE cases followed by neck rigidity in 79.3% and headache in 68.9%. 44.8% of JE cases had history of seizure, 37.9% had vomiting, 34.5% had irritability, 13.8% were unconscious. The peak of JE incidence occurred in the month of July (77.6%). Complete recovery was seen in 39.2%, followed by death in 32.6% and recovery with neurological sequalae in 28.2% at the time of discharge.Conclusions: Vigorous awareness activities should be carried out to sensitize people on prevention of JE.
