Exploring the Financial Leakages in the Classified Hotels in Jordan: A Managerial Perspective

ABSTRACTThe study aimed to provide a better understanding of financial leakages in a sample of classified hotels in Jordan in terms of its reasons, its channels, and potential ways to reduce it from hotel managers’ perspective. Eighteen semistructured interviews were conducted with hotel managers. The results showed a high level of awareness regarding financial leakages by hotel managers. Furthermore, the main reasons for financial leakages included: the high cost of energy, the need to import products not produced locally, and the lack of awareness of sustainability practices. The main channels of financial leakages were: importing furniture and electronics, human resources, and food and beverages not produced in Jordan. The study’s main suggestions are to reduce financial leakages, especially energy consumption, and to increase trust in local products.

The Influence of Employee Empowerment on Employee Job Satisfaction in Five-Star Hotels in Jordan

This paper examines the influence of empowerment on job satisfaction in five-star hotels in Jordan. The influence of empowerment on job satisfaction remains a relatively unexplored area. A 52-item questionnaire, measuring empowerment and job satisfaction, was distributed to 332 employees in 12 five-star hotels in Jordan with a 56% response rate. Principal components analysis determined the factor structure and regression analysis determined the influence of empowerment on job satisfaction. The results revealed both structural and psychological empowerment have significant individual influences on job satisfaction, but more significant when structural and psychological empowerment are combined. Most of previous studies were conducted in western economies and little in the Middle East generally and Jordan in particular. This research contributes to the literature by including both dimensions of empowerment where previous scholars used only one.

Extent of Staff Professional Ethical on Customers' Commitment in Hotel Industry: An Empirical Study - Three-star Hotels in Jordan

<p>The aim of this study is to understand the practical situation of work ethics in hospitality industry organizations in Jordan by focusing on professional ethics in relation to employees and managers. It also focuses on how such professional ethics prevail in hospitality industry facilities and affect customers’ commitment‏. The study used primary data by distributing a questionnaire to staff in three-star hotels. The results revealed a positive relationship between the dependent and independent variables from the staffs' point of view by using simple regression. It is also concluded that professional ethical principles can be applied in hospitality facilities, primarily in dealing with customers and maintaining ethical trust; and that the staff (employees and managers) understands and appreciates the importance of having professional ethics in their organizations, as they lead to customer satisfaction and increases the level of commitment.</p>

Employees’ perspectives of service quality in hotels

Although the importance of service quality has been recognised, few studies have addressed service quality in hotels from the perspective of employees. Therefore, this study aims to measure the service quality of four and five-star hotels in Jordan from the employees’ perspective based on the SERVQUAL model. The current study was carried out by measuring the data gathered according to a five-point Likert scale. A quantitative survey method was applied, and therefore the SERVQUAL instrument was used to measure service quality. Data obtained from a sample of 238 respondents drawn from ten four- and five-star hotels in Jordan were analysed with the SPSS software based on descriptive statistics. The study’s findings indicated that service quality of five-star hotels in Jordan was higher than that of four-star hotels.

The effect of sustainability practices on financial leakage in the hotel industry in Jordan

Abstract This study aims to assess the effect of sustainability practices on financial leakages in the hotel industry in Jordan. A self-administered survey was distributed to hotel managers in all 213 classified hotels in Amman, Aqaba, Petra, and the Dead Sea area. Of these, 163 questionnaires were returned with a response rate of 76.5%. Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were used to test research hypotheses. Despite that many studies have predicted sustainability practices to have a negative effect on financial leakages, the results of this study indicated that sustainability practices didn't reduce the financial leakage level in Jordanian hotels. However, financial leakages are predicted to be reduced through sustainability practices over time. These results could help hotels to develop financial and conservation strategies benefiting their local economies, resources, and cultures. Future research may extend this work to other tourism businesses.

The Role of Knowledge Management Infrastructure in Enhancing Job Satisfaction at Aqaba Five Star Hotels in Jordan

The aim of this research is to explore the role of Knowledge Management (KM) infrastructure (organizational culture, organizational structure and information technology) in enhancing job satisfaction at Aqaba five star hotels located in Jordan. A total of 216 questionnaires containing 33 items were used to collect information from the respondents. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the research hypotheses. Results of the current study revealed that there is a significant positive impact of KM infrastructure on job satisfaction and these results are in line with the results of the previous studies mentioned in the literature, and also revealed that the dimensions of KM infrastructure that has the highest effect on job satisfaction are organizational culture followed by information technology; whereas the variable of organizational structure has not significant impact on it. Results of T-test showed that there is no significant difference in the impact of KM infrastructure towards job satisfaction in favor of gender. In addition, results of ANOVA test found that there are significant differences in the impact of KM infrastructure on job satisfaction that can be attributed to age, educational level, and personal income.

Employees’ Service Innovation Behavior and New Service Development in Four- and Five-Star Hotels

This study aims to explore the impact of Employee Service Innovation Behavior (ESIB) on New Service Development (NSD) among hotels’ employees. A research model was proposed in which one hypothesis was developed. The empirical data were collected from employees who are working in four- and five-star hotels in Jordan. A total of 332 questionnaires were returned and the data were analyzed using a single regression to determine the relationship between ESIB and NSD. The results supported the proposed model that there is a significant relationship between ESIB and NSD, and it also found that service innovation performance is exited in the hotel industry. The theoretical and managerial implications were drawn based on the study findings, and recommendations for future researchers were made, and limitations and conclusions are discussed.

Impact of Tourist Service Quality in Four and Five Stars Hotels in Jordan on Tourist Behavior

<p>The study aimed to investigate the impact of service quality on tourist behavior in five and for stars hotels in Jordan. A self administrated questionnaire was designed and distributed over a sample of hotels guest in Amman, the capital amounting 90 guests. The collected data was analyzed the study findings indicated that service quality impact tourists behavior and all service quality dimensions (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangible) also have an impact on tourist behavior. The study suggested some recommendations.</p>

The Assessment of the Training Process in Jordanian Hotels (A Field Study on Five-Star Hotels)

The study was aimed to identify the reality of the training process in Jordanian hotels classified as five-star category. Descriptive analytical method has been used and researchers have examined a random sample of employees in Jordanian hotels. The test contains lots of candidates come from 23 Jordanian hotels classified as five-star category. 281 questionnaires were distributed to employees. The study has pointed out that the Jordanian hotels are planning the training process well, and the hotels assess the training process in a suitable way to the employees’ requirements, in addition, the hotels use effective training methods and carry on the assessment of the training process. The majority of the employees in Jordanian hotels are males.

Stakeholders approach in influencing corporate social responsibility: a case study at two hotels in Jordan

This study aims to investigate the influence of the stakeholder's approach on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) adopted by hotels. This study uses Edward Freeman's stakeholder theory (1984). The stakeholder theory explains organisational management and business ethics that deals with values and morals in management and organisation. The research questions involve both aspects of internal and external CSR. The main concerns are primary and secondary stakeholders, which are based on Carroll's three-domain approach, as well as factors that influence CSR practices in hotels within each stakeholders group. Two five-star hotels in Jordan were chosen for the case studies and the data were analysed through both within-case and cross-case analysis. The main aim of the case analysis is to thoroughly describe and understand the practices through supervision and investigation. On the other hand, the cross-case helps the researcher make comparison between cases and determine how the policy and overall policies can be modified. This study illustrates the influence of integrating the stakeholder theory into CSR practices by employing a specific group of stakeholders. The findings suggest that the hotels are encouraging new methods to implement both internal and external aspects of CSR. Nonetheless, the stakeholders want the hotels' business model to be economical and ethical. There are many factors that influence CSR practices within each stakeholders group in the hotels with regards to the availability of services offered. Finally, this study reveals that the stakeholders' relationship with the CSR approach supports the stakeholder theory.

Effects of human resource management on hotel performance using structural equation modeling

The hotel industry is the largest and most rapidly growing industry in Jordan. Hotel management regularly seeks directions that enable them to sustain their competitive position. This study, therefore, investigates the impact of human resource management (HRM) practices, service quality, employee satisfaction, employee loyalty, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty on hotel performance in Jordan and then examines the relationships between these factors. A conceptual model is developed by proposing eleven hypotheses. Data are collected via a distributed survey to three-, four- and five-star Jordanian hotels. A total of 52 hotels in Amman responded to the questionnaires pooling 52 HR managers, 52 sales managers, 236 employees and 311 customers. The model is examined using structural equation modeling. The main results indicate that HRM practices, service quality, employee satisfaction, employee loyalty, customer satisfaction and customer loyalty have a positive influence on the improvement of hotel performance in financial and innovation domains. In conclusion, the methodology applied to measure the performance of hotel industry provides valuable information to top management and decision makers in Jordan regarding main factors that improve hotel performance and sharpen its competitive strength.

Classifying Jordanian Hotels Based on Their TQM Implementations

This study aims at classifing hotels in Jordan into groups based on their Total Quality Management (TQM) implementation. Using a survey methodology, the TQM questionnaire was designed to measure the level of TQM implementation throughout Critical Success Factors (CSFs) which are necessary for TQM implementation. A total of 345 TQM questionnaires were distributed to managers, working in 17 four- and five-star Jordanian hotels. The researcher obtained 227 usable TQM questionnaires. The results classified Jordanian hotels based on the CSFs for TQM implementation. More specifically, using cluster analysis on the CSFs of TQM resulted in two groups of hotels: ‘low TQM adopters’ and ‘high TQM adopters’. These two groups showed significant differences across the TQM CSFs.

An Empirical Study of the Moderator Effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation on the Relationship between Environmental Turbulence and Innovation Performance in Five-star Hotels in Jordan

Purpose: This paper aims to examine the Moderator Effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation on the relationship between Environmental Turbulence and Innovation Performance in five-star hotels in JordanDesign / methodology: The study involves a questionnaire-based survey of managers and heads of sections from five star hotels in Amman capital at Jordan. A total of (135) surveys from (13) five star hotels were valid for analysis towards achieving the objectives of this study. Multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling was performed to understand the relationship and effects among study variables.Findings: The results show that Environmental Turbulence (Environmental Dynamism, Environmental Complexity and Environmental Predictability) has a significant positive effect on Innovation Performance at five star hotels in Amman capital of Jordan. Entrepreneurial Orientation, also, plays a positive indirect role in the relationship between Environmental Turbulence and Innovation Performance at five star hotels in Amman capital of Jordan.Research limitation: This study only covered an incommodious part in the field of strategic management and organization theory. Particularly, it displays the important role of Entrepreneurial Orientation in the relationship between Environmental Turbulence and Innovation Performance.Research implications: The study helps managers and decision makers to understand the role of Entrepreneurial Orientation to increase Innovation Performance and the effect of Environmental Dynamism, Complexity and Predictability.Originality / value: The study explores the researcher’s perspective orientations about environmental turbulence and Entrepreneurial Orientation and their role in increasing and maintenance of innovation performance.

Disaster Preparedness of Hotel Industry Abroad: A Comparative Analysis

This paper aims to identify major emergencies that have the potential to place hotels in emergency and disaster situations; investigate how hotels were prepared for emergencies, how they manage and overcome emergencies when occurred; and limitations and factors influencing successful emergency planning and adoption emergency management in Malaysian and Jordanian hotels. Face-to-face interview for managers from three, four and five star hotels from different backgrounds: local; regional; and International in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Amman and Petra were undertaken. Results revealed that hotels are exposed to a wide range of natural and man-made disasters, Occurred globally affected locally. Hotels lack proactive emergency planning and a lot of constraints which impede successful emergency planning for disasters in the hotel industry, with emphasizing on the relevant authority’s role to demonstrate emergency management to hotels convincing them to adopt such practices, so they can be able to cope with emergencies effectively.

The Mediation of Tourists Satisfaction on the Relationship between Tourism Service Quality and Tourists Loyalty: Five Stars Hotel in Jordanian Environment

This paper aims to examine the relationship between tourism service quality, tourism loyalty and tourism satisfaction expectations in hotel industry. In this paper, the service quality standard model has been used for evaluation of service quality, Parasuraman, Zeithaml, & Berry (1985, 1988). Fornell et al. (1996) and Oh (2000) models with revision was used for evaluating the loyalty, and the instrument presented by Cauana, Money, and Berthon (2000) was used for evaluation of customer satisfaction. The focus of this research is five stars hotels in Jordan, and 322 customers of these hotels were sampled. The results of this paper demonstrate that in all aspects, customers’ expectation, are higher than their perceptions of the hotels services. In addition, this research findings show that customer satisfaction plays the role of a mediator in the effects of service quality on service loyalty. Moreover, the findings of this study provide tourism professionals in Jordan with more insight about the idea of TSQ and help them improve the quality of their services.

Crisis and disaster management in Jordanian hotels: practices and cultural considerations

PurposeThis research aims to: identify major risks that have the potential to place Jordanian hotels in crisis or disaster situations; investigate the tools/frameworks adopted by Jordanian hotels to manage crises and disasters; and investigate the cultural factors influencing the wider adoption of crisis and disaster management best practices in Jordanian hotels.Design/methodology/approachA survey of “five‐star” hotels in Jordan was undertaken. Interviewer‐administered questionnaire was conducted followed by semi‐structured interviews with three General Managers from three hotels of different cultural backgrounds: local; regional; and international.FindingsResults revealed that Jordanian hotels are exposed to a wide range of risks. Jordanian hotels lack effective and comprehensive tools/frameworks for managing crises and disasters. Organizational culture affects the wider adoption of crisis and disaster management best practices within Jordanian hotels.Practical implicationsTo be successful in promoting crisis and disaster management in hotels and in the tourism industry more generally, the relevant authorities in Jordan, such as the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Jordanian Hotels Association, should demonstrate to hotels in Jordan how significant crisis and disaster management is, so that they can be able to cope with crises and disasters more efficiently.Originality/valueThis is the first study investigating crisis and disaster management in Jordanian hotels using quantitative and qualitative approaches. This research will be of value to those interested in crisis and disaster management in the tourism industry.
