The article examines the theoretical characteristics of charity as a means of social work. Based on an analysis of the development of the issue in both domestic and foreign literature, it is demonstrated that societal attitudes towards charity have become a crucial factor in national unity when addressing crises in political, economic, military, social, medical, and transportation sectors. The approaches of researchers to the definitions of «charity» and «philanthropy» are analyzed.The foreign experience of charitable work in society is reviewed. Approaches to creating charitable structures as additional resources for social work are identified. It is clarified that modern charity is not only about voluntary, altruistic donations from individuals and organizations in the form of material, financial, or organizational assistance, nor is it merely an object of scientific research. It is also an effective tool for achieving compromise between business and society, social groups, and others.It is proven that charitable organizations, along with the state, undertake the functions of implementing social policy. The features of the development of charity throughout history, which shape new social norms and organizational structures, are studied. Additionally, the functioning of charity in contemporary conditions, the adaptation of social institutions and individuals to its demands, and the political, economic, and socio-psychological mechanisms of charitable activities are analyzed.It is found that the programs of charitable organizations are implemented through three main approaches: providing material support to members of the organization or beneficiaries; organizing mutual assistance and joint leisure activities; and creating institutions and services for support, such as educational, medical, rehabilitation, and social-pedagogical.
