The distinguished economic historian, L. C. A. ? Knowles, once described the Industrial Revolution in the West as the outcome two great movements. It was the product, she said, of French ideas personal freedom, combined with English technique. One aspect, in other words, was the introduction science and power in production. This created the factory system, and the new technology steam and steel, and joint-stock finance. But associated with the revolution in technique was a revolution in ideas. The latter broke up the old rigid social system and brought a new personal freedom and mobility. Together they released a burst creative energies which transformed the life great masses people and remade the world order.
