Walidacja odczytów rejestratora wypadkowego wykonanych za pomocą systemu Axes ADW

A comparison between readouts of crash data records taken with Axes ADW and Bosch CDR systems is presented. For a small group of readouts a reference was made by reading out the module memory in laboratory conditions, or using the Jaguar-Land Rover Tools. The comparison indicates favourable prospects as to the reliability of Axes ADW tool. The system offers interesting possibilities for vehicles otherwise not supported by any other tools and sporadic errors do not disqualify it from the use for crash reconstruction. However, the observed anomalies emphasize the need for the analysts of these data to have a sound knowledge background as the unconditional trust in the recovered information may lead to misinterpretations. Whenever possible, it is advised to employ various readout systems together with cross checking the recovered data.

Innovative joining technologies for lightweight material vehicles

The transport industry is one of the most important for society and its economic growth. In Europe, this is especially true for road transport, which is an essential pillar for employment, trade, and economic development. The challenge is to minimize energy and cost and maximize efficiency while ensuring comfort and safety. This is the driving force behind technological progress that with social changes (such as, changing consumer preferences, greater environmental awareness) and political changes is revolutionizing the way people and goods move. Nevertheless, the selection of lightweight materials is negligible; it could involve new manufacturing technologies and joining techniques. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been one of the prominent car producers employing aluminum alloys since 2003. A typical JLR monocoque is characterized by 90% aluminum stampings components made of 5xxx and 6xxx series aluminum alloys. Audi Space Frame (ASF) represents an alternative interpretation of improved lightweight frame architecture, and it is characterized by aluminum for more than 80% with the residual parts in CFRP used for rear panels, tunnel and the components useful to higher torsional stiffness. A 30% weight decrease is reached with respect to traditional steel corresponding elements. This review shows an overview of the challenges and opportunities for automotive body structures in the coming years while maintaining the goal of reducing mass and improving sustainability without increasing costs and impacting safety. This manuscript first evaluates how we can reduce mass in vehicles minimizing the carbon footprint and developing recyclable structures. The potential of new materials will be shown in light of the design constraints and the choice of technology used. The final remarks will discuss opportunities for engineering innovation dictated by this period of great changes and needs.

Poboljšanje Lean angažmana kroz korišćenje poboljšane komunikacije, prepoznavanja i digitalizacije tokom pandemije Kovid-19 u postrojenju za mašinsku obradu pogonskih sklopova JLR

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, many companies around the world continued to implement and drive adherence to Lean principles. However, there are a number of key challenges each company would face when implementing Lean, one of those main challenges being workforce engagement. One way of measuring the engagement of Lean principles is by assessing adherence. In manufacturing organisations around the world, there are differing motivations, and these can be dependent on a number of aspects, such as culture and organisational structure. Therefore, it is imperative to understand employees' motivations in relation to the adherence to Lean principles. This 3-year study of Lean principles assesses the adherence in Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) Powertrain Machining Facility. It also examines methods of instigating a new recognition process, developing an improved communication method, and creating digital solutions to training issues. The main achievement of the research is improving the adherence to the Lean principles, improving adherence to standardised working practices, and improving the utilisation of problem-solving and continuous improvement tools.

Carbon footprint analysis of Jaguar Land Rover Slovakia s.r.o.

The automotive industry around the world, including Slovakia, is taking steps to decarbonize their production in accordance with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Decarbonizing the operations of automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)requires a holistic and systemic understanding of all environmentally relevant resource flows and the implementation of technologically and economically affordable solutions to achieve their targets for reducing the carbon footprint (CF). The CF analysis of Jaguar Land Rover Slovakia s.r.o. (JLR SK) was performed using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). The purpose of the study was to improve theunderstanding of CF within the context of an OEM. The authors of this study are not aware, as of the date of publication, of any other comparable outputs from CF analyses by GHG Protocol in Slovakia, making this study the first of its kind. The results showed that the total CF was 1,143,205 tCO2e(tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent); of which SCOPE 1 emissions were 18,584 tCO2e (1.62%), SCOPE 2 emissions were 0.87 tCO2e (0.0001%) and SCOPE 3 emissions were 1,130,866 tCO2e (98.38%). Normalized CF values for all three SCOPES were 309.81 tCO2e per active employee; 3.08 kgCO2e per unit of turnover (EUR); and 14.95 tCO2e per vehicle produced. Current legislative standards and the active participation of OEMs can lead the automotive industry towards sustainability, including the achievement of net-zero carbon emissions despite rising consumption or production volume. With respect tosome ambiguities in the initial data inventory, the presented analysis shows the first approach to identifying the CF of an automotive factory based on GHG Protocol in Slovakia.

Feasibility Study of Wheel Torque Prediction with a Recurrent Neural Network Using Vehicle Data

In this paper, we present a feasibility study on predicting the torque signal of a passenger car with the help of a neural network. In addition, we analyze the possibility of using the proposed model structure for temperature prediction. This was carried out with a neural network, specifically a three-layer long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The data used were real road load data from a Jaguar Land Rover Evoque with a Twinster gearbox from GKN. The torque prediction generated good results with an accuracy of 55% and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 49 Nm, considering that the data were not generated under laboratory conditions. However, the performance of predicting the temperature signal was not satisfying with a coefficient of determination (R2) score of −1.396 and an RMSE score of 69.4 °C. The prediction of the torque signal with the three-layer LSTM network was successful but the transferability of the network to another signal (temperature) was not proven. The knowledge gained from this investigation can be of importance for the development of virtual sensor technology.

Interregional Analysis of Komárom-Esztergom County (Hungary) and Nitra County (Slovakia) Automotive Sector Via the Example of the Jaguar Land Rover

Abstract The Hungarian Komárom-Esztergom County (KEC) and the Slovak Nitra Region boarders with each other via natural boarder line in the Danube River. This neighbourhood means numerous inherit and mutually beneficial cross-border cooperation possibilities. In both counties, the automotive sector is one of the flagship of the regional economic development engine. In this context, it is crucial to gain a clear view about the main characteristics of the global automotive industry to get deeper understanding on KEC regional competitive advantages and the reasons beyond them. This paper is aiming to make interregional analysis and comparison between the Hungarian Komárom-Esztergom County and the Slovak Nitra Region automotive sector. In this context, Nitra Region and its automotive sector (Jaguar Land Rover-JLR) briefly summarized (main factors and the employment, education, innovation and the cross-border relations). At the same time, revealing the differences between the Hungarian-Slovak economical governance and regulation system, draw conclusions and adoptable recommendations for the domestic decision makers.

Does Reshoring Affect the Resilience and Sustainability of Supply Chain Networks? The Cases of Apple and Jaguar Land Rover

AbstractExtending the notion that reshoring can have a significant impact on a firm's supply network owing to the associated location decisions, we explore how reshoring influences the resilience and sustainability of a focal firm's supply network. While reshoring is triggered by aspects related to both the home (domestic) and the host (foreign) country, frequently more favourable aspects in the home country lead to the reshoring decision. To investigate these dynamics, we construct two large‐scale networks consisting of 2066 and 1283 firms, respectively, capturing the supply networks of Apple and Jaguar Land Rover. Both networks have been experiencing the reshoring of previously foreign suppliers to domestic locations. Our investigation captures the network dynamics created by this relocation of tier 1 suppliers for the overall supply chain network, that is, also for higher‐tier/sub‐tier suppliers. The results reveal, contrary to our expectations, that indirect (sub‐tier) foreign suppliers positively influence the network's resilience, with this impact, however, being negatively moderated by their degree centrality, that is, the number of ties a node possesses. In addition, existing indirect (sub‐tier) domestic suppliers do not have a significant influence on the resilience of the network. No evidence was found for the impact of reshoring on sustainability. Overall, our study contributes to the reshoring literature by delineating its influence on both the resilience and the sustainability of a focal firm's supply chain network.

Aesthetic Exploration of Organizational Theatrics: a Case of Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover Acquisition

This paper aims to critically analyze one of the most impactful events reported from the Indian corporate scenario in recent years, from the premise of its aesthetic underpinnings. Our focus is on the ambitious 2008 all cash cross-border acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover businesses by Tata Motors Limited from Ford Motor Company, US. This move not only added stature to the already reputed brand but was also instrumental in positioning India in the global automotive arena. Using the Natyasastra, an ancient Sanskrit scripture on Indian dramaturgy, as an aesthetic tool, we attempt to unravel the emotional performance depicted by various stakeholders partaking in the theatrics of the Jaguar Land Rover acquisition event. In the backdrop of theatrical performance, we examine the dialogical exchange between three distinct sets of actors, the firm, media, and equity market, to identify and elucidate the emotions they predominantly depict in the Jaguar Land Rover acquisition. This paper’s over-arching goal is to shift the preoccupation with metrics of organizational performance to focus instead on the emotional performance manifested through organizational activities, using an aesthetic and essentially Indian performative perspective.

Influence of Inter-Firm Network Relationships on Circular Economy Eco-Innovation Adoption

Research has shown that inter-firm networks and relationships play a key role in innovation adoption; however, these concepts have not specifically been applied to study their role in the adoption of circular economy eco-innovations. This paper considers whether the embedded relationships within inter-firm networks also influence circular economy eco-innovation adoption. Using a historical case study of the REALCAR closed-loop recycling initiative, by Jaguar Land Rover, from 2013 to 2017, the paper conducted qualitative interviews to reconstruct the structure and nature of the relationships between Jaguar Land Rover and its suppliers. This was complemented with a network regression analysis to determine the influence of these relationships on the adoption and implementation decisions of the closed-loop recycling process by the suppliers of Jaguar Land Rover. The results show that Jaguar Land Rover’s relationship as a key customer, facilitation of knowledge sharing among peer suppliers, and resistance from suppliers impacted by changing supply chain relationships played a role in the adoption decisions and adoption timeframe of the REALCAR closed-loop recycling innovation. This has implications for companies and supply chains to consider leveraging the inter-firm relationships embedded in their supply chain networks to accelerate the adoption of circular economy eco-innovations.

Multi-Plane PIV Measurements in a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The flows in-cylinder have a profound effect on the mixture preparation and subsequent combustion in all engines. These flows are highly three-dimensional in nature and information from multiple planes is required to characterise the flow dynamics. The flow measurements reported here are from three orthogonal planes in an optical access engine that is based on the Jaguar Land Rover AJ200 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been taken every 5°CA from the start of induction to the end of compression. Data have been obtained from 300 cycles for separate experiments measuring flows in the tumble plane, the swirl plane and the cross-tumble plane. Vector comparison metrics are used to quantitatively compare ensemble averaged PIV flow fields to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations across each plane in terms of both the velocity magnitude and direction. These quantitative metrics enable identification of regions of interest and differences in flow characteristics across a range of engine operating conditions. Combination of the PIV vector fields from all three planes into composite flow fields enables the interaction between the flows in the three planes to be visualised. During induction the intake jet is visible in all three planes, while the swirl plane measurements show a pair of counter-rotating vortices either side of the intake jet and the tumble plane shows the development of the tumble flow. During compression the center of the tumble vortex traverses the cylinder leading to flow reversal in the swirl and cross tumble measurement planes.</div></div>

Flood Risk Assessment for the Long-Term Strategic Planning Considering the Placement of Industrial Parks in Slovakia

The intention of the article is to demonstrate how data from historical maps might be applied in the process of flood risk assessment in peri-urban zones located in floodplains and be complementary datasets to the national flood maps. The research took place in two industrial parks near the rivers Žitava and Nitra in the town of Vráble (the oldest industrial park in Slovakia) and the city of Nitra (one of the largest industrial parks in Slovakia, which is still under construction concerning the Jaguar Land Rover facility). The historical maps from the latter half of the 18th and 19th centuries and from the 1950s of the 20th century, as well as the field data on floods gained with the GNSSS receiver in 2010 and the Q100 flood line of the national flood maps (2017), were superposed in geographic information systems. The flood map consists of water flow simulation by a mathematical hydrodynamic model which is valid only for the current watercourse. The comparison of historical datasets with current data indicated various transformations and shifts of the riverbanks over the last 250 years. The results proved that the industrial parks were built up on traditionally and extensively used meadows and pastures through which branched rivers flowed in the past. Recent industrial constructions intensified the use of both territories and led to the modifications of riverbeds and shortening of the watercourse length. Consequently, the river flow energy increased, and floods occurred during torrential events in 2010. If historical maps were respected in the creation of the flood maps, the planned construction of industrial parks in floodplains could be limited or forbidden in the spatial planning documentation. This study confirmed that the flood modelling using the Q100 flood lines does not provide sufficient arguments for investment development groups, and flood maps might be supplied with the data derived from historical maps. The proposed methodology represents a simple, low cost, and effective way of identifying possible flood-prone areas and preventing economic losses and other damages.

Aluminum Springback Reduction by Post-forming Electric Pulses

The use of aluminum alloy has been increasing in the automotive industry in the last years where a clear example is the new platforms of Jaguar Land Rover. On that regard, manufacturing problems such as galling, die wear and high springback have become critical for the stamping industry. Among them, the post-forming elastic recovery of the aluminum (with a third of elastic modulus compared to the steels) has become a big concern for the automotive stamping tool makers. Since the early 60s, the effect of electrical pulses on the dislocation movement has been studied as a mean of reducing stresses/forces necessary for the forming. In addition, this reduction leads to lower subsequent springback. However, the application of this technology during the forming is a big challenge that numerous researchers have been working to solve. In this work, the impact of the high speed short electrical pulses in the post-forming step (close die) is studied and the obtained springback reduction analyzed.
