NASAL PROVOCATION TEST AND ITS PROBLEMS

Virtualisation as a blackhat tool

Virtualisation has been touted as a security tool. If you virtualise a server operating system and only run one application in it, then any application that suffers from a security flaw in that operating system can't theoretically be used to infect other applications running in other operating systems. That sounds reasonable, but what happens if attackers use virtualisation as an attack tool? Researchers have already posited the idea of using hardware assisted virtualisation to insert malware underneath an operating system that doesn't realise it has been compromised. How likely is this to happen, and what can be done to detect or prevent it? Kevin Skapinetz of IBM Internet Security Systems explores the issue. Virtualisation is quickly becoming a favourite component of modern computing environments. With a proven ability to reduce costs and improve resource efficiency, it's no wonder that IT professionals have rapidly embraced this technology with open arms. Unfortunately, the same characteristics that allow virtualisation to solve many complex IT problems also makes it a potential tool for building potent new malware.

The Fractal Nature of Web Services

Conventional wisdom holds that the service-oriented architecture approach is the silver bullet for all IT problems nowadays. According to this view, SOA leads to near-perfect applications in which every function is implemented as a service, and a service can call any other service to implement its functionality. This includes not only services that provide business functionality, but also nonfunctional services for logging, monitoring, data transformation, and so on. Services that exist as independent concepts at design time are implemented as independent execution entities at runtime. Assuming that the conceptual system structure is equally useful during execution is a naive and potentially dangerous mistake. Instead, applying high-performance transaction system design criteria that optimize for runtime properties like performance, throughput, and resiliency should be paramount

IT enabled counter terrorism infrastructure: issues and challenges

In the post 11 September 2001, terrorism has been an immediate and most serious threat to the free world because of its real and potential damage to the infrastructure, economy and people. In response to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, developed and developing countries, such as USA and Pakistan, have emerged as front line states in the fight against terrorism with the following objectives: (1) prevent future terrorist attacks, (2) reduce the nations vulnerability and (3) minimise the damage and recovery from attacks that occur. In order to achieve these objectives, we require new approaches to intelligence and information gathering and its analysis through the use of information technology. In this paper, we attempt to identify (1) the areas where IT can contribute in accomplishing these three strategic security objectives, (2) the unique IT problems and challenges in counter terrorism applications where such applications are being used and developed such as in USA and (3) lessons learned for developing countries such as Pakistan, so that an IT counter terrorism infrastructure can be established with minimum cost in terms of time and money.

본 연구는 정보시스템의 효율적인 협력적 상호작용을 가능하게 하는 정보자원의 관리 방안을 마련하기 위한 연구프로젝트의 선행 작업으로 진행되었다. 우선 본 연구는 협력적인 문제해결과정에서 발생되는 도움제공자와 도움수여자 간에 유의한 행위적인지적 패턴이 존재하는지를 파악하고, 더 나아가 문제해결 상황에 대한 평가와 행위적인지적 패턴 간에 유의한 관계가 존재하는지를 살펴보았다. 상황을 인지이동이 발생한 특정 시공간의 집합으로 보는 Dervin의 의미형성이론에 근거하였으며, IT관련 문제해결을 위해 정보전문가의 도움을 받았던 36명의 이용자와 이용자에게 도움을 제공한 경험이 있는 22명의 정보전문가를 대상으로 심층적인 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 협력적 문제해결 행위 모형을 제시하였고 정보시스템의 상호작용성을 향상시키기 위해 시스템 설계시 고려할 점을 제안하였다.

Data integration: challenges for drug discovery

The effective integration of data and knowledge from many disparate sources will be crucial to future drug discovery. Data integration is a key element of conducting scientific investigations with modern platform technologies, managing increasingly complex discovery portfolios and processes, and fully realizing economies of scale in large enterprises. However, viewing data integration as simply an 'IT problem' underestimates the novel and serious scientific and management challenges it embodies - challenges that could require significant methodological and even cultural changes in our approach to data.

IT services in a completely digitized radiological department: value and benefit of an in-house departmental IT group

To analyze the benefit of a departmental IT group in comparison to support by hospital IT groups or system manufacturers in a completely digitized radiological department. The departmental IT group comprises a fulltime IT specialist, two student assistants and four clinical employees participating 1 day/week. For 18 months IT problems were quantified and specified according to urgency, responsibility and affected system by use of an intranet-based reporting system. For each IT service provider the performance and duration of problem solution was evaluated. In 18 months 3,234 IT problems emerged. 88.7% were solved by the departmental IT group. In 474 cases (14.7%) a solution within 2 h was required. The departmental IT group solved 35.8% within 30 min, system manufacturers needed 18 h 38 min in mean. The departmental IT group solved 90.2% of the problems within a time limit. System manufacturers met the limit in 60.1% with a mean duration of 7 days 21 h. In 6.7% of the cases, support by system manufacturers was indispensable. A considerable proportion of IT problems in completely digitized radiological departments can be solved by a departmental IT group, providing a fast and cost-efficient first-level IT support with effective prevention of major breaks in the workflow. In a small number of cases support by system manufacturers remains necessary.

In this paper, the FDTD parallel computation and high accuracy FDTD methods necessary for large-scale computation are described. These are applied to the large-scale problems of electromagnetic wave simulation, especially for ITS problems.

Paper has become such a commonplace feature of everyday life that it is often taken very much for granted and so it is worth pausing at the start of this article to remind ourselves of the diverse nature of paper and its many applications. The paper on which this article is printed is only a start, and it is not difficult for anyone to produce a long list of many different uses for different types of paper. In no particular order there comes to mind banknotes, cereal cartons, credit card slips, kitchen towels, “manila” file folders, wrapping paper, official envelopes, sugar bags, carbon paper, corrugated packing cases, newspapers, wallpaper, etc., etc. Some applications are not so obvious; if the reader is sitting at a desk or table having a heat resistant plastic laminate surface, the pattern will almost certainly be printed on paper, layers of which are impregnated with resin, and heated and compressed to produce the familiar laminate material.
