Multicultural Supervision: Lessons Learned About an Ongoing Struggle

This article examines the experiences of seven diverse therapists in a supervision course as they wrestled with the real-world application of multicultural supervision. Existing literature on multicultural supervision does not address the difficulties that arise in addressing multicultural issues in the context of the supervision relationship. The experiences of six supervisory candidates and one mentoring supervisor in addressing multicultural issues in supervision are explored. Guidelines for conversations regarding multicultural issues are provided.

Listening Visits to Mothers’ Suffering with Mild to Moderate Peri-Natal Depression; Critical Issues of Clinical Supervision, Training and Health Visiting Capacity to Tackle Health Inequalities

The importance of United Kingdom health visitors' in the detection and treatment of peri-natal depression in primary care services is well documented. Evidence based policy and clinical guidelines make recommendations for the prediction, detection and treatment of women with mild to moderate depression in the postnatal period continuing up to a year after delivery. An inter-professional cross organisational practice development project aimed to assess the provision of antenatal and peri-natal mental health care within one health visiting service in accordance with NICE guidelines (2007). This paper discusses the disparity between guidelines and health visiting practice; a lack of training in listening visits or other psycho therapeutic methods, poor access and availability of clinical supervision, commissioning reforms leading to larger health visiting caseloads suggesting the service is unable to meet NICE recommendations. Lastly, the evidence suggests the scope and practice of community nurses' within health visiting teams should be expanded.

KEDUDUKAN QANUN DALAM SISTEM PEMERINTAHAN DAERAH DAN MEKANISME PENGAWASANNYA

This research is focused on the issue of supervision of Qanun as a realization of Central Government authorithy over special autonomy in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam. This research uses analytic descriptive method which gives illustration on scope and opinion of the Central Government supervision over Qanun in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam. This research used juridical normative method as well through legislation approach. This research concludes that for the purpose of supervisory, Central Government may suspend or annul Qanun in the event of contradiction to the related legislation. Preventive supervision is performed on the Regional Government policy which regulates revenue budget and regional expenditure, regional tax, and other regulation that may cause high economical cost.

Islamic Finance and Conventional Financial Systems - Market Trends, Supervisory Perspectives and Implications for Central Banking Activity

The paper analyses Islamic finance from the central bank and supervisory authority’s perspective, focusing on the European and Italian context. It depicts a rapidly expanding sector, with recent annual growth rates of between 10 and 15 percent and a geographical presence that now reaches several Western countries. Future prospects, however, could be hampered by problems concerning the standardization of products, governance structure, supervisory regulation, monetary policy instruments, and liquidity management. Islamic intermediaries are not necessarily riskier than traditional counterparts but their operational structure tends to be more complex. Key issues in supervision include the treatment of investment accounts and transparency. It has been seen that there are limits to the efficiency of the monetary policy instruments developed so far to remedy the prohibition of interest; moreover, the growth of interbank and money markets is hindered by a shortage of Shari'ah-compliant products. Problems arising from the participation of Islamic banks in payment systems are also discussed.

Social Justice: A National Imperative for Counselor Education and Supervision

In this introduction to the special issue of the Counselor Education and Supervision journal, the guest editors provide a brief history of the social justice movement within the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and discuss the importance of addressing social justice issues in counselor education and supervision. The authors challenge all counselors to make social justice an integral part of their work.

Corporate Psychopaths, Bullying and Unfair Supervision in the Workplace

This article reports on empirical research that establishes strong, positive, and significant correlations between the ethical issues of bullying and unfair supervision in the workplace and the presence of Corporate Psychopaths. The main measure for bullying is identified as being the witnessing of the unfavorable treatment of others at work. Unfair supervision was measured by perceptions that an employee’s supervisor was unfair and showed little interest in the feelings of subordinates. This article discusses the theoretical links between psychopathy and bullying and notes that little empirical evidence confirms the connection in management research. The sample of 346 Australian senior white collar workers used in the research is described as is the measure of behavior for identifying psychopaths. The findings are then presented and discussed showing that when Corporate Psychopaths are present in a work environment, the level of bullying is significantly greater than when they are not present. Further, that when Corporate Psychopaths are present, supervisors are strongly perceived as being unfair to employees and disinterested in their feelings. This article concludes that around 26% of bullying is accounted for by 1% of the employee population, those who are Corporate Psychopaths.

The 5-Step Method: Principles and practice

This article includes a description of the 5-Step Method. First, the origins and theoretical basis of the method are briefly described. This is followed by a discussion of the general principles that guide the delivery of the method. Each step is then described in more detail, including the content and focus of each of the five steps that include: listening non-judgementally; providing relevant information; exploring ways of coping; discussing social support and establishing the need for further help. Finally, issues of training, supervision and on-going support are discussed. It is concluded that the 5-Step Method offers a flexible response that can be delivered to family members affected by addiction problems by a range of helpers and in a range of settings and health systems.

Supervising counsellors and psychotherapists who work with trauma: a Delphi study

ABSTRACT In this study the Delphi technique was used to identify the main supervision issues that require attention and consideration when supervising counsellors and psychotherapists working with trauma. A panel of supervisors, who were additionally experienced in working with trauma in adulthood, completed a series of three questionnaires comprising two qualitative and one quantitative round. Themes and key concepts were identified from the data, and the respondents rated the importance of the themes using a visual analogue scale. This iterative process identified areas where there was consensus amongst the respondents and areas where contention was apparent. The results revealed significant issues pertinent to the supervision of trauma therapists, with a particularly strong emphasis around training, experience and organisational issues. Directions for further research emerging from the study are also discussed.

Risk and the Female Offender: An Analysis of Classification and Supervision Issues

Risk is a defining feature of punishment in the United States. This is evidenced by the profusion of actuarial risk assessment instruments, now entering their 4th generation. Although the literature on risk assessment specific to female offenders is growing, certain questions remain unresolved. In particular, it is still largely unknown how gender might influence classification and supervision for offenders under community supervision. This study reports findings from a survey of community corrections officers. The perceived level of risk, the decision to override a classification score, and the perceived importance of risk and need factors are discussed.

Experiences of supervising postgraduate community psychology students at Wits university, South Africa

AbstractIn this article, the authors discuss problems and challenges of supervising postgraduate community psychology students at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. As part of their community work, students developed community projects in schools in Alexandra Township, aimed at dealing with social ills such as HIV/AIDS, gangs, violence, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. Students found community work to be extremely exhausting, stressful and demanding. Therefore, community psychology supervision became an important space in helping students to reflect on the experiences, anxieties and frustrations. This article discusses key themes that have emerged in community supervision, including gender, race and class issues. In conclusion, recommendations are provided on how to improve community psychology supervision based our experiences. Supervisors need to be proactive in helping students to reflect on their experiences and actively engage with some of the theoretical and practical issues that emerge in community work. Psychotherapy Supervision Since 1909: Some Friendly Observations About its First Century

Now a century old, psychotherapy supervision occupies a place of increasing prominence across all mental health disciplines and appears to generally be regarded as a (if not the) sine qua non for the teaching and learning of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy supervision has emerged as our “signature pedagogy.” In this paper, I take a look back at supervision’s last century and consider some (but by no means all) of the salient issues and themes that have defined its science and practice. The reviewed supervision issues and themes include the following: (1) the beginnings and evolution of supervision and supervision theory; (2) our evolving perspective about the supervision matrix; (3) methodological pluralism and diversity; (4) “good” and “bad” supervisor behaviors and the working alliance; (5) measurement; (6) effectiveness; (7) diversity; and (8) education. I use this “look back” to (1) give voice to where we have been and where we are now in psychotherapy supervision and (2) shine a light on some of what seems to lie ahead for supervision’s second century.

The Comparative Script System: A Tool for Developing Supervisors

The aim of this article is to offer to transactional analysts a simple theoretical and practical tool to support relational supervision. The authors propose the comparative script system as a useful aid to the training of supervisors, with particular reference to three areas: a framework for focusing on the key issues in supervision; a practical instrument for understanding and visually representing transference-countertransference dynamics; and a clarification of the boundary between supervision and therapy. While the focus is on its use in psychotherapy, the model can be used in all fields.

ABUSIVE SUPERVISION: PERCEPTION OR REALITY?

The article explores the issue of abusive supervision. Topics include the attributions and perceptions of abuse supervision by subordinates, the relationship between attributions and abusive supervision, lead-member relations as a mediator, and Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) relationships. It concluded that a large part of the variability in subordinates' perceptions of abuse is accounted for by their attribution styles. It also showed a positive relationship between LMX perceptions and perceptions of abuse.

A Review of Non-Traditional Occupational Therapy Practice Placement Education: A Focus on Role-Emerging and Project Placements

Practice placement education has been recognised as an integral and critical component of the training of occupational therapy students. Although there is an extensive body of literature on clinical education and traditional practice placement education models, there has been limited research on alternative placements.This paper reviews the literature on various practice placement education models and presents a contemporary view on how it is currently delivered. The literature is examined with a particular focus on the increasing range of practice placement education opportunities, such as project and role-emerging placements. The drivers for non-traditional practice placement education include shortages of traditional placement options, health reform and changing work practices, potential for role development and influence on practice choice. The benefits and challenges of non-traditional practice placement education are discussed, including supervision issues, student evaluation, professional and personal development and the opportunity to practise clinical skills.Further research is recommended to investigate occupational therapy graduates' perceptions of role-emerging and project placements in order to identify the benefits or otherwise of these placements and to contribute to the limited body of knowledge of emerging education opportunities.

Dating and disclosure: Adolescent management of information regarding romantic involvement

Voluntary disclosure regarding romantic involvement was examined in a sample of 222 middle and late adolescents (124 female adolescents, M = 16.19 years). Disclosure was described with three empirically derived, conceptually meaningful composites that pertained to identity/choice of romantic partner, everyday expression of romantic relationship, and parental supervision/sexual contact. Disclosure regarding identity/choice and expression was greater for females than for males and mothers were targets more than were fathers. Older adolescents disclosed less regarding supervision/sex than did younger adolescents. Trust was positively associated with disclosure, particularly for females when considering supervision issues. Assessment of adolescents' beliefs regarding act's potential for self-harm and consequences to others illuminated adolescents' reasoning regarding disclosure and nondisclosure. Potential harm was positively associated with disclosure regarding supervision/sex issues. The potential for an activity to affect other people was positively associated with disclosure regarding identity/choice and expression for middle adolescents but not for late adolescents.
