This study aimed at answering the research questions on the ways of this newspaper participation in the transmission of the information which is presented in all types of newspaper writing, reviewing the issues which concern the visitors. Some 110 editing stuffs were on the immigration and Sudanese who work abroad, representing the study sample in the context of the study duration.
 The study used the historical and descriptive methodologies, selecting a sample of the study society, because it is difficult to represent all the society in the study. It also used the content analysis for the sample of the study representing types of editing which transmitted in (Al-Intibahah) electronic newspaper during the first five months of 2013.
 The important results of the analysis are: most of the writing types are the reports, most of the samples concentrated on the social field, most of them are on negative attitudes on the Sudanese immigrants and their immigration for working abroad and most of the writing types had negative stance towards the immigration and immigrants' issues.

The Mariel Cubans and John Lewis's Legacy on Human Rights

AbstractThis essay examines Representative John Lewis's engagement with the 1987 uprising of Cuban immigrant detainees held in Atlanta's federal penitentiary, which occurred near the beginning of Lewis's time in Congress. Cuban prisoners at the penitentiary took control of the institution and detained several hostages in order to forestall their deportation back to Cuba. After the uprising ended, in contrast to other public figures who advocated harsh punitive treatment, Lewis urged mercy and compassion for the prisoners. Lewis's involvement in the story revealed his underlying understanding of human rights, which he connected to his experiences in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This broad conception of human rights shaped his engagement with issues of immigration throughout the remainder of his congressional career, especially during the administration of President Donald Trump. Lewis's engagement with issues of immigration is also especially noteworthy in light of metro Atlanta's emergence as a key site for the settlement of immigrants and refugees from around the world, which continues to shape the politics of the metro area.

Economic conditions and populist radical right voting: The role of issue salience

In this article, we show with the European Election Study from nine Western European countries that issue salience of the economy and immigration contributes to our understanding of the puzzling relation between economic conditions and populist radical right support. In countries with relatively weak or worsening economic conditions, the economy is considered more salient, whereas immigration loses salience – also compared to other issues. Voters who perceive the economy as most important problem are less likely to opt for the populist radical right than people who perceive immigration or even other issues as most important. Populist radical right parties appear to not only win votes on the immigration issue, they also lose votes on the economic issue. Finally, in contrast to actual economic conditions, negative perceptions of the economy increases populist radical right voting, despite stronger salience of the economy and partly due to stronger salience of immigration compared to other issues.

“Pragmatic, Complacent, Critical–Cynical, or Empathetic?” Youth Civic Engagement as Social Appraisal

Background/Context: Many studies have systematized the wide range of youth civic engagement mechanisms identified to date; however, how young people deal with a complex flux of sociocultural and personal variables which condition their scope of engagement has received less attention. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study: This article analyzes youths’ appraisal of social issues and how this assessment influences the ways in which they engage with those issues. It also examines the elements of their inner worlds and their cultural settings that they consider deciding whether to get involved in one way or another. Research Design: A narrative discourse analysis is completed on two hundred Mexican and Spanish adolescents’ explanations of an advertisement that sparked discussion on issues of undocumented immigration, discrimination, and past territorial disputes between the U.S.A. and Mexico. Youth civic engagement is categorized through ‘ways of engagement,’ a category that comprises the assessment of social issues performed by adolescents based on four constructs: civic knowledge, morals, discourse, and positioning. The analysis shows that four ‘ways of engagement’ are common to all the participants: pragmatic, complacent, critical-cynical, and empathetic. Findings/Results: The findings show how the participants assess the advertisement’s possible intentions, positioning, and moral implications; at the same time, they explain the potential solutions they see possible while taking their own stands toward the advertisement. This type of personal appraisal makes them decide in what way they engage with this issue. Conclusions: Finally, reflections on the possible implications of the four ‘ways of engagement’ for citizenship education are presented.

Immigration Policy Application in the Covid-19 Pandemic

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) was discovered in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, at the end of 2019. Expansion into Indonesia. To combat the spread of Covid-19 in Indonesia, the Indonesian government, through the Directorate General of Immigration, has implemented a number of measures aimed at preserving fundamental freedoms. Concerning the extent to which mobility tactics are compatible with Covid-19 from the standpoint of fundamental freedom. Subjective and deductive reasoning are employed in the analysis. Thus, it was determined that the Indonesian government used many measures to address immigration issues during the Pandemic Covid-19 period, including limitations on outsiders entering Indonesia's territory and administrative restrictions. The research was used to evaluate how immigration policies were implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic era.

‘You’re always fighting to be recognized’: a young blind man’s journey of upward mobility and intersectional activism

The author presents a case study of an in-depth interview conducted with David, a young blind man who has faced multiple and interacting forms of inequity. David’s experiences of blindness have carved out a path of upward economic mobility, as he gained cultural capital through a blind person’s organization in the United States. In addition, David’s experience of developing a political perspective on his disability was formative in shaping his process of coming out as queer and becoming active in Latinx issues and politics. David has gained critical skills in bringing intersectional perspectives to multiple activist communities to which he belongs. The author illuminates the importance of recognizing how culture matters in shaping the life trajectories of individuals with disabilities, which go beyond additive models of oppression. Points of interest Disabled people belong to multiple communities, but researchers have too often treated disability as a singular identity. Activist communities have also been slow to recognize that people’s backgrounds interact with disability. The participant’s journey to developing a positive disability identity had a profound impact on other aspects of his identity, including his social class position, his gay identity, and his advocacy around immigration issues. The participant’s experiences and advocacy within activist communities illuminates how various forms of inequity intersect.

The consequences of hosting asylum seekers for citizens’ policy preferences

Asylum migration is a major societal challenge in the Western world affecting residents’ policy preferences. We analyze the effects of newly hosting asylum seekers in a given municipality on local citizens’ preferences in terms of migratory and redistributive policies as well as of support or opposition to political change in general. Policy preferences are measured based on citizens’ actual voting behavior in national referendums in Switzerland between 1987 and 2017. We exploit the administrative placement of asylum seekers across municipalities and find that citizens vote temporarily slightly more restrictively on immigration issues in national referendums and are less supportive of redistribution than before hosting asylum seekers. Citizens are not more likely to vote for the status quo and not more likely to participate per se.

Do Polarization Narratives Apply to Politics on the Periphery? The Case of Atlantic Canada.

Researchers, policymakers, and the public often claim that “extreme” political views have become increasingly commonplace and that polarization on issues of race and immigration has become a central dilemma for contemporary politics. The popular narrative of political polarization captures tensions that many are noticing and experiencing. However, there is also significant confusion around the concept, as well as gaps between popular perceptions and empirical findings on the different forms of polarization and their prevalence across regions. It is unclear to what extent polarization describes a global phenomenon, as its national and subnational manifestations vary considerably, produced from distinct local histories as well as diffuse transnational forces. While the United States is often treated as ground zero for political polarization, nearby Canada does not appear to be experiencing polarization to nearly the same degree. Using data from a 2019 survey on Atlantic Canadians’ political views and perceptions of change, this paper examines whether underlying forms of political polarization are manifesting in the region. We assess whether mass ideological polarization and partisan sorting can be found in Atlantic Canada, looking at socio-cultural and economic dimensions of political values. We also examine perceptions of polarization in the region, using Multiple Correspondence Analysis to observe underlying associations between perceptions, extreme or polarized views, and partisanship. This mapping approach provides insight into latent patterns often missed by more traditional methods.

Counterterrorism and Immigration in Hungary

The European migration crisis beginning in 2014 served as a turning point in Hungarian politics where immigration issues effectively altered the nation’s security environment. The migratory routes as a pathway for illegal border crossings positioned Hungary on the frontline as a transit country for migrants seeking asylum in Western Europe. A critical analysis of Orbán's rhetoric and Hungary’s behavior in the realm of immigration and counterterrorism (CT) policy during and after the immigration crisis is relevant in understanding the state’s security environment. Anti-immigrant sentiments reflected in the population and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's rhetoric aims to tie refugee migration to terrorist acitvity. Migrants were targeted as a risk to the traditional European identity and survival of the state with a specific emphasis on Muslim migration from the Middle East and North Africa. This study seeks to understand Hungary’s regional and global security role and how CT activity is used by the government to legitimize government actions, particularly on immigration via securitization theory from the Copenhagen School. Hungary has heightened its role on the international stage through transnational CT cooperation and capitalized on anti-immigrant sentiments through speech acts to further exercise its influence in border control and the international fight against global terrorism. By examining a total of 36 speeches presented by Orbán from 2015 to 2020, the study is able to examine how immigration issues were securitized to develop pathways for extraordinary actions and authoritarian reforms performed by securitizing actors.

Polarization of climate politics results from partisan sorting: Evidence from Finnish Twittersphere

Prior research shows that public opinion on climate politics sorts along partisan lines. However, they leave open the question of whether climate politics and other politically salient issues exhibit tendencies for issue alignment, which the political polarization literature identifies as among the most deleterious aspects of polarization. Using a network approach and social media data from the Twitter platform, we study polarization of public opinion toward climate politics and ten other politically salient topics during the 2019 Finnish elections as the emergence of opposing groups in a public forum. We find that while climate politics is not particularly polarized compared to the other topics, it is subject to partisan sorting and issue alignment within the universalist-communitarian dimension of European politics that arose following the growth of right-wing populism. Notably, climate politics is consistently aligned with the immigration issue, and temporal trends indicate that this phenomenon will likely persist.

Mayoral leadership, immigrant sanctuary, and multilevel policy dynamics in San Francisco

ABSTRACT This article analyses immigrant sanctuary policies and practices in San Francisco between 1985 and 2018 to theorise about the role of mayors in developing, defending, and adjusting city efforts to shield undocumented immigrants from federal immigration authorities. Drawing on assorted qualitative data, it makes the case that the multilevel context of US immigration policy is an important determinant for how mayors have addressed immigration issues locally. In particular, it highlights two strategies that San Francisco mayors have used to influence sanctuary policies and practices while navigating ongoing intergovernmental scrutiny of the city’s lenient treatment of undocumented immigrants. When the risk of intergovernmental antagonism over city policies and practices was low, mayors adopted facilitative, democratic leadership strategies characterised by collaboration with local governmental and non-governmental actors to strengthen or institutionalise immigrant sanctuary. When the risk of intergovernmental antagonism was high, mayors retreated to executive, less democratic leadership strategies characterised by top-down decision-making and mayoral insulation from local political actors to curtail immigrant sanctuary and protect the city from state or federal attacks. This research illustrates how state and federal interference in city affairs can make it challenging for mayors to govern democratically by collaborating with other local actors.

The movies can be part of sudden and thorough revelations of attitudes toward current events. The ambiguities of our history can be seen in the swings of public sentimentality. In the movies, these swings are highlighted. Our deepest sentiments can be unexpectedly unstable. What we find in the movies can emphasize these discontinuities. West Side Story, Hamilton, In the Heights, and Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union display some interesting differences in movies about similar themes. The endurance of underlying unresolved issues of immigration and conflict are reflected in the history of popular culture. The deepest of all these issues is our unresolved problem of race.

Reflections on prevention of violent radicalization processes in the school context: An intercultural and critical approach

The article discusses the issue of the prevention of violent radicalization processes (Khosrokhavar, 2014) in schools, in the Italian context, focusing on their jihadist-type declination, and it intends to propose an interpretation based on the intercultural approach (Schiavinato &amp;amp;amp; Mantovani 2005; Mantovani, 2008; Schiavinato 2015) to the difference management in public contexts (Rhazzali, 2016). This perspective allows us to move the scientific debate away from the predominantly securitarian and emergency perspective, widely adopted by public policies, that removes from the political agenda the issue of an effective and fair management of cultural and religious plurality in the society and in the public space, by adopting an approach which is defined in the literature as "policed multiculturalism" (Ragazzi, 2015). Moreover, the securitarian discourse is a leading argument of some political parties and, encouraged by the mass media, is still dominant in common sense discourses. The intercultural perspective, on the other hand, proposes a more complex interpretation that includes not only the issue of immigration, but also allows to question the changes affecting society and everyone lives, in relation to the interconnections and exchanges that characterise the current era. It therefore considers personal and individual experience within a web of relationships co-constructed in everyday interactions, that are in turn situated in a wider social and cultural framework, which gives sense and influences them and, at the same time, is signified and influenced by them. The intercultural approach, in this respect, does not renounce taking a position of criticism and questioning of exclusion or inferiorisation dynamics, that operate both on interpersonal level and in everyday relationships, and on the broader level of the social processes that frame them.

Malaria in Illegal Immigrants in Southern Libya

Background and Aims: The risk of malaria re-introduction to Libya is increasing due to immigration to Libya from sub-Saharan countries where malaria is endemic. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of malaria-positive cases among illegal immigrants in the southern region of Libya. Materials and Methods: Three hundred and three illegal immigrants, with a mean age of 25.78 ± 5.92 years, from 12 different countries were included. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the presence of serum malaria antibodies. Results: One hundred and ninety-five (64.36%) of the participants tested positive for malaria antibodies. One hundred and seventy-two of the positive cases arrived in Libya within 1–10 months. The highest number of positive cases (70) came from Ghana, followed by (40) from Niger and (39) from Bangladesh. Conclusion: Illegal immigration issue should be treated urgently, combined by increasing the surveillance activities of infectious diseases to prevent malaria re-introduction to Libya.

Black-Korean Romance: Racially Triangulated Interracial Relationships and Immigrant Narratives in The Sun Is Also a Star

This article navigates Afro-Asian relations and immigration issues through its analysis of the romantic relationship between a Jamaican American immigrant and a second-generation Korean American in Nicola Yoon’s young adult novel The Sun Is Also a Star (2016). My textual analysis of Yoon’s work shows how this novel functions as a counterhegemonic literary project that problematizes systemic racism, anti-immigration policy, prejudice against interracial relationships, and stereotypical images of Asian men and Black women. Because representations of interracial relationships between Black women and Asian men in American culture are still scarce, Yoon’s literary work has social and political implications in need of scholarly attention. Unfortunately, the cinematic adaptation of this novel dismisses its discursive discourse, and the filmic narrative arc reproduces dominant ideologies of race and immigration. My analysis of the novel thus serves to recognize the literary activism of Nicola Yoon, on the one hand, and to critique the hegemonic discourses of the cinematic adaptation on the other.

REVIEW: Noted: Entire region ignored by UNESCO manual

Reporting on Migrants and Refugees: Handbook for Journalism Educators. Paris: UNESCO, 2019. 304 pages. ISBN 9789231004568&#x0D; WHILE this book will be of immense benefit to anybody teaching about the broader issues of immigration and trying to train journalists and journalism students to write on the topic with more understanding, it is a pity that it so effectively ignores the Pacific. This book has some excellent ideas and some really useful guidelines on how to report on migrants more sympathetically and with more understanding, but it is very heavily focussed on Africa and Europe—and Europe to a large extent means Germany.

Public Reactions to Immigration in the U.S.: The Effects of Intergroup Contact and Political Orientation

ABSTRACT This study investigated people’s reactions to Muslim and Latinx immigrants in the U.S. participants with positive intergroup contact and who were politically liberal showed less intergroup anxiety, less realistic and symbolic threat, and more willingness to help immigrants. The frequency of contact and immigration issue salience were associated with the willingness to help. When participants perceived the source of a pro-immigration message to be trustworthy, they reported less realistic threats and more willingness to help. Participants had differential response to Latinx and Muslim immigrants. While participants associated more realistic threats with Latinx immigrants, more symbolic threat was associated with Muslim immigrants.

Perceiving Immigrants as a Threat: A Motivational Approach to False Consensus

False consensus, or biased projection of one’s opinion onto others, has repeatedly been described by political communication scholars as a derivative of selective exposure to attitude-consistent information. This study proposes a distinctive approach to understanding the phenomenon by suggesting “perceived threat” as a motivational factor that contributes to self-serving estimates of public opinion. Based on a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults, we test a path model in which political ideology relates to false consensus regarding the issue of immigration through cognitive assessments of communication environment and perceived immigration threat. Results suggest that the relationship between cognition and false consensus may not be direct but instead works through motivational factors when one perceives threat, and that conservatives are more sensitive to outgroup threat and thus are more likely to overestimate public consensus for their attitudes on immigration than their ideological counterparts. Implications of these findings are discussed.
