STUDY ON BELIEFS ABOUT LANGUAGE LEARNING, ROLE OF GENDER AND STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN RELATION TO SECOND LANGUAGE ANXIETY

The study has given a myriad of insights and deeper understanding on the issue of second language anxiety, especially in Malaysia. This study encompassed several aspects in second language learning. The study focused on the relationship between second language anxiety and beliefs about language learning. Besides that, the role of gender in second language anxiety has also been one of the main focuses in the study. On top of that, this study also emphasised on the effect of second language anxiety on the second language achievement. To achieve the purpose, a study was conducted quantitatively among 334 respondents from a local public institution, which is a polytechnic in Negeri Sembilan. The respondents of the study were from Commerce Department which is the largest department in the institution. The respondents were the students from the third semester in the second year. This study used the modified version of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory (BALLI). From the study, it is found that the second language anxiety of the students is moderately related to their beliefs about language learning. Besides, the second language achievement is negatively correlated with the second language anxiety, thus explains the low performance while experiencing high level of anxiety. This study also reveals that there is no significant difference found between male and female students in second language anxiety. It is anticipated for researchers to continue and expand the field of study in order to continue contributing to the body of knowledge on second language anxiety.

Exploring the context of self-care for youth in military families

Unsupervised time among youth, known as ‘self-care,’ has been linked to higher levels of anxiety. The issue of anxiety in self-care is especially salient for youth in military families, because childcare is an important issue for service member retention and focus. We hypothesized that self-care is an appropriate developmental task within certain contexts. Bronfenbrenner’s Process-Person-Context-Time (PPCT) framework was employed to explore bioecological factors that buffer the anxiety of military youth in self-care (N = 1036; mean age = 13.39 years old). Survey results were analyzed to identify factors that moderate the relationship between levels of self-care and anxiety using hierarchical regression analyses. Findings supported the study hypothesis, such that there was an initial positive relationship between more self-care and greater anxiety (e.g., time spent alone correlated with anxiety), and the relationship between self-care and anxiety was moderated when accounting for personal characteristics and context. Specifically, gender (being female) and age (being older) were associated with higher levels of anxiety. Additionally, self-efficacy and geographic location (living inside vs outside the continental US) had a moderating effect on the relationship between self-care and anxiety.

Review on Optimal Siting of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Concerns about the need for clean energy and the need to reduce green-house gases have led researchers and engineers to explore adoption of electric vehicle technology. Electric vehicles hold a promising future due to their efficiency, low maintenance cost and zero carbon emission. Unfortunately, due to metric range drawbacks associated with electric vehicles, large scale adoption of electric vehicles still remains relatively low. To solve this issue of range anxiety, optimal placement and sizing methods of electric vehicle infrastructure is essential. This paper presents a review of optimal siting of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. It discusses impacts of electric vehicle charging loads on the distribution network and how large scale electric vehicle penetration would affect the grid. Further, the benefits of electric vehicles on the distribution network as well as the integration of renewable energy resources are presented.

The incidence of anxiety may not be correlated with severity of psoriasis: A prospective pilot study

Psoriasis is associated with certain psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. Although a growing body of literature has indicated high prevalence of anxiety in patients with psoriasis, it is unclear if the incidence of anxiety is correlated with severity of psoriasis. In this article, we hypothesize that anxiety is not correlated with severity of psoriasis, and therefore the issue of anxiety should not be neglected in patients with mild psoriasis. To testify this hypothesis, we performed a pilot study to investigate the correlation between anxiety questionnaires and severity of psoriasis. Thirty-two patients with psoriasis were recruited. The patients were further classified into mild or moderate to severe psoriasis according to their body surface area or Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI). Zung's self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and SF-36 were adopted to evaluate anxiety and quality of life, respectively. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated between SAS and each scale of SF-36 among these 32 patients. SAS is negatively correlated with role limitation due to emotional problems, vitality, emotional well-being of SF-36. Although SAS is not significantly different between mild and moderate to severe psoriasis, the detected levels of anxiety were higher than normative standards. Physicians should not neglect potential anxiety in patients who have mild psoriasis. Inter-discipline collaboration between psychiatry and dermatology is required to provide comprehensive patient care.

A Study on Relationship between Internet Usage and Anxiety among Primary School Students

The main objective of this study was to investigate the difference in internet usage and the anxiety level of Chinese primary school students in Johor Bahru, Malaysia across gender. The study was also carried out to identify the correlation between the internet usage and anxiety level among students. A total number of 396 primary school students from the Chinese primary schools in Johor Bahru, Malaysia have been involved in this study who are sampled by using stratified simple random sampling technique. From the study, it was found that excessive internet usage could occur in students of any gender depending on their patterns, purposes or motivations of using internet. However, male students tended to involve in excessive internet usage. There was no significance difference between the mean of total Internet Addiction Test (IAT) score of male and female students. There was a significance difference between the mean of total and Child Anxiety Symptom Checklist (CASC) score of male and female students. Female students tended to be troubled by the anxiety symptoms. Internet usage could predict the prevalence of anxiety problem although the correlation was weak. The findings of the study are to create awareness among parents, teachers, schools and community regarding the issue of excessive internet usage and anxiety in children, as well as to enrich the current empirical research data and theoretical evidence in Malaysia especially for primary school students.

IN-CLASS AND OUT-OF-CLASS ANXIETY IN SPEAKING TURKISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Turkish is spoken by a large number of people in a wide geographical area and teaching Turkish as a foreign language is a subject that gains importance nowadays. This research employed a quantitative survey strategy to address the issue of anxiety in learning Turkish language in and outside the classroom. Participants were 356 students of two high schools, one college and one university in Kazakhstan. Participants were given the Second Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (SLSAS), which was analyzed with: correlation to search for possible relations between anxiety, age, duration of studying Turkish, and Turkish course grades; MANOVA to assess the effect of gender and school type on students’ anxiety in speaking Turkish; and an exploratory factor analysis to identify factor structure of SLSAS. Additionally, an ANOVA was carried out on a second data set with 52 students to see any differences between students’ anxiety in speaking Turkish and English. The results of this research indicated that anxiety in speaking Turkish is weak and not related to students’ age, gender, years studying Turkish, and Turkish course grades. In addition, no significant differences were found between students’ anxiety in speaking Turkish and English. The only significant result was the relatively high anxiety of college students in the classroom. This research implies that anxiety in speaking Turkish does not differ so much from anxiety in speaking English.

The issue of anxiety in the modern world is important for the adaptation of people.In the system of modern scientific knowledge the phenomenon of anxiety in a human body and its impact on a person’s development and adjustment to the environment is one of the fundamental issues in biology, medicine, pedagogy and psychology. For example, it was found that anxiety in students has certain specific features.The aim of my work was to study the features of anxiety in university students.The following tasks were formulated to reach this aim:1. Analysis of psychological and pedagogical literature on the use of the method of art therapy as a means of correction of level of anxiety of adolescents.2. Experimentally examine the features of the level of anxiety of adolescents.3. Based on the results of the study, formulate conclusions and practical recommendations for parents and teachers.4. To study correction-developing program of correction of level of anxiety of adolescents.This theme is relevant because there are very few studies on the connection between the specific features of anxiety. In addition, theoretical and practical results of the existing works in this field contain much ambiguity and contradictions.This study involved 20 first grade psychology students in the age of 15 to 16 years.We were able to determine the level of anxiety in the group, compare the results and identify the differences. By statistical processing of the experimental data, we checked and proved the confirmation of our hypothesis.Art therapy, as a method of psychological and pedagogical correction, is the most effective means of psycho-correctional influence on the emotional sphere. Art therapy helps a person to resolve internal conflicts and strong emotions. Art therapy promotes awareness of feelings and feelings.In order to identify the effectiveness of the program, we conducted a pilot experiment.With the help of Spielberger's technique, we identified levels of anxiety in the group, compare the results and identify the differences. By statistical processing of the experimental data, we checked and proved the confirmation of our hypothesis.

Person-centred discharge education following coronary artery bypass graft: A critical review.

To examine the extent that individualised education helps reduce depression and anxiety and improves self-care for people who have undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Individualised discharge planning is increasingly important following cardiac surgery due to recurrent admissions as well as the issue of anxiety and depression, often due to lack of preparation. The hospital to home transition is fundamental in the recovery process. Individualised education and person-centred care ensure that patients' educational needs are met. This empowers patients, increasing self-efficacy or confidence, resulting in autonomy, a smoother discharge process and avoiding postdischarge problems and rehospitalisation. A critical review of published peer-reviewed literature was conducted. Electronic databases searched included MEDLINE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and PsychInfo 2009-2015. Eight articles were identified for review, and a Critical Appraisal Skills Programme framework was used to determine the quality of the papers, all of the papers focussed on coronary artery bypass graft. The designs were typically experimental or quasi-experimental with two reviews. A greater understanding of the patients' needs allows tailored education to be provided, which promotes self-care management. This level of patient empowerment increases confidence and ultimately minimise anxiety and depression. Despite the varying teaching and learning methods associated with individualised education, patient-centred education has the potential to assist cardiac nurses in adequately preparing patients for discharge following their coronary artery bypass graft. Development of individualised education programmes is crucial in preparing patients for discharge. The reduction in readmission to hospital has a significant effect on already stretched resources, and the reduction in postoperative complications during the recovery period linked with depression and anxiety will have a positive effect on the individuals' ability to self-care, health and well-being.

Mathematics teachers need to take on the role of counselors in addressing the math anxious in today's math classrooms. This paper looks at the impact math anxiety has on the future of young adults in our high-tech society. Teachers and professional school counselors are encouraged to work together to prevent and reduce math anxiety. It is important that all students feel confident in their ability to do mathematics in an age that relies so heavily on problem solving, technology, science, and mathematics. It really is a school's obligation to see that their students value and feel confident in their ability to do math, because ultimately a child's life: all decisions they will make and careers choices may be determined based on their disposition toward mathematics. This paper raises some interesting questions and provides some strategies (See Appendix A) for teachers and counselors for addressing the issue of math anxiety while discussing the importance of developing mathematically confident young people for a high-tech world of STEM.

Stress and anxiety among nursing students: A review of intervention strategies in literature between 2009 and 2015.

Undergraduate nursing students experience significant stress and anxiety, inhibiting learning and increasing attrition. Twenty-six intervention studies were identified and evaluated, updating a previous systematic review which categorized interventions targeting: (1) stressors, (2) coping, or (3) appraisal. The majority of interventions in this review aimed to reduce numbers or intensity of stressors through curriculum development (12) or to improve students' coping skills (8). Two studies reported interventions using only cognitive reappraisal while three interventions combined reappraisal with other approaches. Strength of evidence was limited by choice of study design, sample size, and lack of methodological rigor. Some statistically significant support was found for interventions focused on reducing stressors through curriculum development or improving students' coping skills. No statistically significant studies using reappraisal, either alone or in combination with other approaches, were identified, although qualitative findings suggested the potential benefits of this approach do merit further study. Progress was noted since 2008 in the increased number of studies and greater use of validated outcome measures but the review concluded further methodologically sound, adequately powered studies, especially randomized controlled trials, are needed to determine which interventions are effective to address the issue of excessive stress and anxiety among undergraduate nursing students.

Comparison between the effects of muscle relaxation and support groups on the anxiety of nursing students: A randomized controlled trial

ObjectiveTo compare the effects of the two methods of muscle relaxation and support group on the anxiety levels of the nursing students. MethodsIn this randomized controlled trial, 150 nursing students who met the inclusion criteria were divided into three equal groups—muscle relaxation, support group, and control—using the permuted-block randomization method. The experimental groups received 5 sessions of intervention, while the control group did not receive any intervention at all. Using Spielberger's inventory, the researchers measured the anxiety levels of all three groups before and after the intervention. ResultsThe results showed that both methods had a significant impact on anxiety levels of the nursing students; however, a comparison between their effects revealed that muscle relaxation had been more effective than support group. ConclusionsConsidering the seriousness of the issue of anxiety for nursing students, it is important that measures be taken to reduce anxiety in this group.

Comparison of behavioral response to caries removal methods: A randomised controlled cross over trial

The issue of dental fear and anxiety still poses a significant problem in treating children. Various caries management protocols have been tried to make the dental visit more compatible to the child patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the behavioral and physiological responses to chemo-mechanical caries removal (CMCR) and conventional drilling method (CDM). A total of 20 children with an age range of 7 to 11 years with bilateral frank carious lesions were included in this study. They were randomized into two groups: Group A--treated with CDM first followed by CMCR and Group B--treated with CMCR first followed by CDM. The physiological signs (pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation) were noted prior to treatment, during treatment, post treatment and 5 min after treatment. The behavioral responses were assessed by face, legs, activity, cry, and consolability scale and facial image scale. The participants were interviewed about pain, discomfort, taste, smell, preference and overall experience after every procedure. The pediatric dentist filled in details about patient behavior, time utilized and need for local anesthesia. The results were statistically analyzed using t-test and Chi-square test appropriately (SPSS version 11). There was no significant difference in any of the physiological parameters assessed between the two groups. Discomfort was significantly more (P < 0.025) in the CDM group than CMCR group. The time taken by the dentist was significantly lesser (P < 0.01) in the CDM group. Techniques which enhance the behavioral response in children should be considered for a better pediatric dental practice.

CHILDREN´S ANXIETY AND PARENTING STYLES IN FAMILY IN EIGHT-YEAR-OLDS

Anxiety is a recurrent topic in personality psychology of today. According to Z. Matějček’s (1991) estimation, the issue of anxiety assumes the third place as for the number of clients in children’s counselling service (behind the issue of intellectual capabilities and ADHD) in the Czech Republic. In children where it occurs to a higher degree, it can have a negative impact on their socialisation, achievements, development of self-confidence. The most influential factor in developing an anxious personality appears to be family environment. If the family fails to satisfy the child’s basic needs – feeling of security and confidence – the child’s development can be in jeopardy. The current research is concentrated on how the style of parenting in families (the so-called parenting styles) is related to anxiety in children at a younger school age. The aim of the research is to find out what relationship there is between the individual components of parenting in families (positive – negative component, component of requirements – freedom) and anxiety in eight-year-olds. These relationships were inquired into from mothers’ perspective by means of questionnaire surveys (Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale and Questionnaire for acquiring the parenting style in family). The data from 407 mothers of eight-year-old children have been analysed. An assumption that anxiety in children of younger school age is significantly influenced by parenting styles in family has been confirmed. The most anxious children appear to be children raised in families with a negative parental emotional involvement towards the child and at the same time with discordant control. They were also some differences in the importance of individual components of parenting by fathers and mothers for anxious orientation of the child identified. SUICIDE AMONG UNITED STATES MILITARY PERSONNEL: DETERMINING THE ROOT CAUSES

Suicide is a national issue, with rates now exceeding those of deaths from motor vehicle accidents. [1] Rarely have mental health issues been as widely appreciated by the general public and covered by the press than has been the increase in suicide among US military personnel, in particular those in the Army and the Marine corps, in the past 8 years. It is of grave concern when heroic young men and women take their own lives while serving their country. Determining the root cause(s) of these completed suicides, with the aim of preventing them, is a major focus of US military leaders and of the mental health research community. [2] Several papers in this issue of Depression and Anxiety describe results from studies that document risk factors for civilian suicide, or studies intended to reduce suicide rates in nonmilitary communities. Whereas these studies in nonmilitary populations can inform the topic of suicide in the military, [3] the unique nature of the military experience—including but not limited to the stresses of deployment—makes it mandatory that research be conducted in military settings with military personnel. In addition, the military structure, community, and career paths can offer unique opportunities for interventions from prevention to treatment. Several recent studies have begun to shed light on the problem of suicide in the US military. One of these, the Millennium Cohort Study, has recently investigated risk factors for suicide among US Armed Forces personnel serving between 2001 and 2008. [4] Similarly to findings from other military and civilian studies, this study determined that several mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and alcohol use problems were associated with suicide. Assessment of Factors Affecting Ephemeral Gully Development in Badland Topography: A Case Study at Garbheta Badland (Pashchim Medinipur,

Gully erosion in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, Indiahas been an issue of anxiety, formed by the amputation of soil from narrow channels through the accretion of surface runoff. Here, we attempted to investigate the erosion variability of gully in a micro catchment area, and also scrutinized the gully cross-sectional areas as distinct components of gully volumes. Twelve gullies were randomly selected in different slopes. To determine the geometric growth of the gully dimensions and soil loss, the initial length of gully, the width of the gully and depth of respective gullies was monitored in different seasons. Univariate analysis was conducted to measure the association between gully head retreat and vegetation coverage, slope, rainfall volume and runoff contributing area. We found strong and significant relation between the slope of gully head and linear retreat in the pre monsoon (p 0.008) and post monsoon (p 0.024) season respectively. Conversely, rainfall volume and gully head retreat showed a strong relationship in the pre monsoon (r = 0.80), monsoon (r = 0.66) and post-monsoon period (r = 0.94); while meager relationship was observed with rainfall intensity (r = 0.06). Results also illustrated that the overall retreat of gully head had very strong and positive relationship with the runoff contributing area (r = 0.89, p 0.001), and maximum gully erosion was observed in the monsoon period (55.67%). These results indicate that slope, rainfall and runoff contributing area have a strong positive influence on gully erosion in Paschim Medinipur district, since the initiation of the gully.

A Psychological Appraisal of Examination Anxiety among Some Selected Undergraduates in Ogun State, Nigeria

The study addresses the issue of examination anxiety among undergraduates from the psychological perspectives, focusing on the predictive roles of personality traits. A survey method was adopted and two hundred (200) participants with mean age of seventeen (17) were randomly selected from among undergraduates in Ogun State, South West, Nigeria. Data were collected using Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI) and Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI). The data were analyzed by Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) and the results show that participants’ personality traits contributed significantly to variance in the participants’ manifestation of examination anxiety. Thus, it was concluded that individual’s personality traits plays significant role in explaining and managing examination anxiety. The implications of the study in terms of behavioural and cognitive protocol in modifying the students’ examination anxiety were discussed.

Singers are sometimes plagued by an ongoing sense of anxiety that has the potential to negatively affect their work. This article addresses the issue of chronic anxiety as distinct from the more frequently considered topic of performance anxiety. Strategies are outlined to help teachers identify and address this problem in to order to help developing singers reach their full potential.

Anxiety and the Voice of Unreason: Reading Foucault with Freud

The paper focuses on Michel Foucault's early monograph, Maladie Mentale et Psychologie (1954/62); specifically the focus is on the issue of anxiety, which Foucault treats as central to pathological signification. Through a close reading of the text of Maladie Mentale and a comparison of the work to interpretive trends in French psychoanalytic theory in the 1950s and 1960s, the paper argues that anxiety as a discursive phenomenon overruns psychological discourse as well as Foucault's own theoretical engagement of such discourse. In conclusion, the paper finds that the voice of unreason Foucault detects in psychological discourse is the anxiety of theory confined within the limits of individual psychology.
