Multiple enrichment mechanisms of organic matter in the Fengcheng Formation of Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China

Based on core and thin section data, the source rock samples from the Fengcheng Formation in the Mahu Sag of the Junggar Basin were analyzed in terms of zircon SIMS U-Pb geochronology, organic carbon isotopic composition, major and trace element contents, as well as petrology. Two zircon U-Pb ages of (306.0±5.2) Ma and (303.5±3.7) Ma were obtained from the first member of the Fengcheng Formation. Combined with carbon isotopic stratigraphy, it is inferred that the depositional age of the Fengcheng Formation is about 297–306 Ma, spanning the Carboniferous–Permian boundary and corresponding to the interglacial period between C4 and P1 glacial events. Multiple increases in Hg/TOC ratios and altered volcanic ash were found in the shale rocks of the Fengcheng Formation, indicating that multiple phases of volcanic activity occurred during its deposition. An interval with a high B/Ga ratio was found in the middle of the second member of the Fengcheng Formation, associated with the occurrence of evaporite minerals and reedmergnerite, indicating that the high salinity of the water mass was related to hydrothermal activity. Comprehensive analysis suggests that the warm and humid climate during the deposition of Fengcheng Formation is conducive to the growth of organic matter such as algae and bacteria in the lake, and accelerates the continental weathering, driving the input of nutrients. Volcanic activities supply a large amount of nutrients and stimulate primary productivity. The warm climate and high salinity are conducive to water stratification, leading to water anoxia that benefits organic matter preservation. The above factors interact and jointly control the enrichment of organic matter in the Fengcheng Formation of Mahu Sag.

Experimental simulation of thermal evolution of nitrogen content and isotopes in source rocks: Implications for nitrogen cycling characterization and oil-source correlation

Sedimentary nitrogen isotopes have been widely used to reconstruct the nitrogen cycling and redox characteristics of ancient oceans, but they also have important value in the study of oil genesis, such as oil classification. However, the thermal evolution of nitrogen isotopes in the source rock and associated oil is currently unclear. In this study, the thermal evolution (from the oil generation to the dry gas stage) of three types of low-maturity source rock was simulated. And the content and isotope composition of total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) of the pyrolyzed source rock, expelled oil and retained oil were measured. In combination with weight-quantitative analyses, the following conclusions can be drawn: (1) During the main oil and gas generation stage, the pyrolyzed source rocks lost 15.1–28.3% of TN, which is much lower than the loss of TOC (26.2–46.1%). This difference may be related to the fact that the TOC content of the generated oil and gas is two orders of magnitude higher than the TN. In addition, TOC loss occurred mainly within the oil generation-expulsion stage, whereas TN loss occurred mainly in the dry gas stage and higher maturity stage. (2) The nitrogen isotope compositions of three types of source rocks and associated kerogens became heavier by 0.5–1.5‰ as thermal maturity increased, which is similar to the change of organic carbon isotope compositions. The δ15N values of pyrolyzed source rocks generally have poor relationships with either the amount of expelled oil and gas or the TN loss, which is different from the δ13Corg values. The δ15N fluctuations may be attributed to three processes: oil generation-expulsion, N2 gas generation-expulsion, and inorganic N (like NH4+) expulsion. The bulk nitrogen isotope composition of source rocks is only slightly affected by thermal maturity and can be used to indicate the nitrogen biogeochemical cycle and water redox conditions during the deposition. (3) Similar to δ13Corg values, δ15N values of both expelled oil and retained oil increased gradually with enhanced thermal maturity, implying a control of kinetic isotope effect. Among the three types of source rock, two of them having relatively light nitrogen isotope compositions (δ15N value of ∼2.5‰) generated and expelled oils with similar nitrogen isotope compositions, while the third type, which has heavy nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N value of ∼13.0‰), generated and expelled oils with much lighter nitrogen isotope compositions (by 3–6‰). This finding shows that there may be significant nitrogen isotope fractionation during the generation and primary migration of oil from source rocks. The nitrogen isotopes should be used in oil-source correlation with caution, even though related mechanisms need to be further studied. Nevertheless, using a combination of organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes, the oil generated and expelled by the three types of source rocks could be distinguished. Therefore, the use of nitrogen isotopes for oil-source correlation under geological conditions should be combined with other isotope and molecular indicators.

Nitrogen isotope gradient on continental margins during the late Paleoproterozoic

The late Paleoproterozoic was a key period in the evolution of Earth’s surface environments and life. It is generally accepted that during the 2.43–2.06 Ga Great Oxidation Episode, the atmospheric oxygen level rose to an intermediate state (0.1% to 10% of the present atmospheric level) and the chemical composition of the oceans changed significantly. The paleontological record indicates that eukaryotes appeared during the late Paleoproterozoic. Nitrogen, an essential nutrient for life, is thought to have been one of the key factors in eukaryote evolution. However, nitrogen bioavailability and spatial heterogeneity in nitrogen cycle in the late Paleoproterozoic oceans remain controversial. Here, we examine carbon and nitrogen cycling in the late Paleoproterozoic ocean, via analysis of redox-sensitive element contents and organic carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of black shales of the ca. 1.9 Ga Nuvilic Formation of the Povungnituk Group, Cape Smith Belt, Canada. Two diamond drill-holes (DDHs) 718–3333 (∼50 m-long) and 4G8069 (∼90 m-long) investigated in this study contain turbiditic greywackes and black shales deposited on the northern margin of the Archean Superior craton below the storm wave-base. Sedimentary rocks of DDH 4G8069 might have been deposited closer to the continental source area, as indicated by sandstone abundance, than those of DDH 718–3333. Redox-sensitive element (V, U, and Mo) contents in black shales of DDH 4G8069 are low and show positive correlation with Al contents, whereas those of DDH 718–3333 are irregularly elevated. Fe/Al ratios of DDH 718–3333 are low, which likely reflect Fe loss from sediments under anoxic water-column conditions. Depositional environment is inferred to be above and below the redoxcline for DDHs 4G8069 and 718–3333, respectively. Organic carbon isotope values of DDH 718–3333 are approximately 1.7‰ lighter than those of DDH 4G8069, which might reflect methane cycling at the redoxcline. Nitrogen isotope values are positive (> +3‰) for all the black shale samples, corresponding to aerobic nitrogen cycling and presence of bioavailable nitrate on the northern margin of the Superior craton during the late Paleoproterozoic. Furthermore, nitrogen isotope values for DDH 718–3333 are approximately 2‰ heavier than those for DDH 4G8069. The observed isotopic heterogeneity is similar to that in modern oxygen-minimum zones and could represent intense denitrification at the redoxcline. Although no ca. 1.9 Ga microfossils reported to date are considered unambiguously eukaryotic, the aerobic nitrogen cycling inferred for the Nuvilic Formation, as well as for the previously studied Rove, Virginia, and Menihek formations, suggests that nitrogen limitation was unlikely to have inhibited biological evolution during the late Paleoproterozoic, a finding that is consistent with molecular clock studies suggesting that the emergence of eukaryotes occurred during the Paleoproterozoic.

Nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate alleviates the dissolution of soil inorganic carbon caused by nitrogen fertilization

In carbonate soils, soil inorganic carbon (SIC) dissolves and releases CO2 due to exogenous application of nitrogen fertilizer, which makes the soil an important carbon source. Application of the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) is likely to be an effective measure to alleviate SIC dissolution. A 5-year field experiment was conducted to observe SIC dynamics under three treatments: No N fertilizer (CK), N fertilizer (NF), and N fertilizer combined with DMPP (N + NI). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 20, 20–40, 40–60, 60–80, and 80–100 cm in depth, and soil organic carbon (SOC), SIC, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of the soil were analyzed. The proportion of pedogenic carbonate (PIC) in SIC was estimated using an isotopic mass balance equation. Results showed that: (1) compared with the application of N only, DMPP had no significant effect on SOC content and δ13CSOC in the 0–100 cm soil profile; (2) the application of N fertilizer significantly reduced the SIC content by 10.0 g·kg−1 (58.3 %) in the 0–80 cm soil profile. In the 0–20, 20–40, and 60–80 cm soil layers, the SIC content was reduced by 2.9, 1.9, and 3.8 g·kg−1, respectively. However, the SIC content significantly increased by 3.2 g·kg−1 (58.9 %) in the 80–100 cm soil layer. DMPP application significantly increased the SIC content in the 0–20 and 20–40 cm soil layers by 1.3 g·kg−1 (50.9 %) and 1.2 g·kg−1 (48.2 %), respectively; (3) DMPP combined with N significantly alleviated PIC dissolution in the 0–40 cm soil layers and increased PIC stock in 0–100 cm soil by 6.2 Mg·ha−1 (64.6 %). Applying DMPP to farmland soil containing carbonate significantly alleviated the dissolution of N fertilizer on PIC, which may decrease CO2 emissions in the field.

Geochemical Characteristics of the Middle Jurassic Coal-Bearing Mudstones in the Dameigou Area (Qaidam Basin, NW China): Implications for Paleoclimate, Paleoenvironment, and Organic Matter Accumulation.

The Qaidam Basin is a prominent oil and gas exploration and production base of NW China's Jurassic coal-bearing strata. Coal-bearing mudstones are important source rocks for unconventional reservoirs and can record valuable paleoenvironment and paleoclimate information. Here, geochemical analysis including total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur, organic carbon isotopic composition, rock pyrolysis, X-ray diffraction, and major and trace elements were carried out on mudstone samples from the Middle Jurassic coal-bearing strata of the Dameigou section in the Qaidam Basin to reveal the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions during the deposition of the strata and their controls on organic matter accumulation. Results show that the Middle Jurassic Dameigou and Shimengou formations include three significant stages based on their average TOC values of (3.32%, Stage I; 0.87%, Stage II; and 4.42%, Stage III) from the bottom to the top. The organic matter in mudstones in Stages I and II are mainly derived from terrestrial higher plants, while the organic matter has mixed sources of higher plant debris and lower aquatic organisms in Stage III. Paleoclimate parameters indicate that the mudstones in Stage I were deposited under humid and warm conditions, while the climate in Stage II changed to semiarid and warm conditions before turning dry and hot in Stage III. The varying paleoenvironmental characteristics under different paleoclimatic conditions have also been reconstructed. Our results suggest that the accumulation of organic matter in Stages I and II was primarily controlled by redox conditions, while paleoproductivity is the major controlling factor for organic matter accumulation in Stage III.

Enigmatic carbonate isotope values in shark teeth: Evidence for environmental and dietary controls

Shark teeth are abundant in the fossil record and integrate physiological information, ecological interactions, and paleo-oceanographic conditions in their chemistry. Fossil shark teeth are well suited for stable isotope analysis because their enameloid is resistant to diagenetic alteration due to its high chemical stability. Although often used in paleoecological studies of mammals, carbonate carbon isotope compositions (δ13CCO3) in shark enameloid have remained enigmatic. Here, we investigate multiple stable isotope systems (δ13Corg, δ13CCO3, δ18OCO3, δ18OPO4) within modern shark teeth to determine relationships between the different systems and build an interpretative framework for future studies of both modern and fossil sharks. There is a weaker than expected correlation between δ18OPO4 and δ18OCO3 values in modern shark teeth (r2 = 0.44), which contrasts with mammalian studies to date and suggests this metric is not an appropriate test for diagenetic alteration in fossil shark teeth. Organic carbon isotope composition (δ13Corg) measured from modern dental collagen ranges from −16.0‰ to −10.8‰. The enameloid δ13CCO3 values we measured are much higher than collagen, ranging from −6.0‰ to 10.3‰, and there is no direct relationship between δ13Corg and δ13CCO3 values in shark teeth. Instead, we found the fractionation (ε) between δ13Corg and δ13CCO3 values to correspond with δ18OCO3 values but not δ18OPO4 values. This could be due to the carbon source in shark enameloid being partitioned between dietary carbon and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) or physiological differences in the tooth formation process changing the fractionation of carbonate isotopes. We applied the fractionation factor from modern teeth to carbonate isotope compositions of fossil shark teeth to predict δ13Corg values. Although the carbon sources to shark enameloid carbonate needs further investigation, our results suggest that fossil shark teeth could provide insights into carbon cycling of ancient marine ecosystems.

Preservation of organic C and N isotope signatures from water column to sediments in the anoxic and ferruginous Pavin lake

Organic carbon (Corg) and bulk nitrogen (Nbulk) isotope compositions (respectively δ13Corg and δ15Nbulk) of sedimentary rocks deposited in the Archean and Proterozoic eons are commonly used as proxies for the biomass δ13Corg and δ15Nbulk values in paleo-environment and paleo-ecosystem studies. Many sedimentary rocks from these eons were deposited under ferruginous conditions, but it remains unknown whether C and N isotope signatures are preserved during diagenetic degradation of organic matter under this chemical state. Lake Pavin, Massif Central, France, is a permanently stratified freshwater lake with anoxic and ferruginous deep waters and represents a unique natural site for evaluating the impact of organic matter decomposition predominantly through iron redox cycling and methanogenesis. Here we present C and N isotope compositions of sediment collected from traps placed at different depths in the water column and from cores recovered in the anoxic zone of the lake. The δ13Corg and δ15Ntot values in the living biomass of Lake Pavin are estimated from the shallowest sediment traps. The biomass δ13Corg values show a seasonally-controlled bimodal distribution, around −23.3 ± 1.7 ‰ (2σ) in September and November (organic matter produced in summer and autumn) and −28.0 ± 2.6 ‰ (2σ) in April and June (organic matter produced in winter and spring). These seasonal variations are attributed to variable δ13C values in dissolved inorganic carbon, inherited from fluctuation in the relative rates of photosynthesis versus respiration. The δ15Ntot values are near −1 ‰ for most seasons, indicating that the dominant N source to photosynthetic biomass is atmospheric N2.Along the water column profile, organic matter mineralization released about 20% of C and 30% of N, with only moderate effects on δ13Corg and δ15Ntot (decreased by 1.3 and 0.4 ‰, respectively). Although the water column data show significant seasonal variations, global annual fluxes, estimated from regular trap collection over 15 months, are remarkably consistent with the top sediment composition. In the sedimentary column, microbial degradation through ferric iron reduction and methanogenesis induces a loss of 40–50% Corg and 50–60% Ntot, with negligible modification of δ13Corg and δ15Ntot. We conclude that although the C/N ratio increases significantly as organic matter is degraded in the water column and in the first ∼15 cm of the sedimentary column, δ13Corg and δ15Ntot are well preserved, supporting the idea that C and N isotope signatures can be reliably interpreted as tracers of primary biomass in sedimentary rocks deposited in anoxic and ferruginous environments.

The control of turbidite deposition on pyrite sulfur isotopic composition in sediments on the continental slope of the South China Sea

Sulfate reduction is a commonly reported process in a variety of continental margin settings that affects the carbon (C), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe) marine sedimentary cycles. However, sulfate reduction in unstable environment (turbidite deposition) is easily ignored, which results in a lack of understanding of the C, S, and Fe biogeochemical cycle. Therefore, to elucidate the role of turbidite sedimentation in the global C, S, and Fe biogeochemical cycle, total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), iron speciation, pyrite contents, and sulfur isotopic composition in sediments (CL94) on the South China Sea continental slope were analyzed, along with sediment grain sizes, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content, and K/Al and Ti/Al ratios. Based on petrographic characteristics, grain size parameters, and element geochemistry (K/Al and Ti/Al ratio), it was concluded that the mid-section (322–350 cm) of Site CL94 is a turbidite layer. Compared with normal sedimentary environment, δ34SCRS (−39.7 ‰ on average) exhibits a high value in turbidite layer, which could be related to the high deposition rate and relatively closed environment caused by the turbidity current deposition. Furthermore, in situ deposition is virtually entirely unaffected by external influences, and this is the primary source of sulfide and reactive iron in the relatively closed environment. Thus, pyrite concentration in the turbidity layer fluctuates in conjunction with variations in sulfide and active iron. Moreover, the identification and data extraction of methane seeps were further complicated by the fact that the TS/TOC ratio and δ34SCRS features induced by the turbidity current were extremely similar to those of sediments around methane seeps. The examination of pyrite sulfur isotopic composition and TS/TOC ratios for detecting methane seepage requires further investigation.

Temporal variability of particle flux and its components in the Gotland Basin, eastern Baltic Sea

Sinking particles were studied by analyzing samples collected in a sediment trap at 180 m depth in the Gotland Basin, eastern Baltic Sea between 1999 and 2020. The aim of this study was to determine the temporal variability of the particle flux and its components and how their changes are linked to phytoplankton blooms. The variables studied included total particle flux, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, biogenic silica, C:N ratio and the isotopic composition of organic carbon and nitrogen. The total particle flux and its components reached maximum values in 2003, 2012 and 2015. Long-term means over the 22-year period of the total particle flux and its components particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, biogenic silica were estimated at around 152, 22, 3 and 8 mg m−2 d−1, respectively. The C:N ratio and the isotopic composition of organic carbon and nitrogen showed high variability around their long-term means of 9, -25‰ and 4‰, respectively. The annual variability of the components of the flux particulate organic carbon (3–65 mg m−2 d−1), particulate organic nitrogen (0.4–9 mg m−2 d−1) and biogenic silica (1–24 mg m−2 d−1) exhibited the same general pattern as the total particle flux (11–450 mg m−2 d−1) over the study period. On the seasonal scale, sinking material in summer contributed roughly one-third (31%) to the total particle flux, followed by winter (27%), spring (24%) and autumn (19%). The highest particle flux occurred mostly in April, July and November, during and after the appearance of phytoplankton blooms in the Gotland Basin. The phytoplankton community changed from silicon-rich species to nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, indicating a shift in nitrogen sources from nitrate-based to N2-based over the year. The spring bloom, dominated by diatoms, was characterized by a lighter carbon and heavier nitrogen isotopic composition, while the summer bloom, mainly of diazotrophic cyanobacteria, was characterized in contrary by heavier carbon and lighter nitrogen isotopes. Although no trend was found in the data, the variability observed in the sinking material was related to the changes over time in the phytoplankton community in the Gotland Basin. The findings of this study provide new and valuable information for our understanding of the temporal variability of sinking material linked to the development of phytoplankton blooms and nutrient sources in the Gotland Basin, and underscore the importance of continued monitoring to understand the potential impacts of environmental changes on this fragile ecosystem.

Quantification of the sources of sedimentary organic carbon at methane seeps: A case study from the South China Sea

Large amounts of methane are stored along continental margins in the form of methane hydrate. Methane hydrate is sensitive to environmental change, resulting in the release of substantial quantities of methane upon its destabilization. In the marine subsurface, microorganisms consume most of the methane in the sulfate-methane transition zone and convert a certain amount of methane into organic matter. Burial of such organic matter deriving from methane oxidation represents a long-term carbon sink, therefore mitigating the effect of a prominent greenhouse gas on global warming. However, the controls on the formation and consumption of sedimentary organic matter at marine seeps remain poorly constrained, impeding accurate quantification of carbon burial at seeps and its role in the marine carbon cycle. To gain new insight on the effect of seeps on carbon burial, sediments from two seep sites of the South China Sea (Site F, Haiyang 4) and a nearby reference site (Jiulong canyon) were analyzed for total organic carbon contents (TOC), δ13CTOC and Δ14C values, total inorganic carbon contents (TIC) and δ13CTIC values, as well as organic nitrogen (N) contents. Depth distributions reveal that the TOC at seeps (Site F, 0.55% ± 0.08%, Haiyang 4, 0.67% ± 0.11%) is higher than in sediments not affected by seepage (Jiulong canyon, 0.50% ± 0.10%). The enrichment of total sulfur, high TIC, and negative δ13CTIC values in sediments from Site F and Haiyang 4 agrees with locally prominent sulfate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and resultant precipitation of authigenic carbonate. At the two seep sites, the sediments are characterized by more negative δ13CTOC and Δ14C values and a lower TOC/N ratio, indicating a contribution of the microbial fixation of 13C-depleted methane to the local pool of sedimentary organic matter. A linear increase in 14C ages of organic carbon with sediment depth at the reference site indicates steady depositional conditions, whereas the 14C age of organic carbon at seeps is typified by contributions of methanotrophy-derived carbon. A Δ14C mass balance approach shows that carbon derived from fossil methane accounts for at least 10 to 20% of the organic carbon preserved in the sediments. By comparing seeps, hydrate-bearing sediments, modern coastal sediments, and Archaean rocks, it becomes apparent that the carbon stable isotope composition of organic carbon in seep sediments is mainly controlled by the rate of methane oxidation and marine primary productivity.

The article considers an approach to the reconstruction of the bioproductivity of Palaeozoic pelagic ecosystems based on the numeric modelling of the carbon isotope fractionation. The model uses information on the carbon dioxide content in atmosphere, water temperature, and carbon isotopic composition of carbonates and conodont elements. The developed model is tested on the material from the Upper Devonian — Lower Carboniferous of the northern Cis-Urals (successions of carbonate platform and slope of intrashelf depression). It allows reconstructing of the primary productivity of the Palaeozoic pelagic ecosystems and their dynamics on the basis of limited data. The results of the modelling are considered as rather qualitative than quantitative. The carbon isotope composition of total organic carbon was used for controlling the quality of the model.

Trace elements and stable isotopic geochemistry of two sedimentary sections in the lower Cambrian strata from the Tarim Basin, northwest China: Implications for silicification and biological evolution

Early animal innovations were coupled with profound atmospheric oxidation and oceanic disturbances during the Cambrian explosion; however, the relationship between evolutionary breakthroughs and ocean oxygenation remains controversial. In addition to the sufficiently investigated South China Craton, detailed research on other regions is needed to expand our understanding of ocean oxygenation dynamics and their relationships with animal radiation. Paleoenvironment reconstruction in the Tarim Basin is expected to yield additional contributions to the relevant literature. In this study, rare earth elements, redox-sensitive proxies, organic and inorganic carbon isotopic compositions (δ13CCarb and δ13CKer) of samples from lower Cambrian in the Shiairike and Yaerdangshan Sections of the Tarim Basin were analyzed. Our results showed that the cherts of the studied strata were not directly deposited from hydrothermal fluids but formed in a rather anoxic diagenetic environment where pH drawdown by organic matter degradation facilitated the precipitation of dissolved silica. Yuertusi and Xishanbulake cherts may have derived predominantly from direct seawater precipitation, among which cherts with negative Eu anomalies may have formed near the sulfate–methane transition zone, whereas cherts without Eu anomalies may have formed near the sediment-water interface. The negative δ13CCarb excursion (from 2.47‰ to −11.11‰) detected in the Yuertusi chert unit showed covariations with the enrichment factor of trace elements and other geochemical redox proxies. Therefore, the isotope excursion might be constrained by the anoxic diagenetic pore water and cannot be appropriately utilized for stratigraphic correlation. Multiple geochemical analyses suggest that the Tarim Basin is characterized by a redox-stratified ocean comprising a dynamic oxygenated continental shelf and a persistent anoxic deep basin, which is consistent with the ocean redox structure in South China. Phosphogenesis, enhanced biological pump efficiency and the development of photosynthesis in benthic algae might have comprehensively contributed to the dynamic oxygenation of the marine continental shelf and accelerated the diversification of small shelly fauna in the early Cambrian.

Nitrogen Isotopes from the Neoproterozoic Liulaobei Formation, North China: Implications for Nitrogen Cycling and Eukaryotic Evolution

The nitrogen isotope compositions (δ15N) of sedimentary rocks can provide information about the nutrient N cycling and redox conditions that may have played important roles in biological evolution in Earth’s history. Although considerable δ15N data for the Precambrian have been published, there is a large gap during the early Neoproterozoic that restrains our understanding of the linkages among N cycling, ocean redox changes and biological evolution during this key period. Here, we report bulk δ15N and organic carbon isotope (δ13Corg) compositions as well as the total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) contents from the Tonian fossiliferous Liulaobei Formation in the southern part of the North China Platform. The δ15N in the study section is dominated by very stable values centering around +4.3‰, which is moderately lower than in modern sediments (~ +6‰). These positive δ15N values were attributed to partial denitrification under low primary productivity (scenario 1) and/or denitrification coupled with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) (scenario 2). In either case, the availability of fixed nitrogen may have provided the nutrient N required to facilitate facilitated eukaryotic growth. Our study highlights the pivotal role of nutrient N in the evolution of eukaryotes.

The isotopic composition of organic carbon, nitrogen and provenance of organic matter in surface sediment from the Jiangsu tidal flat, southwestern Yellow Sea

The Jiangsu tidal flat is a significant organic matter reservoir, but quantitative studies of organic matter sources are scarce. In this study, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations and δ13Corg and δ15Ntotal values of surface sediment from Jiangsu tidal flat were investigated for their distributions, influencing factors, and sources of organic matter. TOC and TN were high in the center of study area and correlated well with grain size, indicating hydrodynamic influence on organic matter. High TOC/TN and low δ13Corg and δ15Ntotal in estuaries were characteristic of C3 plants, soil, and fertilizer sources, suggesting source effect on the distribution of organic matter. The MixSIAR model revealed that marine sources were dominant with a contribution reaching 56.9 %, followed by uniform of C3 plants, soil and fertilizer, while domestic sewage was least prominent. This study enriched theories of the biogeochemical cycle and ecological protection in the southwestern Yellow Sea.

Holocene climate events and associated land use changes in the eastern coast of India: Inferences from the Chilika Lagoon

The Holocene arid events and related societal responses are important scientific inquiries due to concerns about their reoccurrences in the future. In the Indian subcontinent, significant number of studies have focussed on understanding the Holocene aridification events at 8.2 and 4.2 ka. Despite these studies, high resolution palaeoclimatic records from the eastern India during Holocene, particularly around the above-mentioned aridification events are lacking. In this study, we present high resolution Holocene palaeoclimate records reconstructed based on geochemical and isotopic data from the Chilika Lagoon located in the east coast of India. A 130 cm long sediment core, retrieved from the southern end of the lagoon, revealed a continuous sedimentation history between 8.49 and 0.99 ka. The variations in organic carbon isotopic compositions, total organic carbon contents, along with major and trace element abundances suggested a strong effect of 8.2 dry event and a shift in chemical weathering at around 4.2 ka in the eastern coast of India. Additionally, a strong warm climate anomaly was observed at 1.2 ka. Interestingly, higher sedimentation rates were observed post 4.2 ka, which potentially indicated a significant change in settlement dynamics and human interventions. It appears that the eastern coast of India experienced human migration and surge in agricultural practices similar to that in northwest India after the 4.2 ka climatic event. It is likely that people relocated themselves, which eventually increased the pastoral activities in newly occupied lands. Consequently, enhanced land use and land cover changes accelerated soil erosion in the region leading to higher sedimentation rate in the lagoon.

Geochemical characteristics of organic-rich intervals within the Cryogenian non-glacial Datangpo Formation in southeastern Yangtze Block-implications for paleoenvironment and its control on organic matter accumulation

To understand the mechanism of organic matter enrichment in the organic-rich intervals of the Cryogenian non-glacial strata, we report high-resolution geochemical data of the well-developed non-glacial Datangpo Formation at a section in the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Block, including iron (Fe) speciation, sulfur and organic carbon isotopic compositions and elemental contents. The organic-rich intervals are mainly distributed in the basal manganese (Mn) carbonate and Mn-bearing shales (intervalⅠ), and overlying black shales (intervalⅡ). The paleo-redox reconstruction shows a transition from ferruginous-dominated watermass during deposition of the IntervalⅠto euxinic-dominated watermass during deposition of the IntervalⅡ, which provides good conditions for the preservation of organic matter. A variety of geochemical indicators demonstrate that during deposition of the IntervalⅠ, elevated primary productivity in the surface water driven by hydrothermal activities and improved post-glacial basinal watermass exchange, coupled with some organic carbon influx from the dissolved organic carbon reservoir, collectively promoted the enrichment of organic matter. For the interval Ⅱ, enhanced chemical weathering accompanied by persistently warm climatic conditions exerted a major control on the organic matter enrichment by importing abundant nutrients, resulting in enhanced surface-water primary productivity. In addition, favorable sedimentation rates also made positive contributions to the organic-rich black shales in the intervalⅡ. Based on a combined analysis of paleoclimates, hydrological conditions and hydrothermal activities, this study puts forward organic matter enrichment models for the organic-rich intervals deposited during the Cryogenian non-glacial period.

Spatial Characterization of Stable Isotope Composition of Organic Carbon from Farmland Soils in Chongqing

Soil was sampled from 182 profiles in typical farmlands of Chongqing and analyzed for the stable carbon isotope composition of organic matter (δ13CSOC). The results showed that the values of δ13CSOC for each soil profile were gradually increasing with increasing soil depth, and the mean values were (-23.63±1.53)‰, (-22.43±1.59)‰, and (-21.42±1.90)‰ for surface, middle, and bottom layers, respectively. The δ13CSOC values in the northeastern region of Chongqing tended to be more negative, whereas those in central Chongqing were less negative. Paddy fields showed the most negative values of δ13CSOC, followed by rice-upland rotating fields and upland fields, with the average being (-25.32±0.93)‰, (-23.17±1.37)‰, and (-24.75±1.28)‰ for the surface layers, respectively. For different soil types, the δ13C values in the surface layers were in the order of paddy soil<alluvial soil<purplish soil<calcareous soil<yellow soil. According to the regression-tree analysis, the crop types predominantly influenced the variation in δ13CSOC in surface soils, and soil types mainly affected that in the middle- and bottom-layer soils. Other factors, such as soil properties (TN, SOC, and pH) and meteorological conditions (precipitation and air temperature) played only minor roles in the variation of δ13CSOC. In short, the stable isotope composition of organic carbon in the surface soils was primarily controlled by the input carbon source, whereas that in the deeper layers was closely linked with carbon cycling processes within the soils.

Records of Organic Carbon Isotopic Composition and Its Paleoenvironmental Implications in Shengshan Island Loess Deposition in the East China Sea during the Last Glacial Period

Organic carbon isotopic composition (δ13Corg) in loess deposits is an important indicator of terrestrial paleovegetation, and it has been widely used for paleoenvironmental reconstruction in aeolian sediments around the world. However, little research has been done on the variation and paleoenvironmental implication of δ13Corg from loess deposits on Shengshan Island, East China Sea, during the last glacial period (LG). In this research, we present optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages, total organic carbon (TOC) data and δ13Corg records of the loess section at Chenqianshan (CQS) on Shengshan Island. Additionally, to study the effectiveness of δ13Corg in documenting paleoenvironmental changes, magnetic susceptibilities and diffuse reflectance spectra were surveyed. TOC concentration for the CQS loess section ranged from 0.11% to 0.47%, and the δ13Corg composition of the CQS loess section varied between −20.80‰ and −24.56‰ during the LG. The average value of C4 abundance was 21.31%. TOC, δ13Corg, χfd, and Hm/(Hm + Gt) curves for the CQS loess section showed similar patterns. The results of our study indicated that the vegetation of the CQS loess deposit was mainly C3/C4 mixed vegetation, and C3 vegetation was the most important vegetation. The comparison between the δ13Corg curve for the CQS section and other existing δ13Corg records of the loess sections from central and northern China showed similar trends and their vegetation succession exhibited synchronous change during the LG. Based on a comparison of the δ13Corg record, C4 abundance and χfd of the CQS section and other global geological records, it was concluded that the mutual effects of precipitation and temperature caused the change of paleovegetation in loess deposits on islands in the East China Sea during the LG.

Diachronous end-Permian terrestrial ecosystem collapse with its origin in wildfires

The Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME) is the greatest biodiversity crisis in Earth history and while the marine crisis is increasingly well constrained, the timing and cause(s) of terrestrial losses remain poorly understood. There have been suggestions that the End-Permian Terrestrial Collapse (EPTC) pre-dated, was synchronous with or post-dated the marine crisis, or even occurred asynchronously in different regions. We address these conflicting interpretations through a detailed geochemical study of a terrestrial sequence in the Liujiang Coalfield on the North China Plate (NCP) in which we apply zircon U-Pb dating of tuffaceous claystone, kerogen identification, and analysis of organic carbon isotopic composition (δ 13 C org ), total organic carbon (TOC), continental weathering (via the chemical index of alteration; CIA) and Ni concentrations. Our study constrains the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) near the base of bed 20 in our sequence at approximately 251.9 ± 1.1 Ma, immediately above a Ni anomaly also known from other terrestrial sequences and the marine PTME. Organic carbon isotope chemostratigraphy together with evidence for algal blooms and the presence of mudstone clasts suggests that the onset of the EPTC in the NCP was synchronous with the crisis in low latitudes (e.g., South China), but was about 310 kyr later than the EPTC in higher southerly latitudes (e.g., Australia). The EPTC predates the marine PTME. Kerogen macerals suggest that a phase of increased wildfire was sustained from the onset of the EPTC in the NCP until the marine PTME interval, implicating wildfire as a major driver of the EPTC (at least in low latitudes) that, in turn, had devastating consequences for the marine realm. • The PT boundary is radioisotopically constrained on the North China Plate. • Catastrophic soil erosion marks the onset of terrestrial losses prior to the PTB. • Extinctions in North China began in terrestrial settings before the marine crisis. • Humid/arid conditions promoted frequent wildfires that were responsible for losses. • End Permian Terrestrial Collapse led to marine crisis through a cascade of effects.
