Omnidirectional video delivery with decoder instance reduction

The omnidirectional media streaming system as specified in motion pictures expert group (MPEG) is discussed. The paper provides a description of the viewport‐dependent delivery using adaptive bit rate streaming technology. It also describes the extractor method: an encapsulation technique defined in the ISO Base Media File Format. The use of the extractor technique reduces the number of decoder instances and also facilitates in providing an interoperable and standard conformant solution such that it enables the deployment of omnidirectional media applications in different heterogeneous devices.

Adaptive Streaming of HEVC Tiled Videos Using MPEG-DASH

Adaptive streaming technologies are used heavily to deliver video content over the Internet, but still face problems in networks with limited bandwidth, for videos with ultra-high definition (UHD) or greater, even when using the latest High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. In this paper, we propose a solution to these problems based on three things: a specific HEVC-compliant motion-constrained tiled encoding allowing tile-based decoding and rendering; a specific derivation of the ISO base media file format enabling a tile-based encapsulation and delivery; and their use in adaptive streaming of tiled video content using MPEG dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP requiring only a single standard HEVC decoder on the client side. We present an evaluation of constrained and unconstrained HEVC tiling compression, and also of the associated packaging and streaming overheads. The results of this evaluation indicate that our approach incurs a complete overhead of at most 7.3% for UHD content, at 10 Mbps or above, when split in 25 tiles, and only 3.5% for nine tiles, when compared with the streaming of the non-tiled video. Our approach also comes with a small impact on client-side players but provides the interesting benefit of being able to deliver UHD videos over bandwidth-constrained networks adaptively, based on its tiled content.

The High Efficiency Image File Format Standard [Standards in a Nutshell

The High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) for the storage of images and image sequences. The standard facilitates file encapsulation of data coded according to the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. The compression performance of HEVC is superior to any alternative image or image sequence coding format. HEIF includes a rich set of features building on top of the widely used ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF), making HEIF superior feature-wise compared to other image file formats. This article provides an overview of the performance, features, and design of HEIF.

New MPEG Transport Standard for Next Generation Hybrid Broadcasting System With IP

MPEG-2 transport system (TS) and ISO base media file format (ISOBFF) standards developed by MPEG have been widely used by various industries and applications including digital broadcasting systems. Recently MPEG has developed a new standard, MPEG Media Transport or MMT, for next generation broadcasting system considering the emerging convergence of digital broadcasting network and the Internet. MMT assumes HTML5 and Internet protocol (IP) as deployment environment and inherits major features of MPEG-2 TS while simplifying unnecessary complicated features in IP environments. It also considers hybrid delivery of multi-screen services. MMT defines an application layer protocol enabling packetization of opaque objects or files without considering the structure of data and media processing unit (MPU) format specific packetization. Synchronization technology of MMT providing flexible synchronization of multimedia components delivered through hybrid environment over multiple devices is built on top of HTML5.

The DVB File Format [Standards in a Nutshell

The Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project develops standards for television broadcast services. The DVB File Format, one of the recent DVB standards, is intended to be a recording format for received broadcasts and a file interchange format when recorded broadcasts are copied or moved from one DVB-compatible device to another. The DVB File Format is an extension of the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF), which is widely used as a basis format for various container formats, such as MPEG-4 File Format (MP4) and 3GP File Format (3GP) developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), respectively.

Transport and Storage Systems for 3-D Video Using MPEG-2 Systems, RTP, and ISO File Format

Three-dimensional video based on stereo and multiview video representations is currently being introduced to the home through various channels, including broadcast such as via cable, terrestrial and satellite transmission, streaming and download through the Internet, as well as on storage media such as Blu-ray discs. In order to deliver 3-D content to the consumer, different media system technologies have been standardized or are currently under development. The most important standards are MPEG-2 systems, which is used for digital broadcast and storage on Blu-ray discs, real-time transport protocol (RTP), which is used for real-time transmissions over the Internet, and the ISO base media file format, which can be used for progressive download in video-on-demand applications. In this paper, we give an overview of these three system layer approaches, where the main focus is on the multiview video coding (MVC) extension of H.264/AVC and the application of the system approaches to the delivery and storage of MVC.

File Format Design for Interactive Music Service

This letter describes a file format designed for interactive music service where users are able to recompose music based on their own preferences. The proposed design utilizes the flexible features of the ISO base media file format (ISO/IEC 14496-12, ISO-BMFF). The techniques offered in the proposed file format enable compact storage and efficient preset management, allowing users to recompose music with ease and convenience. Additionally, an implementation scheme for an interactive music player is shown along with its results.

Digital audiobook: from passive to active pursuit

The digital home entertainment market is growing at an exceptional speed and, although limited to passive listeners, audiobook applications are growing at an annual rate of nearly 20% and hence are playing an important role inside this market. In this paper we propose an architecture to produce interactive audiobooks, so as to transform a passive listener into a story director. Our approach allows interacting with the storyline and the story develops according to the user choices. To ensure transparency the approach uses AAC/MP3 format for the audio stream encoding, the MPEG7 MDS for the audio description and the ISO Base Media File Format for the audiobook file format. A security mechanism protects contents from piracy and malicious alterations. The simplicity of our approach, along with the growing usage of portable devices, may increase the attractiveness and the popularity of audiobooks.

File format for storage of scalable video

A file format for storage of scalable video is proposed in this paper. A generic model is presented to enable a codec independent description of scalable video stream. The relationships, especially the dependencies, among sub-streams in a scalable video stream are specified sufficiently and effectively in the proposed model. Complying with the presented scalable video stream model, the file format for scalable video is proposed based on ISO Base Media File Format, which is simple and flexible enough to address the demands of scalable video application as well as the non-scalable ones.
