Cardan plays a crucial role in power transmission from one source to another in cars and machinery. Given the importance of their task - being transmission of rotation and torque - their design is of value. The design and fabrication of a sample drive shaft used in rolling industry, was carried out in this study as the product is imported for use in Iranian industries. The drive shaft, having U-Joints with two degrees of freedom, is used to transmit rotation and torque from a 1250 KW engine and the corresponding gearbox to the rolling machine at 125 RPM. Initially a drive shaft with appropriate dimensions according to the gearbox and rolling machine (stand) properties was considered and modeled using SolidWorks. To evaluate its performance in loading conditions, the drive shaft was analyzed using ABAQUS, and the fabrication process started once the results were verified. The fabrication of the unit involved making shafts and joints with multiple forging and machining processes; It was finally assembled and then operated.
