A new method for the determination of thermodynamic equilibrium constants in separation processes

A new approach to the determination of thermodynamic equilibrium constants in ion-exchange and solvent extraction processes is described. A plot of the logarithm of the distributing species activity in the aqueous phase as a function of its concentration in the non-aqueous phase has an inflection point. The ordinate of the inflection point gives directly the logarithm of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant of the reaction considered. This was made possible by finding that the ratio between n power of the free extractant molecule (or free site) activity and the activity of the distributing species-extractant complex is unity as this point.

Extraction of uranium(IV) by di-2-ethylhexyl-phosphoric acid from perchloric acid solutions

The partition of uranium(IV) between perchloric acid solutions and solutions of di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phosphoric acid (HDEHPA) in carbon tetrachloride has been investigated at varying concentrations of perchloric acid, extractant and uranium. In moderately acidic solutions of perchloric acid, uranium(IV) is extracted as U(DEHPA) 2(H(DEHPA) 2) 2. In strong acidic solutions, the original ion-exchange extraction mechanism is replaced by a solvation mechanism with the formation of the extractable complex U(ClO 4) 4(HDEHPA) n . 2HClO 4. The i.r. spectra of uranium(IV) complexes in CCl 4 are also recorded and discussed.

Extraction techniques for narcotics, barbiturates, and central nervous system stimulants in a drug abuse urine screening program

Several different extraction techniques, each of which is well suited to large scale screening of urines for drugs of abuse, are presented. Each technique has special advantages, depending on the needs of a clinical operation. In the paper we have compared three basic approaches. (I) Extraction of drugs from urines by absorbing them on cation-exchange resin loaded paper and then eluting the drugs from the paper with two consecutive buffer-solvent systems. Sedative-hypontics are extracted at pH 1.0 using citrate buffer, and amphetamines and opiates at pH 10.1 using NH 4Cl-NH 4OH buffer. (II) Direct extraction of drugs from an urine specimen first at pH i using HCl for sedative-hypnotics and then at pH 10.1 using NH 4Cl-NH 4OH for amphetamines and opiates. When the goal is limited to the detection of amphetamine and congeners only, the urine is extracted at pH 12 using NaOH. (III) Acid hydrolysis of uring specimens followed by direct extraction of drugs at pH 10.1 using NH 4Cl-NH 4OH buffer. Our standard procedure involves the use of ion-exchange extraction of technique (procedure I); procedure II is used for urine specimens of less than 40 ml volume. Procedure I seems best if (a) urine collection is to be paced at 2–3 day intervals; (b) volume or urine available is 40–50 ml or more; (c) pooling of ion papers of the same patient representing different urine specimens is desired to cut down the cost of analysis and work load without diluting the sensitivity of the test. This procedure has been compared with procedures II and III and some of the relative advantages and disadvantages of each procedure are presented.

Extraction of yttrium in the system YCl 3HClH 2O di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid

The distribution coefficient E was determined for the system YCl 3HClH 2OD2EHPA in Amsco Odorless Mineral Solvent in the range of final aqueous concentration of yttrium x = 0·0001–2·6 moles/l., final acidity H = 0·4–12 moles/l., and initial D2EHPA concentration C 1 = 0·3–2 moles/l. and expressed as E  K′X mH nC I p. It was found that Peppard's simple ion exchange extraction reaction is followed exclusively only at low X and a limited range of H. A white precipitate of polymer YG 3, where G  [C 4H 9CH(C 2H 5)CH 2]PO 4 −, was observed in the organic phase at Y = 0·145 in the 1M solvent instead of 0·166 as anticipated. The variation of E with H + concentration was quite surprising.

The solvent extraction of hafnium(IV)—VIII: Extraction of Hf(IV) by some dialkylphosphoric acids from bromide, iodide and sulphate media

The distribution of 175+181Hf(IV) between aqueous hydrobromic, hydroiodic or sulphuric acid and a solution of dibutyl,-di- n-amyl-, diethylhexyl- and di- n-octylphosphoric acids in various organic solvents has been studied. In moderately acidic solutions of halogenacids, Hf is extracted as HfXA 3(HA) x , where HA is the dialkylphosphoric acid and X is the halogen. In strong acidic solutions, the originally ion-exchange extraction mechanism is replaced by an addition type of reaction with the formation of extractable complexes of the composition HfX 4(HA) y . In sulphate solutions, with the exception of dioctylphosphoric acid, complexes of the HfA 4(HA) y type are extracted in moderately acidic medium and in strong acidic medium the extraction mechanism is again changed and solvated sulphate complexes of Hf are formed.

Evidence for Kynurenine in Milk

Kynurenine, a potential precursor to o-aminoacetophenone in dry and sterile concentrated milks, was found to be a constituent of fresh milk. Employing alkaline degradation studies on the basic fraction of milk serum, obtained by negative pressure dialysis and ion exchange extraction, concentration of kynurenine was found to be in the order of one μM per liter of raw milk serum. Evidence is presented to show that the concentration of kynurenine in milk serum decreases as the original milk is heated at temperatures exceeding 93.3C for 15sec.

Liquid ion-exchange extraction of some physiologically active amines.

SOME long-chain alkyl phosphoric acids and long-chain alkylamines can be used as liquid ion-exchangers in a process analogous both to conventional ion-exchange with solid resins1 and liquid-liquid extraction. The liquid ion-exchanger is dissolved in a water-immiscible liquid and partitioned with an aqueous solution of the ions to be separated. Extensive use has been made of this technique in the separation and recovery of inorganic cations, particularly heavy metal ions such as uranium.

有機溶媒にとかした高分子量アミンによる溶媒抽出の研究として,種々の濃度の塩酸溶液からセレン(IV)とテルル(IV)の抽出について研究した。アミン溶液はAmberliteLA-1のキシレン溶液およびトリベンジルアミンのクロロホルム溶液を使用した。セレン(IV)は5mol/l以下の塩酸からは抽出されないが10mol/l以上の塩酸からはかなりよく抽出された。AmberliteLA-1のキシレン溶液に抽出されたセレン(IV)は塩酸,硝酸または水酸化ナトリウム溶液では逆抽出されないが,トリベンジルアミンのクロロホルム溶液に抽出されたセレン(IV)は蒸留水でよく逆抽出された。テルル(IV)は4mol/l以上の濃度の塩酸からかなりよく抽出され, 水層の塩酸濃度が6mol/l以上では抽出率は100%に達した。溶媒に抽出されたテルル(IV)は蒸留水,希塩酸でよく逆抽出された。以上の検討の結果を用いて,高分子量アミンによるセレン(IV)とテルル(IV)の抽出分離を行ない好結果が得られた。

第ニアミン N-ドデシニルトリアルキノレメチルアミン (Amberlit LA-1) の 10% キシレン溶液を用いて, 塩酸溶液からテルル (IV),(VI) の抽出について研究した。テルル(IV)は 6mol/l 以上の塩酸から定量的に有機溶媒層に抽出される。テルル (VI) 10mol/l までの塩酸からはまったく抽出されないが, さらに塩酸の濃度が増加するとテルル (VI) がテルル (IV) に還元されて多少有機溶媒層に抽出される。有機溶媒層に抽出きれたテルル (IV) は蒸留水, 希硝酸で定量的に水層にふりもどすことができる。本法によってテルル(IV)とテルル(VI)の分離を行なったところきわめて満足な結果が得られた。またアミンによる塩酸溶液からのテルルの抽出と陰イオン交換樹脂に対する吸着性との間にはきわめて類似の傾向が認められた。

高分子量アミンによる金属イオンの溶媒抽出の基礎研究として,N-ドデシニルトリアルキルメチルアミンの10%キシレン溶液を用いて種々の濃度の塩酸および硫酸からクロム,(III),(VI),バナジウム(IV),(V)およびマンガン(II)の抽出について実験した。クロム(III)は塩酸,硫酸いずれからも抽出されなかった。クロム(VI)は硫酸および6mol/l以下の塩酸から定量的に抽出された。バナジウム(V)は3mol/l以上の塩酸からよく抽出され,水層の塩酸濃度6～8mol/lで最高抽出率(90%)を示した。バナジウム(IV)は塩酸,硫酸のいずれからも抽出きれなかった。マンガン(II)は4mol/l以上の塩酸から多少抽出された。以上の結果を用いて鉄とクロム,チタンおよびバナジウムからクロム,バナジウムとチタンの抽出分離について実験し良好な結果が得られた。

アルミニウム,鉄とチタンの分離高分子量アミンによる種々の金属イオンの溶媒抽出の基礎実験として,第ニアミン,N-ドデシニルトリアルキルメチルアミン(AmberliteLA-1)の10%ケロシン溶液によりアルミニウム,チタン(IV),鉄(II),鉄(III)の塩酸,硫酸溶液からの抽出について検討した。アルミニウムは塩酸,硫酸溶液いずれからも抽出されない。チタン(IV)は塩酸濃度8mol/1以上ではわずかに抽出される。硫酸溶液からはほとんど抽出されない。鉄(II)は塩酸溶液から抽出されるが抽出率は鉄(III)にくらべて小さい。硫酸溶液からは抽出されない。鉄(III)は6mol/l以上の塩酸溶液から100%抽出されるが鉄の量が増加すると鉄を抽出した溶媒層が2層にわかれ抽出率もやや減少する。硫酸の共存は鉄の抽出を妨害しないが,硝酸の共存は鉄の抽出率をやや減少させる。硫酸溶液からの鉄(III)の抽出は硫酸濃度0.25mo1/l以下で抽出され,0.05mol/lで抽出率は89%に達する。以上の結果を用いて,鉄とアルミニウム,鉄とチタンの分離を行ない良い結果を得た。

Studies on the Ion Exchange-Extraction with High Molecular Weight Amines. VII-VIII. VII. The Extraction of Cu(II), Ag, Cd, Ga(III) and In from Hydrochloric acid Solutions

高分子量アミンによる各種元素の溶媒抽出の基礎研究として,銅(II),銀,カドミウム,水銀(II),ガリウム(III)およびインジウムの塩酸溶液からの抽出について研究した。アミン溶液は第ニアミン,N-ドデシ三ルトリアルキルメチルアミンの10%キシレン溶液を使用した。銅(II)は3mol/l以上の濃度の塩酸から抽出され,水層の塩酸濃度7mol/lで最高抽出率(35%)を示した。銀はうすい塩酸からよく拙出された。抽出率は水層の塩酸濃度の増加とともに急激に減少した。カドミウムは広い濃度範囲の塩酸からよく抽出され,水層の塩酸濃度1～6mol/lの範囲で最高抽出率は97%を示した。水銀(II)は1～8mol/lの塩酸から定量的に抽出された。ガリウム(III)は4mol/l以上の濃度の塩酸から定壁的に抽出きれた。インジウムは水層の塩酸濃度6～7mol/lの範囲で最もよく抽出され抽出率は87%であった。溶媒層に抽出されている銀は4mol/lアンモニア水で,カドミウムは希硝酸で,水銀(II)は6～8mol/l硝酸で,ガリウム(III)とインジウムは希硫酸または希硝酸でよく逆抽出された。高分子量アミンによるこれらの金属イオンの抽出と,陰イオン交換樹脂に対するイオン交換吸着との間にはあきらかな類似性が認められた。

Studies on the Ion Exchange-Extraction with High Molecular Weight Amines. I. The Extraction of Iron(III), Nickel, Cobalt, and Zinc

最近, ウランの精製に関連して高分子量アミンによる溶媒抽出が注月されるようになった。第二アミン, N-ドデシニルトリアルキルメチルアミン (Amberlite L.A-l) の 10% ケロシン溶液を用いて塩酸溶液から鉄(III), コバルト, ニッケルおよび亜鉛の抽出について研究した。鉄 (III) の抽出率は塩酸濃度の増加とともにいちじるしく増加し, 塩酸濃度 6～10mol/l で完全に抽出される。塩酸の濃度がさらに増加すると抽出率はやや減少するようである。亜鉛は塩酸濃度 2～3mol/l の範囲で最高の抽出率 (約90%) を示し,塩酸の濃度がそれ以下でも, それ以上でも抽出率はいちじるしく減少する。コバルトは塩酸濃度 5mol/l 以上で抽出され, 塩酸濃度 8mol/l で最高抽出率約 35% に達する。ニッケルはほとんど抽出されない。溶媒層に抽出された鉄 (III), 亜鉛は水または 0.5mol/l 硝酸で完全に逆抽出される。このような抽出率と, 従来 Kraus らによって報告されている陰イオン交換樹脂によるこれらの金属の塩酸錯陰イオンの吸着性との間にはいちじるしい類似性が認められた。

Studies on the Ion Exchange-Extraction with High Molecular Weight Amines. III-IV. IV. Extraction of Az, Sb and Bi from Hydrochloric Acid Solutions

高分子量アミンによる金属イオンの溶媒抽出の基礎研究としてケロシンにことかした第ニアミン,N-ドデシニルトリアルキルメチルアミンによって塩酸溶液からヒ素,アンチモン,ビスマスの抽出について研究した。ヒ素(III)は4mo1/l以上の塩酸から抽出され,塩酸濃度8～11mo1/lの範囲でその抽出率は92%に達する。ヒ素(V)は1～12mo1/lにわたって塩酸溶液からまったく抽出されなかった。アンチモン(III)は1～4mol/lの塩酸からはほとんど定量的(99%)に抽出される。水層の塩酸濃度がさらに増加すると抽出率はかえって減少する。アンチモン(V)は濃い塩酸溶液からよく抽出され,水層の塩酸濃度が6mol/l以上では抽出は完全であった。ビスマスはO.3mol/l塩酸溶液からは定量的に抽出されるが,水層の塩酸濃度が増大すると抽出率は急速に減少する。溶媒層に抽出され7ヒ素(III)は,蒸留水,うすい塩酸で完全に逆抽出される。アンチモン(III),ビスマスは0.5mol/lクエン酸ナトリウムで逆抽出される。アンチモン(V)の抽出反応は非可逆的であり,うすい塩酸,硫酸などでは逆抽出されないが,1mol/l水酸化ナトリウム溶液でよく逆抽出される。高分子量アミンによるこれらの金属イオンの抽出と,陰イオン交換樹脂によるイオン交換吸着との間には顕著な類似性が認められた。

Studies on the Ion Exchange-Extraction with High Molecular Weight Amines. V. Extraction of Germanium, Tin and Lead from Hydrochloric Acid Solution.

有機溶媒にとかした高分子量アミンによる金属イオンの溶媒抽出の基礎研究として,キシレンにとかしたNドデシニルトリアルキルメチルアミンによって塩酸溶液からゲルマニウム(IV),スズ(IV),鉛の抽出について研究した。ゲルマニウム(IV)は4mol/l以上の塩酸から抽出され, 塩酸濃度8～11mol/lでその抽出率は約98%に達する。塩酸濃度がさらに増加すると抽出率はやや減少するようである。スズ(IV)は広い濃度範囲の塩酸から抽出され, 水層の塩酸濃度4～6mol/lでスズ(IV)の抽出率は最大値97%を示した。鉛の抽出率は水層の塩酸濃度1.5mol/l付近で最大値(約40%)を示したが, 水層の塩酸濃度の増加とともに抽出率は減少した。溶媒層に抽出されたゲルマニウム(lV)は0.5～1mol/l塩酸で,スズ(IV)は0,5～1mol/l硝酸で,鉛は0.5mol/l硝酸またはO.5mol/l酢酸ナトリウム溶液でよく逆抽出された。高分子量アミンによるこれらの元素の塩酸溶液からの抽出と,陰イオン交換樹脂に対する吸着性との間にはいちじるしい類似性が認められた。

Paper electrophoresis of streptomycins.

MANNOSIDOSTREPTOMYCIN in some streptomycin preparations is conveniently detected by the paper chromatographic procedure of Winston and Eigen1. In the presence of high concentrations of salts such as in ion-exchange column eluates, or in fermentation broths, this procedure is not applicable: attempts to desalt such solutions, by mixed-bed ion-exchange, electrolytic de-ionization or solvent extraction, have proved unsuccessful. We have found it possible to separate streptomycin, mannosidostreptomycin and allied substances by paper electrophoresis, having developed (independently) a technique similar to that used for new antibiotic broths by Hosoya et al. 2, and King and Doery3.
