Iodine-127 Mössbauer study of iodine(III) interhalogen cations and related compounds

The 127I Mössbauer spectra of a number of iodine(III) cations and related molecules having four ligands and two non-bonding electron pairs about the central iodine have been recorded at 4.2 K. The Mössbauer parameters are dominated by the primary bonds to the iodine which are largely of p character.

The iodine-127 Mössbauer spectra of some chalcogen–iodine cations have been recorded and the Mössbauer parameters are discussed in terms of their known structures. These cations are compared to other cationic species of iodine as well as with a molecular compound of iodine which contains a sulphur–iodine bond.

Determination of iodide with potassium dichromate and sodium vanadate in the presence of acetone

The determination of iodide with potassium dichromate and sodium vanadate in 6–8 M phosphoric acid medium by potentiometric or visual titration is described. Ferroin and barium diphenylamine sulphonate (BDAS) are used as the indicators in the visual titration with potassium dichromate and sodium vanadate respectively. Acetone is used to stabilize the iodonium ions liberated, in the visual titration. Iodide can also be determined with sodium vanadate in 2–4 M sulphuric acid medium with BDAS as indicator in the presence of oxalic acid as catalyst and acetone to stabilize the liberated iodine cations. The visual procedures are applied for the determination of iodide in tincture of iodine. The formal potentials of the iodine/iodide couple in various phosphoric acid media are reported.

Reaction of 1-phenyl-2, 3-dimethyl-3-pyrazoline-5-thione (I) with oxidation agents and chemical properties of its oxidation products were examined. I undergoes reaction with iodine, nitrous acid, and selenous acid to form 5, 5'-dithio-bis (1-phenyl-2, 3-dimethyl-pyrazolium) salt, 1-phenyl-2, 3-dimethyl-5-sulfinopyrazolium hydroxide, or its anhydride inner salt (II), and also reacts with bromine and hydrogen peroxide to form II and 1-phenyl-2, 3-dimethyl-5-sulfopyrazolium hydroxide, respectively. II undergoes electrophilic reaction with proton and iodine cations in acid solution, and nucleophilic reaction with hydroxide and methoxide anions in alkaline solution.

The vibrational spectra and structure of the bis(pyridine)iodine(I), bis(pyridine)bromine(I), bis(γ-picoline)iodine-(I) and bis(γ-picollne)bromine(I) cations

ir (80–4000 cm −1) and Raman spectra of various perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate, and hexafluorophosphate salts of bis(pyridine)iodine(I), bis(pyridine)-bromine(I), bis(γ-picoline)iodine(I) and bis(γ-picoline)bromine(I) have been examined in various media. For the first three cations, the spectra are sufficient to establish the linearity of the N-I-N and N-Br-N groups, and the presence of a centre of symmetry, in both mull and solution. In the iodine cations the mull spectra indicate coplanarity of the two ligand rings, and there is slight evidence that this persists in solution. Shifts of sensitive ring modes indicate the charge distribution, which is compared with the corresponding charge-transfer complexes. In contrast to the charge-transfer complexes, solvent effects are slight.

THE blue colour which appears when iodine reacts with oleum has been discussed in terms of the formation of the iodine cation, I+ (refs. 1, 2). Recently3, evidence purporting to show that iodine cations are not formed by oxidation in this medium and that the blue colour is due to an ‘inclusion’ compound of molecular iodine and ‘polysulphuric’ acid has been put forward. We wish to reconsider this conclusion.
