Fabrication of Al6061/Ti3AlC2 MAX phase surface composite by friction stir processing and investigation of wear properties

Aluminium 6061 has a widespread applications in the automotive and aerospace sectors. However, because of its poor tribological properties, its life is limited. In this investigation, a surface composite of Ti3AlC2 and Al 6061 alloy was prepared using friction stir processing and its effects have been studied. The examination of microstructure of the fabricated samples were studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructural analysis revealed reduction in grain size within both the base metal FSPed and aluminium- Ti3AlC2 composites. The area mapping showed uniform dispersion of Ti3AlC2 particles within the friction stir processed zone. The microstructure refinement lead to increase in the microhardness. The average microhardness of the base metal was 65 HV0.2 and that of base metal FSPed and Al- Ti3AlC2 were 85 HV0.2 and 135 HV0.2. The grain refinement and uniform distribution of particles were found responsible for the improvement in wear properties. It was observed that the wear resistance improvement of more than 100% in comparison to the parent metal. The predominant wear mechanism, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy micrographs, was abrasive wear with varying degrees and features.

Investigation of Wear Properties and Corrosion Resistance of Electrodeposited Ni-P-PTFE Nanocomposite Coating on Mg-Li alloy

Ni-P-polytetrafluorethylene nanocomposite coatings based on Mg-Li alloy were successfully prepared by utilizing electrodeposition method. The nanocomposite coatings were investigated employing scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The microstructure and composition of the coating were studied by friction, wear and corrosion tests. The experimental results reveal that when the concentration of PTFE is 3 g / L, deposition temperature is 70 °C, current density is 2 A/dm2, and pH of the plating solution is approximately 5.5, a uniform and dense Ni-P-PTFE nanocomposite coating is formed on Magnesium alloy substrate, and it exhibited a low coefficient of friction (∼1.5) and superior abrasion resistance. The co-deposition of PTFE particles can effectively reduce the friction coefficient and wear rate, and the wear mechanism is characteristic cutting wear. Under artificial seawater conditions, the experiments have demonstrated that the nanocomposite material possesses a corrosion current density of 3.9×10-5 A/cm2.

Surface coating of stainless steels by HVOF method and investigation of wear properties

The surfaces of 316L stainless steels, which are frequently used in the industry due to their mechanical properties, were coated with HVOF method in order to improve their properties. Two different powders for steel surfaces; Diamalloy 2002 (Tungsten Carbide, chromium based) and Metco 7202 (chromium based) powders were prepared in different concentrations. Group A specimens were coated with a mixture of 50% Diamalloy 2002 and 50% Sulzer Metco and Group B specimens were coated with a mixture of 100% Sulzer Metco 7202 by HVOF method. These powders produce coatings that provide wear resistance due to their content. The surface properties of the coated samples were analysed by some methods. Optical and SEM images of all samples were taken and XRD analyses were performed. The coating layer is clearly visible. Some porosity formation was observed. Microhardness values were measured. As a result of hardness measurements, it was determined that the surface hardness increased 4-7 times with the coating. Linear abrasion tests were performed with CSM abrasion tester. It was observed that the abrasion resistance increased. After the abrasion test, roughness measurements and SEM-EDS analyses of the abraded surfaces were performed. Abrasive and adhesive wear formations are present on the worn surfaces.

Investigation of wear properties in dry sliding conditions on austenitic stainless steel

The manufacturing industry is particularly concerned with degradation caused by friction, wear, and tribo-chemical reactions. The goal of this project is to model material degradation in the lab and investigate the details of degradation. For the experiments, AISI 304L stainless steel samples were employed. Wear tests were carried out using a linear reciprocatory test system and a pin on disc test system. Abrasive grooves in the sliding direction were present in all of the evaluated samples. The wear rate data for the dry sliding state are compared using the linear reciprocatory system and the pin on disc system. It was discovered that the samples had more pin wear on the disc than the linear reciprocatory test setup. Wear tests on samples using the Pin on Disc setup revealed more wear than those using the Linear Reciprocatory setup.

The investigation of wear properties of different hard filling welding electrodes used in repair welding

The surface of tamping machine's digger is covered with a filler material because it is a material that is continuously used in TCDD (The State Railways of the Turkish Republic) lines and it is a material that needs to be constantly changed because it is exposed to abrasion. For many years, this process with the same method and same electrodes. In our work, we aimed to produce a variety of welding electrodes with a more efficient, longer-lasting and less labor-intensive method for production tamping machine’s digger. Considering factors such as applicability, easy availability, cost, welding method and hard facing welding electrodes to be used in our work have been determined. The necessary materials were then provided. The diggers of tamping machines were welded with 5 different welding electrodes. Then, the effect of each of these electrodes on the mechanical properties and strength was compared. Used tamping machine’s diggers processing was carried out with different hardfacing welding electrodes. Mechanical properties and strength effects of different welding electrodes was analyzed.

Investigation of Wear Properties of Al-4.5wt.%Cu Nano-Composite Reinforced with Different Weight Percent of TiC Nano Particles Produced by Mechanical Alloying

Resistance to wear is an important factor in design and selection of structural components in relative motion against a mating surface. The present work deals with studies on the wear behavior of metal matrix composites manufactured using powder metallurgy technique of ball milled mixing in a high energy attritor and using a blend-press-sinter methodology. Matrix of pre–mechanical alloyed Al-4.5 %wt Cu was used to which different weight percents of nano-sized TiC reinforcement were added. Microstructural characterization of the materials revealed reasonably uniform distribution of TiC reinforcement and presence of minimal porosity. Wear tests were performed using a pin on disk apparatus. The MMCs were rubbed against a carbon steel pin under loads of 10 and 20 N at a sliding velocity of 0.1 ms−1; the environmental humidity lower than 30% and a track length of 1500 m. The degree of improvement in dry sliding wear resistance and hardness brought about by reinforcement is strongly dependent on the weight percent of reinforcement and the wear behavior was determined through the precise measurement of weight loss of the samples. Worn surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

Investigation of wear properties of hydrogenated tin brass heat exchanger

The wear properties of hydrogenated tin brass heat exchanger have been investigated using pin on disc wear tests under different cathodic hydrogen charging conditions. Sliding distance was taken as wear test variable, while applied normal load and sliding velocity were kept constant. The tests revealed that cathodic hydrogen charging resulted in a reduction of the coefficient of sliding friction of tin brass. The coefficient of sliding friction was found to decrease with increasing charging time. However, the friction coefficient of hydrogen charged tin brass recovered to its original value (i.e. before hydrogen charging) after certain sliding distance. Most of the wear debris of the hydrogen charged tin brass heat exchanger had a particle like shape and exhibited cracking, whereas the wear debris of the uncharged tin brass was indicative of mechanical shearing and plastic deformation. The amount of wear debris was found to be a uniform function of charging time. A long time of charging produced more wear debris. Hydrogen cracks across and along the wear tracks of the cathodically charged tin brass heat exchanger were observed. Moreover, the severity of cracking increased with increasing the cathodic charging time.
