Improvement in the reliability of existing dams and those under construction and design is treated as a complex problem in the USSR. It is resolved by careful computational and model verification of fundamental design solutions, the organization of a reliable construction and operational control over the structures, and the timely execution of needed repairs. Major attention is focused on detailed investigation of damages sustained by the structures, finding the causes of the damage, and developing measures for damage prevention.
