Abstract Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used in near-surface detection due to its non-destructive and high-efficiency advantages. Radar waves are continuously reflected in the waveguide structure, and dispersion will be formed. In order to find out the propagation regularity and characteristics of radar waves in waveguides, we use the simulation and field GPR waveguide data to test the radar wave dispersion characteristic. Then, the Dix-type inversion method is used to estimate the permittivity from the radar wave dispersion curve. The synthetic and field data tests show that the GPR waveguide dispersion inversion can accurately estimate the permittivity result.
