Aligning total quality management, continuous improvement for process performance: An empirical review

The fundamental goal of this research is to develop a conceptual framework for performance, continuous process improvement, and total quality management. Exploring the literature on total quality management and other variables in connection to various relationships has been the subject of recent investigations. This paper provides an introduction of total quality management, explains how it transforms into a sophisticated strategy employed in modern businesses, and discusses the literature-based research that has been done in this field. This study suggests that total quality management, a concept popularized by Deming, be investigated in a range of industries in order to enhance product quality, reduce waste, and increase productivity. This study is an integrative evaluation of the prior research on the idea of overall quality management and its connection. Future researchers are urged to make use of descriptive survey and empirical technique to generalize its findings. To reflect comprehensive quality management, continuous improvement, and process performance, this study created a conceptual framework and model. The author created a summary table to display earlier research on the subject, including authors, topics, countries, methodologies, and findings. In light of the aforementioned, the researcher filled a knowledge gap.

The Effect of Total Quality Management on Customer Satisfaction in the Downstream Petroleum Sector in Ghana

Despite the introduction of Total Quality Management (TQM), there is a general observation of customer dissatisfaction surrounding service provision by the companies in the downstream petroleum sector in Ghana. This research sought to assess the impact of TQM on customer satisfaction with regards to the downstream petroleum sector in Ghana. A sample size of 360 respondents, consisting of 290 customers, 60 staffs and 10 management staffs across different companies within Accra was used for the study. The study revealed that successful implementation of TQM has a major and significant impact on customers’ satisfaction. TQM relies of the principle of stakeholder participation and involvement. There was however a shortfall with this principle as it was identified that staff of companies within the industry did not adequately involve themselves in rolling out the TQM concept. The study recommends management of the company to ensure full participation of all. The study revealed that the successful implementation of TQM has a significant effect customer satisfaction. However, the principle of participation and involvement by staff in the quality management chain was found not to be encouraging as staffs have not been adequately involved in rolling out the TQM concept in their companies. The study concludes that management of the companies in the sector should ensure full participation of all employees in the implementation of TQM through effective communication mechanisms to integrate quality disciplines into the culture and quality service activities of the company. Total Quality Management, Reward System and Environmental Uncertainty on Managerial Performance

The primary objective of this study is to assess the impact of Total Quality Management, the reward system, and environmental uncertainty on managerial performance. This research had a sample of 81 participants who were selected from 81 organizations that implement Total Quality Management (TQM) and have obtained the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification, namely the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). To ascertain the sample size, the selected sample criteria consist of one respondent who holds the Production Manager or Marketing Manager role within each organization. The utilized data source consists of primary data directly obtained by researchers from respondents through administering a questionnaire instrument. The proposed data analysis approach examines the research instrument, including validity and reliability tests. The use of multiple linear regression analysis, t-tests, and f-tests will come after performing traditional assumption tests. The introduction of Total Quality Management (TQM) and the development of a reward system have had a noteworthy and favorable impact on managers' performance within several Manufacturing Companies situated in the Nusantara Bonded Zone. This finding substantiates the significance of allocating resources to implement effective quality management strategies and providing suitable incentives to enhance managerial performance. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that environmental uncertainty exerts a substantial adverse impact on managerial performance, underscoring the imperative for organizations to possess the capability to predict and effectively navigate this uncertainty to sustain optimal performance levels.

The goal of this studious analysis is to determine the extent to which sophisticated technology can be used to improve business operations. Today's time brings daily new and rapid changes in the business environment to which small and medium-sized enterprises in Serbia should adapt as soon as possible, often and on the fly. The defined objectives of the research refer to the assumption that business intelligence with its methods, techniques and tools can improve existing business processes in the company, make them more efficient while reducing overall business costs. Research shows that there are almost no companies that have not incorporated the principles of reengineering, introduction of total quality management (eng. Total Quality Management-TQM), "outsourcing" and the like into their strategies and plans. One of the most appropriate ways to create a competitive advantage for SMEs in Serbia, in the current conditions of the world economic crisis and recession, is the concept of business intelligence (eng. Business Intelligence - BI). The work is based on the original methodological approach to the development and construction of BIS and on the testing of the intelligent system and the critical assessment of its application in the process of managing the enterprise.

The modern interpretation of the product quality concept goes beyond just technical characteristics of manufactured products and is becoming closer to the concept of competitiveness. This approach is supported by a number of international ISO series standards. The main aspects of the ISO 9001: 2015 standard, and the effect of the total quality management (TQM) implementation are considered in this article. Namely, effect of TQM implementation includes reducing unnecessary resource costs, increasing the number of customers, sales growing, reducing the risk of wrong decisions, the risk of dependence on individual employees, and more. The introduction of TQM is the potential to obtain significant effects that form the basis of enterprise competitiveness. The article substantiates the division of competitiveness indicators into "external" or obvious, and "internal" or hidden, and provides a list of such indicators. Respectively, the official recognition of the organization’s total quality management through certification is aimed at improving the "external" indicators of competitiveness, such as image, brand loyalty, the commitment of consumers and contractors, and more. The article demonstrates the relationship between TQM aspects, expected effects, and competitiveness indicators. It was visualized that the deep implementation of TQM allows increasing the "internal" or hidden characteristics of competitiveness, namely the satisfaction degree of individual needs, financial characteristics, level of innovativeness, productivity, etc. The article presents the research results that are based on the example of competitiveness evaluating of Ukrainian confectionery enterprises. The matrix method and the construction of the competitiveness polygon were used. The impact of the TQM implementation on the competitiveness through the growth of a group of indicators and ensuring the development and strengthening of market positions of the Kharkiv company "Sweet World Shoud'e" was noted.

On identity reformation and local transition: a case from Poland

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore and understand the process of successful introduction of total quality management (TQM) in Poland and the way in which it impacted on identity of Polish managers.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on a combination of ethnographic research and repertory grid interviews.FindingsThe process of TQM introduction and implementation is examined through the application of translation as a model incorporating cultural and socio‐economical dimensions in addition to individual and organizational levels that shaped the development of TQM in Poland. It then draws on the idea of fantasy as theorized in Lacanian psychoanalysis in order to incorporate the unconscious element of translation process which is missing from Latour's theorization and which forms an important aspect of adoption of new technology and the emergence of a new post‐transition generation of managers in Poland. The paper argues that a complex combination of contextual factors, amongst them the notion of fantasy shaped the process of translation of TQM to Poland, the identity formation of Polish managers and to the emergence of a new post‐transition generation of managers in Poland.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the literature on the post‐command transition by illustrating this process through the fantasy of total quality management explored in a specific socio‐cultural and geographical context and by combining the idea of Latour's translation with Lacanian fantasy.

Employee Participation and Assessment of an Organizational Change Intervention

Amid the debates on total quality management (TQM), empirical investigations of the process of change have been largely neglected. This article examines the process of change involved in implementing TQM and employees’experience of participation, and it evaluates the impact of employee participation in TQM on their commitment to the organization. The research design involved a survey of employees in a U.K. manufacturing setting, with three measurement occasions: 6 months prior to and 9 months and 32 months after the introduction of TQM. The findings suggest that supervisory participative style is positively related to employee participation. The extent of employee participation is positively related to the assessment of the benefits of TQM. Furthermore, how employees assess the beneficial impact of TQM is more important in predicting subsequent participation in TQM than is their initial participation. Finally, no relationship is found between employee participation in TQM and organizational commitment.

German co‐determination ‐ Quo vadis? A study of the implementation of new management concepts in a German steel company

Examines the pressures on the German co‐determination system in the context of the introduction of total quality management (TQM) in a German steel company. The case is a particularly interesting research site because the German steel industry is regulated by the most extensive co‐determination laws in Germany and the German company in question is French‐owned, enabling comparisons to be drawn with the introduction of new management methods in France. Outlines the positions of the works council and labour director towards TQM and the difficulties that they experienced when it was introduced. Concludes by portraying two possible scenarios of the effects of new management techniques on German co‐determination.

A Framework for the Introduction of Total Quality Management into the is Department

The results of an empirical survey of information systems (IS) managers indicated that 41% of these managers understood the basic philosophy of Total Quality Management (TQM) fairly well. IS managers who were currently implementing TQM reported that their IS function had achieved the following benefits: improved customer satisfaction, enhanced quality of products and services delivered to the customer, and increased flexibility in meeting customer demands. The IS managers also reported, however, that these benefits had not been achieved until three-to-five years after TQM implementation. A framework is proposed that can be used as a starting point by those IS managers that wish to use TQM as a vehicle for improving the performance of the IS function.

Corporate management and clinical autonomy: the ethical dilemma in mental health.

Funding constraints and management practices are increasing pressure on clinical autonomy within Australian mental health services. The introduction of total quality management, output-based funding and changes to public mental health policy have promoted business-like efficiency and increased control of resources. It is argued that such moves significantly circumscribe the discretionary authority that mental health professionals have previously enjoyed. This paper attempts to highlight the ethical and moral tension inherent with a corporate management approach, and calls for mental health services to acknowledge the value of intellectual capital, creativity and innovation.

Introduction of Total Quality Management (TQM) into the Process of Teaching Management: A Discussion of Initial Applications

In management education, Total Quality Management (TQM) has primarily been presented as a course topic or framework for organizational change, and TQM applications at the course level are limited. This article discusses the design, development, and operation of a course-based TQM model built upon students as internal customers plus continuous course improvement through: (a) student advisory committees, (b) regular evaluation surveys, and (c) course evaluation surveys. Banking on people

Total quality management (TQM) principles are now being applied in service industries in the UK, following their perceived success in manufacturing industries, with the particular aim of improving service quality. In financial services the impetus behind the adoption of quality programmes is increased competition and higher customer expectations. Studies of the introduction of quality programmes into service organizations in the UK are as yet few, but both these and the large number of studies of TQM in manufacturing point to the need for high levels of motivation and involvement by staff, and the significance of job satisfaction and of employment policies. Reports on an investigation into the introduction of TQM into two major banks in the UK, with a special focus on the reactions of employees. Highlights their success and limitations in two case studies, and draws out the lessons to be learned by senior management and human resources departments.

Evaluating individual performance in higher education: a new challenge for nurse educators

In response to the demands for more accountability and efficiency in higher education, of which nurse education is now a part, this paper explores the evaluation of individual performance. It considers the purposes of staff appraisal and draws upon a study of criteria for self-appraisal of teachers and upon experience gained in introducing teacher appraisal into schools. Different teaching environments are discussed and the additional demands upon academic staff in universities in terms of research are considered in the light of the recent Research Assessment Exercises. Particular consideration is given to the performance of nursing departments in the 1992 exercise and to the implications for staff appraisal. Successful procedures for evaluating individual performance in schools that might transfer to higher education are identified and strategies that might be adopted by nursing departments are suggested. This paper argues that evaluation of individual performance is a worthwhile departmental function which, when successful, may help to create an atmosphere more conductive to the eventual successful introduction of total quality management to the institution as a whole. It concludes that the extra substantial demands upon staff time and energy, at a time when nursing departments are trying to establish themselves in the higher education sector, might be alleviated if the groundwork already undertaken in schools is put to good use.

A quality improvement framework: Application and comparative analysis

This paper outlines how the UMIST quality improvement framework has been used by a variety of companies from the manufacturing sector and by retail organizations to assist them with the introduction of total quality management (TQM). Among the findings are that the framework developed by retail organizations is more similar to frameworks developed by the large manufacturing companies than those of their smaller manufacturing counterparts. It is also pointed out that the frameworks in all four applications described in the paper helped to make organizations more aware of TQM, and to introduce its elements and features in a comprehensive and controlled manner.
