The influence of intravenous solution «Neoreodez» on the course of experimental endotoxemia and evaluation of the regenerative properties of drug in the conditions of application.

In the experiment it was shown that experimental endotoxemia induced by introduction of carbon tetrachloride and bacterial lipopolysaccharide is characterized by activation of free radical oxidation and failure of antioxidant defense system. Intravenous injection of solution «Neoreodez» under these experimental conditions has a positive impact on the course of endogenous intoxication, which is manifested by decrease in the concentration of MDA and DC in the liver on average by 1½ times (p≤0.05), decrease in the level of AlAT and AsAT serum by 2 times (p≤0.05) and to restore the balanced functioning of antiradical protection – increased activity of SOD by 1.6 times (p<0.05) in comparison with the performance of the active control. It is established that two-week application «Neoreodez» of solution potentiate the processes of natural reparation of damaged skin.

EFFECT OF ADMINISTRATION OF DIGITALIS ON COAGULABILITY OF HUMAN BLOOD

Several investigators recently have reported that the administration of digitalis to animals causes a decrease in the clotting time of blood. Tanaka 1 noted an acceleration of coagulation when strophanthin was given intravenously to rabbits; the drug in vitro was without effect. During the past year Macht 2 in a group of experiments concerning the influence of heparin on the toxicity of digitaloids discovered that administration of heparin to cats prior to intravenous injection of solutions of ouabain and digitalis significantly lowered the toxicity of these drugs. In addition, he found that the various digitaloids when added to shed blood in vitro hastened coagulation. Shortly thereafter Werch 3 pointed out that a significant reduction of the coagulation time resulted when digitalis was given intravenously to rabbits. The present study was carried out in order to determine whether therapeutic doses of digitalis would similarly affect the coagulation time in man. METHOD

A STUDY OF THE HISTOLOGIC CHANGES PRODUCED EXPERIMENTALLY IN RABBITS BY ARSPHENAMIN

In the preceding article, 1 we have summarized the histologic changes found in certain organs of rats and rabbits at varying intervals after the intravenous injection of solutions of arsphenamin in single large and multiple therapeutic doses. The purpose of the present article is to record the results of a similar study with solutions of neo-arsphenamin. This study has proved of much interest not only in relation to the subject of chemotherapy with arsenic compounds, but particularly by reason of its bearing on the choice of arsphenamin or neo-arsphenamin for the treatment of syphilis. As shown by Schamberg, Kolmer and Raiziss, 2 neo-arsphenamin injected intravenously is generally borne by white rats in a dose of 0.254 gm. per kilo of body weight and arsphenamin in a dose of about 0.105 gm. per kilo, the latter being more than twice as toxic as the former for this animal under identical conditions.

A STUDY OF ARSPHENAMIN-SERUM PRECIPITATES AND THEIR RELATION TO CLINICAL REACTIONS

Of the numerous theories advanced in explanation of the reactions and fatalities following the intravenous injection of solutions of arsphenamin, considerable attention has been given to those based on the formation of precipitates in the blood which may result in pulmonary embolism and the production of immediate symptoms and even death. REVIEW OF LITERATURE As early as 1911, Michaelis 1 suggested that precipitates found in the blood in vivo may be responsible for fatalities following the intravenous injection of arsphenamin and a little later Miessner 2 showed that mixtures of acid solutions of arsphenamin and defibrinated blood or horse serum in test tubes produced heavy precipitates. When an alkaline solution of arsphenamin was used, he failed to obtain these precipitates. Schottmuller 3 reported the same results from mixtures in vitro of acid and of alkaline solutions of arsphenamin and blood plasma. The experiments were performed upon dogs, in accordance with the method devised by Hurthle. When small quantities (5 c.c.) of a concentrated solution of dextrose were injected intravenously, the viscosity of the blood became slightly greater. By the administration of large quantities (50 c.c. to 100 c.c.) the viscosity was markedly decreased at first, but reassumed its normal value in the course of about one hour.By producing artificial glycosuria, the viscosity was decidedly increased. In the latter series of experiments the surface of the pancreas was painted with solution of adrenalin. The specific gravity of the blood pursued in all cases a harmonious course with the viscosity.
