Intermolecular and intramolecular photocycloaddition reactions of fluoroarenes

The meta photocycloaddition of para-fluorotoluene to cyclopentene yields 1-methyl-10-fluoro- endo- and - exo- tetracyclo[6.3.0.0 2,11.0 3,7]undec-9-ene as major photoproducts, while the intramolecular photoaddition of 5-( para-fluorophenyl)pent-1-ene gives exclusively 7-fluorotetracyclo[3.2.1.0 2,8.3 4,8]undec-6-ene. A reaction pathway via zwitterionic intermediates is proposed.

β-oxa-γ,δ-enones, II. Rearrangement and intramolecular cycloaddition of 1-cyclopentenyloxy-2-propanone.

The title compound 1 undergoes an intramolecular photocycloaddition reaction to yield the bis-oxetane 2 and a formal 1,3-shift to yield the 1,4-diketone 3. This work reveals a novel aspect of the photochemistry of β-oxa-γ,δ-enones.

On the mechanism of intramolecular photocycloaddition of substituted o-allylphenols to cyclic ethers

Osmometric and NMR techniques were used in order to study the ionic mechanism for the intramolecular photocycloaddition reaction of o-allyl phenols ( 1) to give cyclic ethers ( 2) + ( 3). The role of the intramolecular H-bond between the OH group and the π-electrons of the allylic group was ascertained. based on the results of the photocyclization, osmometric and NMR measurements the substituents can be divided into 3 groups according to their effect on the above intramolecular interaction.

ON THE INERTNESS OF SYN-TRICYCLO[4.2.0.02,5]OCTA-3,7-DIENE UNDER PHOTOLYTIC CONDITIONS. AN APPARENT VIOLATION OF THE ORBITAL SYMMETRY RULE

Abstract An MO explanation is given to the failure of the intramolecular photocycloaddition reaction of syn-tricyclo[4.2.0.02,5]octa-3,7-diene. Due to the presence of the high-lying σ-orbitals of the cyclobutane ring and to the unique topology of the molecule, the electronic excitation could not be related to the ethylenic chromophore and/or a possible degenerate isomerization might be induced by photoexcitation.
