The intrahepatic bile duct carcinoma is not common in man or domestic animals [l, 41. Metastasis commonly occurs to regional lymph nodes and lungs in both man and dogs but is less common to spleen, kidney, adrenal, brain, heart and bone. Metastasis to vertebral bodies is reported in man but not in domestic species [l, 41. A 13-year-old, mixed-breed dog with posterior paralysis had a history of progressive posterior paresis. There was pain with rectal and abdominal palpation. A large mass was palpated near the spleen. Sensory perception and spinal reflexes of the rear limbs were good. The animal held the rear limbs rigid and there were fasciculations of the quadriceps on both legs. There was an increase in alkaline phosphatase (500 microunits per milliliter) activity. Serum total protein (5.4 grams/deciliter) and albumin (2.7 grams/deciliter) were slightly below normal. Radiographs showed a mass on the left dorsal and ventral quadrants of the abdomen. Areas of bone degeneration were in the distal right stifle, the area of the sacroiliac articulation, the left iliac wing, and in several vertebral bodies in the thoracic and lumbar areas. Osteolytic areas were noted at the costochondral junctions of the thoracic vertebrae. A tenative diagnosis of cancer, possibly splenic in origin, with metastasis to both soft tissue and bone was made. The liver was enlarged and friable with numerous white, umbilicated nodules over the surface. There were white foci of various diameters throughout the liver. The spleen was three times normal size and composed of numerous white, circumscribed, firm nodules from 0.3 to 2 centimeters in diameter. A firm white nodule in the cortex of the left kidney extended above the capsular surface. Throughout the distal lobes of the lung were numerous metastatic foci 2-8 millimeters in diameter. Dark hemorrhagic foci were in thoracic and lumbar vertebral bodies (fig. 1). Costochondral junctions and vertebral processes in the lumbar vertebral column were easily fractured. Foci of hemorrhagic degenerative bony tissue were noted in several areas. A dark hemorrhagic focus, 3x1 centimeters, was in the wing of the left ilium. The distal end of the right femur fractured when handled and bone tissue was crumbly. The liver’s normal tissue was largely replaced by columnar-to-polygonal neoplastic cells. The cells had pale basophilic cytoplasm. Nuclei were fairly uniform in size and shape. Nucleoli were not prominent. Mitotic figures were prevalent. The
