Unraveling key environmental drivers of spatial variation in plant functional traits: Insights from Dacrydium pectinatum de Laub. in natural communities on Hainan Island, China

Accurate predictions of species distribution and coexistence in response to environmental changes depend on a thorough understanding of how functional traits relate to environmental conditions. However, there is still limited evidence regarding the sources of functional trait variation and the environmental mechanisms that regulate these traits in tropical forests. This study focuses on Dacrydium pectinatum de Laub., a crucial and endangered species native to the tropical mountain forests of Hainan Island, China. We gathered functional trait data from 68 permanent plots of D. pectinatum situated in three regions: Bawangling (163 tree species), Diaoluoshan (127 tree species), and Jianfengling (175 tree species). Nine functional traits were measured at the species level, and their variation patterns and sources were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models and variance decomposition methods. Our findings reveal that environmental pressures cause variations in trait relationships across different site conditions at the species level. Typically, inter-specific trait variation exceeds intra-specific variation, particularly for leaf area (LA) and specific leaf area (SLA). This indicates that trait variability is influenced by how species adapt to and balance specific environmental conditions. Site conditions significantly impact trait variation, especially for SLA, leaf dry matter content (LDMC), and wood density (WD). Additionally, intraspecific variation is notable for certain traits, reflecting individual responses to environmental heterogeneity. At the community level, eight out of nine traits exhibit significant changes in community-weighted mean (CWM) across various site conditions and environmental gradients. For instance, LA's CWM increases with soil fertility, whereas SLA, leaf nitrogen content (LNC), and leaf phosphorus content (LPC) show differences between site conditions. LDMC and WD decrease significantly in high-fertility environments, suggesting a transition from resource conservation to resource acquisition strategies within communities as soil fertility rises. Geographic variables play a crucial role in trait distributions across different community levels, with elevation and soil factors also contributing significantly to trait variation. Overall, our study provides direct evidence of how environmental filtering influences plant functional trait distributions and community assembly. Future research should explore the mechanisms driving these trait-environment relationships and their responses across various ecological contexts.

Exploring intraspecific and interspecific variation of coral reef algae using a novel trait‐based framework

Abstract The development of trait‐based approaches has accelerated our understanding of how communities assemble, respond to environmental change and may best be managed in the Anthropocene. Understanding the magnitude and pattern of interspecific variability forms a critical underpinning of trait‐based approaches while exploring intraspecific variability can identify the potential of species to adapt to changing environmental drivers. Our work is motivated by the critical need for a novel conceptual framework for understanding the functional ecology of macroalgae, as the current paradigm is still mired in functional group models developed in the 1980s. Our objective was to quantify interspecific and intraspecific functional trait variability in three common and morphologically diverse species of tropical marine macroalgae by exploring traits relating to the ecological functions of resource acquisition, resistance to herbivory, and resistance to physical disturbance and the trade‐offs between them. We quantified intraspecific and interspecific variability of 11 functional traits for three common and morphologically diverse species of tropical macroalgae from five fringing reefs of Mo'orea, French Polynesia that were likely to capture a wide range of environmental variability. Differences in traits among species and sites were determined with PERMANOVA, visualised with non‐metric multidimensional scaling, and trade‐offs between pairs of traits explored with correlation. Finally, spatial patterns among select traits across all species were quantified. Species clustered together in distinctly different trait spaces driven by trade‐offs among suites of functional traits. Two of three species had considerable intraspecific variability, though this variability occurred at different scales, while one clustered tightly. Exploration of individual traits across species and sites revealed trade‐offs between two strategies for resource acquisition, growing tall and strong versus investing in large surface area. Synthesis. We captured novel patterns of interspecific and intraspecific variability for tropical marine macroalgae. We found fundamental differences in traits between species that may represent ecological strategies while considerable intraspecific variability demonstrates a wide range in abilities to respond to environmental drivers. Overall, our work provides novel insights into intra and interspecific trait variation that form an essential underpinning for using a trait‐based framework in a taxon that is increasingly dominant on tropical reefs.

No general support for functional diversity enhancing resilience across terrestrial plant communities

AbstractAimUnderstanding the mechanisms promoting resilience in plant communities is crucial in times of increasing disturbance and global environmental change. Here, we present the first meta‐analysis evaluating the relationship between functional diversity and resilience of plant communities. Specifically, we tested whether the resilience of plant communities is positively correlated with interspecific trait variation (following the niche complementarity hypothesis) and the dominance of acquisitive and small‐size species (following the mass ratio hypothesis), and for the context‐dependent effects of ecological and methodological differences across studies.LocationGlobal.Time Period2004–2021.Major Taxa StudiedVascular plants.MethodsWe compiled a dataset of 69 independent sites from 26 studies that have quantified resilience. For each site, we calculated functional diversity indices based on the floristic composition and functional traits of the plant community (obtained from the TRY database) which we correlated with resilience of biomass and floristic composition. After transforming correlation coefficients to Fisher's Z‐scores, we conducted a hierarchical meta‐analysis, using a multilevel random‐effects model that accounted for the non‐independence of multiple effect sizes and the effects of ecological and methodological moderators.ResultsIn general, we found no positive functional diversity–resilience relationships of grand mean effect sizes. In contrast to our expectations, we encountered a negative relationship between resilience and trait variety, especially in woody ecosystems, whereas there was a positive relationship between resilience and the dominance of acquisitive species in herbaceous ecosystems. Finally, the functional diversity–resilience relationships were strongly affected by both ecological (biome and disturbance properties) and methodological (temporal scale, study design and resilience metric) characteristics.Main ConclusionsWe rejected our hypothesis of a general positive functional diversity–resilience relationship. In addition to strong context dependency, we propose that idiosyncratic effects of single resident species present in the communities before the disturbances and biological legacies could play major roles in the resilience of terrestrial plant communities.

Phenotypic variation and genetic diversity in European Alnus species

Abstract The recent taxonomic distinction between the European common alder species Alnus glutinosa and A. lusitanica strengthens the need for studies on phenotypic and genetic variation. Understanding such variations requires the use of populations encompassing the total latitudinal distribution and environmental envelope of the distribution range of A. glutinosa and A. lusitanica. This study aims to describe the genetic diversity and assess the phenology, morphology, physiology and biochemistry of alder seedlings from populations reaching out to the latitudinal extremes of both species. We grew 1579 2-year-old seedlings from seven A. glutinosa and six A. lusitanica populations in a common garden in Oeiras, Portugal. By using simple sequence repeat markers, two genetically distinct groups in A. glutinosa and three in A. lusitanica were identified. The species presented marked morphological and biochemical differences. The southern populations of A. lusitanica showed higher genetic diversity than A. glutinosa populations. Significant associations between four alleles from three loci, and one morphological and three biochemical traits were detected in several genetic groups from both alder species. Traits from southern populations of A. lusitanica were associated with low water availability. Inter-specific trait variation and association of traits with molecular markers suggest that A. lusitanica might have an adaptive advantage if subjected to drought and heat stressors. This study strengthens the recent taxonomical differentiation between the two species and emphasizes the need for preserving southern A. lusitanica populations and their genetic diversity in Mediterranean riparian corridors.

Interspecific variation in Rubisco CO2/O2 specificity along the leaf economic spectrum across 23 woody angiosperm plants in the Pacific islands.

The coordinated interspecific variation in leaf traits and leaf lifespan is known as the leaf economic spectrum (LES). The limitation of CO2 diffusion to chloroplasts within the lamina is significant in C3 photosynthesis, resulting in a shortage of CO2 for Rubisco. Although Rubisco CO2/O2 specificity (SC/O) should be adaptively adjusted in response to the interspecific variation in CO2 concentrations [CO2] associated with Rubisco, SC/O variations across species along the LES remain unknown. We investigated the coordination among leaf traits, including SC/O, CO2 conductance, leaf protein content, and leaf mass area, across 23 woody C3 species coexisting on an oceanic island through phylogenetic correlation analyses. A high SC/O indicates a high CO2 specificity of Rubisco. SC/O was negatively correlated with [CO2] at Rubisco and total CO2 conductance within lamina, while it was positively correlated with leaf protein across species, regardless of phylogenetic constraint. A simulation analysis shows that the optimal SC/O for maximizing photosynthesis depends on both [CO2] at Rubisco sites and leaf protein per unit leaf area. SC/O is a key parameter along the LES axis and is crucial for maximizing photosynthesis across species and the adaptation of woody plants.

Patterns and driving factors of functional traits of desert species with different elevational distributions in the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas

Variations in functional traits serve as measures of plants’ ability to adapt to environment. Exploring the patterns of functional traits of desert plants along elevational gradients is helpful to understand the responses and adaptation strategies of species to changing environments. However, it is unknown whether the relationship between functional traits and elevation is affected by differences in the species’ elevational distributions (elevation preference and species’ range). Importantly, most researches have concerned with differences in mean trait values and ignored intraspecific trait variation. Here, we measured functional traits of desert plants along a wide elevational gradient in the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas and explored functional trait patterns over elevation in species with different elevational distributions. We decomposed trait variation and further investigated characterizations of intraspecific variation. Ultimately, the main drivers of trait variation were identified using redundancy analysis. We found that species’ elevational distributions significantly influenced the relationship of functional traits such as plant height, leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness, leaf nitrogen and carbon content with elevation. Species with a lower elevational preference showed greater trait variation than species with a higher elevational preference, suggesting that species that prefer high elevation are more conservative facing environmental changes. We provide evidence that interspecific trait variation in leaf thickness and leaf carbon content decreased with increasing species’ range, indicating that increased variations in resistance traits within species make greater responsiveness to environmental changes, enabling species a wider range. Elevation, temperature and precipitation were the main drivers of trait variation in species with a low elevational preference, while the effect of precipitation on trait variation in species with a high elevational preference was not significant. This study sheds new insights on how plants with different elevational distributions regulate their ecological strategies to cope with changing environments.

Inter‐ and intraspecific stomatal morphological traits vary in response to topographic habitat changes

AbstractQuestionsStomata can reflect the plant's adaptation to environmental changes. However, the variation patterns of stomatal traits across different habitats and their relationships with environmental drivers are still poorly understood. Here, we assessed the extent of interspecific and intraspecific variation in stomatal traits in two typical riparian forests, and investigated how stomatal traits adapt to habitat change as well as trait–environment relationships.LocationThe Irtysh River Basin in China.MethodsWe measured the stomatal density (SD), stomatal size (SS), and stomatal relative area (SRA) of dominant plant species from two riparian forests: (1) a riparian forest in the valley and (2) a riparian forest in the pediment plain. We analyzed the stomatal trait variation patterns of dominant plant species in different habitats. We then quantified the magnitude of intraspecific and interspecific stomatal trait variability and evaluated the relationships between stomatal traits and environmental factors.ResultsWe found that SD and SRA were significantly higher in pediment plain forests than in valley forests, whereas SS was not significantly different between these habitats. The SD and SRA of trees in pediment plain forests were significantly higher than those in valley forests, whereas there were no significant differences in understory plants between habitats. The interspecific variation in each stomatal trait was significantly higher than the intraspecific variation. Stomatal traits were more related to the soil environment than to climatic factors.ConclusionsResponse strategies of stomatal traits to habitat changes differed between species and functional groups, and trait–environment relationships depended on the habitat type of the riparian forest. Our analysis of stomata trait variation implies adaptive strategies in species of natural riparian forest. Insights into trait–environment relationships could be used to predict carbon and water cycling, and vegetation changes in riparian forests of arid regions, especially in the context of climate change.

Putting space into trait ecology: Trait, environment and biodiversity relationships at multiple spatial scales

Abstract Ecological processes such as environmental filtering and biotic interactions that shape species' traits and community diversity often vary with geographic distance, potentially generating spatial structures in trait variation, covariation and biodiversity data. Understanding spatial structures of trait, environment and biodiversity, or the spatial link between those factors, is fundamental to identifying spatially explicit assembly processes or biodiversity distributions in spatially heterogeneous landscapes but remains unclear. To address the issue, we gathered individual‐level leaf and diameter traits data paired with environmental data from a 4.8 ha subtropical Chinese forest and divided the forest into 25, 100, 400 and 1936 m2 grids representing contrasting spatial grains. Using Moran's correlograms, we quantified the spatial structures of trait variation and covariation, environmental conditions and biodiversity. We assessed the links between those variables using path analyses. Most variables were spatially positively autocorrelated. However, trait mean was more autocorrelated than trait variation or covariation, and intraspecific trait variation was more autocorrelated than interspecific variation. Autocorrelations in those community properties were generally weak at the large grain. Path analyses indicated positive associations between interspecific trait variation and species diversity at a very small to medium scale and a positive association between intraspecific variation and small‐scale functional diversity. Trait covariation constrained biodiversity, and multi‐trait means were negatively linked to very small‐ to medium‐scale species diversity but positively to medium‐ and large‐scale functional diversity. Patterns regarding multi‐trait community structure–environment–biodiversity associations were generally held for individual traits. However, depending on the trait, spatial scale and plant ontogenic stage, the pattern's strength changed, or occasionally, their sign reversed. We attribute spatial patterns in multi‐trait mean and covariation to scale‐dependent variation in environmental heterogeneity and trait variation to scale‐dependent competition. Synthesis. Our study provides novel insights into spatial and scale‐dependent variability in functional community structure, environment and biodiversity, and their relationships. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of spatial trait analyses in identifying scale‐dependent assembly processes or finding the importance of processes to biodiversity distributions in spatially heterogeneous landscapes. A spatially explicit perspective is thus helpful for the progress of trait ecology.

Leaf phenotypic variation and its response to environmental factors in natural populations of Eucommia ulmoides

BackgroundEucommia ulmoides leaves have high medicinal and economic value as a dual-purpose substance for medicine and food. Employing leaves from 13 natural populations of Eucommia ulmoides as research objects, this study reveals the variation patterns of intra-specific and inter-specific trait variation and explores the response of leaf characteristics to geographical and climatic changes, aiming to provide a scientific basis for the efficient utilization of leaf resources and the breeding of superior varieties.ResultsDescriptive statistical analysis and nested analysis of variance showed significant differences in 11 leaf traits of Eucommia ulmoides inter-populations and intra-populations, with an average coefficient of variation of 17.45%. The coefficient of variation for average leaf phenotypic traits is 20.77%, and the leaf phenotypic variation is mainly from the variation intra-populations. Principal component analysis reveals that the cumulative contribution rate of the top three principal components which mainly contributed to the phenotypic variation of Eucommia ulmoides leaves reached 74.98%, which could be sorted into size traits (34.57%), color traits (25.82%) and shape traits (14.58%). In addition, correlation analysis expresses there is a specific co-variation pattern among leaf traits, with a strong connection between shape, size, and color traits. Geographic and climatic distances are significantly correlated, and mantel test and correlation analysis indicate that leaf traits of Eucommia ulmoides are mainly influenced by altitude. With the increase of altitude, the leaves become smaller. Partial correlation analysis shows that after controlling climate factors, the correlation between some characters and geographical factors disappears significantly. Temperature and precipitation have a great influence on the variation of leaf phenotypic traits, and the larger the leaves are in areas with high temperature and heavy rainfall.ConclusionsThese findings contribute to a further understanding of the leaf morphological characteristics of Eucommia ulmoides and the extent to which the environment influences leaf trait variation. They can provide a scientific basis for the protection and application of Eucommia ulmoides leaf resources in the future.

Functional diversity does not explain the co-occurrence of non-native species within a flow-modified African river system.

Globally, there is growing concern on the occurrence of multiple non-native species within invaded habitats. Proliferation of multiple non-native species together with anthropogenic-driven habitat modifications raise questions on the mechanisms facilitating the co-occurrence of these species and their potential impact within the recipient systems. Using the Great Fish River system (South Africa) which is anthropogenically-modified by inter-basin water transfer (IBWT), as a case study, this research employed trait-based approaches to explore patterns associated with the co-occurrence of multiple non-native fish species. This was achieved by investigating the role of functional diversity of non-native and native fishes in relation to their composition, distribution and environmental relationships. Nineteen functional traits that defined two broad ecological attributes (habitat use and feeding) were determined for 13 fish species that comprised eight native and five non-native fishes. We used these data to, firstly, evaluate functional diversity patterns and to compare functional traits of native and non-native fishes in the Great Fish River system. Secondly, we employed multivariate ordination analyses (factor analysis, RLQ and fourth-corner analyses) to investigate interspecific trait variations and potential species-trait-environmental relationships. From a functional diversity perspective, there were no significant differences in most functional diversity indices between native and non-native species. Despite interspecific variation in body morphology-related traits, we also found no clear separation between native and non-native species based on the ordination analysis of the functional traits. Furthermore, while RLQ ordination showed broad spatial patterns, the fourth-corner analyses revealed no significant relationships among species distribution, functional traits and environmental variables. The weak species-trait-environment relationship observed in this study suggests that environmental filtering was likely a poor determinant of functional trait structure within the Great Fish River. Modification of the natural flow regime may have weakened the relationship between species traits and the environment as has been shown in other systems.

Physical traits are better drivers than secondary compounds for leaf litter decomposition in a tropical heath vegetation

Litter plays a crucial role in regulating nutrient and energy flows in tropical forests, and secondary compounds, specifically phenolic compounds and tannins, have been identified as the main drivers of litter decomposition in tropical rainforests. The effect of secondary compounds could be stronger in tropical forests with high solar incidence such as tropical heath vegetation (Restinga). To investigate if the importance of secondary compounds extends to Restinga, we evaluated the effect of 14 leaf litter traits, including phenolic compounds and tannins, on the litter decomposition of 26 species for two years. We found a large interspecific variation in both traits and decomposition rate among species. Specific leaf area (SLA) and water holding capacity (WHC) were the best individual predictors of litter decomposition. When combined with C, P, Ca, Mg, and Na, they were the best predictors of litter decomposition in Restinga. However, the low explanatory power (31 %) suggests that other biotic and abiotic factors may also play a crucial role in explaining litter decomposition in Restinga. Remarkably unlike previous studies in tropical rainforests, phenolic compounds and tannins had little or no significance as drivers of litter decomposition in Restinga. Our results suggest that the importance of phenolic compounds and tannins is context-dependent, and a comprehensive understanding of litter decomposition in Restinga requires inclusion of both abiotic and biotic factors.

A trait-based assessment of southern African arid-zone birds' vulnerability to climate change

Trait-based assessments allow rapid evaluation of species' vulnerability to climate change, but often overlook subtle yet consequential interspecific variation in behavioural and physiological traits. We assessed 241 southern African arid-zone bird species' vulnerability to increasing air temperature associated with climate change. Species' sensitivity was scored using organismal traits (three morphological, 25 ecological, four behavioural, three physiological). We assessed sensitivity under different trait weightings and data availability scenarios to account for data gaps and uncertainty in traits' relative importance. Relative vulnerability was assigned by combining sensitivity and exposure scores. Between 7 % and 17 % of species assessed are highly vulnerable. Passeriformes emerged as the most vulnerable order, relative to other orders assessed, on account of modest heat tolerance limits and reliance on panting, a relatively inefficient avenue of evaporative heat dissipation. Bucerotiformes, Charadriiformes, Accipitriformes and Falconiformes are also highly vulnerable. Caprimulgiformes, Columbiformes, and Strigiformes are least vulnerable, on account of pronounced evaporative cooling capacities and high heat tolerance limits. Vulnerability of Galliformes, Apodiformes and Otidiformes was inconsistent, varying substantially with trait weightings and scenarios, making them priority taxa for research and conservation. Whereas the method tends to inflate sensitivity scores for species with little available data and despite weighting uncertainty, we were able to identify taxa that consistently scored as highly vulnerable and require close attention, based on current knowledge of determinants of climate change sensitivity. Similar trait-based assessments may prove critical for ensuring population declines in unexpectedly vulnerable, or typically overlooked, species do not go unnoticed and appropriate conservation efforts are initiated.

The Influence of Intraspecific Trait Variation on Plant Functional Diversity and Community Assembly Processes in an Arid Desert Region of Northwest China

Exploring how functional traits vary along environmental gradients has long been one of the central questions of trait-based community ecology. Variation in functional traits includes both intraspecific trait variation (ITV) and interspecific trait variation (Vinter); however, the effects of ITV on functional diversity and community assembly remain to be explored. In this study, we compared functional diversity among three communities (i.e., riverbank, transition zone, and desert margin communities) at three spatial scales (i.e., 10 m × 10 m, 20 m × 20 m, and 50 m × 50 m) in the desert ecosystem of the Ebinur Lake basin in Xinjiang. We also analyzed the effects of ITV and environmental and spatial factors on functional diversity. Our results showed that incorporating ITV increased measurements of functional richness at the 10 m × 10 m scale in all three communities (p < 0.01). Rao’s quadratic entropy (RaoQ) represents the differences in functional traits between different species. ITV significantly increased RaoQ at the 50 m × 50 m scale in the riverbank and desert margin community, whereas it significantly decreased RaoQ in the transitional zone community. Similarly, ITV significantly increased functional β-diversity at the 10 m × 10 m and 20 m × 20 m scales in the transitional zone community. Spatial factors mainly influenced functional diversity at smaller scales, whereas environmental factors were influential mainly at larger scales. After considering ITV, spatial factors had less of an effect on functional β-diversity, except for the 50 m × 50 m scale in the transitional zone and desert margin community, indicating that ITV can reduce the measured effect of dispersal on functional β-diversity. Considering ITV did not change the interpretation of the main ecological processes affecting functional diversity. However, it did change the extent to which environmental filtering and dispersal effects explained functional diversity.

Functional trait variability supports the use of mean trait values and identifies resistance trade‐offs for marine macroalgae

Abstract Trait‐based ecology (TBE) has proven useful in the terrestrial realm and beyond for collapsing ecological complexity into traits that can be compared and generalized across species and scales. However, TBE for marine macroalgae is still in its infancy, motivating research to build the foundation of macroalgal TBE by leveraging lessons learned from other systems. Our objectives were to evaluate the utility of mean trait values (MTVs) across species, to explore the potential for intraspecific trait variability, and to identify macroalgal ecological strategies by clustering species with similar traits and testing for bivariate relationships between traits. To accomplish this, we measured thallus toughness, a trait associated with resistance to herbivory, and tensile strength, a trait associated with resistance to physical disturbance, in eight tropical macroalgal species across up to seven sites where they were found around Moorea, French Polynesia. We found interspecific trait variation generally exceeded intraspecific variation across species. Furthermore, MTV within species varied across sites, suggesting future research should focus on whether these traits are influenced by site‐specific differences in biotic and abiotic drivers. Species grouped into three clusters representing different ecological strategies: species that were defended against herbivores but not strong, species that were strong but not defended and species that were neither. Intraspecific standardized major axis regressions revealed five species exhibited significant or marginally significant positive relationships between these two traits, suggesting trait syndromes within species. Only one species exhibited a significant intraspecific trade‐off, as indicated by a negative regression slope. Synthesis. Our results point to three key takeaways that should provide a foundation to rapidly advance development of TBE for macroalgae in the future. First, our evidence supports the use of MTVs for macroalgae. Second, we identified significant spatial variability in macroalgal traits that may indicate an ability to respond to shifting environmental drivers. Third, measuring even a few traits can be a powerful tool to identify different ecological strategies to resist disturbances such as herbivory and removal by wave action. We hope these novel findings motivate future research into a wider suite of macroalgal traits, functions and strategies to further develop trait‐based approaches for marine macroalgae.

Species phylogeny, ecology, and root traits as predictors of root exudate composition.

Root traits including root exudates are key factors affecting plant interactions with soil and thus play an important role in determining ecosystem processes. The drivers of their variation, however, remain poorly understood. We determined the relative importance of phylogeny and species ecology in determining root traits and analyzed the extent to which root exudate composition can be predicted by other root traits. We measured different root morphological and biochemical traits (including exudate profiles) of 65 plant species grown in a controlled system. We tested phylogenetic conservatism in traits and disentangled the individual and overlapping effects of phylogeny and species ecology on traits. We also predicted root exudate composition using other root traits. Phylogenetic signal differed greatly among root traits, with the strongest signal in phenol content in plant tissues. Interspecific variation in root traits was partly explained by species ecology, but phylogeny was more important in most cases. Species exudate composition could be partly predicted by specific root length, root dry matter content, root biomass, and root diameter, but a large part of variation remained unexplained. In conclusion, root exudation cannot be easily predicted based on other root traits and more comparative data on root exudation are needed to understand their diversity.

One of the most intriguing traits found in domestic chickens is the Crest phenotype. This trait, characterized by a tuft of elongated feathers sprouted from the head, is found in breeds such as Polish chickens and Silkie chickens. Moreover, some crested chicken breeds also exhibit a protuberance in their anterodorsal skull region. Previous studies have strived to identify the causative factors of this trait. This study aimed to elucidate the role of chicken HOXC8 and HOXC10 in the formation of the Crest phenotype. We explored the effect of ectopic expression of HOXC8 or HOXC10 on the chicken craniofacial morphology using the RCAS retrovirus transformation system. Microcomputed tomography scanning was conducted to measure the 3D structure of the cranial bone of transgenic embryos for geometric morphometric analysis. We found that the ectopic expression of HOXC8 or HOXC10 in chicken heads caused mild morphological changes in the skull compared with the GFP-transgenic control group. Geometric morphometric analysis showed that HOXC8 and HOXC10 transgenic groups expressed a mild upward shape change in the frontal region of the skull compared with the control group, which is similar to what is seen in the crested chicken breeds. In conclusion, this study supports findings in previous studies in which HOX genes play a role in the formation of the altered skull morphology related to the Crest phenotype. It also supports that mutations in HOX genes may contribute to intra- and inter-specific variation in morphological traits in vertebrates.

Variation and association of leaf traits for desert plants in the arid area, northwest China.

Characterizing variation and association of plant traits is critical for understanding plant adaptation strategies and community assembly mechanisms. However, little is known about the leaf trait variations of desert plants and their association with different life forms. We used principal component analysis, Pearson's correlation, phylogenetic independent contrasts, linear mixed model, and variance decomposition to explore the variation and association of 10 leaf traits in 22 desert plants in the arid area of northwest China. We found that: (1) the contribution of interspecific variation to the overall variation was greater than the intraspecific variation of all the studied leaf traits; (2) intraspecific and interspecific variation in leaf traits differed among life forms. Some leaf traits, such as tissue density of shrubs and specific leaf area of herbs, exhibited greater intraspecific than interspecific variation, while other traits exhibited the inverse; (3) desert shrubs corroborate the leaf economic spectrum hypothesis and had a fast acquisitive resource strategy, but herbs may not conform to this hypothesis; (4) there were trade-offs between leaf traits, which were mediated by phylogeny. Overall, our results suggest that interspecific variation of leaf traits significantly contributes to the total leaf traits variation in desert plants. However, intraspecific variation should not be overlooked. There are contrasts in the resource acquisition strategies between plants life forms. Our results support understanding of the mechanisms underlying community assembly in arid regions and suggest that future works may focus on the variation and association of plant traits at both intra- and interspecific scales.

Resource and seasonality drive interspecific variability in simulations from a dynamic energy budget model

Animals show a vast array of phenotypic traits in time and space. Such variation patterns have traditionally been described as ecogeographical rules; for example, the tendency of size and clutch size to increase with latitude (Bergmann's and Lack's rules, respectively). Despite considerable research into these variation patterns and their consequences for biodiversity and conservation, the processes behind trait variation remain controversial. Here, we show how food variability, largely set by climate and weather, can drive interspecific trait variation by determining individual energy input and allocation trade-offs. Using a dynamic energy budget (DEB) model, we simulated different food environments, as well as interspecific variability in the parameters for energy assimilation, mobilization and allocation to soma. We found that interspecific variability is greater when the resource is non-limiting in both constant and seasonal environments. Our findings further show that individuals can reach larger biomass and greater reproductive output in a seasonal environment than in a constant environment of equal average resource due to the peaks of food surplus. Our results agree with the classical patterns of interspecific trait variation and provide a mechanistic understanding that supports recent hypotheses which explain them: the resource and the eNPP (net primary production during the growing season) rules. Due to the current alterations to ecosystems and communities, disentangling the mechanisms of trait variation is increasingly important to understand and predict biodiversity dynamics under climate change, as well as to improve conservation strategies.

Impact of extreme heatwaves and life-history traits on seed germination responses in Cumberland Plain Woodland native plant species

Context The Cumberland Plain Woodland (CPW) is a threatened ecological community that is expected to experience heatwaves of increasing intensity and frequency into the future. Given the central role that temperature plays in regulating seed germination, understanding the impacts of such heatwaves on key germination attributes is vital to identify potential impacts on plant community structure. Aims To determine the impacts of increased heatwave intensity and frequency treatments on seed germination within and across 15 native species of the CPW. We also examined the influence of interspecific variation in life-history traits on germination responses. Methods Seeds were exposed to seven heatwave treatments of increasing intensity and frequency. Life-history trait data were also collected for each species’ dormancy type, fire response traits, life form and seed mass. Key results There was evidence within the study species of a significant effect of heatwave treatment. Germination duration was prolonged for the two most extreme simulated heatwave events. Life-history traits could not explain germination responses after heatwave treatments, however, larger seeded species had quicker germination onset and shorter periods of germination over small-seeded species; and trees had lower proportions of germination than any other life form. Conclusions Increases in heatwave intensity and frequency have an impact on seed germination responses in native species of the CPW. Life-history traits could not explain germination responses across species along the heatwave gradient. Implications Projected increases in heatwave intensity and frequency are likely to impact seed germination, and thus community composition, in species from the CPW.

Functional traits in Myrteae species: the role of habitat heterogeneity and genus in humid and seasonal tropical environments

Context Morphological traits allow for plant persistence in various environments differing in edaphic and climatic aspects, and their values are normally the result of the diversity of genera and species occurring in a certain region. Myrteae, a widespread tribe of Myrtaceae, is found in varied environmental conditions ranging from dry to wet environments; thus, it is a potential study group for understanding trait variation. Aims Considering that functional-trait variation can be selected by environmental filters, and also be affected by phylogenetic aspects, we used the diversity of the Myrteae group present in different vegetation types in north-eastern Brazil to understand the role of the environment and genus in trait variation. Methods Two morphological traits, namely, wood density and specific leaf area, were sampled in 29 species from 6 genera in the following four vegetation types: savanna, seasonally dry tropical forest, rupestrian grassland and humid forest. We assessed how variation in the two traits was related to genus and environmental conditions. Key results The studied species showed trait variation depending on the environment and genus. Wood density was mainly determined by genus, whereas specific leaf area was mostly influenced by the environment. Conclusion The most important determinant of interspecific trait variation differed between wood density and specific leaf area in this study. Wood density was strongly related to genus, suggesting it is a conserved trait in Myrteae, whereas specific leaf area tended to be more variable. Implications Our results contribute to understanding the causes of morphological and genetic variability in Myrteae.
