Life and Death in Andersen's "Grandmother": A Systemic Functional Grammar Analysis

<em>Hans Christian </em><em>Andersen's "Grandmother" is a well-written short story about life and death. The analysis of the story using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) reveals the meaning and ideology which the writer expresses through the work. In the ideational metafunction, the story uses the material and relational processes the most. The use of the two processes presents the grandmother and her character vividly and clearly. In the interpersonal metafunction, the sentences mostly use </em>grandmother, she, <em>and other objects related to her as the subject. The use shows how meaningful the grandmother to her granddaugher, the narrator, is. Furthermore, the change of the tense also indicates the significant transformation of the grandmother. Finally, in the textual metafunction, though low, the use of marked themes emphasizes the life phases of the grandmother. The analysis of the text using SFG reveals the centrality of life and death in the story. The analysis of the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of the text reveals well the meaning and ideology which the story conveys. Death is only a transform of a life to another life.</em>

AN ANALYSIS OF MULTIMODAL IN BEAUTY PRODUCT ADVERTISEMENTS

AbstractMulitimodal is a study that analyzes the meaning of text containing two or more semiotic systems; linguistic, visual, audio, gesture and place. Analyzing multimodal through semiotic approach has been used in the analysis of cover magazine (Gill, 2015), mascara advertisement (Baykal, 2016), cartoon movie (Wulan, 2017), and music video (Brady, 2015). Meanwhile, in this research the writer analyzes multimodal in beauty product advertisement especially lipstick product. This research is intended to, 1) investigate how verbal and visual elements conveyed meanings in both Wardah Lip Cream Matte Lipsticks and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. 2) find the comparison between verbal and visual elements used in Wardah Exclusive Matte Lip Cream and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the data of analysis, it reveals that the visual and verbal processes of these advertisements are in harmony and they complement each other to give a complete message to the audience. The analysis also reveals the similarities of these two advertisements in the three level of metafunctions. In ideational metafunction the most dominant processes used are material and attributive processes, for interpersonal metafunction the most dominant mood used is declarative and for textual metafunction the most dominant theme used is unmarked topical theme.Keywords: Advertisement, beauty product, multimodal analysis, verbal element, visual element.

Recount Text in SFL Perspective: Pedagogical Implication based on Student’s Writing Analysis

AbstractRecount can be considered as one of the easiest types of text that can be written by students. This might be the reason why the text is learned in both junior and senior high school level. However, there are still a lot of students who cannot produce the text well. This study was aimed to analyze student’s recount text based on three metafunctions in SFL perspective. It is expected that by identifying students’ problems, teachers can decide and design appropriate pedagogical plan. The result of the study reveals that the student’s major problems in producing recount text are the use of subject and verb tense (interpersonal metafunctions), the generic structure of the text, the use of conjunctions, the grammatical errors, and L1 interference. Therefore, considering the problems found in the student’s recount text, POWER strategy is proposed as one of strategies can be applied by teachers in teaching writing, particularly teaching recount text. Comics and medical narrative: a visual semiotic dissection of graphic medicine

ABSTRACT An empathetic patient-practitioner relationship has been shown to improve treatment and recovery among patients, and decrease the likelihood of malpractice suits among medical professionals. It is, therefore, puzzling why an empathetic approach to medical education through medical humanities has not been more widely adopted. The interdisciplinary field of medical humanities includes topics such as graphic narrative. Operating from a discourse analytic perspective, this paper presents a dissection of the place of graphic narrative in medical education grounded in the visual semiotic theories of Kress and Van Leeuwen (2001) and Jewitt and Oyama (2001). Graphic medicine is a form of graphic narrative that gives those suffering with, treating, or caring for loved ones with an illness, a form of expression that isn’t available through verbal communication. Through semiotic analysis of representational, interpersonal, and compositional metafunctions of four graphic narratives composed by medical students at Penn State College of Medicine, this paper explores the significance of empathy in the doctor–patient interaction, revealing that an empathetic approach to medicine is valuable to patients and their families, as well as to doctors and medical students, and should be further implemented beginning in medical school.

AN ANALYSIS OF DONAL J.TRUMPS REMARKS ”MY FELLOW AMERICANS” USING INTERPERSONAL METAFUNCTION

The aims of this reasearch is analyzing President Donal J.Trump statement in weekly address on www.whitehouse.gov entitle “My fellow american” based on systemic functional grammar. The writers focused on interpersonal metafunction which consist of mood and speech functions. The method in this research used qualitative analysis method. The data were analyzed using mood structure analysis by M.A.K Haliday. The text entitled My Fellow American the statement by President Donal J.Trump Remarks is categorized into the text which uses declarative mood type the most (69,2%) which indicates the position o the speaker provider of information and the listeners as the recepeint of information. The clauses in the text are said by temporal deicticity or finite tense the most (89%), while the modality deicticity only appears a little (5%) which indicates that the speaker has no right to persuade the listeners because the genre of the text is narrative which functions only to telling the listeners.There are only two speech functions found in the transcipt of President Donal J.Trump are statment and question. Statement as mostly appeared in the text which reaches precentage 75% whereas question only reaches percentage 25%. So it can be concluded that speech function used in the transcipt is statement with function to give information.

Linguistic Features of Pidgin in Stand-Up Comedy in Nigeria

This study is aimed at looking at how comedians are able to create humour through the use of Pidgin in stand-up comedies. It has been observed Pidgin creates a kind of relaxed environment when it is being used in a social setting because of its informal and non-restrictive nature. This study was carried out by identifying and categorizing the features of Pidgin in selected Nigerian comedy shows, interpreting the contents expressed by the features, and by relating the contents to the humorous opinions as expressed in the comedy shows. The data (five Nigerian stand-up comedy videos where Pidgin was adopted) for this research were downloaded on YouTube channel on the Internet and analysed using Halliday’s Systemic Functional linguistics (particularly the interpersonal metafunction). This was done to reveal how language reflects social relationship between the comedian and his audience and how this language expresses humour. The analysis revealed that pidgin is an informal language, and so its informality creates an equal social relationship in an informal setting which aids laughter. Comedians are able to express humour in Pidgin because it is a no man’s native language, and as such, they could use it creatively to achieve their aim - humour. The unserious and informal nature of the language and its method of presentation make their stories humorous. In conclusion, this study offers sociolinguists and discourse analysts an insight into a field that has not been maximally explored.

Joseph’s Dialogue with the Egyptians in Genesis 47,13-26: From Grammar to Social Dynamics

ABSTRACTThe relationship between Joseph and the Egyptians in Gen 47,13-26 is a disputed topic. Halliday’s Functional grammar offers a system that quantifies the dynamics of social interaction by tracking speech roles, topic changes, and modulation. It is the intention of this study to demonstrate that clarity can be brought to the dispute over the nature of the interaction between Joseph and the Egyptians in Gen 47,13-26 by applying the analytical tools of the Interpersonal Metafunction from the Systemic Functional Linguistics of M.A.K. Halliday. Specifically, the contours of the gradual capitulation of the Egyptians to Joseph’s supremacy can be substantiated from a number of discrete linguistic variables. (10,0008 words)

A MODALIDADE NAS CONCEPÇÕES E PRINCÍPIOS DO DOCUMENTO BASE DO PROEJA AGOSTO/2007

Para Halliday e Matthiessen (2014), a noção de modalidade está relacionada à distinção entre proposições (informações) e propostas (bens e serviços), denominadas, respectivamente, modalização e modulação, que se expressam em diferentes graus. A modalização apresenta os graus de probabilidade e usualidade. Partindo de uma concepção teórica da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (HALLIDAY e MATHIESSEN, 2014), o enfoque deste estudo recai sobre o uso do recurso de modalidade nas Concepções e Princípios do Documento Base do PROEJA agosto/2007. Para tal foi realizada na metafunção interpessoal, a análise de modalidade, levando em consideração a modalização (troca de informações) e modulação (troca de bens e serviços). Como resultados, houve a predominância de valor alto de comprometimento dos autores em relação às escolhas léxico-gramaticais.

ANALYSIS OF INTERPERSONAL METAFUNCTION IN MENGKET RUMAH MBARU TRADITION KARONESE SOCIETY

Karonese mengket rumah mbaru tradition is a ceremony to thank God and to share happiness to the relative and friends because one manages to build his own house. Karonese has a community kinship system named merga si lima, rakut si telu, perkadekaden sisiwah tambah sada. All of them have different functions in mengket rumah mbaru tradition. There is one part of mengket rumah mbaru ceremony that all of them give some kind speech to the host. This research try to find out interpersonal metafunction meaning in the mengket rumah mbaru traditionis. This research employs descriptive qualitative to analyze interpersonal meaning performed in the ceremony by studying the utterances by anak beru, kalimbubu and senina during in one part of the ceremony. The researcher directly involves in this ceremony to observe all the data. Theory of interpersonal meaning proposed by M.A.K Halliday is applied to analyze and classify the mood auxiliary, personal pronoun in pronoun system. The finding informed that mood positive declarative appears 88,4%. Imperative appear 10.1 %, negative declarative 0%. There are 25 modal verbal found in the ceremony, “will 52% must 16%, can 32% 0%. Personal pronoun “we” 60%, you 24, it =9, she3%, he 4%. Tenses shift future 60%, present tense 40%, and past 10%.

SEEING RECOUNT FROM SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE: SINE QUA NON ATTRIBUTES

It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.

Image and text relations in ISIS materials and the new relations established through recontextualisation in online media

This study takes a systemic functional multimodal social semiotic approach to the analysis and discussion of image and text relations in two sets of data. First, patterns of contextualisation of images and text in the online magazines Dabiq and Rumiyah produced by the Islamic extremist organisation which refers to itself as Islamic State (referred to here as ISIS) are examined. The second data set consists of a sample of texts from Western online news and blog sites which include recontextualisations of images found in the first data set. A sample of examples of the use and re-use of images is discussed in order to identify patterns of similarity and difference when images and text are recontextualised. It is argued that the ISIS material tends to foreground the interpersonal metafunction in combination with the textual metafunction (i.e. the stance towards the content and the organisation of the message for this purpose), while the other data set tends to foreground the ideational metafunction (the participants, processes and circumstances of what is being reported). These inferences indicate that further exploration of a larger data set is worth pursuing. Such studies would provide deeper insights helping to distinguish between online material which supports terrorism and that which opposes it, as well as facilitating the further development of multimodal social semiotic approaches to image and text relations.

AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENT’S RECOUNT TEXT IN SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVES

As a demand of English learning, eighth grade students need to be able to write a recount text about their personal experiences. For this reason, this study employs a qualitative case study research design to analyse students’ writing of recount text. The data were obtained by collecting students’ writing in two different classes of eight grade junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia during the even semester of academic year 2016/2017. The self-composed recount texts were selected based on different proficiency levels as suggested by the English teacher of the school. For the framework of the text analysis, this study draws on Systemic Functional Linguistic theory, and recount text. Meanwhile, content analysis was employed to explore the analysis of the writing. The results presented that majority of problems on the students’ writings consist of social function and language feature. In terms of language features, there were still several errors in spelling, punctuation and capitalization. In term of Interpersonal metafunction, errors usually occurred in the Finite as there was an overlap of past tense and present tense. As a result, it was found that most of the clauses were written in material process and it still lack of reference in the theme-rheme structure.

INTERPERSONAL METAFUNCTION IN INTERACTIVE DIALOGUE MATA NAJWA METRO TV

The purpose of this study was to determine the interpersonal metafunction, modes and modalities contained in Mata Najwa inetractive dialog. This research is qualitative. Determination of the sample using purposive sampling. Data collection techniques using methods refer to and recording. For data analysis used content analysis through three strategic stages, namely stages of data collection, the data analysis stage, and the stage presentation of data. The results showed realizationof action in form of declarative clauses were dominant 65.33%, while 34.30% interrogative clause and imperative clause 0.36%. There is a mode of request and provide information, goods and services that fall within the proposals and propositions. The findings in this study modality is probability modalisasi of being 0.36%, 0.54% low probability modalisasi, high obligation modulation 1.64% , the was 0.36% average modulation, and modulation inclination was 0.72%

Modality resources in Spanish during psychiatric interviews with Mexican patients.

This study examines modality in doctor-patient interactions during psychiatric interviews. Twenty three interviews were conducted in Spanish and were video-recorded. The patients are members of a small community in rural California. Using the interpersonal metafunction (Eggins 2004; Halliday 1994) and approaches in pragmatics literature this work reveals the lexicogrammatical choices the patients and the doctor make using both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. Spanish modalization can be realized through modal operators (e.g. might), mood adjuncts (e.g. possibly), and the conditional and future tenses. In addition to these, oral contexts have alternative forms of expressing modalization such as using the preposition como 'like' and tag questions (e.g. right?) as the pragmatics literature has described. This work makes a methodological contribution by highlighting the analytical tools that alternative approaches to discourse analysis (pragmatics in this case) make available and how they complement the interpersonal metafunction. The results of this study reveal that patients use modalization at particular moments in the interview, for instance when discussing their symptoms and conditions to deliver their information carefully and to recognize the social status of the doctor. The doctor also strategically uses modalization when he asks sensitive questions in order to displace responsibility from the patients and avoid a face-threatening situation.

Aspects of a boy’s childhood as a complex social construct in comics

The depiction of boyhood in the Western world of comics underwent a subtle transformation in the shadow of the Second World War. Major artists of these sequential artistic texts (such as Schultz and Spiegelman) fine-tuned key elements in the set of resources they drew on, effectively changing how readers/viewers engage with the young male protagonists in comics. The shift in affect was realized in storylines; instead of these being driven by external, performance-oriented representations of ‘boyhood’ punctuated by mischievous deeds or heroic exploits, drama was created by a much more complex and nuanced depiction of boyhood that explored the internal emotional and psychological worlds of main boy characters. Drawing on representative examples from two different sets of comics, this article applies a bi-modal, semiotic approach that specifically addresses how facial expressions, gaze and speech/thought bubbles, elements of the interpersonal meta-function, construct a more complex representation of boyhood.

Analyzing Interpersonal Metafunction through Personal Pronouns in Song Ci Jiang Cheng Zi. Ji Meng

<p><em>Interpersonal metafunction has been studied in the four translated versions of Song Ci Jiang Cheng Zi. Ji Meng through </em><em>contrastive analysis</em><em> with the focus on personal pronouns. It aims to find out that the use of different personal pronouns connotes different interpersonal meaning and test the</em><em> feasibility and applicability of Systemic Functional Grammar to discourse analysis.</em><em> It also helps people who love Song Ci better appreciate this Ci-poem from a different angle.</em></p>

The Interpersonal Metafunction and Translation of Power Relations: A Case Study of Fifty Shades of Grey

This article aims at analysing how Systemic Functional Linguistics’ interpersonal metafunction can inform us about the notion of power relations expressed in both the original English version and its Thai translation in a case study of the popular contemporary novel Fifty Shades of Grey written by E.L. James in 2011. The study analyses conversations between the two main characters, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, taking place during their intimate acts which clearly demonstrate the two main characters’ power relations. Systemic Functional Linguistics’ interpersonal metafunction is concerned with the social role relationship between text participants and is applied as an analytical tool in order to see how it can explain the notion of power relations when one communicative participant has more power than the other. Analysing the mood structure of lexico-grammar (Eggins, 2004) at the textual level has found two types of clause, imperative and declarative, that are used to construct the notion of power relations between the two characters. Examining interpersonal metafunction’s tenor regarding power, contact and affective involvement further explains the notion of power relations occurring on the contextual plane. Although the findings demonstrate a certain degree of difference in the representation of power in the Thai translated version of the novel, that is, in the use of final particles; it is a characteristic of the Thai language that does not exist in English.
