Problematic internet use and suicidal behavior in adolescents: A review.

Suicide is a leading cause of death in adolescents. Problematic internet use (PIU) has been associated with suicidal behavior in this age group. To assess this association, we reviewed population-based studies that examined the relationship between PIU and suicidal behavior. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science for studies published in English from 1995 through 2021. Only studies with the stated aim to examine the relationship between PIU and suicidal behavior in participants age 13 through 18 were included. Also, each study had to include a measure of internet overuse with resultant impairment/distress. To minimize selection bias, studies with convenience samples were excluded. Seven cross-sectional studies with at least 9,500 participants each met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Five assessed both suicidal ideation and suicide attempts and 2 examined suicidal ideation only. All studies found a statistically significant association between suicidal behavior and PIU. Effect sizes were mostly in the minimal to small range. All 7 studies supported a positive relationship between PIU and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, which could be clinically important. Longitudinal studies with improved methodology are needed to identify risk factors and determine whether PIU is causally related to suicidality.

The association between traumatic experiences and substance and behavioral addictions in late adolescence: A role for PTSD and cPTSD as potential mediators

Background & aimTraumatic experiences (TEs) are a risk factor for behavioral and substance addictions (SBAs). However, the role of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD) deserves further elucidation. The present study assesses the association between different types of TEs on cannabis, alcohol, gambling, and problematic internet use in late adolescents. Furthermore, this study aims at evaluating the role of PTSD and cPTSD as potential mediators. MethodsAn observational cross-sectional study was conducted on one thousand ten late adolescents (510 males, 498 females; age: mean = 18.7, SD = 0.65). Data regarding intentional (iTEs) and unintentional TEs (uTEs), cannabis, alcohol, gambling and problematic use of the internet (PIU), PTSD, and cPTSD were collected. Association between TEs, SBAs, and PTSD/cPTSD symptoms were explored by means of logistic regressions. Mediation was assessed using a path analysis. ResultsuTEs were associated with cannabis use (OR = 1.34 [1.13,1.59]) and alcohol use (OR = 1.21 [1.10,1.35]), iTEs were associated with cannabis use (OR = 1.15 [1.06,1.25]), alcohol use (OR = 1.08 [1.02,1.13]), and PIU (OR = 1.17 [1.10,1.24]). PTSD was associated with alcohol use (OR = 1.59 [1.03,2.46]) and PIU (OR = 1.92 [1.18,3.13]). cPTSD was associated with cannabis use (OR = 3.54 [1.56,8.04]) and PIU (OR = 5.13 [2.71,9.70]). cPTSD mediated 58.75% of the total effect of iTEs on cannabis. Regarding PIU, PTSD mediated 68.18% of the effect of uTEs; the effect of iTEs on PIU was mediated by 65.5% via cPTSD and 34.45% via PTSD. ConclusioncPTSD and SBAs show a complex pattern of association. A thorough assessment of stress-related conditions, including cPTSD, is of pivotal importance in treating SBAs.

Adolescent internet use predicts higher levels of generalized and social anxiety symptoms for girls but not boys

Past research suggests that internet use can increase the risks of internalizing symptoms in adolescents. However, bidirectional relationships between adolescent internet use and anxiety symptoms have received very little attention. Furthermore, few studies have examined these links according to sex. The present study attempts to fill this gap by investigating longitudinal associations between Canadian boys’ and girls’ internet use and symptoms of generalized anxiety and social anxiety using data from the Quebec longitudinal Study of Child Development. A sample of 1324 adolescents (698 girls, 626 boys) self-reported the number of hours per week they spent on the internet and their symptoms of generalized and social anxiety at ages 15 and 17. We estimated two cross-lagged panel models with social or generalized anxiety symptoms and internet use at age 15 predicting those same variables at age 17. Sex was used as a grouping variable and socioeconomic status was included as a control variable. Internet use at 15 predicted generalized and social anxiety symptoms at age 17 in girls, but not boys. Social and generalized anxiety symptoms at age 15 did not predict internet use at age 17 for both boys and girls. These results suggest that internet use can be a significant risk factor for the development of anxiety symptoms in adolescent girls. Girls may be more vulnerable to the negative effects of internet use due to increased sensitivity to social comparisons. Thus, helping girls develop healthier internet use habits should be a target for promoting their mental health.

“Belonging without being”: Relationships between problematic gaming, internet use, and social group attachment in adolescence

Gaming and Internet use are positively associated with benefits for interpersonal relationships in adolescence, with these behaviors when excessive having been negatively linked with positive aspects of interpersonal connections, such as secure attachment. Using a representative sample of 7918 Portuguese adolescents, with ages ranging from 13 to 19 (Mage = 15.5, 53.3% females), and three self-report measures of problematic gaming, problematic Internet use, and social group attachment (secure, anxious, avoidant), this cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations between problematic gaming, as well as problematic Internet use, and secure and insecure (anxious and avoidant) social group attachment styles, in the groups with and without these problems. In the groups without problematic gaming and without problematic Internet use, excessive gaming and involvement with the Internet were negatively associated with secure social group attachment and positively associated with anxious social group attachment; on the other hand, in the groups with severe levels of these problems, problematic gaming and Internet use were positively associated with secure social group attachment and negatively associated with anxious social group attachment. These results go against what had been initially hypothesized and suggest that in the case of adolescents with severe levels of these problems, they may serve as an effective compensatory mechanism for coping with the negative effects of insecure attachment styles, which in turn likely contributes to the maintenance of problematic gaming and Internet use.

Problematic Internet Use in Early Adolescents: Gender and Loneliness Differences in a Latent Growth Model.

Based on the Cognitive-Behavioral model and the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model, this study examined the developmental trajectory of problematic Internet use (PIU) in early adolescents and explored whether there were gender differences in the onset level and rate of development of this developmental trajectory, and tested whether developmental changes in loneliness could have an impact on the developmental trajectory of problematic Internet use. This longitudinal study collected data on PIU and loneliness from 296 early adolescents (Mage=11.65, SD=0.58) in four waves. The development of PIU in adolescents and the effects of gender and loneliness development on PIU development were examined using a latent growth model. The results revealed that individuals' PIU development showed a nonlinear latent growth model, with PIU significantly higher than 0 in grade 6 and its growth rate slowing down as PIU increased. Individuals' PIU at low starting levels developed more rapidly later. Boys had higher initial levels of PIU but their PIU developed and increased at the same rate as girls'. Both the initial value and slope of loneliness had a significant effect on the initial value and slope of boys' and girls' PIU. Interventions for PIU in early adolescents also need to consider loneliness at the same time, and intervention groups can focus on individuals with low initial levels of PIU, boys, and individuals with high levels of loneliness.

Relationship of Problematic Internet Use with Emotion Regulation in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between problematic internet use and emotion regulation in adolescents diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Adolescents diagnosed with ADHD were given the Young Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS). They were divided into two groups problematic internet use (PIU) above 50 points (n=41) and normal internet use (NIU) below 50 points (n=41). The groups were compared by giving the AtillaTurgay DSM-IV Based for Child and Adolescent DistruptiveBehaviour Disorders Rating Scale (ATS) to the parents and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) to the adolescents. Results: The sample consisted of 25 (30.5%) girls and 57 (69.5%) boys, with a mean age of 14±1.8 years. Major depressive disorder (p=0.012), conduct disorder (p=0.034), and elimination disorder (p=0.040) were significantly higher in the PIU group compared to the NIU group. The mean scores of the YIAS, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) subscale of ATS, and the goals subscale of DERS were higher in the PIU group (p<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between YIAS and DERS (p=0.030). Conclusion: The attendance of ADHD with problematic internet use increases emotion regulation difficulties and morbidity. There is a need for studies with a larger sample size and including healthy controls.

Problematic internet use and sleep quality in adolescents with major depressive disorder

ABSTRACT This study aims to compare adolescents newly diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls in terms of problematic internet use (PIU) and sleep quality. The study sample consisted of 50 newly diagnosed MDD patients aged 12–18 years and 50 healthy controls. Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) was administered to all cases by a child psychiatrist and sociodemographic data were collected. Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Internet Addiction Test (IAT) were administered to all participants. Data of the MDD and control groups were compared using Student’s t-test or Mann-Whitney U test and the total scores of the IAT (z = −6.23, p < 0.001) and PSQI (t =–11.42, p < 0.001) scales were found to be significantly higher in MDD cases compared to the control group. The results of analysis of covariance demonstrated that there was a significant positive correlation between CDI and IAT, as well as CDI and PSQI total scores in patients with MDD. While no correlation was observed between the total scores of the IAT and PSQI scales in the MDD group, a significant positive correlation was found between the total scores of the IAT and PSQI scales in the healthy control group. Furthermore, there was a significant difference between the PSQI habitual sleep efficiency subscale score and the IAT total score (r = 0.36, p = 0.009), and the IAT responsibility (r = 0.34, p = 0.015), relationship (r = 0.36, p = 0.01), and mood subscale scores (r = 0.30, p = 0.03). A significant positive correlation was also found between the IAT duration subscale score and PSQI sleep disorder subscale score (r = 0.35, p = 0.013). In addition, binary logistic regression analysis showed that PSQI total score (B = 0.79, p < 0.001) and IAT total scores (B = 0.08, p = 0.001) could be significant predictors of MDD. The findings of this study indicate that the prevalence of PIU and poor sleep quality is higher in adolescents with newly diagnosed MDD compared to healthy controls. The results of our study indicated that the severity of depression, PIU, and sleep quality were significantly correlated in adolescents with newly diagnosed MDD, while PIU and sleep quality were correlated in adolescents without any psychiatric disorders. In addition, this study suggests that poor sleep quality and PIU may be risk factors for MDD.

Problematic Internet Use in adolescents: New psychometric evidence for the Spanish short form of the Compulsive Internet Use Scale.

Problematic Internet Use (PIU) has become a worldwide problem in recent years. Among screening instruments for PIU, the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS) is perhaps the most widelyused. Psychometric properties of the full CIUS are not convincing, however, and the short form (CIUS-S) has shown promising results, albeit limited to the English version, with little evidence in Spanish. Therefore, the aim of the present work was to study the psychometric properties of the CIUS-S scores in a large sample of Spanish adolescents. The sample consisted of 1790 participants, 816 male (45.6%), 961 female (53.7%), and 13 other (0.7%) . Mean age was 15.70years (SD=1.26). The five-items one-dimensional model displayed appropriate goodness-of-fit indices. Strong measurement invariance model across age and partial across gender was found. Furthermore, the CIUS-S was positively associated with several indicators of poor well-being and mental health, and negatively associated with prosocial behavior, self-esteem, and feeling of belonging. Overall, the CIUS-S scores appear reliable and valid in its Spanish version for adolescent populations, supporting its aim to detect and prevent a problem that has become a major worldwide issue in the last years.

The relationship between pathological internet use and psychiatric difficulties in adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic

Objectives: Internet addiction has been attracting widespread interest due to the increase in screen time related to lectures, decrease in social activities and spending more time at home due to the education restriction all over the world. It was aimed to determine the psychiatric difficulties for before pandemic period and distance education period, separately and to evaluate the relationship between adolescents' pathological internet usage and difference in psychiatric difficulties. Methods: Four hundred thirty-eight adolescents aged 11-17 years, secondary and high school students were included in the study. An online survey was created consists of “Young Internet Addiction Test-brief form” (IAT), “Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire” (SDQ) and researcher form using Google forms application. Youths completed the SDQ retrospectively for two separate time points: during the school restriction period and before the pandemic. Results: According to the results of our study, the number of changed areas (sleep, eating habits, leisure/social/physical activities) (B= 3.071, p &amp;lt; 0.001) and the change in SDQ-Peer relationship subscale score (B=1.193, p = 0.019) were among the factors significantly predict pathological internet use levels, respectively. Conclusions: Studies enable understanding the relationship between pathological internet usage and psychiatric difficulties would be useful for the organization of preventive interventions in case similar outbreaks occurred in the future.

Association Between Problematic Internet Use and Health Risks in Adolescents With and Without Chronic Health Conditions

Background. Sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are modifiable health risks that often develop during adolescence. A comprehensive analysis of unhealthy behaviors in adolescents with and without chronic health conditions (CHC) could inform the development of more effective prevention approaches.&#x0D; The aim. This study aimed to measure associations between Problematic Internet Use (PIU), lifestyle habits and subjective health complaints among adolescents with and without CHC. In addition, health behaviors and prevalence of subjective health complaints between adolescents with and without CHC were compared.&#x0D; Methods. A total of 171 adolescents (87 without CHC and 84 with CHC) completed an online survey. The PIU was assessed by the Problematic and Risky Internet Use Screening Scale. The subjective health complaints assessed were somatic and psychological symptoms. Healthy lifestyle behaviors assessed were daily physical activities, time spent by screens, eating habits, and duration of sleep.&#x0D; Results. The results showed that 21.83% of adolescents with CHC and 36.78% without CHC scored at risk for problematic internet use. Adolescents without CHC reported significantly more frequent psychological health complaints than their peers with CHC. This study found that multiple health complaints and unhealthy eating habits were significantly associated with PIU in adolescents with CHC, while nervousness and eating fast food in adolescents without CHC. Girls without CHC reported significantly higher PRIUSS scores and prevalence of subjective health complaints than boys (p &lt;.05).&#x0D; Conclusions. Adolescents without CHC reported significantly higher levels of moderate and vigorous intensity physical activities weekly than their peers with CHC. PIU behaviors are mainly associated with psychological health complaints and unhealthy eating behaviors in adolescents with and without CHC. These findings highlight the need to identify the specific problematic internet use activities that are associated with different health risks in adolescents.&#x0D; Keywords: problematic internet use, chronic health conditions, lifestyle behaviors, health, adolescents.

Prevalence of problematic Internet use and problematic gaming in Spanish adolescents

Epidemiological studies on problematic Internet use and problematic gaming conducted so far have mainly been carried out with unrepresentative and self-selected convenience samples, resulting in unreliable prevalence rates. This study estimates the prevalence of problematic Internet use and problematic gaming in a large sample of Spanish adolescents (N = 41,507) and identifies risk and protective factors for these risky behaviours. Data were collected online using the Adolescent Problem Internet Use Scale and the Adolescent Gaming Addiction Scale. Using a cut-off approach with measurement instruments inspired by the DSM-5 framework, we found a prevalence of 33% for problematic Internet use and 3.1% for problematic gaming. With a more conservative approach inspired by the ICD-11 framework, prevalence rates decreased to 2.98% for problematic Internet use and 1.8% for problematic gaming. Female gender, higher parents’ education, elevated Internet connection time, reporting being online after midnight and using the mobile phone in class predicted problematic Internet use; whereas male gender, “living situation” where families do not have a traditional structure or stable environment, elevated Internet connection time and reporting using the mobile phone in class predicted problematic gaming. A cut-off approach involving scales that recycle substance use criteria (as in the DSM-5) over-pathologize Internet use and gaming behaviours. In contrast, the ICD-11 approach seems to provide more realistic and reliable prevalence rates.

Dissociative Trait as a Mediator of Problematic Internet Use in Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity Disorder and Learning Disabilities.

This study used data from a national birth cohort study to investigate the duration of internet use at the age of 12 years among children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities (IDs) and learning disabilities (LDs) at the age of five and a half years (66 months) to understand whether an ADHD, ASD, ID and LD diagnosis in childhood increases the risk of problematic internet use (PIU) in adolescence. Furthermore, the pathway relationship of dissociative absorptive trait with PIU and these diagnoses was also investigated. The 5.5- and 12-year-old Taiwan Birth Cohort Study dataset was used (N = 17,694). More boys were diagnosed with LDs, IDs, ADHD and ASD; however, girls were at increased likelihood of PIU. ID and ASD diagnoses were not associated with increasing PIU likelihood. However, children who had been diagnosed with LDs and ADHD, along with higher dissociative absorptive trait, had an indirectly increased likelihood of PIU in adolescence. Dissociative absorption was found to be a mediating factor between childhood diagnosis and PIU and can be used as a screening indicator in prevention programs to reduce the duration and severity of PIU in children diagnosed with ADHD and LDs. Furthermore, with the increased prevalence of smartphone usage in adolescents, education policy-makers should pay greater attention to the issue of PIU in female adolescents.

Internet Addiction and Online Gaming Disorder in Children and Adolescents During COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review.

The Indonesian government has enforced several social restrictions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) virus, such as closures of in-person schools, public areas, and playgrounds as well as reduced outdoor activities. These restrictions will affect mental health of school-age children and adolescents. The internet is chosen as one of the media to keep academic activities running, but excessive internet use will increase internet addiction and online gaming disorder. This study aimed to understand the prevalence and psychological impacts of internet addiction and online gaming disorder on children and adolescents globally during the pandemic. Systematic searches were carried out on the PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar search engines. All studies were assessed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 criteria and the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. Five studies met the criteria for assessing internet addiction and online gaming disorder cases in children and adolescents. Four studies discussed internet addiction, and one study addressed the negative impacts of online gaming on children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been an increase in internet use and online gaming disruption in children and adolescents in almost all parts of Asian and Australian countries during the COVID-19 pandemic period.

The Relationship Between Problematic Internet Use of Adolescents and Their Level of Satisfaction with Family Life

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the level of problematic internet use of adolescents and their level of satisfaction with family life.&#x0D; Method: The research was conducted in a cross-sectional descriptive design. 508 volunteer students from among the students studying at the high schools in Yozgat city center participated in the research which was carried out in the 2021-2022 academic year.. Data were collected through Google Forms questionnaires sent to students' smartphones. &#x0D; Results: The results of the analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between the problematic internet use of adolescents and their level of satisfaction with family life. Accordingly, a significant difference was determined between the variables of family income, academic achievement, father's educational background and father's child-rearing attitudes and problematic internet use. Furthermore, a significant difference was determined between the variables of academic achievement, parents’ living together, father's educational background, father's working status, family's economic income and the level of satisfaction with family life.&#x0D; Conclusion: In this study, the significance of the family with regard to the development of adolescents as healthy internet users was emphasized; it was suggested that preventive, protective and educational studies should be carried out and that the use of different methods, including other possible predictors, should be included in follow-up studies.

Is adolescent internet use a risk factor for the development of depression symptoms or vice-versa?

The extent to which digital media use by adolescents contributes to poor mental health, or vice-versa, remains unclear. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the strength and direction of associations between adolescent internet use and the development of depression symptoms using a longitudinal modeling approach. We also examine whether associations differ for boys and girls. Data are drawn from (N = 1547) participants followed for the Quebec longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD 1998-2020). Youth self-reported internet use in terms of the average hours of use per week at the ages of 13, 15, and 17. Youth also self-reported depression symptoms at the same ages. After testing sex-invariance, random intercepts cross-lagged panel models stratified by sex, revealed that internet use by girls was associated with significant within-person (time-varying) change in depression symptoms. Girl's internet use at age 13 was associated with increased depression symptoms at age 15 (ß = 0.12) and internet use at age 15 increased depression at age 17 (ß = 0.10). For boys, internet use was not associated with significant time varying change in depression symptoms. The present findings support the hypothesis that internet use by adolescents can represent a significant risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms, particularly in girls.

Problematic internet use in adolescents: A phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on problematic internet use (PIU) are mostly on the non-clinical population. Understanding the experiences of adolescents with PIU is critical in shaping nursing interventions and improving the quality of care. A comprehensive description of the experiences of adolescents with PIU. In the study, descriptive phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Data were collected using a personal information form and a semi-structured interview form and analysed using Giorgi's phenomenological method (n=11). As a result of the content analysis, five main themes were identified: reasons of PIU, internet-related perceptions, experiences in accessing the internet, experiences in not being able to access the internet and consequences of internet use. Different from previous studies, adolescents stated that they use the internet because of their lack of activity and their need to spend time with their friends. They stated that when they could not access the internet, they thought they could never live without the internet and started quarrel.

An initial investigation of the role of depressive and anxious syndromes in Problematic Internet Use in adolescence and young adults

Depressive and anxious syndromes have been proposed as risk factors and as consequences of Problematic Internet Use (PIU). There has been no study relating affective symptoms in subjects with Problematic Internet Use and those with major depressive and anxious syndromes. In this study, three samples were collected: two from ambulatory clinical settings of the North Lisbon Hospital Centre (1. Centre for PIU and 2. Out-patient psychiatry consultation for adolescents and young adults) and a control group from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Internet use profile and affective psychopathology were assessed and socio-demographic characteristics were controlled. The results revealed that both the PIU group and the clinical group presented significantly higher depression and anxiety scores than the control group while there was no significant difference between them. Also, Problematic Internet Users, similarly to the clinical group, tend to live in less functional families. We speculate that the similitude between samples and yet such different clinical presentations could be explained if Internet acted as a buffer to affective psychopathology. These findings warrant exploring the possibility of PIU as new (and generation biased) psychopathology of depressive or anxious states.

Problematic Internet Use among Adolescents 18 Months after the Onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Studies in recent years and especially since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic have shown a significant increase in the problematic use of computer games and social media. Adolescents having difficulties in regulating their unpleasant emotions are especially prone to Problematic Internet Use (PIU), which is why emotion dysregulation has been considered a risk factor for PIU. The aim of the present study was to assess problematic internet use (PIU) in adolescents after the third wave (nearly 1.5 years after the onset in Europe) of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the German region of Siegen-Wittgenstein, all students 12 years and older from secondary-level schools, vocational schools and universities were offered a prioritized vaccination in August 2021 with an approved vaccine against COVID-19. In this context, the participants filled out the Short Compulsive Internet Use Scale (SCIUS) and two additional items to capture a possible change in digital media usage time and regulation of negative affect due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A multiple regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of PIU. The original sample consisted of 1477 participants, and after excluding invalid cases the final sample size amounted to 1268 adolescents aged 12-17 (x = 14.37 years, SD = 1.64). The average prevalence of PIU was 43.69%. Gender, age, digital media usage time and the intensity of negative emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic were all found to be significant predictors of PIU: female gender, increasing age, longer digital media usage time and higher intensity of negative emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic were associated with higher SCIUS total scores. This study found a very high prevalence of PIU among 12- to 17-year-olds for the period after the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has increased significantly compared to pre-pandemic prevalence rates. PIU is emerging as a serious problem among young people in the pandemic. Besides gender and age, pandemic-associated time of digital media use and emotion regulation have an impact on PIU, which provides starting points for preventive interventions.
