First-year dental students' motivation and attitudes for choosing the dental profession.

To determine first-year dental students' current motivation and attitudes for choosing the dental profession at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Medical University - Sofia, Bulgaria. An anonymous questionnaire, consisting of 12 questions about students' socio-demographic profile and their motivation for choosing dentistry, was administered to 119 first-year dental students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Medical University of Sofia. The study was conducted at the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year. The data was processed and analyzed with the following software: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2; Microsoft SQL Server 2008; Internet Information Server 7.5.; Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. The majority of the students (73%) were self-motivated for choosing dentistry as a career; 61% of them did not have relatives in the medical profession; 43% chose dental medicine because it is a prestigious, humane and noble profession; 50% - for financial security; 59% - because of the independence that it provides. There were no significant differences in the motivation between males and females. Independence, financial security and 'prestige' were the predominant motivating factors in this group of first-year dental students. Determining the reasons for choosing dentistry has important implications for the selection and training of students as well as for their future job satisfaction.

Investigations on implementation of e-ATM Web Services based on .NET technique

Web service is accepted by all communities of services due to its interoperability, flexibility of design and architecture. Improving performance is the key research point for developers and researchers. We propose to design, develop and implement a prototype research electronic automated teller machine web service to study the loads, performance and scalability of the service. The service is based on Visual Studio .NET framework. It is developed by using C# as programming language, Internet Information Service (Version: 2005) as web server and, Microsoft Structured Query Language as database server. To study its different aspects the service has been tested by deploying it on Mercury LoadRunner (Version 8.1). In this paper we will present the architecture, testing procedure, results of performance testing as well as results of statistical analysis on recorded data of the service.

Analysis of Factors Influencing Mobile First Strategy in India

In emerging countries such as India, mobile is becoming the primary and possibly the only device for accessing Internet and other information services. In this article, we identify three variables, namely, (a) wireless broadband connectivity (b) affordable smartphones and (c) localised content and applications that drive the value proposition of Mobile First strategy in India. We identify the problems and challenges in all these three dimensions and propose policy prescriptions to overcome the same.

Usability Evaluation Methods for Special Interest Internet Information Services

The internet provides a wide range of scientific information for different areas of research, used by the related scientific communities. Often the design or architecture of these web pages does not correspond to the mental model of their users. As a result the wanted information is difficult to find. Methods established by Usability Engineering and User Experience can help to increase the appeal of scientific internet information services by analyzing the users� requirements. This paper describes a procedure to analyze and optimize scientific internet information services that can be accomplished with relatively low effort. It consists of a combination of methods that already have been successfully applied to practice: Personas, usability inspections, Online Questionnaire, Kano model and Web Analytics.

The Use of Information Sources by Faculty Members of Babol University of Medical Sciences: a Case Study from Iran

Introduction:This study seeks to determine the expertise, use, and satisfaction of faculty members of Babol University of Medical Sciences, using the provided online information services by the university.Methods:This study is descriptive and analytical survey and the information gathering was through the questionnaireand the samples, based on the random of Kerjesi and Morgan Table sample size determination that was selected through stratified sampling proportionately to the size of the departments which summed up to 155 of which 113 responded to the mailed questionnaire.Results:The results of the study show that among the various data sources such as books, journals and internet, faculty members have more undemandingand convenient access to the Internet compared to other resources use, however, half of the information needs of faculty members, 57 (50.4 percent) are provided by the printed books;and the databases available to the University and used by faculty members are PubMed with 76.1% and Science direct with 53.1% and Iranmedex with 46.9%.Only 17% of faculty members have the absolute contentment of the Internet information services,and more than half of the respondents (58.4%) expressed the low speed of Internet service as their major reason for their dissatisfaction of the provided services. Practical implications: Use and Satisfaction of Internet-Based Information Services of Faculty Members.Discussion:Using the Internet to provide the needed information with an index of 46%is a significant issue. The results of the study show that among the various data sources such as books, journals and internet, faculty members have more undemandingand convenient access to the Internet and their access to printed books was really hard and limited, although the internet was more convenient to acquire information, most of the information needs of faculty members are provided by the printed books based on what they expressed. The study showed that the use and acquaintance of the sample of the information databases is very lowand only a few of them have the full satisfaction of the provided Internet information services and the main foremost reason for this major dissatisfaction is the low-speed Internet services at the University.

Principle of Virtual Use Method in Common Gateway Interface Program on the DACS Scheme

In the world of the Internet, Web Servers such as Apache and Internet Information Ser ver (IIS) were developed to exchange information among client computers having different Operation System. They have only the function of displaying static information such as HTML files and image files into the Web Browser. However, when the information i s updated, the administrator updates it by manual operation. In some cases, because it is necessary to update several places about the same information, the work load becomes high than it is assume and update error and update omission may occur. These prob lems were solved by use of a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) program such as a bulletin board system and a Blog system. However, these programs opened to Internet have often no user authentication mechanism and no access control mechanism. That is, they hav e the problem that user can access it freely only by getting the URL and inputting it to a Web Browser. Therefore, in this paper, we show a method to add the user authentication and access control mechanism for them. It is called virtual use method of CGI and is realized in the case of introducing the Destination Addressing Control System (DACS) Scheme, which is a kind of Policy Based Network Management Scheme (PBNM). As the result, this kind of the CGI program can be used in the organization with the abovetwo functions..

Data System of the Finnish Profitability Bookkeeping

MTT Economic research monitors the economy and financial development of agricultural and horticultural enterprises and reindeer farms on the basis of farm level accountancy data. Around 1000 enterprises from all over Finland are voluntarily participating the profitability bookkeeping providing their bookkeeping data to be used as research and statistical material. During the long history since 1912 and especially in recent decades the data system has gone through many technical changes from manual systems to desktop adb-systems and finally to internet based web application. The system development work has also produced many significant innovations. The data of farms has been recorded since 1998 by using dedicated bookkeeping program martti, which is a windows based desktop application. We are now in the process of deploying the existing application to a web application so that the data can be stored online over internet. The recent PowerBuilder versions allow deploying the existing PowerBuilder desktop applications as web applications after making required changes in the application code. PowerBuilder uses the .NET infrastructure to generate the ASP.NET web application. By taking advantage of this feature of PowerBuilder, we have deployed our desktop application martti to the web application. The web application consists of three tier architecture: the front end with the client browser, PowerBuilder components on the Internet Information Services (IIS) server and the back end database to store the data. Web applications have several advantages over traditional client-server applications relating to i.e. installation, application maintenance, dynamic settings and management.The simple PowerBuilder applications work on the internet after deploying without problems, however the complex applications may not work smoothly on the internet. Because of complex architecture of martti application, there are also some challenges and limitations to deploy and use as a web application.

Investigation on performance testing and evaluation of PReWebD: a .NET technique for implementing web application

A prototype research web application based on Visual Studio platform is developed with .NET as framework, Internet Information Server (IIS) (Version: 5.1) as web server and Microsoft Standard Query Language (SQL) Server (Version: 2005) as database server to study the performance and evaluation of the .NET technique used for developing the web application. The authors call it the PReWebD. As the performance is one of the most important features of a web application, to evaluate the performance, testing of PReWebD has been carried out using Mercury LoadRunner (Version 8.0) for validation and to study some other attributes like scalability, reliability etc. The performance depends on parameters such as hits/s, response time, throughput, errors/s etc. These parameters for PReWebD are tested with different stress levels. The statistical testing and analysis is done to assure the stability, reliability and quality of the application. Here the authors report in details the architecture, testing procedure, result of performance testing as well as the results of statistical analysis on recorded data of PReWebD.

Realization of Threats and Countermeasure in Semantic Web Services

Semantic Web services (SWS) are worn by large number of companies as they rendering products and services to customers and business partners throughout the Internet and corporate extranets. The security necessities for these service providers are of supreme importance. Platform-based security services are provided by operating system. Internet Information Services can be used to offer point-to-point business solutions. However message based architecture of SWS is increasingly being used, so new challenges automatically inherited from previous one. All these scenarios require security to be deal with at the message level, transmission level and mutual authentication to carry out cross-platform interoperability and routing through multiple middle level agent nodes. Semantic Web service environment (SWSE) need to implement different level security solutions for including authentication, identification, privacy and data integrity. The threats of network eavesdropping or information disclosure at intermediate application nodes must be addressed if our SWS requests or responses messages convey sensitive application data as credit card numbers, SSN number, employee details, and so on. We will discuss various categories of vulnerabilities and find out causes of threats. Countermeasures will be part of our discussion like Symmetric encryption using shared keys, asymmetric encryption using X.509 certificates, and Digital signature.

An electronic thesaurus of Evidence Based Laboratory Medicine hematological and biochemical diagnostic tests

The adoption of Evidence Based Laboratory Medicine (EBLM) has been hampered until today by the lack of effective tools. The SIMeL EBLM e-Thesaurus (on-line Repertoire of the diagnostic effectiveness of the laboratory, radiology and cardiology test) provides a useful support to clinical laboratory professionals and to clinicians for the interpretation of the diagnostic tests. The e-Thesaurus is an application developed using Microsoft Active Server Pages technology and carried out with Web Server Microsoft Internet Information Server and is available at the SIMeL website using a browser running JavaScript scripts (Internet Explorer is recommended). It contains a database (in Italian, English and Spanish) of the sensitivity and specificity (including the 95% confidence interval), the positive and negative likelihood ratios, the Diagnostic Odds Ratio and the Number Needed to Diagnose of more than 2000 diagnostic (most laboratory but also cardiology and radiology) tests. The e-Thesaurus improves the previous SIMeL paper and CD Thesaurus; its main features are a three languages search and a continuous and an easy updating capability.

A feasible intrusion detector for recognizing IIS attacks based on neural networks

Most activities on the Internet can be recorded as log files of websites and website administrators can inspect log files to locate problems after any network intrusion occurs. However, since log files usually contain a huge quantity of data, without effective methods, it is generally not feasible for administrators to determine the concealed meanings within log files. One method for dealing with this issue is to use neural networks; this is an effective means to distinguish and classify abnormal data in log files, thus alleviating the administrator's burden. This paper presents the results of a study on intrusion detection on IIS (Internet information services) utilizing a hybrid intrusion detection system (IDS). The feasibility of the hybrid IDS is validated based on the Internet scanner system (ISS). In the intrusion detection system proposed, we used four different training data sets: 200, 800, 1400, and 2000. The system is trained either by Taguchi's experimental design or full factorial experimental design under different training data sets; the former can save much more time than the latter. Under Taguchi's experimental design, the best results are obtained when the training data set is of size 1400; overall accuracy in this case is 97.5%. On the contrary, for the full factorial experimental design, the best results are reached when the training data set is of size 2000; overall accuracy is 97.6%. Our study indicates that when to retrain the detector and how much time to allow for this training fully depend on the downgrade percentage of the detection rate, which determines the size of the retraining data set. To reduce the void time for updating the detector, the downgrade percentage should be restricted.

NHS Direct — What challenges has it faced and how have they been overcome?

NHS Direct is a 24-hour, telephone, internet and digital television-based health advice and information service. In the nine years since it took its first call, the service has taken over 40 million calls, received over 60 million visits to the website and now has a digital television presence in over 16 million homes. It has also polarised opinion within the health service, and as the first totally new national service launched since the start of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, from public and professionals, media and politicians and national and international commentators. This paper explores some of the early and ongoing challenges in implementing a major new public service, some of the lessons learnt, and some of the successes and failures along the way.

Application of improved production activity control architecture for shop floor information system in digital manufacturing

Shop floor control (SFC) is responsible for the coordination and control of the manufacturing physical and information flow within the shop floor in the manufacturing system. Weaknesses of the production activity control (PAC) architecture of the shop floor are addressed by the Maglica's new system architecture. This architecture gives rise to unlimited number of movers and producers thus evolving more complex but decentralized architecture. Beijing Institute of Technology - production activity control (BIT-PAC) architecture introduces an idea of sub-producers and sub-movers thus reducing the complexity of the architecture. All the equipments including sub-producers and sub-movers are considered to be passive in the proposed shop floor information system. The dissemination of information from sub-producers and sub-movers is done manually through a PC. Proposed BIT-PAC SFC architecture facilitates the information flow from shop floor to the other area of the organization. Effective use of internet information services (IIS) and SQL2000 is done along with the ASP.NET technology to implement the application logic. Applicability of the software based on BIT-PAC architecture is checked by running application software on a network PC that supports the dynamic flow of information from sub-producers and sub-movers to the other parts of the organization. Use of software is also shown at the end for BIT training workshop thus supporting the use of SFC architecture for similar kind of environments.

ADMiRe: an algebraic data mining approach to system performance analysis

Performance analysis of computing systems is an increasingly difficult task due to growing system complexity. Traditional tools rely on ad hoc procedures. With these, determining which of the manifold system and workload parameters to examine is often a lengthy and highly speculative process. The analysis is often incomplete and, therefore, prone to revealing faulty conclusions and not uncovering useful tuning knowledge. We address this problem by introducing a data mining approach called ADMiRe (analyzer for data mining results). In this scheme, regression analysis is first applied to performance data to discover correlations between various system and workload parameters. The results of this analysis are summarized in sets of regression rules. The user can then formulate intuitive algebraic expressions to manipulate these sets of rules to capture critical information. To demonstrate this approach, we use ADMiRe to analyze an Oracle database system running the TPC-C (Transaction Processing Performance Council) benchmark. The results generated by ADMiRe were confirmed by Oracle experts. We also show that by applying ADMiRe to Microsoft Internet Information Server performance data, we can improve system performance by 20 percent.

Construction and Evaluation of a Cancer Chemotherapy Regimen Database Using an Electronic Medical Chart Network

There are many regimens for cancer chemotherapy, and thus information management is complicated. It is thought that the safe and appropriate use of cancer chemotherapy can be achieved by developing a system that involves information-sharing among medical staff. A system facilitating the choice of regimen was developed in our institution using an electronic medical chart network. In addition, a questionnaire was distributed to evaluate the usefulness of the cancer chemotherapy regimen database (DB). Microsoft Access 2000 was used for the DB. Microsoft Internet Information Services Ver. 6.0 included in the Windows 2003 Server was used as the management software of the Web-version DB. With the Web-version DB, it was possible to offer chemotherapy regimen information to all departments in the hospital. The DB received an excellent evaluation based on the questionnaire results. The reasons for this were the exceptional ability to share information among medical staff and the appeal of a checking system. Obtaining information regarding cancer chemotherapy regimens became easier with the Web-version DB, which received an excellent evaluation by all medical staff. Proactive use of the Web-version DB can contribute to proper cancer chemotherapy choice and strengthening of hospital risk management.

Data manipulation in an XML‐based digital image library

PurposeTo help to clarify the role of XML tools and standards in supporting transition and migration towards a fully XML‐based environment for managing access to information.Design/methodology/approachThe Ching Digital Image Library, built on a three‐tier architecture, is used as a source of examples to illustrate a number of methods of data manipulation for presentation processing. An SQL relational database is implemented in the data tier and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is used to manage processes and sessions in the middle tier. Extensible Markup Language (XML) is used in the data tier to represent offers and in the presentation tiers to represent screen displays that can be manipulated using the XML Document Object Model (DOM), XML Data Islands, and XSL (eXtensible Stylesheet Language), before being delivered to the web browser as HTML.FindingsIt is demonstrated that, although XML itself is not a database, the XML family provides many, though not all, of the components found in databases. XML coupled with a database gives greater power than the sum of the parts in a web application.Originality/valueThis paper is a digital image library case study with practical generic tutorial elements about the role and function of XML in modern database‐backed web sites.

Assessment of industrialists’ information needs and interests in Jordan: A case study of Zarqa Governorate

The study reviews developments of the industrial sector in Jordan. It aims at suggesting a service model that would fit in the industrialists’ needs and requirements in the context of a specialized information centre. It investigated characteristics, information needs, interests, sources and purposes, libraries used and services required by 250 industrialists (164 or 65.6% responded) in 65 medium-sized factories in Zarqa Governorate.Findings revealed that the industrial sector in ZG is male-dominant with 86.6%. Most respondents (85.3%) are young, specialized in industry, engineering, economics, and business. Their information interests are in: Internet, S&T, marketing, IT, business and administration. They use Internet, printed and electronic information sources in academic and public libraries for decision-making, problem solving, developments in industry, administration, consultancy, imports/exports, and marketing purposes.Lack of time, library location, and poor collections are prime hindrances obstructing use of libraries. Adequate specialized collections, loan of library materials, Internet, photocopying, and advanced information services are the most needed from the suggested LIS service.
