Relationship between Difficulty in Emotion Regulation and Internet Addiction in College Students: A One-Year Prospective Study.

This prospective study evaluated the predictive effect of difficulty in emotion regulation on the occurrence and remission of Internet addiction (IA) and determined whether IA has a role in changing emotion regulation among college students during a follow-up period of 1 year. A total of 500 college students (262 women and 238 men) were recruited. In baseline and follow-up investigations, the levels of IA and difficulty in emotion regulation were evaluated using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), respectively. The results indicated that the subscale of impulse control difficulties on the DERS predicted the incidence of IA during the follow-up period of 1 year in male participants (t = −2.875, p = 0.005), whereas no subscale on the DERS predicted the remission of IA. IA did not predict the change in difficulties in emotion regulation. The subscale of impulse control difficulties on the DERS predicted the occurrence of IA in the college students and warrants early intervention.

Direct and Indirect Effects of Neuroticism on Internet Addiction in College Students: A Structure Equation Modeling Analysis.

In the recent decade, increased severity of Internet addiction has been the focus of considerable attention. This research aimed to explore the relationships between neuroticism and Internet addiction. A total of 459 undergraduate students in China participating in this study completed self-report measures of neuroticism, impulsivity, and Internet addiction. The results showed that neuroticism, impulsivity, and Internet addiction were significantly and positively correlated with one other. The structural equation modeling approach indicated that impulsivity, in part, mediated the effect of neuroticism on Internet addiction. An important indirect path from neuroticism to Internet addiction through impulsivity was exposed using the bootstrap method. The outcomes of previous studies were expounded on to define how neuroticism affects Internet addiction.

The effect of negative affect on internet addiction and the mediating effect of fatigue among college students

Objective To explore the effect of negative affect on internet addiction among college students, and the mediating effect of fatigue. Methods Totally 8 371 freshmen from North China University of Science and Technology were assessed with Chen Shuhui Chinese Network Scale, Fatigue Assessment Scale and Positive Negative Emotion Scale.SPSS 23.0 was used to analyze the data and test the intermediary effect. Results Both of the total score of internet addiction scale and the scores of each factor were negatively correlated with positive emotions scores (r=-0.337- -0.269, P<0.01). However, theose were positively correlated with the negative emotion scores(r=0.338-0.417, P<0.01), the fatigue severity scores(r=0.029-0.040, P<0.01), and the environment specific score and the result score of fatigue(r=0.021-0.028, P<0.05). The emotion and fatigue of college students could predict internet addiction, which could explain 36.9% variation of total score of internet addiction(F=979.336, P<0.01). Fatigue played a part in mediating between internet addiction and negative emotions. Conclusion Negative emotions not only directly affect the degree of internet addiction of college students, but also indirectly affect the degree of internet addiction of college students through part of the intermediary role of fatigue. The Infl uence of Stressful Life Events on the Internet Addiction of College Students: The Mediating Role of Subjective Well-being and the Moderating Role of External Locus of Control

Based on the resource conservation theory, this study analyzed the relationships among stressful life events, external locus of control, subjective well-being and internet addiction. There are three hundred and seventy-four college students participated in this survey who come from the universities of Macau, Zhuhai, Nanjing and Shenyang. The research results showed that (1) stressful life events have negative impact on subjective well-being; (2) stressful life events have positive impact on internet addiction; (3) subjective well-being mediates the relationship between stressful life events and internet addiction; (4) external locus of control moderates the relationship between stressful life events and subjective well-being. According to the research results, this study raise the suggestions for college students about how to decrease the negative impact of stressful life events on subjective well-being and how to overcome internet addiction.

Bidirectional relationships of psychiatric symptoms with internet addiction in college students: A prospective study

This prospective study evaluated the predictive ability of psychiatric symptoms at initial consultation for the occurrence and remission of Internet addiction during a 1-year follow-up period among college students. Furthermore, it evaluated the predictive ability of changes in psychiatric symptoms for Internet addiction at the initial consultation during the 1-year follow-up period among college students. Five hundred college students (262 women and 238 men) were recruited. The baseline and follow-up consultations measured the levels of Internet addiction and psychiatric symptoms using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale and Symptom Checklist-90 Revised, respectively. The results indicated that severe interpersonal sensitivity and paranoia symptoms might predict the incidence of Internet addiction at 1-year follow-up. The college students with internet addiction did not have significant improvement in the severities of psychopathology, whereas those without internet addiction had significant improvement in obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, paranoid and psychoticism during the same period. Psychiatric symptoms and Internet addiction exhibited bidirectional relationships in college students during the 1-year follow-up period.

Predictive Effects of Sex, Age, Depression, and Problematic Behaviors on the Incidence and Remission of Internet Addiction in College Students: A Prospective Study.

The aim of the study was to determine the predictive effects of sex, age, depression, and problematic behaviors on the incidence and remission of internet addiction (IA) in college students over a one-year follow-up. A total of 500 college students (262 women and 238 men) were recruited. The predictive effects of sex, age, severity of depression, self-harm/suicidal behaviors, eating problems, risk-taking behaviors, substance use, aggression, and uncontrollable sexual encounters on the incidence and remission of IA over a one-year follow-up were examined. The one-year incidence and remission rates for IA were 7.5% and 46.4%, respectively. Severity of depression, self-harm and suicidal behaviors, and uncontrollable sexual encounters at the initial investigation predicted the incidence of IA in a univariate analysis, whereas only severity of depression predicted the incidence of IA in a multivariable logistic regression (p = 0.015, odds ratio = 1.105, 95% confidence intervals: 1.021–1.196). A relatively young age predicted the remission of IA. Depression and young age predicted the incidence and remission, respectively, of IA in college students in the one-year follow-up.

Prevalence rate of Internet addiction among Japanese college students: Two cross-sectional studies and reconsideration of cut-off points of Young's Internet Addiction Test in Japan.

Due to variation in estimates of the prevalence of Internet addiction (IA) in prior research, we conducted two cross-sectional studies over 2 years investigating the prevalence rate of IA in college students in Japan and reconsidered appropriate cut-off points of a self-rating scale to screen possible IA. This study was composed of two parts: survey I in 2014 and survey II in 2016, which were conducted in the same schools with an interval of 2 years. The study questionnaire included questions about demographics and Internet use, and Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT). Additionally, the subjects in survey II were asked about self-reported IA. There were 1005 respondents in total with a mean age (± SD) of 18.9 ± 1.3 years. The mean IAT scores remained stable between 2014 and 2016: 45.2 ± 12.6 in survey I and 45.5 ± 13.1 in survey II (overall mean IAT score of 45.4 ± 13.0). With respect to self-reported IA in survey II, a total of 21.6% admitted to having IA (score of 5 or 6 on a 6-point Likert scale). We categorized these subjects as IA, and the remainder as non-IA. The mean IAT score showed a significant difference between these two groups (57.8 ± 14.3 vs 42.1 ± 10.7, P < 0.001). The severity of IA symptoms among Japanese college students has appeared stable in recent years, with mean IAT scores of over 40. Our results suggest that a screening score cut-off of 40 on the IAT could be reconsidered and that 50 might be proposed for the cut-off.

On the relationship between usefulness &amp; ease of use of it appliances and internet addiction

The central purpose of this research was to identify the relationship between the usefulness of IT appliances and internet addiction of college students. The research subjects consisted of a group of 156 students attending at N University located in Chonan, Choongnam Province. To investigate the issue under discussion, the current research utilized a scale of the usefulness of the use of IT equipment and a scale for internet addiction. Moreover, the following statistical analysis methods were employed for analysis of collected data: descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis and correlation analysis. As a result, It was found that the difference in the mean between the usefulness (3.4205) and internet addiction (3.1963) was 0.2242. Of the group of four subfactors of internet addiction, the mean of virtual world-orientedness was the highest at 3.8429, whereas positive expectation was the lowest at 2.2692. A correlation analysis also found that there is no correlation between the two variables of the usefulness of IT appliances and internet addiction (and any of the four subfactors as well). Future researches are expected to produce insightful findings that would help college students make a better use IT appliances to let them grow as individuals and members of society as well.

Internet Addiction of College Students from the Psychological Perspective

With the rapid development of network, the phenomenon of Internet addiction is prevalent on campuses, which has produced a variety of negative effects on college students in terms of learning, living, working and so on. In recent years, there are many research literatures on Internet addiction overseas, covering all aspects of this psychological phenomenon. Moreover, domestic research on Internet addiction started late. In the light of the fact that college students do not have clear understanding on hazards of Internet addiction, it generally shows their selfcontrol is poor. They do not believe they can control their behavior and results and give up taking responsibility for the results and tend to agree network identity. Based on this phenomenon, we propose the network psychological source control concept. In view of the close contact between the excessive use of the network and the individual time management, this study selected the time dimension of personality characteristics on Internet addiction as another influencing factor, and explored the integrated influence of the psychological source control to Internet addiction.

Mediation Effects of Internet Addiction on Shame and Social Networking

A survey of 488 college students was conducted in Turkey to investigate the relationship between social network usage, shame and Internet addiction. It was hypothesized that a relationship between shame and social network usage was mediated by Internet addiction. First of all, according to simple regression analysis, it was found that shame significantly and positively predicted social network usage. A simple mediation model, which was applied with regression-based mediation analysis, showed that shame did not predict social network usage when Internet addiction was inserted in the model. Therefore, Internet addiction is a mediating variable between shame and social network usage. According to the results of mediation analysis, Internet addiction of college students is an important predictor in terms of social networking site (SNS) usage.

Association of stress coping strategies with Internet addiction in college students: The moderating effect of depression

BackgroundThis study examined the association between stress-related coping strategies and Internet addiction and the moderating effect of depression in a sample of Taiwanese college students. MethodA total of 500 college students (238 men and 262 women) participated in this study. Internet addiction was assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale. Participants’ stress coping strategies and depressive symptoms were measured using the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced and the Beck Depression Inventory-II, respectively. We used t and chi-square tests to examine differences in demographic characteristics, depression, and stress coping strategies between participants with and without Internet addiction. Significant variables were used in a logistic regression model to examine the association between stress coping strategies and Internet addiction and the moderating effect of depression on the association. ResultsResults indicated that use of restraint coping was negatively associated with Internet addiction (odds ratio [OR]=0.886, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.802–0.977), whereas denial (OR=1.177, 95% CI: 1.029–1.346) and mental disengagement (OR=2.673, 95% CI: 1.499–4.767) were positively associated with Internet addiction. Depression had a moderating effect on the association between denial and Internet addiction (OR=0.701, 95% CI: 0.530–0.927). ConclusionsStress coping strategies and depression are important factors to evaluate when developing intervention programs targeting college undergraduate students with Internet addiction.

Proposed diagnostic criteria and the screening and diagnosing tool of Internet addiction in college students

The aims of this study were to develop diagnostic criteria of Internet addiction for college students (DC-IA-C) with diagnostic interviews and to establish the optimal cutoff points of the Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS) for the purposes of screening for and making the diagnosis of Internet addiction. A total of 216 college students (132 male and 84 female) were recruited in the study. The results demonstrated that 5/6 cutoff points of criteria A in DC-IA-C had the best diagnostic accuracy (95.9%). Besides, 63/64 and 67/68 cutoff points of the CIAS were evaluated to be the best screening and diagnostic cutoff points, respectively. The DC-IA-C can provide health care professionals with a means to diagnose and communicate about Internet addiction among college students, and the screening and diagnostic cutoff points of CIAS could provide a screening instrument or a discriminative instrument in surveys for Internet addiction among college students.
