Using contextual factors to predict information security overconfidence: A machine learning approach

Despite increasing investments in workforce security education and training, many organizations still face the challenge that their employees overestimate their knowledge and abilities to prevent security incidents. Since these misperceptions regarding one's competencies may entail serious consequences for business, the present paper investigates contextual influences on overconfidence susceptibility. For this purpose, we first surveyed more than 5,500 employees of an international pharmaceutical company and then applied machine learning techniques to classify them according to their likelihood of exhibiting overconfidence. Results demonstrate the significance of factors like training commitment, salary band, team size, and job experience are helping managers to adjust and improve awareness measures.

Industrializing AI-powered drug discovery: lessons learned from the Patrimony computing platform

ABSTRACT Introduction As a mid-size international pharmaceutical company, we initiated 4 years ago the launch of a dedicated high-throughput computing platform supporting drug discovery. The platform named ‘Patrimony’ was built up on the initial predicate to capitalize on our proprietary data while leveraging public data sources in order to foster a Computational Precision Medicine approach with the power of artificial intelligence. Areas covered Specifically, Patrimony is designed to identify novel therapeutic target candidates. With several successful use cases in immuno-inflammatory diseases, and current ongoing extension to applications to oncology and neurology, we document how this industrial computational platform has had a transformational impact on our R&D, making it more competitive, as well time and cost effective through a model-based educated selection of therapeutic targets and drug candidates. Expert opinion We report our achievements, but also our challenges in implementing data access and governance processes, building up hardware and user interfaces, and acculturing scientists to use predictive models to inform decisions.

Analysis of the 2020 crisis and its consequences in the Kaluga region

The end of 2019 will be remembered for the discovery of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19, which has become a major challenge for all of humanity. The ongoing pandemic has provoked a crisis in all spheres of life and is continuously changing the global economic, political, social and other processes, forcing us to adapt to the introduced precautions. Using a logical and systematic approach to research, applying methods of synthesis and content analysis of the press, electronic media and communication, as well as scientific articles, the authors analyzed the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection pandemic on the economic state of the Kaluga Region. The main socio-economic indicators are considered in dynamics and the most important spheres of the region's economy are analyzed in more detail. Assumptions have been made about how the restrictive measures designed to reduce the growth of cases affected the life-supporting processes of the region. The migration processes of the population were considered, and the change in the standard of living was assessed. How the coronavirus has affected the health sector is reflected. It has been analyzed whether the forecast of industrial production can be realized taking into account the current conditions. Taking into account the fact that a cluster model of development is being implemented in the region, the current indicators of the two leading directions: pharmaceutical and automotive, and their possibilities for the restoration of the regional economy with their help are reviewed. It was revealed that in the local Kaluga production of a large international pharmaceutical company, it is possible to implement part of the research to create a vaccine against coronavirus infection COVID-19. Based on the data processed in this article, it can be concluded that the diversification of the regional economy, which the regional administration adheres to, is bearing fruit in the current force majeure conditions. And the clustering of industry and preferential terms of permission for investors in such times have become especially relevant.

Testing three assumptions of talent management about the motivation to quit in Lima, Peru

Recent scholarly claims suggest that talent management (TM) needs to move beyond assumptions and that TM research should address contextual factors. This study evaluated three assumptions of the TM literature entailing the intention to quit in a national context at the margins of Western culture. The salesforce of an international pharmaceutical company in Lima, Peru responded questions on the intention to quit and the Short Form of the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire; then the data were analyzed comparing employees in vis-à-vis out of its elitist talent pool. Talented employees presented weaker quit intentions. This finding is consistent with theory and wide international evidence, as well as with a recent twist in the TM literature, and suggests that a fundamental TM relationship transcends national contexts. The other findings contradicted extended beliefs among TM theoreticians and practitioners, who expect a dominance of intrinsic vis-à-vis extrinsic satisfaction and an absence of gender differences in the turnover dynamics. Further research is required to establish whether these findings are specific to the Peruvian context or are robust and valid elsewhere, too.

A New Potent NS5A Inhibitor in the Management of Hepatitis C Virus: Ravidasvir.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a worldwide health problem that can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cell failure and numerous subsequent complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Till the near past, pegylated interferon was the standard of care therapy. However, it was associated with suboptimal success rates and many side effects. Thereafter, direct antiviral agents (DAA) appeared and played the key role in management of HCV. One of those recent DAAs is ravidasvir. It is a potent NS5A inhibitor that was formerly known as PPI-668. It is produced by the cooperation of Presidio pharmaceuticals and Pharco International pharmaceutical company. Since its first production, it has been enrolled in different successive clinical trials. Phase 1 and 2 trials confirmed its safety and tolerability and its great efficacy in suppressing viral loads in short periods. It has a pangenotypic activity with favorable pharmacokinetic properties. Ravidasvir inhibits the replication of HCV variants that develop resistance mutations for different DAA classes. Even more, HCV variants that had reduced susceptibility to ravidasvir are completely susceptible to other DAA. Finally, a large multicenteric registrational phase 3 clinical trial that included large percentages of difficult to treat patients (such as cirrhotic and interferon experienced patients) has been fully accomplished and proved great SVR12 rates. Ravidasvir is a potent new NS5A inhibitor with excellent safety and tolerability in management of genotype 4 HCV patients.

Performance Measurement in the Pharmaceutical Industry: Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Ltd.

This paper reports on the development of a new performance management system at a major pharmaceutical company known as Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (DRL). DRL is an international pharmaceutical company that has a commercial presence in 30 countries with headquarters in Hyderabad, India. The performance management system known as the Eight Pillars of sustainable operations goes beyond the typical performance measurement systems implemented by other pharmaceutical companies, in that it incorporates both environmental measures and corporate sustainability measures. These measures are described and the uniqueness of the system is discussed both in terms of operational performance and corporate social responsibility. The case study reported in this paper was conducted with major commitment from senior management and is based on data from the company's annual reports as well as interviews conducted with senior managers at different levels in the organization. The initiation and implementation of the system is highlighted along with the challenges encountered and the lessons learned. Finally, the utility of the system is examined both within the organization and external to the organization. Recent awards received by the CEO are described to note evidence of external validation of the system.

Corporate social responsibility: the organizational view

Designing strategies for corporate social responsibility (CSR)-practice nowadays has become essential for organizations. Notwithstanding, how organizations appear internally in a socially responsible context toward their employees has been insufficiently investigated. This study aims at ascertaining how Internal CSR can be conceptualized as well as how it affects employees’ commitment. To do so, the manifestations of Internal CSR are discussed based on social identity theory and further literature, while the developed research model is checked for suitability through a survey generating 2081 employee responses from an international pharmaceutical company. As one result, it can be stated that the factors proposed to constitute Internal CSR are confirmed. Further, the findings entail the following conclusions: Internal CSR has a notable influence on employees’ Affective Organizational Commitment whilst relatively moderate impacting Normative Organizational Commitment. Additionally, Affective Organizational Commitment adopts a mediating function regarding Normative Organizational Commitment.

Factors of internal corporate social responsibility and the effect on organizational commitment

Internal corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become an essential part of organizations' social responsibility. Yet, to date, CSR's internal dimension has been widely neglected in the literature. This paper empirically explores the concept of internal CSR and its relationship to employees' affective and normative organizational commitment. For conceptualizing internal CSR, seven factors are theoretically derived based on social exchange theory. The research model is initially tested through a pre-test consisting of 386 respondents from a German company active in the renewable energy sector. The main survey is carried out in an international pharmaceutical company, resulting in 2081 employee responses. The results reveal that the relevant factors constituting internal CSR are present and that the latter has a strong effect on employees' affective organizational commitment and a comparatively low effect on normative organizational commitment. Furthermore, a mediating role of affective on normative organizational commitment is detected.

Silenced uses and moral ideals in the exchange of Danish blood and plasma

This article explores the interplay between cultural discourses, moral reasoning and silenced uses in the international exchange of Danish blood plasma. Campaigns, policymakers, health professionals working in the blood banks – and even donors – consistently refer to ideals portraying blood as ‘beyond trade’. This stands in remarkable contrast to the fact that the donated plasma is sold to an international pharmaceutical company in consequence of rules of tender set by the European Union. Donors are not aware of this, and when asked in hypothetical terms about trade, they strongly oppose it. However, we find that available cultural discourses poorly capture the moral reasoning among many donors. In fact, when informed about the existing forms of tender, plasma trade sounds like a good idea to most of them. Furthermore, they are not particularly interested in information. We argue that the silencing of trade is infusing the system with an unnecessary vulnerability that could easily be avoided with a different communication strategy towards donors. To arrive at new and better strategies, however, one must move beyond the immediate words and reactions of donors contemplating trade and seek to understand their reasoning and valuations. This move also allows us theoretical reorientation with respect to studies of the gift/commodity dichotomy.

Manufacturing capability networks: A case study on production allocation decision in the pharmaceutical industry

This study aims to identify and understand the key factors that need to be considered when deciding production allocation in the pharmaceutical industry as well as to develop a managerial framework to guide the location decision in the same industry. A total of ten case studies have been performed in an international pharmaceutical company based in Singapore over an 8-month period. The case studies revealed that production allocation decisions are largely driven by the desire to maximize benefits through the exploitation as well as the development of manufacturing capabilities at both the plant and network level. The study also identified and detailed the influence of legislation requirements, market, and product specifications on these decisions. It was observed that the degree of influence varies from case to case, resulting in two categories of decision criteria: qualifying (i.e. must meet) and ranking (differentiation) criteria. A framework is created to aid managers to decide the best location, maximizing the overall manufacturing network as well as the single plant capabilities.

Proposing a case study on tacit knowledge transfer within a pharmaceutical company

AbstractApplying the principles of knowledge organization originating from library and information science, the purpose of the study is to explore how knowledge organization assists employees to share and store their tacit knowledge. An international pharmaceutical company in Taiwan, JavaMed (pseudonym), will be the case for this study. In‐depth interviews will be used to uncover how employee training and knowledge transfer in JavaMed are carried out. Furthermore, the study will examine the role of knowledge organization, such as knowledge map, knowledge base, and yellow page, in facilitating knowledge transfer and achieving the goal of knowledge management. The main contribution of this study will be to identify the interrelationship among knowledge transfer, knowledge organization, and human resource management. The proposed study applies the concepts originated from library and information science to the area of business management. The researchers expect that the interdisciplinary nature of the study will shed light on both fields.

The effects of integrating management judgement into intermittent demand forecasts

Empirical research suggests that quantitatively derived forecasts are very frequently judgementally adjusted. Nevertheless, little work has been conducted to evaluate the performance of these judgemental adjustments in a practical demand/sales context. In addition, the relevant analysis does not distinguish between slow and fast moving items. Currently, there are neither conceptual developments nor empirical evidence on the issue of integrating judgements and statistical forecasts for slow/intermittent demand items. Moreover, no results have ever been reported on the stock control implications of these human judgements. Our work analyses monthly intermittent demand forecasts for the UK branch of a major international pharmaceutical company. The company relies upon a commercially available statistical forecasting system to produce forecasts that are subsequently judgementally adjusted based on marketing intelligence gathered by the company forecasters. The benefits of the intervention are evaluated by comparing the actual sales to system and final forecasts using both forecast accuracy and inventory control (accuracy implication) metrics. Our study allows insights to be gained on potential improvements to intermittent demand forecasting processes and, subsequently, the design effectiveness of forecasting support systems.

Critical Role of Leadership on Ethical Climate and Salesperson Behaviors

Leaders play a critical role in setting the tone for ethical climate in organizations. In recent years, there has been an increased skepticism about the role played by corporate executives in developing and implementing ethics in business practices. Sales and marketing practices of businesses, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, have come under increased scrutiny. This study identifies a type of leadership style that can help firms develop an ethical climate. Responses from 333 salespeople working for a North American subsidiary of an international pharmaceutical company were used to analyze the impact of instrumental leadership on ethical climate. We also examined the effect of ethical climate on effort, satisfaction with the supervisor, and job satisfaction. Managerial implications are provided.

PurposeThe paper seeks to describe the information provision issues facing an international pharmaceutical company, in particular in relation to document supply.Design/methodology/approachThe document supply service of a major international pharmaceutical company is described, together with recent service enhancements.FindingsDocument supply has not declined as much as demand for copies for the company's collections. Automation has played a significant role in reducing costs and improving speed, and a number of other improvements are identified.Originality/valueA useful insight into the document supply issues facing a commercial information provision service, especially in the field of copyright.

WHY DO COMPANIES NOT PRODUCE BETTER FORECASTS OVERTIME? AN ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING APPROACH

This paper considers the forecasting practice of a U.K. branch of a major international pharmaceutical company. The company uses a Forecasting Support System to prepare system forecasts, which are later ‘judgmentally’ adjusted to produce a set of final forecasts. Although it is anticipated that as the company gains experience and becomes familiar with its product, its ability to forecast at the stock keeping unit level will improve, an analysis of forecasts for 136 products over a 24-month period shows that this is not the case. This present study speculates as to the possible reasons behind what is ostensibly a failure to learn and draws on key concepts from organisational learning in an attempt to explain what may be happening.

What Is Missing on Their Web Sites? An Evaluation of National and International Pharmaceutical Companies in Turkey

The Turkish Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association-Ilaç Endüstrisi Isverenler Sendikasi (IEIS) set guidelines for pharmaceutical companies when designing their websites in 2003. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether pharmaceutical company websites comply with these guidelines. The list of all the national and international pharmaceutical companies active in Turkey is obtained from Farmalist Vademecum. We evaluated each site in terms of availability of drug advertisement, mail address, e-mail address, telephone number, fax number, update information, indication of target group, links, references, information, appropriate content for the intended target group, disclaimer stating the given information is only for health care professionals, disclaimer stating the given information cannot replace a health care professional, responsible body for the website design. The search was done throughout February 2005. We used x(2) test and Fisher's exact x(2) tests for statistical analysis. Of the 82 pharmaceutical companies active in Turkey, 51 had a website eligible for evaluation. Of the 51 companies, 34 (66.7%) were national and 17 (33.3%) were international. Eighteen companies had drug advertisement on the home page of their websites (64.7%). Of the total companies majority had mail address (89.2%); telephone number (89.2%); fax number (84.3%); links (66.7%); and appropriate content for the health care professionals (62.7%). The frequency of having update information and a separate pharmacist/physician information part was higher among international pharmaceutical company websites compared to the national ones. These differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). As a result of the evaluation, the majority of the pharmaceutical companies failed to comply wholly with the guidelines set by IEIS when designing their website on the Internet.
