Pesticide residues in boreal arable soils: Countrywide study of occurrence and risks

Large volumes of pesticides are applied every year to support agricultural production. The intensive use of pesticides affects soil quality and health, but soil surveys on pesticide residues are scarce, especially for northern Europe. We investigated the occurrence of 198 pesticide residues, including both banned and currently used substances in 148 field sites in Finland. Results highlight that pesticide residues are common in the agricultural soils of Finland. A least one residue was found in 82% of the soils, and of those 32% contained five or more residues. Maximum total residue concentration among the conventionally farmed soils was 3043 μg/kg, of which AMPA and glyphosate contributed the most. Pesticide residues were also found from organically farmed soils, although at 75–90% lower concentrations than in the conventionally farmed fields. Thus, despite the application rates of pesticides in Finland being generally much lower than in most parts of central and southern Europe, the total residue concentrations in the soils occurred at similar or at higher levels. We also established that AMPA and glyphosate residues in soil are significantly higher in fields with cereal dominated rotations than in grass dominated or cereal–grass rotations. However, risk analyses for individual substances indicated low ecological risk for most of the fields. Furthermore, the total ecological risk associated with the mixtures of residues was mostly low except for 21% of cereal dominated fields with medium risk. The results showed that the presence of mixtures of pesticide residues in soils is a rule rather than an exception also in boreal soils. In highly chemicalized modern agriculture, the follow-up of the residues of currently used pesticides in national and international soil monitoring programs is imperative to maintain soil quality and support sustainable environment policies.

Potential range shift of a long-distance migratory rice pest, Nilaparvata lugens, under climate change

The biogeographical range shift of insect pests is primarily governed by temperature. However, the range shift of seasonal long-distance migratory insects may be very different from that of sedentary insects. Nilaparvata lugens (BPH), a serious rice pest, can only overwinter in tropical-to-subtropical regions, and some populations migrate seasonally to temperate zones with the aid of low-level jet stream air currents. This study utilized the CLIMEX model to project the overwintering area under the climate change scenarios of RCP2.6 and RCP8.5, both in 2030s and 2080s. The overwintering boundary is predicted to expand poleward and new overwintering areas are predicted in the mid-latitude regions of central-to-eastern China and mid-to-southern Australia. With climate change, the habitable areas remained similar, but suitability decreased substantially, especially in the near-equatorial regions, owing to increasing heat stress. The range shift is similar between RCP2.6-2030s, RCP2.6-2080s, and RCP8.5-2030s, but extreme changes are projected under RCP8.5-2080s with marginal areas increasing from 27.2 to 38.8% and very favorable areas dropping from 27.5 to 3.6% compared to the current climate. These findings indicate that climate change will drive range shifts in BPH and alter regional risks differently. Therefore, international monitoring programs are needed to effectively manage these emerging challenges.

PollinERA: Understanding pesticide-Pollinator interactions to support EU Environmental Risk Assessment and policy

PollinERA aims to reverse pollinator population declines and reduce the harmful impacts of pesticides. It addresses the call through four objectives: SO1 filling ecotoxicological data gaps to enable realistic prediction of the source and routes of exposure and impact of pesticides on pollinators and their sensitivity to individual pesticides and mixtures. SO2 developing and testing a co-monitoring scheme for pesticides and pollinators across European cropping systems and landscapes, developing risk indicators and mixture exposure information. SO3 developing models for predicting pesticide toxicological effects on pollinators for chemicals and organisms, environmental fate, toxicokinetic/ toxicodynamic, and population models. SO4 developing a population-level systems-based approach to risk and policy assessment considering multiple stressors and long-term spatiotemporal dynamics at the landscape scale and generating an open database for pollinator/pesticide data and tools. This will be achieved through developing knowledge and protocols for a broad range of toxicological testing, feeding to in silico models (QSARS, toxicokinetic/toxicodynamic, and population). Using a strong stakeholder co-development approach, these models will be combined in a One System framework taking a systems view on risk assessment and policy evaluation, including an international monitoring program. The One System framework is based on EFSA’s system ERA view, expanding on the tools used for bees to include butterflies, moths and hoverflies. The consortium partners are experts in the field needed for this development and are well-placed to facilitate the uptake of tools by European bodies to guarantee the project's future impact. Expected impacts target Destination impacts of better understanding and addressing drivers of biodiversity decline, interconnected biodiversity research using digital technologies, and understanding the biodiversity and health nexus at the ecosystem level.

Spatial distribution of selenium-mercury in Arctic seabirds

Mercury (Hg) is a metallic trace element toxic for humans and wildlife that can originate from natural and anthropic sources. Hg spatial gradients have been found in seabirds from the Arctic and other oceans, suggesting contrasting toxicity risks across regions. Selenium (Se) plays a protective role against Hg toxicity, but its spatial distribution has been much less investigated than that of Hg. From 2015 to 2017, we measured spatial co-exposure of Hg and Se in blood samples of two seabird species, the Brünnich's guillemot (Uria lomvia) and the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) from 17 colonies in the Arctic and subarctic regions, and we calculated their molar ratios (Se:Hg), as a measure of Hg sequestration by Se and, therefore, of Hg exposure risk. We also evaluated concentration differences between species and ocean basins (Pacific-Arctic and Atlantic-Arctic), and examined the influence of trophic ecology on Hg and Se concentrations using nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes. In the Atlantic-Arctic ocean, we found a negative west-to-east gradient of Hg and Se for guillemots, and a positive west-to-east gradient of Se for kittiwakes, suggesting that these species are better protected from Hg toxicity in the European Arctic. Differences in Se gradients between species suggest that they do not follow environmental Se spatial variations. This, together with the absence of a general pattern for isotopes influence on trace element concentrations, could be due to foraging ecology differences between species. In both oceans, the two species showed similar Hg concentrations, but guillemots showed lower Se concentrations and Se:Hg than kittiwakes, suggesting a higher Hg toxicity risk in guillemots. Within species, neither Hg, nor Se or Se:Hg differed between both oceans. Our study highlights the importance of considering Se together with Hg, along with different species and regions, when evaluating Hg toxic effects on marine predators in international monitoring programs.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Commensal Escherichia coli of the Porcine Gastrointestinal Tract.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli of animal origin presents a threat to human health. Although animals are not the primary source of human infections, humans may be exposed to AMR E. coli of animal origin and their AMR genes through the food chain, direct contact with animals, and via the environment. For this reason, AMR in E. coli from food producing animals is included in most national and international AMR monitoring programmes and is the subject of a large body of research. As pig farming is one of the largest livestock sectors and the one with the highest antimicrobial use, there is considerable interest in the epidemiology of AMR in E. coli of porcine origin. This literature review presents an overview and appraisal of current knowledge of AMR in commensal E. coli of the porcine gastrointestinal tract with a focus on its evolution during the pig lifecycle and the relationship with antimicrobial use. It also presents an overview of the epidemiology of resistance to extended spectrum cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and colistin in pig production. The review highlights the widespread nature of AMR in the porcine commensal E. coli population, especially to the most-used classes in pig farming and discusses the complex interplay between age and antimicrobial use during the pig lifecycle.

Efficiency of five samplers to trap suspended particulate matter and microplastic particles of different sizes

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) plays a major role in nutrient cycles and for the transport of pollutants within local and transboundary water catchments. Obtaining representative SPM samples from rivers, lakes, inland and coastal waters is crucial for quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses to correctly describe the chemical status of a water body. However, a representative sampling of SPM over time is challenging due to the heterogeneity of SPM particles sizes, their non-uniform distribution in rivers, and a variety of sampling devices being in use. Therefore, we investigated the efficiencies of five different sampling devices commonly used in national and international monitoring programs to collect representative SPM samples. We tested three passive sedimentation-based samplers (SBSs: sedimentation box, SB; sedimentation tank, ST; Raetz Sampler, RS), and two active separation techniques (continuous flow centrifuge, CFC; vacuum filtration, VF) in an experimental laboratory setup using in-house SPM standard suspensions (mineral, organic, and microplastic particles) with defined particle sizes. The mass-based efficiencies of the three examined SBSs were 0–66% for the mineral and organic particles <75 μm, where the mean particle sizes of collected samples were always shifted to bigger sizes compared to the initial suspensions. The efficiencies of the three SBSs to collect microplastic particles <80 μm were <20% due to the lower densities of microplastic compared to organic and mineral particles. In contrast to the SBSs, VF and CFC units showed excellent efficiencies >86% for all tested materials, with similar particle size distributions of the sampled material compared to those of the inlet suspensions. In conclusion, SPM sampling efficiencies of sampling units have to be carefully considered and compared to the respective aims of the monitoring approaches, especially when statements are derived from quantitative results on SPM.

Biomarkers for pollution in caged mussels from three reservoirs in Bulgaria: A pilot study

The mussel-watch concept was firstly proposed in 1975, which was later adopted by several international monitoring programs worldwide. However, for the very first time, a field experiment with caged mussels was performed in three reservoirs in Bulgaria to follow the harmful effects of sub-chronic pollution (30 days) of metals, trace, and macro-elements, as well as some organic toxicants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers and chlorinated paraffins. Therefore, we studied the biometric indices, histochemical lesions in the gills, biochemical changes in the digestive glands (antioxidant defense enzymes, such as catalase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase; metabolic enzymes, such as lactate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase, and the neurotransmitter cholinesterase), in addition to the DNA damage in the Chinese pond mussel, Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) in Kardzhali, Studen Kladenets and Zhrebchevo reservoirs in Bulgaria. Significant correlation trends between the pollution levels, which we reported before, and the biomarker responses were established in the current paper. Overall, we found that both tested organs were susceptible to pollution-induced oxidative stress. The different alterations in the selected biomarkers in the caged mussels compared to the reference group were linked to the different kinds and levels of water pollution in the reservoirs, and also to the simultaneously conducted bioaccumulation studies.

Interannual Variation in Phytoplankton Community Driven by Environmental Factors in the Northern East China Sea

The relative importance of interannual environmental changes in shaping phytoplankton community structure remains unclear in the East China Sea (ECS), which is the largest marginal sea in the western North Pacific Ocean. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of a variety of photosynthetic pigments, we investigated spatiotemporal variations in the phytoplankton community in the northern East China Sea (NECS) from 2018 to 2020 to understand biomass and compositional responses to environmental conditions in a complex current system. Correlation heatmaps and generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to explore the variations in major phytoplankton groups and their relationships to temperature, salinity, depth, and nutrients. The results indicated that the phytoplankton community structure was significantly different between 2018/2019 and 2020. Under the conditions of high dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and low dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP) concentrations in winter 2020, cryptophytes replaced diatoms as the dominant species and were observed for the first time in this study area. Dinoflagellates predominated throughout the euphotic zone in spring 2020, and statistical analysis showed that dinoflagellates tended to prevail at low DIP and high DIN conditions compared with diatoms. Summer was the only season with strong water stratification that reoccurred every year, and diatoms were mainly concentrated at nutrient-enriched 1% light depths in the summers of 2018/2019. However, a large amount of Changjiang River Diluted Water (CDW) from the surface and western part of the study area affected all sampling sites eastward to 126°E in 2020, allowing diatoms to be dominant at 100% and 30% light depths in the westernmost stations in the NECS. In autumn 2020, diatoms decreased significantly because of DIP-limited environmental conditions and were replaced by small phytoplankton. Under expected warming ocean scenarios with human-induced nutrient inputs, small phytoplankton will become dominant, while spring dinoflagellate blooms will occur more frequently in the NECS. International monitoring programs for marine ecosystems are currently needed in the ECS.

Advances in understanding of the natural history, mechanism, extra‐muscular manifestations and treatment of GNE myopathy

AbstractGNE myopathy is an autosomal recessive adult‐onset distal myopathy caused by biallelic variants in the GNE gene, which encodes a protein with two key enzymatic activities in the biosynthesis of sialic acid. In 1981, there was a report of a Japanese family in which muscle biopsies showed rimmed vacuoles in tibialis anterior with relative sparing of the quadriceps muscles. Twenty years later, the causative gene was identified to be GNE. Our group has constructed a mouse model that recapitulates the symptoms of GNE myopathy in patients and demonstrates the therapeutic effects of oral sialic acid supplementation on muscle phenotypes. The first clinical trial of N‐acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) was conducted in 2010 at Tohoku University, and several clinical trials are now underway at multiple sites. Patient registries have also been started, including the Japanese Registry of Muscular Dystrophy (Remudy, established in 2012) and the online international GNE Myopathy Disease Monitoring Program (launched in 2014). These registries have allowed collection of comprehensive patient data, including new clinical features suggesting that GNE myopathy is not only a disease of skeletal muscle. In this review, we summarize the history of research on GNE myopathy and discuss the mechanism of the disease and its more recently identified features.

Distribution, diet and relationships of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi with anchovies and zooplankton, in the northeastern Adriatic Sea

Blooms of invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi can have massive consequences on fish stocks and marine food webs. The distribution, abundance and diet of this ctenophore were investigated in the northeastern (NE) Adriatic between 2016 and 2019. The abundance of M. leidyi was determined daily along the coast of Rovinj (Croatia), and its spatial distribution monitored by visual census from research vessels and by pelagic trawl during acoustic surveys in September of each year. Mesozooplankton samples were collected along the western coast of Istria by vertical tows from the bottom to the surface. Spatial distribution and abundance of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) assemblages were determined by geo-referenced hydro-acoustic sampling using a scientific echosounder. Large swarms of M. leidyi covering several km2 were regularly reported between July and November extending up to 25 NM from the western coast of the Istrian peninsula and reaching maximum offshore densities of 270 individuals per m2. The abundance of anchovy in the areas where M. leidyi was present evidently decreased. The content of M. leidyi’s digestive tract and plankton samples consisted both mainly of cladocerans, copepods, pteropods, echinodermata and bivalvia larvae. Results indicate that M. leidyi may accumulate and increase its abundance in the stagnant and trophically rich areas of the northern Adriatic gyres, spreading to the surrounding larger areas with currents. We assume that M. leidyi presence correlates with a decrease in anchovy population due to competition for food (zooplankton). Our findings support the importance of implementing an international monitoring program throughout the Adriatic Sea and demonstrate the ability of current MEDIAS surveys to detect changes in the pelagic ecosystem throughout surveyed areas.

A design-based assessment of an expanded set of auxiliary information for forest growth estimation

To improve the design-based precision of gross increment estimates from forest inventories, we propose an assessment of an expanded set of auxiliary information grouped from five sources: (i) a vegetation height model, (ii) satellite imagery, (iii) spatial data, (iv) topography, and (v) variables identified by external forest monitoring and research networks. The former two are from optical remote sensing and the latter three are chosen on the basis of interpretable and proven connections with forest growth. We evaluate each source individually and collectively for the Swiss National Forest Inventory using two-phase estimation with the elastic net method. In terms of relative efficiency, all individual groups demonstrated improvement over one-phase estimation by 7% to 29% with the interpretable sources consistently outperforming those based on optical remote sensing. However, the interpretable sources do not provide significant additional gains when combined together, whereas the optical remote sensing consistently and substantially supports other sources of auxiliary data when combined, leading to a 50% to 71% improvement overall. Given the availability of data, such as that from international monitoring programs, expanding the set of auxiliaries to include both interpretable sources and optical remote sensing is a feasible and promising option for national forest inventories.

Watervogels - Wintering waterbirds in Flanders, Belgium.

"Watervogels – Wintering waterbirds in Flanders, Belgium" is a sampling event dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO). It contains more than 94,000 sampling events (site counts), covering over 710,000 species observations (and zero counts when there is no associated occurrence) and 36 million individual birds for the period 1991–2016. The dataset includes information on 167 different species in nearly 1,100 wetland sites. The aim of these bird counts is to gather information on the size, distribution, and long-term trends of wintering waterbird populations in Flanders. These data are also used to assess the importance of individual sites for waterbirds, using quantitative criteria. Furthermore, the waterbird counts contribute to international monitoring programs, such as the International Waterbird Census (coordinated by Wetlands International) and fulfil some of the objectives of the European Bird Directive, the Ramsar Convention, and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA). Here the dataset is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each event: a stable event ID, date and location of observation and a short description of the sampling protocol, effort and conditions (in the event core), supplemented with specific information for each occurrence: a stable occurrence ID, the scientific name and higher classification of the observed species, the number of recorded individuals, and a reference to the observer of the record (in the occurrence extension). Inhomogeneity detection in phytoplankton time series using multivariate analyses

Phytoplankton communities have long been used as water quality indicators within environmental policies. This has fostered the development of national and international phytoplankton monitoring programs, but these networks are subject to sources of uncertainty due to laboratory issues. Nevertheless, studies regarding the interference associated with these aspects are not well-documented. Hence, a long time series (2003–2015) from the Basque continental shelf (southeastern Bay of Biscay) was analyzed to evaluate the uncertainty given by laboratory strategies when studying phytoplankton variability. Variability in phytoplankton communities was explained not only by environmental conditions but also by changes in fixatives (glutaraldehyde and acidic Lugol's solution) and laboratory staff. Based on Bray-Curtis distances, phytoplankton assemblages were found to be significantly dissimilar according to the effect of changes in the specialist handling the sample and the employed fixative. The pair-wise permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed significant differences between the two fixatives utilized and also between the three taxonomists involved. Thus, laboratory-related effects should be considered in the study of phytoplankton time series.

Biocide emissions from building materials during wet weather: identification of substances, mechanism of release and transfer to the aquatic environment.

Biocides are added to or applied on building materials to prevent microorganisms from growing on their surface or to treat them. They are leached into building runoff and contribute to diffuse contamination of receiving waters. This review aimed at summarizing the current state of knowledge concerning the impact of biocides from buildings on the aquatic environment. The objectives were (i) to assess the key parameters influencing the leaching of biocides and to quantify their emission from buildings, (ii) to determine the different pathways from urban sources into receiving waters and (iii) to assess the associated environmental risk. Based on consumption data and leaching studies, a list of substances to monitor in receiving water was established. Literature review of their concentrations in the urban water cycle showed evidences of contamination and risk for aquatic life, which should put them into consideration for inclusion to European or international monitoring programs. However, some biocide concentration data in urban and receiving waters is still missing to fully assess their environmental risk, especially for isothiazolinones, iodopropynyl carbamate, zinc pyrithione and quaternary ammonium compounds, and little is known about their transformation products. Although some models supported by actual data were developed to extrapolate emissions on larger scales (watershed or city scales), they are not sufficient to prioritize the pathways of biocides from urban sources into receiving waters during both dry and wet weathers. Our review highlights the need to reduce emissions and limit their transfer into rivers and reports several solutions to address these issues.

New stormwater priority pollutants: comparison with international classifications, quality criteria and monitoring programs

Stonnwater discharges are generated by rain runoff from land and impervious areas such asroads, parking lots, and roofs during rainfall and snowmelt events. It contains an array ofdifferent pollutants such as organic matter, particles, heavy metals, inorganic trace elementsand xenobiotic organic compounds (XOCs). It is important to consider the hazards concerningthese pollutants when considering design of monitoring strategies, comparing differenthandling strategies for stonnwater utilisation, treatment methods and discharge to receivingwaters.In the EU 5FP funded Daywater project a list of selected stonnwater priority pollutants(SSPP) was identified, which has been used for assessing pollutant sources and fluxes,behaviour and fate during passage through best management practices (BMPs) and theenvironmental risk associated with their subsequent dispersal. The methodology used;Chemical Hazard Identification and Assessment Tool (CHIAT) aims at selecting relevantSSPP e.g. and can be used for development and evaluation of monitoring programmes.The Daywater SSPP-list consists of water quality parameters (BOD, COD, SS, nitrogen, pHand phosphorus); metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pt and Zn); PAHs (naphthalene, pyrene andbenzo[a]pyrene); herbicides (pendimethalin, phenmedipham, glyphosate and terbutylazine);and other XOCs (nonylphenol ethoxylates, pentachlorophenol, di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate,PCB-28 and MTBE) representing persistent, ubiquitous compounds and compounds derivingfrom specific anthropogenic sources.The list was compared with data found within the Danish nation-wide monitoringprogrammes for the aquatic environment (NOV A2003 and NOV ANA); European monitoringprogrammes; pollutant registers; individual European legislation; as well as quality criteriaand limit values. The comparison reveals differences since most of these are set on arbitrarycriteria or focuses on the current EU legislation. Overlaps was found with the studiedprogrammes, but also some "new" compounds was selected; platinum, herbicides and MTBEwhich indicate that revision of existing monitoring programmes is needed and that stonnwatercontains more hazardous pollutants than previously anticipated.

Historical preconditions of the creation of pharmacovigilance system in

The system of pharmacovigilance in the world appeared in response to series of tragedies related to the use of medicines. The largest of these were «sulfanilamide boom», «thalidomide tragedy» and «bomb with time mechanism».&#x0D; In Ukraine, the pharmacovigilance system has existed since 1996, and since 2002 Ukraine has been a member of the WHO international monitoring program for side effects. In 2000–2001 appeared the first orders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine that regulated the implementation of pharmacovigilance in Ukraine, and in 2007, when the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 898 came into force, the legislative framework in the pharmacovigilance system has been radically changed. This is connected with the reflection of the provisions of Directive 2001/83 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Community code relating to medicinal products in the order № 898.&#x0D; Today, the development of pharmacovigilance in Ukraine is carried out through adaptation to European legislation, which is stipulated by the Law of Ukraine «On the National Program of Adaptation of Ukrainian Legislation to the Law of the European Union».&#x0D; Among the prospects for the development of pharmacovigilance in Ukraine:&#x0D; &#x0D; introduction of amendments and additions to the legislative base of Ukraine in the context of pharmacovigilance;&#x0D; introduction of proactive management of the negative consequences of the use of drugs;&#x0D; introduction of the Automated Information System with the Pharmacovigilance System (AISЗ) into the health care system of Ukraine;&#x0D; dissemination of necessary knowledge about adverse reactions among the public, establishing the algorithm of action in case of an adverse reaction, the promotion of compliance and trust between the patient and the physician, reasoning of the rational, cautious and correct use of drugs and the prevention of self-treatment of serious conditions.&#x0D;

Analysis of Anthropic Pressure Indices in the Metropolitan Area of Braşov, Processed/Highlighted by Means of GIS

Abstract Metropolitan areas represent large urban centers, made up of a metropolis and adjacent areas of influence. In general, one or several cities are polarizing centers which inspire a name to the metropolitan area as the most important component of the city. The human pressure may be analyzed using anthropic pressure indices. They are calculated according to the relation between the surfaces with different types of occupation and the number of population overlapping such occupied areas. The data used in calculations may be found in official statistics and in international environmental monitoring programs. Such program is Copernicus which provides the Corine Land Cover data relating to use of land in Europe. To calculate and analyze anthropic pressure indices one may use GIS applications which process the Corine Land Cover data and create maps that expose changes occurred at visual level.

HUMAN HEALTH IN CONNECTION WITH ARCTIC POLLUTION - RESULTS AND PERSPECTIVES OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES UNDER THE AEGIS OF AMAP

Generalization of the results of environmental hygienic studies of pollution by persistent toxic substances (PTS) of Arctic environment, levels and dynamics of exposure to PTS and PTS health effects for residents of Arctic countries (Canada, Denmark/Greenland/Faroe Islands, USA, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia) within the framework of the recently published "Human Health in the Arctic - 2015" Report of the international Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) have been conducted. The chronology of the previous AMAP reports on Arctic Pollution and Human Health 1998-2009 is presented; the algorithm of the introduction and development of international system for evaluation of quality assessment / quality control of laboratory measurements (AMAP ring-test) is described, along with the completed and ongoing studies in circumpolar countries (projects, cohorts, objects, scopes, dates), levels of PTS in the blood of the surveyed contingents with the geographical comparisons between the circumpolar and non-Arctic countries, incl. long-term dynamics. Adverse health effects associated with exposure to PTS of Arctic residents: neurobehavioral, immunological, cardiovascular, reproductive, endocrine, diabetogenic, carcinogenic - are analyzed; genetic/epigenetic aspects and effect modifiers are briefly considered. Short recommendations for future scientific research and management decisions in the Arctic are formulated, including the need to continue the biomonitoring of PTS (biota and human biological media), the need to develop adaptation strategies and adequate approaches to risk communication, application of the precautionary principle for "new" POPs, taking into consideration the global and regional consequences of climate change and the emergence on this background of the additional health risks for Arctic residents.

The effects of run-of-river hydroelectric power schemes on invertebrate community composition in temperate streams and rivers.

Run-of-river (ROR) hydroelectric power (HEP) schemes are often presumed to be less ecologically damaging than large-scale storage HEP schemes. However, there is currently limited scientific evidence on their ecological impact. The aim of this article is to investigate the effects of ROR HEP schemes on communities of invertebrates in temperate streams and rivers, using a multi-site Before-After, Control-Impact (BACI) study design. The study makes use of routine environmental surveillance data collected as part of long-term national and international monitoring programmes at 22 systematically-selected ROR HEP schemes and 22 systematically-selected paired control sites. Five widely-used family-level invertebrate metrics (richness, evenness, LIFE, E-PSI, WHPT) were analysed using a linear mixed effects model. The analyses showed that there was a statistically significant effect (p<0.05) of ROR HEP construction and operation on the evenness of the invertebrate community. However, no statistically significant effects were detected on the four other metrics of community composition. The implications of these findings are discussed in this article and recommendations are made for best-practice study design for future invertebrate community impact studies.
