Scientific Publication Speed of Korean Medical Journals during the COVID-19 Era.

This study compared the scientific publication speeds of Korean medical journals before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) era. We analyzed 2,064 papers from 43 international Korean medical journals, selecting 12 papers annually from 2019 to 2022. We assessed publication speed indicators, including the time from submission to revision and from submission to publication. Additionally, we examined variations in publication speed based on journal and paper characteristics, including whether the studies were related to COVID-19. Among the 43 journals analyzed, 39.5% disclosed the peer review duration from submission to the first decision, and 11.6% reported their acceptance rates. The average time from submission to acceptance was 127.0 days in 2019, 126.1 days in 2020, 124.6 days in 2021, and 126.4 days in 2022. For COVID-19-related studies, the average time from submission to revision was 61.4 days, compared to 105.1 days for non-COVID-19 studies; from submission to acceptance, it was 87.4 days for COVID-19-related studies and 127.1 days for non-COVID-19 studies. All indicators for COVID-19-related studies showed shorter durations than those for non-COVID-19 studies, and the proportion of studies accepted within 30 or 60 days was significantly higher for COVID-19-related studies. This study investigated the publication speed of Korean international medical journals before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic influenced journals' review and publication processes, potentially impacting the quality of academic papers. These findings provide insights into publication speeds during the COVID-19 era, suggesting that journals should focus on maintaining the integrity of their publication and review processes.

Biofeedback therapy using Cerebri for the prevention of migraine attacks in adults with episodic migraine (BioCer): a randomized, wait-list controlled trial – the study protocol

Introduction Biofeedback is a non-pharmacological treatment option valued for its minimal risk of adverse events and offers a safe alternative for individuals seeking preventive care for migraine. Despite level A evidence for migraine prevention, biofeedback treatment is still unavailable to most patients. We developed a novel medical device (Cerebri) for multimodal biofeedback treatment that omits the need for healthcare personnel involvement. Cerebri consists of a smartphone application (app) and two wireless sensors. Unique in its approach, the Cerebri app seamlessly integrates three biofeedback modalities – heart rate variability, temperature, and electromyography – making it a comprehensive, therapist-independent solution for non-pharmacological migraine management. Methods Biofeedback therapy using Cerebri for the prevention of migraine attacks in adults with episodic migraine (The BioCer study) was an open-label, randomized, waitlist-controlled, multicenter trial. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of daily home-based biofeedback sessions using the Cerebri device. A total of 286 participants will be randomized to either a 12-week intervention arm or waitlist control arm. The primary outcome was the change in the mean number of migraine days from baseline to the last 28-day period during the treatment phase in the treatment group compared with the control group. The primary outcome variable was prospectively collected through daily eDiary entries. Ethics and Dissemination Approval from the ethics committee and competent authorities was obtained prior to study initiation. Participation was voluntary and informed and written consent was obtained prior to inclusion. The results of this trial will be published in peer-reviewed international medical journals and communicated to patients and healthcare personnel through the relevant channels. Social Media Promotion of Health Tests With Potential for Overdiagnosis or Overuse: Protocol for a Content Analysis.

In recent years, social media have emerged as important spaces for commercial marketing of health tests, which can be used for the screening and diagnosis of otherwise generally healthy people. However, little is known about how health tests are promoted on social media, whether the information provided is accurate and balanced, and if there is transparency around conflicts of interest. This study aims to understand and quantify how social media is being used to discuss or promote health tests with the potential for overdiagnosis or overuse to generally healthy people. Content analysis of social media posts on the anti-Mullerian hormone test, whole-body magnetic resonance imaging scan, multicancer early detection, testosterone test, and gut microbe test from influential international social media accounts on Instagram and TikTok. The 5 tests have been identified as having the following criteria: (1) there are evidence-based concerns about overdiagnosis or overuse, (2) there is evidence or concerns that the results of tests do not lead to improved health outcomes for generally healthy people and may cause harm or waste, and (3) the tests are being promoted on social media to generally healthy people. English language text-only posts, images, infographics, articles, recorded videos including reels, and audio-only posts are included. Posts from accounts with <1000 followers as well as stories, live videos, and non-English posts are excluded. Using keywords related to the test, the top posts were searched and screened until there were 100 eligible posts from each platform for each test (total of 1000 posts). Data from the caption, video, and on-screen text are being summarized and extracted into a Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Corporation) spreadsheet and included in the analysis. The analysis will take a combined inductive approach when generating key themes and a deductive approach using a prespecified framework. Quantitative data will be analyzed in Stata SE (version 18.0; Stata Corp). Data on Instagram and TikTok have been searched and screened. Analysis has now commenced. The findings will be disseminated via publications in peer-reviewed international medical journals and will also be presented at national and international conferences in late 2024 and 2025. This study will contribute to the limited evidence base on the nature of the relationship between social media and the problems of overdiagnosis and overuse of health care services. This understanding is essential to develop strategies to mitigate potential harm and plan solutions, with the aim of helping to protect members of the public from being marketed low-value tests, becoming patients unnecessarily, and taking resources away from genuine needs within the health system. A Journey Through the First to Eighteenth Issue of JKAHS

The Journal of Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (JKAHS) is an official publication of Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS), a government organization founded on October 20, 2011, by an act of the Parliament of Nepal [1]. KAHS was established with the objective of enhancing the quality of healthcare services, medical education, and research in remote and underserved areas of Nepal. The establishment of JKAHS in 2018 is a reflection of commitment of KAHS to these goals, providing a dedicated platform for the dissemination of scientific knowledge and clinical experiences in the health sciences [2].JKAHS is a peer-reviewed, international medical journal that operates under a diamond open access model, that means all its contents are freely accessible to readers without any subscription or paywall barriers [2]. This model not only broadens the journal’s audience, including researchers, students, policymakers, and the general public, but also aligns with the mission of KAHS to disseminate knowledge widely and equitably [1]. Importantly, JKAHS does not charge any fees for the submission, processing, or publication of manuscripts, thus removing financial barriers for authors and promoting inclusivity in scientific publishing. Additionally, to ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of its content in the internet, JKAHS archives all its articles in LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) [2]. These archiving systems safeguard the integrity and usability of the published work, ensuring that it remains available to future generations.It is triannual journal publishing three issues per year, and is available both online and in print with pISSN 2616-0064 and eISSN 2676-1327 [2]. This regular publication schedule ensures a steady flow of new research and insights, contributing to the continuous advancement of medical knowledge.Achievements and milestonesOne of our significant achievements has been in indexing of JKAHS in two national databases namely Nepal JournalOnline (NepJol) in 2019 [3] and NepalMedLine (NepMed) in 2020 [4]. The NepJol is hosted by Central Library (TUCL) and it is hosted by Ubiquity Press [3] whereas NepMed is hosted my Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC) [4]. A part from these national databases, we have been indexed in DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journal) [5] and Hinari [6] in 2023. In the earlier days after indexing in NepJol, individual articles were assigned an unique DOI (digital object identifier) from NepJol (10.3126/jkahs). Later on we have taken our own DOI (10.61814/jkahs) directly from CrossRef under the sponsroship under GEM (Global Equitable Membership (GEM) Program from CrossRef [7]. This recognition is a testament to the quality and impact of our published research. Being indexed has enhanced the visibility and accessibility of our articles, attracted a broader readership and fostered greater academic collaboration.

Background and Aim: Making quick decisions on the eligibility of a research work to accept and publish appearsto be a daunting task for most of the society journals in India. The aims of this study was to compare the extentof scientific article handling services provided by the Indian and international journals, and to reiterate theimportance of publishing the results of high impact research work in the shortest possible time.Material and Methods: An observational analysis of 19 Indian and 19 international medical journals affiliatedto subject specific societies was done. The journals were analyzed for the “median time taken from submissionof manuscript to first decision”, availability of “online first” facility and “number of issues” published in a year.Microsoft Office 2007 was used to formulate the data and presented in a descriptive manner using numbers.Results: All the international journals analyzed in this study were offering median timelines to first decisionranging from 7 days to 42 days on their websites compared to only 57.9% (n=11/19) of the Indian journals. Thelongest duration to respond among Indian journals is being taken by the Indian Journal of Psychiatry (90 days),with the shortest timeline being offered by the Indian Journal of Microbiology (5 days). In contrast to internationaljournals, 52.6% (n=10/19) of Indian journals were only providing the service of “online first” actively on theirwebsites. Among the international journals, 78.9% (n=15/19) were publishing monthly issues compared to only26.3% (n=5/19) of Indian journals.Conclusions: Indian journals published by societies must thrive hard to accelerate the editorial process in a timebound manner and disseminate the results of impactful research work at the earliest by recruiting large numberof reviewers and skilled technical personnel. Delay in decisions and publications by the journals can hamper theconfidence and trust among research community to send good scientific work.

Academic genres are not static, but they may change according to the values and demands of the particular discourse communities that shape them. This paper explores the research article (RA) abstract, a relevant informative and promotional genre that exhibits the prevalent rhetorical practices of a specific disciplinary community. From a diachronic perspective, our purpose is to examine how these practices have evolved over time. To this end, using a genre-based approach, we have analysed the rhetorical moves and steps of 180 RA abstracts published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, over a period of nine decades (1940–2022). The findings revealed that the abstracts have increasingly become more promotional in terms of the persuasive rhetorical strategies that the authors use to enhance the contribution of their research. This is seen in the fact that the texts of more recent decades present a growing number of promotional communicative functions, mainly the moves/steps that claim the importance of the research topic and state the implications or significance of research. This study can have pedagogical implications for English for research publication purposes (ERPP) practitioners and early career researchers who seek to publish in international medical journals.

Non-suicidal self-injury, as a type of auto-aggression, is a widespread behavioral problem among adolescents. Researchers have noted an increase in the number of self-harm in recent years. The aim of the work: to conduct a narrative review of the scientific literature on the epidemiology of auto-aggression and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Method: the article presents a narrative review of domestic and foreign literature on the epidemiology of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI). Articles were selected and analyzed in the databases MEDLINE/PubMed, Elibrary.ru, Scopus. To obtain basic information, publications from 2015 to 2022 were used, in international medical journals, as well as relevant references in the reference lists of the analyzed sources. At the same time, early publications on the subject were included for general information, definitions, and historical hindsight. The search was conducted using various variations of the specified keywords.Results: NSSI is most common in adolescents and young adults, and the age of onset has been reported to be most common between 12 and 14 years of age. There is no unambiguously accurate estimate of the prevalence of NSSI, when studying the literature, the prevalence is estimated to be in a wide range from 7.5 to 46.5% among adolescents. According to foreign meta-analyses, at present the average percentage of adolescents who have resorted to self-harm is from 16.9% to 19.5% and tends to increase. The prevalence of the phenomenon has increased greatly with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Auto-aggressive behavior, self-injurious behavior, and non-suicidal self-harm are now common among adolescents. It should be noted that the prevalence rates of this phenomenon remain insufficiently studied and are presented by studies for Western countries, there is still a lack of data in studies of the adolescent population of the Russian Federation due to the low level of knowledge of the phenomenon in the country.

The article presents a review of the literature on the subject of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI), the study of which attracts the attention of authors, both in the Russian Federation and around the world. Large meta-analyses of NSSP studies, proposed models, probable causes and mechanisms of occurrence, neurobiological factors, social factors, as well as the influence of modern means of communication and social networks are considered. Objective is to study, summarize and present data on the causes and risk factors of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Research method — articles in the “MEDLINE/PubMed”, “Scopus” databases in international medical journals were selected and analyzed. Articles were searched by keywords: “Self-Injurious Behavior”, “Non-Suicidal Self Injury”, “Deliberate Self-Harm”, “Self-Harm”, “Risk Factors”. Inclusion criteria: publication date from 2017 to 2022, clinical studies, meta-analyses and systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, availability of the full text in the public domain or abstract. Exclusion criteria: abstracts; monographs, study guides; publication date until 2017, inconsistency with the research topic. A total of 94 publications were found. The review included 61 publications from 2017 to 2022 that corresponded to the topic and purpose of the study, and also added 19 sources older than 2017 that are significant for disclosing the subject of the study from references in the reference lists of the analyzed sources.

These developments are novel forms of case reports published in international medical journals, going beyond the mere reporting of a case of a new disease or of its novel aspects. Rationale and Design of JenaMACS-Acute Hemodynamic Impact of Ventricular Unloading Using the Impella CP Assist Device in Patients with Cardiogenic Shock.

Introduction: Cardiogenic shock due to myocardial infarction or heart failure entails a reduction in end organ perfusion. Patients who cannot be stabilized with inotropes and who experience increasing circulatory failure are in need of an extracorporeal mechanical support system. Methods and Study Design: JenaMACS (Jena Mechanical Assist Circulatory Support) is a monocenter, proof-of-concept study to determine whether treatment with an Impella CP® leads to improvement of hemodynamic parameters in patients with cardiogenic shock requiring extracorporeal, hemodynamic support. The primary outcomes of JenaMACS are changes in hemodynamic parameters measured by pulmonary artery catheterization and changes in echocardiographic parameters of left and right heart function before and after Impella® implantation at different support levels after 24 h of support. Secondary outcome measures are hemodynamic and echocardiographic changes over time as well as clinical endpoints such as mortality or time to hemodynamic stabilization. Further, laboratory and clinical safety endpoints including severe bleeding, stroke, neurological outcome, peripheral ischemic complications and occurrence of sepsis will be assessed. JenaMACS addresses essential questions of extracorporeal, mechanical, cardiac support with an Impella CP® device in patients with cardiogenic shock. Knowledge of the acute and subacute hemodynamic and echocardiographic effects may help to optimize therapy and improve the outcome in those patients. Integration of theoretical principals of psychosomatic medicine and practice of Balint supervision in physicians in the promotion of effective professional communication

The review of the Russian and foreign literature on the relationships of psychosomatic medicine and Balint supervision of physicians was conducted. We selected and analyzed articles from MEDLINE / PubMed Elibrary.ru, Scopus databases during from 1990 till 2020, international medical journals and collections of scientific papers as well as relevant references in the bibliography of the analyzed articles. The search was carried out with the usage of search queries of various combinations of the specified key words.The “philosophy” of psychosomatic medicine and the theory of Balint supervision have the evident common historical grounds. Psychosomatic medicine and Balint supervision are united by the conception that the patient’s perceptions about his/her illness, related to it experiences and behavior as well as their relationships to his/her unconscious are very important in the therapy process. That means that the experiences and behavior of a physician related to the complicated communication with the patient are important as well. The patient has to be no more a passive object of the care so the process of therapy obtains the character of interpersonal communication and the mutual influence between the patient and the physician. This point is what Balint supervision is focused at. The technology of Balint group work helps physicians to shift an emphasis in the clinical practice from the disease-centered to the patient-centered approach. The analysis of Balint groups effectiveness provided during more than fifty years brought an evidence that Michael Balint presented very efficient method which helped physicians in different medical fields and psychologists reduce their emotional arousal in the treatment of “difficult” patients who are patients with psychosomatic disorders very frequently. The integrative relationships between basic approaches of psychosomatic medicine and Balint supervision in physicians and psychologists are described. The history of the relations and common principles related to the attention to the complexed issues of physician-patient communication and the therapy in psychosomatic disorders which becomes more successful due to the impact of analytical Balint supervision, are analyzed. The significance of Balint groups work in the training of the health care professionals, who are treating patients with psychosomatic disorders, difficulties and perspectives of implementation of Balint group method into the system of education and training of general practitioners, psychiatrists and psychotherapists are presented.

A Review of International Experience for Telerehabilitation of Post-stroke Patients with Aphasia and Cognitive Problems

Stroke remains one of the most common reasons of disabilities worldwide. Aphasia, memory and cognitive problems are among common stroke consequences significantly reducing stroke survivors’ life quality. To grant access of a large number of stroke survivors to rehabilitation services, and sustain continuous rehabilitation during pandemic, the telerehabilitation can be used. This article summarizes current approaches on telerehabilitation of post-stroke patients with aphasia, cognitive and memory problems. Authors made a search of research articles and review papers from international medical journals indexed in Scopus, Sciencedirect, and PubMed databases. The results show that the telerehabilitation is feasible providing significant clinical outcomes and can be organized synchronously and asynchronously to meet needs for increasing demand of post-stroke patients. Despite the positive effects of telerehabilitation, there were some limitations. To overcome these limitations, further clinical studies on large groups are needed.
