Mathematical olympiads in the People's Republic of China

This new series of Chinese olympiads is admittedly experimental. Chinese educators are studying the results of these contests. Building upon this acquired experience, they hope to improve and expand such competitions in the future. New standards of mathematical excellence are now being established in the PRC and future mathematical olympiads will accordingly be more demanding. It appears evident that in the near future, a team from the People's Republic of China will participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad [10].

The Twentieth International Mathematical Olympiad

The Twentieth International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Bucharest, Romania, on 6 and 7 July 1978. A special thanks is due to the Office of Naval Research for supporting a three-week training session of the United States team at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, and to the Army Research Office for providing travel expenses.

An Olympiad problem

Many communist countries hold internal olympiads in order to identify and thereafter foster special talents. Since 1959 they have held an annual International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) for all European communist countries (except Albania) and subsequently Mongolia, Cuba and Vietnam. Non-communist countries were first invited in 1967 and France, Sweden, Italy and Great Britain accepted the invitation. Italy has dropped out and Austria, Netherlands and USA now regularly participate. Belgium, Finland and, last year, Greece have also taken part. Each country sends a maximum of eight competitors and two adults.

In Spring 1963 the first National Mathematical Contest here was organized by Mr. F. R. Watson (now of the Dept. of Education, Keele University). The papers were those of the Mathematical Society of America and Society of Actuaries (past papers are published in the two “Contest Problem Books” (Random House)). About 1000 people, aged 14-18, took part. There were no prizes, only the interest, for teacher and pupil, of submitting to an American test in which even those of modest talent can put up a satisfactory performance.
