Review of Libraries Serving Dialogue

Libraries Serving Dialogue, edited by Odile Dupont on behalf of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), is a book volume with multiple authors who provide documentation of and personal experiences with projects that grapple with interfaith dialogue and interreligious connections. Information stewards who work with theological and religious materials, initiatives, and conversations and who are interested in learning from their international peers may benefit from this resource. While a language barrier presented in some chapters may hinder a reader’s ability in fully engaging with the text, the book contributes a necessary perspective in encouraging librarians to bring diverse patrons together through the lens of religion in working towards a peaceful and thriving society.

Global perspectives: library professionals' views on multimedia books in airlines

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the potential impact and passenger perceptions of integrating multimedia books within airline services, aiming to elucidate the evolving landscape of in-flight entertainment and reading experiences.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative research methodology was used, using a structured questionnaire distributed to presenters at the International Federation of Library Associations.FindingsAnalysis revealed varying passenger interest in multimedia books, with approximately 57.7% displaying engagement, while 40.4% demonstrated limited interest or none. However, a notable majority (60.6%) preferred multimedia books over traditional print books during flights. Furthermore, 90.4% perceived a positive impact of multimedia books on flight reading experiences, leading to increased satisfaction (81.7%) and a high likelihood of recommending airlines offering such content (91.3%).Research limitations/implicationsThe study's limitations include a specific focus on International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) presenters, potentially limiting broader generalisations. Further research might explore the preferences of a wider demographic range and incorporate qualitative aspects to deepen understanding. Airlines could leverage multimedia books to enhance passenger satisfaction, attract diverse audiences and foster cultural inclusivity within in-flight entertainment.Originality/valueThis study contributes insights into the evolving landscape of in-flight entertainment, emphasising the significant potential and positive impact of integrating multimedia books within airline services. It underscores the importance of catering to diverse passenger preferences and enhancing overall satisfaction during air travel.

Librarians’ attitudes toward library’s roles in environmental sustainability

The library community has been committed to environmental sustainability. The Green Library Movement calls for libraries to green their building, operation, and services. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) calls for libraries to actively contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in which environmental sustainability was one of the three aspects of sustainability in addition to social and economic sustainability. The American Library Association (ALA) has also added sustainability as one of the core values of librarianship. However, previous research identified a gap between librarians’ perceived importance of environmental sustainability and the actual practices adopted in their libraries that contribute to environmental sustainability. This current study focuses on examining librarians’ attitudes toward the roles of libraries in environmental sustainability advocated by IFLA and ALA by surveying librarians from California, Florida, and Georgia identified from the state library association listservs and the individual library websites. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and the Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis. Findings from this study will add to the understanding of the previously identified gap by comprehending the roles that librarians identify with regarding libraries’ contribution to environmental sustainability. The findings will also inform professional organizations on what support their members might need the most in promoting environmental sustainability in society and community. Lastly, the findings could inform curricular development for Library and Information Studies programs interested in preparing librarians with environmental awareness.

IFLA 2023: connecting librarians and information professionals

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report the 2023 conference of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) conference activities for 2023 as held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands from 21 to 25 August.Design/methodology/approachA report of the events that spanned five days, especially the aspects that hinged on technology use in libraries globally are highlighted. Narrative of the experiences during the conference is made from the participatory observation standpoint.FindingsLibrarians globally are connecting and collaborating. They use technology in their libraries and research into ways and means of collaborating more. Library associations globally are making impact especially in the use of artificial intelligence in service delivery. All sections of IFLA are active in working together and librarying!Originality/valueThe IFLA 2023 conference is one-of-a-kind experience in the library association world. Libraries and librarians globally are finding out new things yearly and the year 2023 is no different.

Peter J Lor: mentor and mentee unbounded

PurposeAn attribute common throughout Lor’s distinguished career has been a passion for learning and continuous improvement in an approach that sets high standards, both for himself and others. Taking on the informal mantle of both mentor and mentee, these contributions have blended with no clear boundaries or timelines.Design/methodology/approachLor has been active in the library and information sector (LIS) landscape since the 1960s. A stalwart of the library and information profession, the author is being honoured by International Federation of Library Associations and Institution (IFLA) with a prestigious festschrift in recognition of a librarian who has made a sustained contribution to the library and information profession over decades with significant impact on academia, scholarship, praxis, communities and individual librarians.FindingsLor is recognized as a lifelong mentee as evidenced by his unbounded forays into discovery driven by a natural curiosity that, in turn, shaped his approach to mentoring through teaching, instilling best practices in research methodology and significant contributions to international librarianship. Today this continues in a regular column for South African librarians, drawing from the international literature of books, libraries and information, his role as a key figure in the establishment of Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) in the 1990s, as well as experience from close involvement in developing LIS policies for post-apartheid South Africa, drafting guidelines for national library legislation and serving as IFLA Secretary-General in The Hague.Originality/valueThis viewpoint has been an attempt to share reflections on one individual’s lifetime of influence without borders or timelines. Without doubt, Lor’s global mentorship reach remains unbounded in his approach to critical thinking and desire for continuous improvement for himself and others.

A central mandate of the teacher librarian (TL) is the development of information literatestudents who can locate and use information responsibly and ethically as learners and citizens(Australian Library and Information Association, 2016; International Federation of LibraryAssociations and Institutions, 2021). Therefore, it is vital that TLs are supported in theirendeavours to deliver high quality information literacy instruction, which reflects thechanging nature of information and the information landscape.

Facing Threats to Libraries and Cultural Heritage in the Russia-Ukraine War: A Case Study and Comparative Review of the Library and Information Community’s’ Responses to the Conflict

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded and began a war in Ukraine. After it commenced, the international library and information community began responding. Specifically, formal public-facing response on the conflict were released by the American Library Association (ALA), Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA), Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), Danish Library Association (DLA), European Bureau of Library, Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA), International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), Library Association of Latvia (LAL), and New Zealand Library Association Inc. (LIANZA). Chronicling and describing the international library and information community’s first public-facing responses addressing Russia’s war in Ukraine is the main objective of this article. Drawing upon a combined policy and thematic analysis of some of these first formal public responses, the article aims are to help account, review, and contextualize the ways in which this community considered the war during its first week and, in turn, reveal areas or issues of convergence or divergence between them. Specifically, it provides a snapshot in time revealing the international library and information community’s immediate perspectives and positions on the war during its earliest stages. For instance, the formal public responses released by the ALA, ALIA, CFLA, CILIP, DLA, EBLIDA, IFLA, LAL, and LIANZA during the war’s first week demonstrates international concern about the conflict and its affects on their Ukrainian counterparts and cultural heritage. Broad thematic convergence surfaces across the responses. Almost all plead for solutions to and resolution of the war. A majority offer solidarity for Ukrainian colleagues and all Ukrainians, support democracy and freedom of expression, asseverate for spreading accurate information about the war, and condemn Russia’s assault. Additional themes appearing in some of the responses include assisting Ukrainian refugees and displaying dismay regarding threats confronting Ukrainian cultural heritage.

Toward a framework for visual nomen

PurposeThrough examination of the Library Reference Model (LRM) specifications for nomen and the potential challenges visual nomen might present for their description and use in information systems, the purpose of this study was to investigate two questions: (1) how do nonlinguistic or nonalphanumeric signs or symbols act as nomen to identify entities? and (2) what details or attributes are relevant to describe and classify such nomen to integrate them into information systems?Design/methodology/approachThis research was built on an exploratory, qualitative instrumental case study design using multiple (or comparative) cases. Using the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions LRM conceptualization of nomen as the basis, this research explored the similarities and differences between the LRM definition, its attributes and the use of nonlinguistic and nonalphanumeric “strings” for visual nomen to represent a res, moving iteratively between the LRM documentation, visual nomen identified in previous research and additional examples. This study used a constant comparative method to conduct a structured, focused comparison across different cases found in the source survey.FindingsA close review of the history of the development of the nomen entity was made to understand the semiotic relationship between entities and their symbolic representation, how those symbols are then reified to be further classified and described and how such definitions in the LRM offer a path forward for better understanding the role and function of visual nomen. Based on the foundation of the nomen entity and its attributes established in the LRM, this research then looked at visual representations of concepts and entities to suggest a nascent framework for describing aspects of visual nomen which may be relevant to their use and applicationOriginality/valueThis exploratory study of the use of supralinguistic ways of referencing entities delineates novel insights into a potential framework for describing and using visual nomen as a way of labeling or naming entities represented in information systems. By examining the specifications of the nomen entity and its attributes as delineated by the LRM, this study reinforces the applicability of LRM-defined attributes in the use of visual nomen in addition to offering other attributes or dimensions.

Endangered cultural heritage in the Russia–Ukraine war: comparing and critiquing interventions by international cultural heritage organizations

ABSTRACT Cultural heritage in Ukraine is presently endangered. As Russia’s war against the country continues, Ukrainian cultural heritage has been damaged, destroyed, and remains at risk. Interventions into the war initiated by the international cultural heritage community commenced with the issuance of formal public statements regarding the war and its implications. This article reviews the statements by some of the world’s leading cultural heritage organizations, specifically the International Council on Archives (ICA), the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Twin objectives are offered: first, establishing an overview of the international cultural heritage community’s early communications regarding the war; and second, comparing and critiquing these public pronouncements and implications for Ukrainian cultural heritage. Ultimately, a joint contemporary and historical snapshot situating the international cultural heritage community within the war’s early stages is presented.

Interior Arrangement in Children Libraries during the Covid 19 Pandemic Process: The Example of Konya Seljuk Municipality KPP Children s Library

The aim of this study is to analyse the compliance of the Seljuk Municipality Konya Plain Project Children's Library in Konya, Turkey with the design principles in line with the recommendations of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. This descriptive study, which aims to analyse Konya Plain Project Children Library from a spatial point of view, was conducted according to the case study from qualitative research methods. In this study, the physical, ergonomic, and social suitability of the library was evaluated by photographing technique by making observations and measurements, presented with visual materials and the inadequacies in its structure were revealed. The fact that the building was designed as a municipal building and later converted into a library caused some of the parameters recommended by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions to not meet sufficiently. The fact that the library is located on the third floor has limited its relationship with the environment, its location in the centre of the city and on a noisy street, and the inability to control the sound in the study rooms have increased the noise level. The natural lighting of the library is determined to be uncontrolled and insufficient. It was determined that there were no building elements to control the sun, direction finding signs and a care room for babies or children. In addition, it was determined that ergonomic criteria were ignored in the design of the space. As a result of this study, it was determined that the Konya Plain Project Children's Library should be redesigned in terms of location, noise level, natural and artificial lighting, signage and wayfinding signs, child or baby care room. In addition, it has been determined that comfort and aesthetic elements have been at the forefront of the Konya Plain Project Children's Library, and it has been tried to keep up with the requirements of technology institutionally. Space design has been emphasized and suggestions have been developed in order to increase the use of children's libraries and to make the service appealing to wider audiences.

(195) Proposal to amend the Preamble by adding a “potentially sensitive content disclaimer and limitation of liability”

Authors of several discussion articles (Gillman & Wright in Commun. Biol. 3: art. 609. 2020; Smith & Figueiredo in Taxon 71: 1–5. 2022; Wright & Gillman in Taxon 71: 6–10. 2022; Smith & al. in Taxon 71: 933–935. 2022; Thiele & al. in Taxon 71: 1151–1154. 2022) and formal proposals to amend the Code (Smith & Figueiredo in Taxon 70: 1395–1396. 2021; Hammer & Thiele in Taxon 70: 1392–1394. 2021) recently proposed to allow and endorse the rejection and/or replacement of scientific names of taxa that are considered to be “culturally offensive and inappropriate”, or even some other names, those supposedly not offensive and inappropriate but, e.g., reflecting the “colonial or imperialist past”. In my opinion, such proposals are mainly based on political, social, ethical and/or ethnocultural criteria, which are not currently considered as nomenclaturally decisive in the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (“Code”: Turland & al. in Regnum Veg. 159. 2018) and other Codes of biological nomenclature. These ideas and proposals were extensively discussed (Knapp & al. in Taxon 69: 1409–1410. 2020; Gillman & Wright in Bionomina 25: 93–97. 2021; Smith & al., l.c.; Thiele & al., l.c.) and/or criticised in scientific journals (see Heenan & al. in New Zealand J. Bot. 59: 291–322. 2021; Palma & Heath in Bionomina 22: 32–38. 2021; McGlone & al. in New Zealand J. Bot. 60: 215–226. 2022; Mosyakin in Taxon 70: 1379–1380. 2021; in Taxon 71: 249–255. 2022; in Taxon 71: 1141–1150. 2022; in Taxon, https://doi.org/10.1002/tax.12837. 2022). It is also worth considering that in its official communication on similar issues the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (Ceríaco & al. in Zool. J. Linn. Soc. 197: 283–286. 2023) concluded that “renaming taxa on ethical grounds threatens nomenclatural stability and scientific communication”. I understand and respectfully acknowledge that some vulnerable or emotionally sensitive people or groups of people consider some names of organisms governed by the Code as “offensive and/or inappropriate”. In such cases, a sensitive content disclaimer and a limitation of liability statement are desirable. In particular, I think that such an addition to the Code could be useful for safeguarding the authors and editors of the present Code, as well as all those who in good faith and for lawful purposes create, modify and/or use scientific names of organisms covered by this Code, against possible accusations and allegations. PurposePeter Lor’s contributions to library and information science and practice are myriad. This essay focusses on his contributions to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).Design/methodology/approachThe essay recalls Lor’s achievements and draws on the author’s experience of working with him during challenging times for IFLA.FindingsLor’s work and achievements illustrate how the global interconnectedness of the field emerges from and enlivens its local practice and that the global is in turn informed by the local.Social implicationsAs an international Federation of library associations and libraries together with practitioners, IFLA reaches into the majority of the world’s nations. This essay demonstrates how leadership within one nation and at a global level can have far reaching results.Originality/valueThe author was in a unique position as IFLA President-elect and then President when Lor was appointed Secretary General of the Federation. The author viewpoint is that of an insider and a colleague.

The effect of pre-class online video on improving knowledge retention and motivation

Since humankind entered the computerised period, data and the amount of information available through digital sources have drastically increased, and people nowadays can also generate and distribute information. As a result of these changes, knowledge acquisition was characterised by a rapid increase in information. However, the retention of such information or knowledge can be challenging. To understand how it happened with the undergraduate students, we developed a 4-minute digital pre-class video designed specifically for undergraduate students and assessed its capacity to verify news based on the method of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, which consists of eight evaluation criteria and key points to consider. To examine the video's efficacy, we used a randomised controlled design among the control and experiment groups, with an in-class session based on both a pre-class video and PowerPoint materials for the experiment group and an in-class session using PowerPoint materials only for the control group. The instructional materials motivation survey questionnaire and the fake news literacy test were utilised to examine motivation, knowledge acquisition and knowledge retention. The results showed that while students of both groups had similar performances as regards knowledge acquisition, they nonetheless showed a considerable difference in retention and motivation of knowledge from the perspective of attention and relevance. These results show a huge potential for using pre-class video and appropriate and effective content to combat false information in Thailand. Nevertheless, the research is subject to limitations. The study was only carried out at Chiang Mai University. More research experiments at other universities are required. Copyright Education and the Role of Library Associations: Current Practices and Needed Support

The International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA)’s 2018 “Statement on Copyright Education and Copyright Literacy” highlights the need for librarians to be copyright literate and for library associations to support copyright education for library professionals. Nonetheless, while the role of library associations in supporting copyright education is foregrounded, little research has investigated the copyright initiatives of library associations. This study addresses that gap, documenting the current copyright training activities of library associations and providing recommendations for how IFLA might address copyright education needs of library workers. The research for this study took place in two phases, beginning with case studies of six library associations, followed by a multinational survey, with respondents representing 28 library associations from 25 countries. This study reveals that associations struggle to provide the full extent of copyright education resources they would like to due to a lack of funding and lack of copyright expertise among other issues. Based on survey responses, IFLA has an opportunity to directly address a global need in the library association community and overcome the barriers to developing and delivering copyright education, beginning by providing a website with basic copyright information and resources, providing training for association members on how to develop and deliver their own copyright education training, or providing guidelines on a copyright education curriculum.

This is the final historic article from DttP celebrating 50 years, which I thought appropriate with the ongoing war in Ukraine. The author was Chair of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions Section on Official Publications from 1985 to 1989.As we waited in line for a flight out of Moscow on Friday, August 23, E. J. Josey said it for all of us—“It was an emotional week, tiring because of the emotions.” We librarians had been part of the revolution against the Moscow coup, the revolution for freedom. One of the Soviet librarians, who has risked her life at the barricades, explained that because we stayed in Moscow during the coup and continued the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) meeting, that it helped protect those librarians fighting the coup. She and the other Soviet librarians thanked us with hugs and kisses.

Web Sites of Primary School Libraries - Case of the Šibenik City

The school library is an informational, cultural, and educational center of the school. According to the School library guidelines they are “...learning environments that provide space (physical and digital), access to resources, and access to activities and services to encourage and support student, teacher, and community learning“ (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, 2015). With the advance of the Internet, the library is presented to the world and enables continuous contact with other centers and other libraries, so they are functioning in both physical and digital space. And the history of the school library website is a very long one as school librarians were the professionals that accepted new technology in the early days. As Dukić (2012) writes “the first web pages of school libraries appeared in developed countries as early as 1994. From 1995 to 1996, the number of school library websites increased rapidly. However, the main feature of these websites was static, because the communication was mostly in one direction - from the website to the user”. With the advance of Web 2.0 librarians became able to create their own library websites without excessive computer skills. Awareness ofthe need to create websites exists and is strengthened by trends from the outside, but we must keep in mind the need to modernize them because outdated and uninformative pages can only harm the library. Namely, they are the identity card with which the library enters the most remote homes, other libraries, research centers, etc..“ (Lazzarich, 2003). Today, when most children and young people grow up with digital technology and the Internet, creating their own library website is an appropriate way to bring the library, and thus reading, closer to young people. Well-designed websites can be a good tool for searching for information related to learning, but also a virtual learning community in which school librarians can collaborate with staf and students. Valenza (2007) goes even further in analyzing the quality of the websites by creating a taxonomy of the school library websites. But what happens when the school and their library's physical space are closed due to the lockdown. Shifting their physical space in the virtual one assumes well-developed communication strategies. The question that arises is should the virtual space be the same as before the pandemics or should it adapt to the new context. The goal of our research is to investigate the current development of the school library websites in one of the Croatian cities and investigate if they respond to the current challenges of the transformed educational environment.

From words to actions: assessing the impact of antiracist declarations in library and information science

The aims of this paper are to reaffirm calls for the global elimination of racism in library and information science, to specify ways of making progress towards such elimination, and to indicate how to assess the extent to which the declarations made by international bodies have had an impact on the success of antiracist strategies in which library and information science professionals engage at the local level. A review is undertaken of the declarations on racism made by the United Nations (UN), and by two professional organisations: the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO). A case study approach is then taken in identifying antiracist strategies in library and information science in the United States. International declarations on racism are numerous and expansive, and are suggestive of several important categories of antiracist strategy. A means of assessing the relationship between declarations and strategies is proposed. It is concluded that the impact of declarations has not been substantial. Affirmative action policies, hate speech bans, reparative taxonomies, and actions decentring whiteness are few and far between in library and information science. Renewed effort should be made to engage in antiracist strategies of the kinds promoted in the declarations.

Librarians’ Attitude Towards Providing Environmental Education Services in Their Community

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) advocates for libraries’ contributions to the global sustainable development efforts. Environment sustainability is one of the three pillars of the United Nations sustainable development concept. It’s crucial to examine libraries’ stance on environmental sustainability to see how they align with the professional organizations’ position. Case studies on libraries’ environmentally sustainable practices and services are plentiful. However, there is still the need for more empirical research that systematically examines libraries’ position and practice on environmental sustainability and the roles libraries play in building environmentally sustainable communities. This study fills the gap by surveying librarians from three states in the United States. The findings will be of interest to library associations to better support their member libraries in this endeavor. The findings are also important to LIS educators if they consider embedding environmental sustainability or environmental issues in LIS courses.

Libraries post Covid 19 pandemic: Considerations from Mexico

The objective of this paper is to show a general description of the first actions that librarians carried out in Mexico in the face of the Covid 19 pandemic, both to respond to the user in their demands for information, and to carry out their professional and leisure activities. The actions undertaken by librarians of academic libraries in the context of the pandemic are presented. Libraries in Mexico are one of the main sources of access to documentary information. In general, all types of libraries had to suspend their services during the pandemic and initiate protocols to restart functions. In this paper we have specifically addressed the contingency measures implemented in university libraries. Academic libraries had to adapt quickly to continue offering documentary and information services and with this, continue to carry out their functions in the development of professional training activities, technological developments, research, administration, and extension of culture. Both university libraries and users (students, professors, researchers, and administrative staff) had to adapt to the contingency since in most cases protocols were established both for prevention to avoid contagion and for user care.
 This document is the result of the research carried out based on the information answered by 40 libraries studied, to whom an instrument was applied. The literature on current topics was consulted in various databases and information from the websites of the libraries themselves. Information was also collected from approximately 20 academic events organized by library associations and other information professionals, such as the AMBAC (Civil Association of Librarians), the Library College of Mexico and the IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions).
