The ILAE/IBE/WHO Global Campaign against Epilepsy: Bringing Epilepsy “Out of the Shadows”

Epilepsy affects at least 100 million people worldwide at some time in their lives, especially in childhood and adolescence. It is a universal problem involving all ages, races, social classes, and nations. Nevertheless, it has been misunderstood, feared, and stigmatized for more than 3000 years. The psychosocial and economic consequences of epilepsy are considerable in developed nations but are even greater in developing nations, where the treatment gap may vary from 60 to 98%. To address the long-standing worldwide neglect of this disease, a campaign titled Epilepsy: Out of the Shadows has been launched by an alliance of three global organizations: the International League against Epilepsy (ILAE), the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Global, regional, and national initiatives are currently underway.

Epilepsy in Latin America and the Caribbean: a survey on needs and resources

A survey was done on the needs and resources available to control epilepsy in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Responses came from ministries of health, prominent neurologists, and epilepsy advocacy organizations. A mailed questionnaire was used, and the response rate was excellent, 89%. The survey results showed that the private sector is better equipped to deal with epilepsy than is the public sector, in terms of both specialized personnel and access to a variety of drugs. Public policies are lacking, and linkages between medical personnel and social workers are almost nonexistent. Primary care doctors and nurses are somewhat able to diagnose some types of epilepsy but do less well with other types of the disorder. There is a strong justification for the new "Out of the Shadows" initiative, in which the International League Against Epilepsy, the International Bureau for Epilepsy, the World Health Organization, and the Pan American Health Organization are working to improve epilepsy health-care services, treatment, and social acceptance.

THE World Headache Alliance (WHA) and the International Bureau for Epilepsy have joined to raise awareness of women's issues in the treatment of migraine and epilepsy, two disorders that have long carried a stigma.

Materials review

It is the intention of the Journal in all future editions to review new materials on epilepsy. This will not simply be books, but all types of materials including audiovisual. Already a huge amount of video material on epilepsy exists throughout the world. The Commission on Audiovisual Education (International Bureau for Epilepsy) reported in their booklet ‘Using Audiovisuals in Epilepsy’ (1991) that 413 videos on epilepsy existed worldwide. These were from countries as diverse as Chile, Canada, India, New Zealand, etc. The Commission produces a booklet entitled ‘Epilepsy in Focus’ which outlines the material. Addenda are also available in addition to the original booklet. In future editions we would especially like to feature video material available from around the world and the Editor would welcome the submission of any material for review. In this first issue material available from the United Kingdom is highlighted. All videos are in English and are available in VHS (PAL) format. Some titles are also available in Secam and NTSC on request, but obviously the price will be different to those quoted. The information should update all readers on the most frequently used, currently available material. Many of the videos featured have won awards emphasizing their quality.
