Using a standardized sound set to help characterize misophonia: The International Affective Digitized Sounds.

Misophonia is a condition characterized by negative affect, intolerance, and functional impairment in response to particular repetitive sounds usually made by others (e.g., chewing, sniffing, pen tapping) and associated stimuli. To date, researchers have largely studied misophonia using self-report measures. As the field is quickly expanding, assessment approaches need to advance to include more objective measures capable of differentiating those with and without misophonia. Although several studies have used sounds as experimental stimuli, few have used standardized stimuli sets with demonstrated reliability or validity. To conduct rigorous research in an effort to better understand misophonia, it is important to have an easily accessible, standardized set of acoustic stimuli for use across studies. Accordingly, in the present study, the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS-2), developed by Bradley and Lang (Bradley MM et al., 2007), were used to determine whether participants with misophonia responded to certain standardized sounds differently than a control group. Participants were 377 adults (132 participants with misophonia and 245 controls) recruited from an online platform to complete several questionnaires and respond to four probes (arousal, valence, similarity to personally-relevant aversive sounds, and sound avoidance) in response to normed pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral IADS-2 sounds. Findings indicated that compared to controls, participants with high misophonia symptoms rated pleasant and neutral sounds as significantly more (a) arousing and similar to trigger sounds in their everyday life, (b) unpleasant and (c) likely to be avoided in everyday life. For future scientific and clinical innovation, we include a ranked list of IADS-2 stimuli differentiating responses in those with and without misophonia, which we call the IADS-M.

Impact of emotion-laden acoustic stimuli on group synchronisation performance

The ability to synchronise with other people is a core socio-motor competence acquired during human development. In this study we aimed to understand the impact of individual emotional arousal on joint action performance. We asked 15 mixed-gender groups (of 4 individuals each) to participate in a digital, four-way movement synchronisation task. Participants shared the same physical space, but could not see each other during the task. In each trial run, every participant was induced with an emotion-laden acoustic stimulus (pre-selected from the second version of International Affective Digitized Sounds). Our data demonstrated that the human ability to synchronise is overall robust to fluctuations in individual emotional arousal, but performance varies in quality and movement speed as a result of valence of emotional induction (both on the individual and group level). We found that three negative inductions per group per trial led to a drop in overall group synchronisation performance (measured as the median and standard deviation of Kuramoto’s order parameter—an index measuring the strength of synchrony between oscillators, in this study, players) in the 15 sec post-induction. We report that negatively-valenced inductions led to slower oscillations, whilst positive induction afforded faster oscillations. On the individual level of synchronisation performance we found an effect of empathetic disposition (higher competence linked to better performance during the negative induction condition) and of participant’s sex (males displayed better synchronisation performance with others). We believe this work is a blueprint for exploring the frontiers of inextricably bound worlds of emotion and joint action, be it physical or digital.

Emotional Distraction in E-learning Environment: Effect on Declarative Memory and Exploration of Physiological Marker

One of the advantage of e-learning method is the flexibility of embedding audio-visual materials, however whether this goal-irrelevant stimuli would distract the users instead and hinder their performance is generally unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of emotional distraction (ED) on the declarative memory performance. The study was conducted using the within-subject experiment on 38 students aged 18-21 years (20 males). Declarative memory was measured using a Word-Pair Association (WPA) task. ED is given using the International Affective Pictures System (IAPS) and International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) grouped based on their valence (neutral, positive, and negative). Measurement of physiological responses was done by measuring Galvanic Skin Responses (GSR), and Electroencephalography (EEG) with Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA) index. Result: significant difference on the WPA score of which Positive is lower than Neutral condition (p = 0.011), but only on the group which the positive block were presented first. From the GSR data, significant main effect of the order of experimental block regardless of the ED valence (p < 0.001; F = 16.045), the first block elicits significantly higher GSR amplitude compared to second (p < 0.001; t = 4.94) and third (p = 0.001; t = 3.90). Meanwhile, the FAA index showed no significant difference (p = 0.654; F = 0.433).

Mexican validation of the International Affective Digitized Sounds second edition (IADS-2) and additional sounds

Affective stimuli have been extensively used in emotion research for a better understanding of emotion regulation. Sound ratings, specifically non-verbal sounds, are biased by demographic indicators such as sex and nationality. Therefore, it is crucial to characterize sounds prior to their use in emotion research. This study aims to validate the IADS-2 database and additional sounds in a sample from the Mexican population. Three hundred twenty-nine participants born and raised in Mexico remotely listened to 174 sounds in monophonic format. They rated sounds according to the valence-arousal-dominance model using the Self-Assessment Manikin test. Results positively correlated to those of previous studies. Sex differences were observed only in dominance between female and male groups, contrary to the results from Portuguese, American and Japanese validations. Geographic region analysis demonstrated differences in arousal, indicating the need for additional research on occident and south regions. Furthermore, when conducting affective research, headphones and audio quality should be considered, primarily to reduce variability due to audio-related aspects, and to avoid changes in emotional experience. Finally, this study supports the feasibility of remote affective sound experiments over the internet as reported in previous research.

Altered brain responses to emotional auditory stimuli in AVH subjects: an fMRI study

Purpose: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a frequently occurring phenomenon in which subjects hear verbal sounds in the absence of any external stimuli. The prevalence of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia has been revealed in many studies. Healthy subjects may also experience auditory hallucinations without accompanying psychological or neurological disorders, and in rare cases they seek clinical assistance for this emotionally disturbing condition. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural basis of emotional disturbance in auditory hallucinating subjects who do not suffer from any psychological or neurological disorder. Materials and Methods: Fourteen subjects suffering from auditory hallucinations and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited in this study. All participants underwent fMRI in two experimental sessions. In the first experimental session, all participants from both groups listened to pleasant auditory stimuli. In the second session, both groups listened to unpleasant auditory stimuli. The auditory stimuli were obtained from the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS). Results: Compared with the healthy control group, AVH subjects exhibited significantly increased activation in limbic, auditory, and frontal regions. Conclusion: Current results suggest that AVH may induce functional reorganization in emotion-related brain regions.

Analysis of the skin conductance and pupil signals for evaluation of emotional elicitation by images and sounds.

Many studies in the literature attempt recognition of emotions through the use of videos or images, but very few have explored the role that sounds have in evoking emotions. In this study we have devised an experimental protocol for elicitation of emotions by using, separately and jointly, images and sounds from the widely used International Affective Pictures System and International Affective Digital Sounds databases. During the experiments we have recorded the skin conductance and pupillary signals and processed them with the goal of extracting indices linked to the autonomic nervous system, thus revealing specific patterns of behavior depending on the different stimulation modalities. Our results show that skin conductance helps discriminate emotions along the arousal dimension, whereas features derived from the pupillary signal are able to discriminate different states along both valence and arousal dimensions. In particular, the pupillary diameter was found to be significantly greater at increasing arousal and during elicitation of negative emotions in the phases of viewing images and images with sounds. In the sound-only phase, on the other hand, the power calculated in the high and very high frequency bands of the pupillary diameter were significantly greater at higher valence (valence ratings > 5). Clinical relevance- This study demonstrates the ability of physiological signals to assess specific emotional states by providing different activation patterns depending on the stimulation through images, sounds and images with sounds. The approach has high clinical relevance as it could be extended to evaluate mood disorders (e.g. depression, bipolar disorders, or just stress), or to use physiological patterns found for sounds in order to study whether hearing aids can lead to increased emotional perception.

Induced negative arousal modulates the speed of visual working memory consolidation.

This study examines how induced negative arousal influences the consolidation of fragile sensory inputs into durable working memory (WM) representations. Participants performed a visual WM change detection task with different amounts of encoding time manipulated by random pattern masks inserted at different levels of memory-and-mask Stimulus Onset Asynchrony (SOA). Prior to the WM task, negative or neutral emotion was induced using audio clips from the International Affective Digital Sounds (IADS). Pupillometry was simultaneously recorded to provide an objective measure of induced arousal. Self-report measures of early-life stress (i.e., adverse childhood experiences) and current mood states (i.e., depressed mood and anxious feeling) were also collected as covariates. We find that participants initially remember a comparable number of WM items under a short memory-and-mask SOA of 100 ms across emotion conditions, but then encode more items into WM at a longer memory-and-mask SOA of 333 ms under induced negative arousal. These findings suggest that induced negative arousal speeds up WM consolidation. Yet, induced negative arousal does not seem to significantly affect participants' WM storage capacity estimated from a separate no mask condition. Furthermore, this emotional effect on WM consolidation speed is moderated by key affect-related individual differences. Participants who have greater pupil responses to negative IADS sounds or have more early-life stress show faster WM consolidation under induced negative arousal. Collectively, our findings reveal a critical role of phasic adrenergic responses in the rapid consolidation of visual WM content and identify potential moderators of this association. Does Affective Content of Sounds Affect Auditory Time-to-collision Estimation?

ABSTRACT In prior studies, mean estimates of time-to-collision (TTC) of approaching objects were shorter for threatening pictures (e.g., snakes) than non-threatening pictures (e.g., rabbits) but judgments of analogous auditory stimuli were not examined. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the affective content of an approaching object presented in the auditory domain can affect TTC estimates. Using simulations of sound-emitting objects selected from the International Affective Digitized Sound system, we compared TTC judgments of approaching objects that were threatening (hissing rattlesnake, buzzing bee, dentist drill) and control objects that had the same loudness and spectral properties but were unidentifiable. The snake sound, but not the drill or bee sounds, was judged as arriving earlier than the corresponding control sound, providing partial support that previously reported threat-related effects on TTC estimates for visual objects can also occur in the auditory domain.

Detection of Emotional Sensitivity Using fNIRS Based Dynamic Functional Connectivity.

In this study, we proposed an analytical framework to identify dynamic task-based functional connectivity (FC) features as new biomarkers of emotional sensitivity in nursing students, by using a combination of unsupervised and supervised machine learning techniques. The dynamic FC was measured by functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), and computed using a sliding window correlation (SWC) analysis. A k -means clustering technique was applied to derive four recurring connectivity states. The states were characterized by both graph theory and semi-metric analysis. Occurrence probability and state transition were extracted as dynamic FC network features, and a Random Forest (RF) classifier was implemented to detect emotional sensitivity. The proposed method was trialled on 39 nursing students and 19 registered nurses during decision-making, where we assumed registered nurses have developed strategies to cope with emotional sensitivity. Emotional stimuli were selected from International Affective Digitized Sound System (IADS) database. Experiment results showed that registered nurses demonstrated single dominant connectivity state of task-relevance, while nursing students displayed in two states and had higher level of task-irrelevant state connectivity. The results also showed that students were more susceptive to emotional stimuli, and the derived dynamic FC features provided a stronger discriminating power than heart rate variability (accuracy of 81.65% vs 71.03%) as biomarkers of emotional sensitivity. This work forms the first study to demonstrate the stability of fNIRS based dynamic FC states as a biomarker. In conclusion, the results support that the state distribution of dynamic FC could help reveal the differentiating factors between the nursing students and registered nurses during decision making, and it is anticipated that the biomarkers might be used as indicators when developing professional training related to emotional sensitivity.

FNIRS-based functional connectivity estimation using semi-metric analysis to study decision making by nursing students and registered nurses

This study aims to investigate the generalizability of the semi-metric analysis of the functional connectivity (FC) for functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) by applying it to detect the dichotomy in differential FC under affective and neutral emotional states in nursing students and registered nurses during decision making. The proposed method employs wavelet transform coherence to construct FC networks and explores semi-metric analysis to extract network redundancy features, which has not been considered in conventional fNIRS-based FC analyses. The trials of the proposed method were performed on 19 nursing students and 19 registered nurses via a decision-making task under different emotional states induced by affective and neutral emotional stimuli. The cognitive activities were recorded using fNIRS, and the emotional stimuli were adopted from the International Affective Digitized Sound System (IADS). The induction of emotional effects was validated by heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. The experimental results by the proposed method showed significant difference (FDR-adjusted p = 0.004) in the nursing students’ cognitive FC network under the two different emotional conditions, and the semi-metric percentage (SMP) of the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) was found to be significantly higher than the left PFC (FDR-adjusted p = 0.036). The benchmark method (a typical weighted graph theory analysis) gave no significant results. In essence, the results support that the semi-metric analysis can be generalized and extended to fNIRS-based functional connectivity estimation.

Supervised machine learning for audio emotion recognition

The field of Music Emotion Recognition has become and established research sub-domain of Music Information Retrieval. Less attention has been directed towards the counterpart domain of Audio Emotion Recognition, which focuses upon detection of emotional stimuli resulting from non-musical sound. By better understanding how sounds provoke emotional responses in an audience, it may be possible to enhance the work of sound designers. The work in this paper uses the International Affective Digital Sounds set. A total of 76 features are extracted from the sounds, spanning the time and frequency domains. The features are then subjected to an initial analysis to determine what level of similarity exists between pairs of features measured using Pearson’s r correlation coefficient before being used as inputs to a multiple regression model to determine their weighting and relative importance. The features are then used as the input to two machine learning approaches: regression modelling and artificial neural networks in order to determine their ability to predict the emotional dimensions of arousal and valence. It was found that a small number of strong correlations exist between the features and that a greater number of features contribute significantly to the predictive power of emotional valence, rather than arousal. Shallow neural networks perform significantly better than a range of regression models and the best performing networks were able to account for 64.4% of the variance in prediction of arousal and 65.4% in the case of valence. These findings are a major improvement over those encountered in the literature. Several extensions of this research are discussed, including work related to improving data sets as well as the modelling processes.

Asymmetrical characteristics of emotional responses to pictures and sounds: Evidence from pupillometry.

In daily life, our emotions are often elicited by a multimodal environment, mainly visual and auditory stimuli. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the symmetrical characteristics of emotional responses to pictures and sounds. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the relationship of attentional states to emotional unimodal stimuli (pictures or sounds) and emotional responses by measuring the pupil diameter, which reflects the emotional arousal associated with increased sympathetic activity. Our hypothesis was that the emotional responses to both the image and sound stimuli are symmetrical: emotion might be suppressed when attentional resources are allocated to another stimulus of the same modality as the emotional stimulus—such as a dot presented at the same time as an emotional image, and a beep sound presented at the same time as an emotional sound. In our two experiments, data for 24 participants were analyzed for a pupillary response. In experiment 1, we investigated the relationship of the attentional state with emotional visual stimuli (International Affective Picture System) and emotional responses by using pupillometry. We set four task conditions to modulate the attentional state (emotional task, no task, visual detection task, and auditory detection task). We observed that the velocity of pupillary dilation was faster during the presentation of emotionally arousing pictures compared to that of neutral ones, regardless of the valence of the pictures. Importantly, this effect was not dependent on the task condition. In experiment 2, we investigated the relationship of the attentional state with emotional auditory sounds (International Affective Digitized Sounds) and emotional responses. We observed a trend towards a significant interaction between the stimulus and the task conditions with regard to the velocity of pupillary dilation. In the emotional and auditory detection tasks, the velocity of pupillary dilation was faster with positive and neutral sounds than negative sounds. However, there were no significant differences between the no task and visual detection task conditions. Taken together, the current data reveal that different pupillary responses were elicited to emotional visual and auditory stimuli, at least in the point that there is no attentional effect to emotional responses to visual stimuli, despite both experiments being sufficiently controlled to be of symmetrical experimental design.

Pure Emotion-loaded Materials in the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS): A Study on Intensity Ratings in Chinese University Students

Background: Materials loaded with pure emotion are essential for basic and clinical research on sounds. The International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) is one of the widely-used emotional tools, but its materials are not clearly labeled with specific emotions. We have hypothesized that the IADS contains pure vectors of at least disgust, erotica (or erotism), fear, happiness, sadness and neutral emotions. Methods: We therefore selected 48 IADS sounds with saturate emotions, and invited 271 male and 353 female university students to rate the intensity of the emotions conveyed in each sound. The ratings were then analyzed with the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Results: Five factors were observed, namely: erotica, fear-sadness, happiness, neutrality, and disgust. Later, as two facets, sounds of fear-sadness were separated. Thirty sounds under six facets were finally retained with good model-fit indices and satisfactory factor internal reliabilities. Moreover, males scored significantly higher on erotica than females did. Conclusion: Our study purified a series of emotion-loaded IADS sounds, which might help clarify the pure effects of sound emotion in future research and clinical management of affective disorders.

Changing emotional visual and auditory memories: are modality-matched dual-tasks more effective?

ABSTRACT Clinical and laboratory studies have demonstrated that executing a demanding dual-task while recollecting emotional memories weakens the emotional intensity and vividness of these memories. While this approach is generally effective, there is room for improvement. According to multi-component working memory theories, the effectiveness of dual-tasks may be improved by loading specifically the same sensory modality of the emotional memories. So far, however, the evidence for this idea is mixed. In the current report, this idea was tested in a pilot study (N = 36) and a pre-registered experiment (N = 60) by exposing participants to pictures of the International Affective Picture System database and to sounds of the International Affective Digital Sounds database, thus creating single-modality emotional memories. Using a within-subjects design, participants had to recollect their memories of the sounds and pictures while executing a visually-demanding task (i.e. identifying visual letters), an auditory-demanding task (i.e. identifying auditory letters), or no task. Across both studies, we only found limited evidence for modality-specific effects of dual-tasks on single-modality emotional memories. We discuss the relevance of our findings for working memory theories of memory change and therapeutic practices.

Audio Feature Extraction for Effective Emotion Classification

Recently, there has been increasing interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning, where sentiment analysis has received considerable attention. In several studies, emotional states have been recognized using audio, text, or bio-signals that induce emotions, with audio being the most typical. There are several audio features, such as rhythm, dynamics, melody, harmony, and tonal color. The aim of our paper is finding critical audio features for effective emotion recognition. To do this, we select the existing audio features from elements of music, and investigate critical features using an iterative feature extraction method. For objective evaluation, the International Affective Digital Sounds system was used for training and testing. Crossvalidation evaluated the method in terms of classifier accuracy and computational complexity, and the results indicate the critical features for emotion classification.

Effects of seafarers’ emotion on human performance using bridge simulation

75–96% of maritime accidents are caused by human and organizational factors. Seafarers' emotion may degrade the effectivity of human behavior when tasks in onboard environment are complex and demanding. This study was concerned with the relationship between seafarers' emotion and occurring events in navigation. The Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) scale rating are used to investigate the occurrence and impact of seafarers' emotions on their performance using a bridge simulator. The study was conducted and described in two sections: emotion calibration and test recognition. In the first section, two types of emotions are induced by the sound clips of the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS), developed by the National Institute of Mental Health Center for the Study of Human Emotions. In the second section, emotion is recognized by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier, as well as self-rated after the crew-qualified test in a bridge simulator. The results indicate that SVM can identify the emotions by EEG feature extraction, with an accuracy of 77.55%. The results concerning officers' emotion in a bridge simulator test reveal that seafarers’ emotion in maritime operations, relating to events exposure, affects their behavior and decision-making. In addition, negative emotion has a higher likelihood of contributing to human errors than positive emotion. Less negative emotion is the most dangerous emotion state during navigation, followed by extreme positive emotion.

Lateralized Brainstem and Cervical Spinal Cord Responses to Aversive Sounds: A Spinal fMRI Study.

Previous research has delineated the networks of brain structures involved in the perception of emotional auditory stimuli. These include the amygdala, insula, and auditory cortices, as well as frontal-lobe, basal ganglia, and cerebellar structures involved in the planning and execution of motoric behaviors. The aim of the current research was to examine whether emotional sounds also influence activity in the brainstem and cervical spinal cord. Seventeen undergraduate participants completed a spinal functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study consisting of two fMRI runs. One run consisted of three one-minute blocks of aversive sounds taken from the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) stimulus set; these blocks were interleaved by 40-s rest periods. The other block consisted of emotionally neutral stimuli also drawn from the IADS. The results indicated a stark pattern of lateralization. Aversive sounds elicited greater activity than neutral sounds in the right midbrain and brainstem, and in right dorsal and ventral regions of the cervical spinal cord. Neutral stimuli, on the other hand, elicited less neural activity than aversive sounds overall; these responses were left lateralized and were found in the medial midbrain and the dorsal sensory regions of the cervical spinal cord. Together, these results demonstrate that aversive auditory stimuli elicit increased sensorimotor responses in brainstem and cervical spinal cord structures.

Affective auditory stimulus database: An expanded version of the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS-E).

Using appropriate stimuli to evoke emotions is especially important for researching emotion. Psychologists have provided several standardized affective stimulus databases-such as the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and the Nencki Affective Picture System (NAPS) as visual stimulus databases, as well as the International Affective Digitized Sounds (IADS) and the Montreal Affective Voices as auditory stimulus databases for emotional experiments. However, considering the limitations of the existing auditory stimulus database studies, research using auditory stimuli is relatively limited compared with the studies using visual stimuli. First, the number of sample sounds is limited, making it difficult to equate across emotional conditions and semantic categories. Second, some artificially created materials (music or human voice) may fail to accurately drive the intended emotional processes. Our principal aim was to expand existing auditory affective sample database to sufficiently cover natural sounds. We asked 207 participants to rate 935 sounds (including the sounds from the IADS-2) using the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) and three basic-emotion rating scales. The results showed that emotions in sounds can be distinguished on the affective rating scales, and the stability of the evaluations of sounds revealed that we have successfully provided a larger corpus of natural, emotionally evocative auditory stimuli, covering a wide range of semantic categories. Our expanded, standardized sound sample database may promote a wide range of research in auditory systems and the possible interactions with other sensory modalities, encouraging direct reliable comparisons of outcomes from different researchers in the field of psychology.

Attenuation of Positive Valence in Ratings of Affective Sounds by Tinnitus Patients.

Affective processing appears to be altered in tinnitus, and the condition is to a large extent characterized by the emotional reaction to the phantom sound. Psychophysiological models of tinnitus and supporting brain imaging studies have suggested a role for the limbic system in the emergence and maintenance of tinnitus. It is not clear whether the tinnitus-related changes in these systems are specific for tinnitus only, or whether they affect emotional processing more generally. In this study, we aimed to quantify possible deviations in affective processing in tinnitus patients by behavioral and physiological measures. Tinnitus patients rated the valence and arousal of sounds from the International Affective Digitized Sounds database. Sounds were chosen based on the normative valence ratings, that is, negative, neutral, or positive. The individual autonomic response was measured simultaneously with pupillometry. We found that the subjective ratings of the sounds by tinnitus patients differed significantly from the normative ratings. The difference was most pronounced for positive sounds, where sounds were rated lower on both valence and arousal scales. Negative and neutral sounds were rated differently only for arousal. Pupil measurements paralleled the behavioral results, showing a dampened response to positive sounds. Taken together, our findings suggest that affective processing is altered in tinnitus patients. The results are in line with earlier studies in depressed patients, which have provided evidence in favor of the so-called positive attenuation hypothesis of depression. Thus, the current results highlight the close link between tinnitus and depression.

Mismatch negativity impairment is associated with deficits in identifying real-world environmental sounds in schizophrenia

BackgroundPatients with schizophrenia (SZ) have impairments in processing auditory information that have been linked to deficits in cognitive and psychosocial functioning. Dysfunction in auditory sensory processing in SZ has been indexed by mismatch negativity (MMN), an event-related potential evoked by a rare, deviant stimulus embedded within a sequence of identical standard stimuli. Although MMN deficits in SZ have been studied extensively, relatively little is known about how these deficits relate to accurately identifying real-world, ecologically-salient sounds. MethodsMMN was assessed in SZ patients (n=21) and non-psychiatric comparison subjects (NCS; n=16). Participants were also assessed in their ability to identify common environmental sounds using a subset of 80 sound clips from the International Affective Digitized Sounds 2nd Ed collection. ResultsSZ patients made significantly more errors in environmental sound identification (p<0.001, d=0.86) and showed significantly reduced MMN amplitude deficits in MMN compared to NCS (p<0.01, d=0.97). In SZ patients, MMN deficits were associated with significantly greater environmental sound identification errors (r=0.61, p<0.01). ConclusionsImpairments in early auditory information processing in schizophrenia account for significant proportions of variance in the ability to identify real-world, functionally relevant environmental sounds. This study supports the view that interventions targeting deficits in low-level auditory sensory processing may also impact more complex cognitive brain processes relevant to psychosocial disability.
