14th International Conference on Quasicrystals (ICQ14)

The 14th International Conference on Quasicrystals (ICQ14) took place in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, during May 26 – 31, 2019. This conference was a continuation of the series of conferences started in Les Houches, France (1986) and continued in Beijing, China (1987), Vista-Hermosa, Mexico (1989), St. Louis, USA (1992), Avignon, France (1995), Tokyo, Japan (1997), Stuttgart, Germany (1999), Bangalore, India (2002), Ames, USA (2005), Zürich, Switzerland (2008), Sapporo, Japan (2010), Cracow, Poland (2013), and ICQ13 Kathmandu, Nepal (2016). The conference has provided an opportunity to present and learn the latest results in the fields of quasicrystals, complex metallic alloys and related topics (aperiodic soft matter, metallic glasses, high-entropy alloys, etc.). It is our truly pleasure to present the 2017 BASIC proceeding. The conference was successfully organized by Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia in collaboration with Commission for Basic Science-Indonesian Academy of Sciences (KIPD-AIPI) on 18–19 August 2017. The event provides a network for academics and researchers from the fields of mathematics and natural sciences to share their ideas and experiences, update themselves with the latest developments on basic and applied research, also encourage collaboration between researchers or institutions that can enhance the synergy of basic research with applied research to advances in science and technology. The 2017 BASIC event conducted in conjunction with the 2nd International Science and Mathematics in Academics Research Talks 2017 (2nd ISMART 2017).The contribution of the keynote and invited speakers at the morning plenary sessions was greatly appreciated. They have made their best efforts to deliver their ideas and share knowledge with the participants. No less than 160 contributors have presented their papers - all of which maintain the high promise suggested by the abstract. This conference proceeding volume consists of rigorously selected papers, which have been accepted, after undergoing a peer-review process, conducted by expertise reviewers.Our in-depth appreciation goes to our colleagues on the international advisory board, and the scientific committee for all efforts in selecting abstracts, papers and sharing their expert networks, to the experts in reviewing the paper and to the editorial teams (substantive, language and technical) in providing camera-ready version to send to the publisher. Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews (PRIOR): a protocol for development of a reporting guideline for overviews of reviews of healthcare interventions

BackgroundOverviews of reviews (i.e., overviews) compile information from multiple systematic reviews to provide a single synthesis of relevant evidence for healthcare decision-making. Despite their increasing popularity, there are currently no systematically developed reporting guidelines for overviews. This is problematic because the reporting of published overviews varies considerably and is often substandard. Our objective is to use explicit, systematic, and transparent methods to develop an evidence-based and agreement-based reporting guideline for overviews of reviews of healthcare interventions (PRIOR, Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews).MethodsWe will develop the PRIOR reporting guideline in four stages, using established methods for developing reporting guidelines in health research. First, we will establish an international and multidisciplinary expert advisory board that will oversee the conduct of the project and provide methodological support. Second, we will use the results of comprehensive literature reviews to develop a list of prospective checklist items for the reporting guideline. Third, we will use a modified Delphi exercise to achieve a high level of expert agreement on the list of items to be included in the PRIOR reporting guideline. We will identify and recruit a group of up to 100 international experts who will provide input into the guideline in three Delphi rounds: the first two rounds will occur via online survey, and the third round will occur during a smaller (8 to 10 participants) in-person meeting that will use a nominal group technique. Fourth, we will produce and publish the PRIOR reporting guideline.DiscussionA systematically developed reporting guideline for overviews could help to improve the accuracy, completeness, and transparency of overviews. This, in turn, could help maximize the value and impact of overviews by allowing more efficient interpretation and use of their research findings.

The 19th International Union of Materials Research Societies – International Conference in Asia (IUMRS-ICA) 2018 was held in Bali on 30 October – 2 November 2018. The main theme of IUMRS-ICA 2018 is “Innovation of Advanced Material for Green Technology and Sustainable Development”. The conference is organized by Materials Research Society-Indonesia (MRS-INA) with the aim to provide international forum for presenting scientific results in the field of materials science by scientists, academicians, industries and government from national, as well as regional and international.The pupose of the IUMRS-ICA 2018 is to gather Indonesian Materials Researchers, and to promote international collaboration and cooperation among scientists and academia from regional and developed countries. This should be accomplished by presence of invited world-class speakers for the scientific program. In this event, the fundamentals, innovations and industrial applications of Materials Sciences and Technology will be discussed.The Committee received over 200 scientific articles showing a diverse and stimulating program, from more than 40 national and international institutions, covering 20 countries (UK, Turkey, Taiwan, Czechia, Pakistan, India, Austria, Germany, Ethiopia, Egypt, USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Bangladesh, China, Australia, Korea and Indonesia). The publication committees were responsible for arranging approximately 150 full peer review of the manuscripts that will appear in several media of international publications, such as Progress in Natural Science: Materials International, IONICS, Journal of Atom Indonesia, Indonesian Journal of Materials Sciences as well as the IOP Conference Proceedings. Introduction

This issue of Journal of Physics: Conference Series includes 31 articles submitted by the participants of the XLVI International Zvenigorod Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion (March 18-22, 2019). The conference is named after the town of Zvenigorod, Moscow region, where it has been held annually for 46 years. More than 600 scientists took part in the conference this year. The presented articles showcase a wide range of topical issues in the field of plasma physics that were discussed at the conference.Leading foreign scientists have participated in Zvenigorod conferences from the very first time they were organized. They were invited by the conference organizers to give talks on the challenging problems of plasma physics. By now several dozen of foreign scientists from the USA, Europe, and Japan take part in the conference annually. They represent approximately 30 leading research centers working in different fields of plasma physics.Nowadays, the conference has expanded to include a large number of topics. It includes sessions on the magnetic confinement of high-temperature plasma, inertial fusion, processes in low-temperature plasma, physical principles of plasma and beam technologies, and topical issues of the ITER project. About 90 Russian research centers are usually represented at the conference. Among them are institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, research centers of Russian universities, institutes of the State Corporation ROSATOM, and other scientific organizations of the Russian Federation.The International Advisory Board of the International Zvenigorod Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion consists of the leading scientists from around the world working in the field of plasma physics. 3rd MRS-id Meeting is the continuation of successful biannual series including 1st MRS-id Meeting in Bali (2014) and 2nd MRS-id Meeting in Bandung (2016) organized by Materials Research Society of Indonesia (MRS-id). The conference was held on July 31st to 2 August 2nd, 2018 at Aston Denpasar Hotel & Convention Center, Bali, Indonesia. The theme of current meeting is “Materials for Energy and Environment Sustainability”. The focus of the MRS-id meeting is to promote materials science and technology in Indonesia, regional area (such as ASEAN and Asia) as well as global. DiSSCo as a New Regional Model for Scientific Collections in Europe

European Natural Science Collections (NSC) are part of the global natural and cultural capital and represent 80% of the world bio-and geo-diversity. Data derived from these collections underpin thousands of scholarly publications and official reports (used to support legislative and regulatory processes relating to health, food, security, sustainability and environmental change) and let to inventions and products that today play an important role in our bio-economy. In the last decades, the research practice in natural sciences changed dramatically. Advances in digital, genomic and information technologies enable natural science collections to provide new insights but also ask for changing the current operational and business models of individual collections held at local natural history museums and universities. A new business model that provides unified access to collection objects and all scientific data derived from them. Although aggregating infrastructures like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, GenBank and Catalogue of Life now successfully aggregate data on specific data classes, the landscape remains fragmented with limited capacity to bring together this information in a systematic and robust manner and with scattered access to the physical objects. The Distributed System of Scientific Collections (DiSSCo) represents a pan-European initiative, and the largest ever agreement of natural science museums, to jointly address the fragmentation of European collections. DiSSCo is unifying European natural science collections into a coherent new research infrastructure, able to provide bio- and geo-diversity data at the scale, form and precision required by a multi-disciplinary user base in science. DiSSCo is harmonising digitisation, curation and publication processes and workflows across the scientific collections in Europe and enables linking of occurrence, genomic, chemical and morphological data classes as well as publications and experts to the physical object. In this paper we will present the socio-cultural and governance aspects of this research infrastructure. DiSSCo is receiving political support from 11 countries in Europe and will gradually change its funding model from institutional to national funding, with temporary funding from the EC to support the preparation and development. Solutions to achieve large scale digitisation are currently designed in the EC funded ICEDIG project to underpin the future large scale digitisation carried out by the countries. Unified virtual (digitisation on demand) and transnational physical access to the collections is over the next four years being developed in the EC funded SYNTHESYS+ project. The governance of DiSSCo is designed to gradually change from a steering committee composed of a few large natural history museums contributing in cash to initiate the development into a legal entity in which national consortia are represented, with a central coordination office for daily management. Each country individually decides how its entities (scientific collection facilities, research councils, governmental bodies) are organised in their national consortium. A stakeholder and user forum, Scientific Advisory Board and International Advisory Board will ensure that DiSSCo will be functional in enabling science across disciplines and within the international landscape of infrastructures. Training and short scientific missions are being developed in the MOBILISE COST Action to build capacity in FAIR data production, publication and usage of scientific collection-derived data in Europe and to initiate the socio-cultural changes needed in the collection-holding institutes. A Helpdesk is being constructed in the SYNTHESYS+ and DiSSCo Prepare projects to further facilitate the use and scientific use cases have been collected in ICEDIG to develop and facilitate e-services tailored to scientific needs.

A synthesis of evidence for the effects of interventions to conserve peatland vegetation: overview and critical discussion

Peatlands are valuable but threatened ecosystems. Intervention to tackle direct threats is often necessary, but should be informed by scientific evidence to ensure it is effective and efficient. Here we discuss a recent synthesis of evidence for the effects of interventions to conserve peatland vegetation - a fundamental component of healthy, functioning peatland ecosystems. The synthesis is unique in its broad scope (global evidence for a comprehensive list of 125 interventions) and practitioner-focused outputs (short narrative summaries in plain English, integrated into a searchable online database). Systematic literature searches, supplemented by recommendations from an international advisory board, identified 162 publications containing 296 distinct tests of 66 of the interventions. Most of the articles studied open bogs or fens in Europe or North America. Only 36 interventions were supported by sufficient evidence to assess their overall effectiveness. Most of these interventions (85 %) had positive effects, overall, on peatland vegetation - although this figure is likely to have been inflated by publication bias. We discuss how to use the synthesis, critically, to inform conservation decisions. Reflecting on the content of the synthesis we make suggestions for the future of peatland conservation, from monitoring over appropriate timeframes to routinely publishing results to build up the evidence base.

2nd International Conference on Current Progress in Functional Materials 2017

Preface from the editorsThe Second International Symposium on Current Progress in Functional Material 2017 (2nd ISCPFM 2017) held in Bali on November 8-9, 2017 with the theme of “Functional Materials for Energy and Environment Applications”. The theme was selected based on the society’s need for new and modified materials for energy applications and reducing environmental problems. This symposium can become a forum for scientists, to meet, discuss, collaborate and build functional material research networks.Succeeding the first ISCPFM, which also conducted in Bali in 2016, the second symposium in 2017 held by welcoming prominent scientists from Japan, Taiwan, China and Indonesia as keynote speakers and invited speakers to share their valuable experiences during the plenary session. Participants who attended the symposium were almost ninety. This number increased significantly from last year’s event, which showed that the event began to be recognised and noticed by functional material researchers and one day it will become the aim for researchers in disseminating the latest results in functional material research.This proceeding will contain selected papers, which had been presented and discussed during the 2nd ISCPFM event. Sixty-three papers had accepted for publishing in this proceeding after going through the review process by peer-reviewers. Papers with the subject of nano and 2D materials are the most widely published papers in this proceeding, followed by papers with the subject of metal oxide and composite materials, then several papers with ceramics and biomaterials topics and some papers that reported the results in computational and simulation of functional material.On this occasion, we would also like to thank our colleagues on the international advisory board and the scientific committee who had assisted in conducting symposium and publishing the proceedings including the abstract selection, the manuscript selection and the reviewer’s selection processes. We are also very grateful for the excellent cooperation between the substantive editorial team, the technical editor team, the language editorial team and the supporting editorial team in preparing the camera-ready version of the manuscript files before sending to the publisher. Editorial A strong Editorial Board is essential to the success of any academic journal, especially one (such as this) with a broad remit spanning several disciplines and distinct periods. Comprising highly respected scholars, and supported by an International Advisory Board, the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy plays an important role. Through regular meetings and correspondence with the editors and Publication Office staff, its members guide strategic thinking on the direction and promotion of the journal, and help with the acquisition of high-quality material, both by actively promoting it as a venue for publication and by their association with it. Their wide-ranging and complementary expertise in the journal’s core subject areas, often combined with extensive experience as editors of both journals and books, ensures that the editors of Proceedings are in the comfortable position of having access to ready expert advice on, for example, such matters as identifying suitable readers for a paper, and on guiding it through the peer review and editorial process. Up to now the Editorial Board had been renewed incrementally through invitation. When a position was due to become vacant, the board discussed what areas of expertise needed to be strengthened and sought to identify who would best be placed to do so. Individuals were nominated by the board whose recommendations were then considered the Academy’s Publications Committee. While this method has worked well, there is a lot to be said for casting the net wider. It can be difficult for Editorial Board members to judge on availability and there is always the danger that candidates who may have a lot to contribute get overlooked inadvertently. For these reasons the board of Proceedings readily embraced the Academy’s new policy of issuing Open Calls when the membership of editorial boards requires renewal. The first call was issued earlier this year with a deadline for expressions of interest in July. It outlined the journal’s remit, highlighted the forthcoming thematic issue on Climate and Society, and the ­ importance of expertise in helping further to enhance the journal’s impact factor. A large number of submissions were received from highly qualified individuals , far more in fact than the places available at this time. The interest shown by leading scholars with a range of disciplinary specialisms is very heartening and attests to the high standing of the journal both nationally and internationally . The selection process will, of course, be guided by the need to maintain the balance in terms of disciplines and periods as this is essential for the board to fulfil its core functions. We hope that future calls will attract similar interest, including from the individuals who could not be accommodated on this occasion , and we thank them all sincerely for their responses. The quality of contributions to the current volume is another illustration of the journal’s status as a leading outlet for research in Irish archaeology, history, literature and cognate disciplines. Gandois and colleagues demonstrate that some of the copper axe-ingots produced in southwest Ireland at the start of the Bronze Age were traded along the Atlantic seaboard of north-west France, a discovery with wide-ranging implications for our understanding of prehistoric connections between these regions. There follows three papers on medieval­ ecclesiastical matters, one by a historian and two by archaeologists. Against the background of similar processes in Britain and the Continent, Paul MacCotter reviews the emergence of the parish system in Ireland and argues that aspects of the system of pastoral care established by AD 1100 survived in the high medieval parish structure, especially in areas that remained in Gaelic hands. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick considers the character of cathedral-centred communities in Gaelic areas and argues that the urban–rural paradigm that tends to dominate interpretations of such sites is unhelpful because their development was governed by different values.
