Self-efficacy mediates the impact of locus of control on the coping style of junior high school students

We examined the impact of locus of control on coping style, with a primary focus on confirmation of the mediating role of self-efficacy, among a sample of 421 junior high school students. Participants completed the Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. The results revealed that both locus of control and self-efficacy were significantly correlated with coping style. Structural equation modeling indicated that self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of locus of control on coping style. These findings extend prior research and shed light on how locus of control influences coping style.

The relationship between locus of control and pre-competitive anxiety in highly trained soccer players.

Previous studies have not considered the potential association between locus of control and precompetitive anxiety in elite soccer players. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study examined The prediction of locus of control on precompetitive anxiety in highly trained cadet soccer players. Based on a literature review, our research question was: can the locus of control be considered as an explanatory element of precompetitive anxiety? Thirty-five Tunisian highly trained soccer players licensed from two regional soccer clubs aged between 15 and 16 years participated in the resent study. All participants were evaluated using the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) and the Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. The relationship between measures of anxiety, self-confidence and the locus of control scores were analyzed using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient. Further, multiple linear stepwise multiple regression models were calculated to determine the most robust predictors of the locus of control. Based on our findings, the regression analysis explains up to 21.3% of the total variation of our independent variable (locus of control) and explains only 21.3% of the variability of our dependent variable somatic anxiety. Furthermore, locus of control explains 61.9% of the variability in self-confidence. The locus of control can be used for the detection and selection of young athletic talent to identify individuals with the best psychological aptitude to cope with psychological problems related to sports performance. Preparing highly trained soccer players on how to deal with their anxiety could prevent them from becoming overwhelmed when they feel powerless to change their situation during competition.

DISPOSITIONAL FACTORS OF PROPENSITY TO PROCRASTINATION IN YOUTH

The article deals with the theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of procrastination and its interpretation in psychology and the empirical study of the main factors of the manifestations of procrastination in youth under the conditions of distance learning. The research used a set of complementary methods and techniques: theoretical: analysis, synthesis, and generalization of scientists' views on procrastination; empirical: "General Procrastination Scale (GPS), Clarry H. Lay", "Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, ZTPI”, self-organization of activity questionnaire (OSD), "Maslach Burnout Inventory", (MВI) K. Maslach, S. Jackson, "Test of Self-Conscious Affect" (TOSCA) J.P. Tangney, "Capacity for self-management" by M. Peysakhov, “Rotter’s Internal-External Locus of Control Scale”, mathematical statistics: descriptive statistics, correlation analysis (Spearman's rho); factor analysis (Principal components). It is noted that scientists rightly draw attention to the fact that procrastination can refer not only to delaying the start of action but also to any stage of its implementation, and the least agreed upon in science are questions about the irrationality and awareness of procrastination and the degree of importance of the task postponed for later. It is shown that procrastination is an ambiguously negative phenomenon: 1) it is possible to postpone matters for later with a strategic goal: to use the time for thorough preparation for its implementation; 2) "for later" is not the same as "untimely" or "not to fulfill"; 3) not important tasks are postponed more often, but tasks imposed on the executor from the outside, but subjectively uninteresting to him. According to the results of our research, we can assume that a person prone to procrastination: burns out faster; is external; with a poorly developed ability to self-regulate in general and its components in particular; does not know how to structure time adequately; with no plans for the future; with insufficient ability to self-manage; does not feel guilty for his inactivity, and is not proud of himself. It is concluded that the most researched in psychology is academic procrastination, while general procrastination is currently rarely the object of investigation; a complete, justifiable, and acceptable for most scholars studying the problem of procrastination understanding of procrastination that takes into account its various aspects is still under development.

A Study of the Relationship between Locus of Control and Self-monitoring to Resilience in Students

A person may experience both positive and negative stress, which is mainly associated with a wide range of negative consequences, such as a decrease in well-being, an increase in diseases, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression disorders. High stress in a person does not always develop these negative results. According to latest researches and studies, most people are exposed to stress, and developing resilence is the main factor in order to cope with the unpredictable environment (Troy & Mauss, 2011). The ability to disengage from negative stimuli and feelings is an important protective factor against long-term negative results. Resilience represents the ability of a person to cope with life's difficulties and is a multidimensional characteristic which varies by context, age, gender, culture, and individual life (Felicia et al., 2021). According to contemporary approaches, resilience is a personal trait that helps a person to adapt and cope with traumatic experience. Psychological component of resilience means that a person maintains psychological health without any trauma and stressors, .while behavioral component of resilience means maintenance of self-effectiveness and aspiration towards goals (Kamushadze, 2021). One of the components of resilience at the individual level is identified as self-control, which is an aspect of behavior control and is often viewed as willpower and the ability to control impulses. In a psychological sense, self-control refers to emotions and the initiation or modification of emotional reactions through cognitive processes. The locus of control is also considered to be a factor that has a significant influence on the formation of resilience. According to Rotter, people differ from each other according to the localization of control over events. This difference can be described as internal and external poles. Internal people believe that everything that happens in their lives depends only on their personal qualities, purposefulness, abilities, and competence. External people strongly believe that their lives are controlled by outside forces, and their success or failure is the fault of randomness, other people, and so on., This paper therefore focuses on determining the relationship between the locus of control and self-monitoring to resilience among undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E Scale), Self – Monitoring Scale, and Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) were used in this study. Based on the analysis of the results, it was revealed that self-ownership is related to resilience and locus of control, and the latter is negatively related to resilience. Differences were analyzed by demographic characteristics.

Dependence Severity, Locus of Control, and Readiness to Change in Male Alcoholic Clients: A Correlational Study

Objectives: To assess the level of dependence severity, locus of control, and readiness to change in male alcohol clients and measure the correlation between dependence with a locus of control and readiness to change.
 Methodology: A descriptive correlational design was conducted in the substance use rehabilitation centers at psychiatric teaching hospitals in Baghdad city from November /2021 to May 2022. The instrument of the study was designed by using sociodemographic, the clinical characteristics of the client, the Short-form Alcohol Dependence Data Questionnaire (SADD), Drinking Related Internal-External Locus of Control Scale: (DRIE), and the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES). The data was collected through the use of a semi-structured form and analyzed by Social Package for Statistical Sciences SPSS version 26.0
 Results: The study showed a highly significant difference in dependence severity with an internal and external locus of control at p-value= .001, a significant reverse relationship between readiness to change among clients with regard to the duration of alcohol use at p-value= .008, and amount of alcohol use per day at p-value=.009. A significant relationship between readiness to change and clients’ level of education, and age of alcoholic clients’ is significant at p-value= .005.and significant relationship between locus of control and monthly income.
 Conclusions: Alcoholic male clients have a moderate dependence severity of alcohol and moderate external locus of control, low internal locus of control, and high readiness to change.
 Recommendations: Further research should be conducted on AUD, activating the media’s role to increase community awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol and the possible treatment methods.

PERSONAL FACTORS OF STUDENTS' ACADEMIC PROCRASTINATION IN CONDITIONS OF USING DISTANCE LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

Abstract. Objective. This research was conducted to to theoretically analyse and empirically investigate the personal factors of students' academic procrastination in the context of distance learning technologies.
 Methods. The subjects were 63 students from different faculties and educational institutions, aged from 17 to 45, who are using distance learning technologies. Among them 55 females and 7 males. Data were gathered through C. Lay's General Procrastination Scale (adapted by T. Yu. Yudyeyeva), «The reasons for the personal tendency to delay tasks» (M. S. Dvornyk), «Scale of Academic Motivation» (T. O. Hordyeyeva, O. A. Sychov, Ye. M. Osin), 5PFQ (adapted by A. B. Khromov), J. Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (adapted by A. Syrtsova), Self-Change Potential questionnaire (V. R. Manukyan, I. R. Murtazina, N. V. Hrishyna) and were analyzed by the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, the Mann–Whitney U test and k-means cluster analysis.
 Results. The results showed that there was a meaningful and negative relation between academic procrastination and «conscientiousness», future orientation, belief in possibility of self-change as a factor of self-change potential. Besides, a meaningful and positive relation was observed between academic procrastination and «neuroticism», negative past orientation, extrinsic motivation.
 Conclusion. The results of the research can be recommended for application in the practical work of psychologists, in psychology of personality, creative psychology, psychology of health and social psychology. It also can be useful in the practice of correction and counseling psychology.
 The results of the study can be used to develop programs of reducing and prevention of students' academic procrastination in the context of distance learning technologies.

Locus of Control as a Mediator of the Relationships Between Motivational Systems and Trait Anxiety.

The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory, first proposed by Gray and later revised, describes three motivational systems: Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS), Behavioral Activation System (BAS), and Fight-Flight-Freeze System (FFFS). Studies have shown that high BIS and FFFS activation are positively related to anxiety symptoms, yet the relationship between BAS and anxiety remains unclear. Research data have also suggested that anxiety symptoms occur with the loss of perceived control. Thus, although studies on the direct effect of locus of control (LOC) on trait anxiety have accumulated for many years, the issue of how LOC may mediate the relationship between BIS/BAS/FFFS sensitivity and anxiety has not been addressed. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of LOC orientation on trait anxiety among young adults in association with these three motivational systems. Cross-sectional data were obtained from 422 volunteers. The BIS/BAS Scale, Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Rotter's Internal-External LOC Scale were applied. A series of mediation analyses were performed to estimate total, indirect, and direct effects. The results showed that BIS and FFFS positively predicted trait anxiety. In addition, LOC positively predicted trait anxiety and BIS. The results of the mediation analyses indicated that LOC functioned as a partial mediator between BIS and trait anxiety. This finding revealed that a high BIS level, one of the motivational systems, was associated with external LOC, which in turn contributed to reporting high trait anxiety in young adults. Hence, BIS and external LOC orientation could be suggested as risk factors for trait anxiety. As the external LOC orientation of individuals with high punishment sensitivity increased, their trait anxiety levels also increased. Therefore, it was suggested that it might be useful to be aware that LOC orientations of individuals with BIS sensitivity may pose a risk for trait anxiety.

The Interface Between Metacognitive Strategy Training and Locus of Control in Developing EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension Skill

This study investigated the effects of metacognitive listening strategy instruction (MLSI) and learners’ locus of control orientation on the listening comprehension of EFL learners. 100 EFL students at the University of Zanjan and Imam Khomeini International University of Qazvin were randomly chosen. The participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (N = 50) and a control group (N = 50). The experimental group received 10 weeks of treatment including 10 sessions of metacognitive listening strategy training. Both groups took the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire and Rotter’s Internal-External Locus of Control Scale before the treatment sessions. Then, they took the listening pre-test and after the treatment, the listening post-test was administered and the required data was obtained. The findings revealed that MLSI had a significant impact on the learners’ listening comprehension for the learners with internal LoC; However, external LoC did not have any significant moderating effect on listening comprehension ability. Pedagogical implications are suggested for an EFL teaching/learning context.

External Locus of Control and Elementary Teachers' Subjective Wellbeing: Self-efficacy As a Mediator

In this study I explored the relationships among the locus of control, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being (SWB) of elementary school teachers in China, with a focus on the mediating effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between external locus of control and SWB. A survey was conducted with 305 elementary school teachers using the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and SWB measurements. External locus of control was found to be negatively correlated with SWB, and selfefficacy was positively correlated with SWB. Structural equation modeling analysis showed that self-efficacy partially mediated the effect of external locus of control on SWB, with the indirect effect accounting for 36.34% of the total explained variance. Promoting a sense of control and self-efficacy may be effective in improving elementary school teachers' SWB.

WORK LIFE BALANCE WITHIN THE PRIVATE SECTOR: THE PREDICTIVE ROLES OF SOCIAL SUPPORT AND LOCUS OF CONTROL

The study investigated social support and locus of control as predictors of work life balance among workers. One hundred and forty one (141) workers from Stine Rice Industry, Amichi served as participants in the study, comprising 90 males (66.08%) and 51 females (33.92%). Their age ranged between 18 – 50 years with a mean age of 30.04 years and standard deviation of 8.1 years. The participants were selected using systematic and convenient sampling technique. Fisher's work life balance Scale (Fisher, 2001), Rotter internal-external locus of control scale 1966 (Rotter, 1966), and multidimensional scale of perceived social support (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet & Farley, 1988) was used for data collection. The design adopted in the research is a correlational design. Based on this, Multiple Linear Regression was adopted as the statistical tool for data analysis using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Three hypotheses were tested, and the results revealed that the first hypothesis which stated that social support would significantly predict work life balance among workers was accepted at (p>.05, t=2.161). The second hypothesis which stated that locus of control would significantly predict work life balance among workers was also accepted at (p>.05, t=-6.02). The third hypothesis which stated that social support and locus of control would jointly predict work life balance among workers was accepted at F(2,138)=24.214, p<.05 level of significant. Thus, based on the findings of this study, the researchers recommended that organizations should provide mechanisms that will provide support for workers in order to balance their work lives, should provide human resource initiatives that will enhance their productivity level. Also, the needs of employees are increasing owing to the many roles they play outside the work and family environment; managers are to be understanding when employees make requests to meet these needs. Limitations and implications of the study were also discussed.

The relationship between sports manager behaviour and locus of control: An application on students of faculties of sport sciences

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the locus of control and the sports manager behavior levels of the students studying in the department of sports management of the faculty of sport sciences. The study was conducted by the correlational survey method, one of the quantitative research designs. Population of the study consists of students studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades in the departments of sports management of the faculties of sport sciences from various state and private universities. The sample of the study conducted using the nonprobability sampling method consists of 718 sports management students (male = 452, female = 266). In the study, data were collected with the sports manager behavior scale and the internal-external locus of control scale. Data were analyzed by means of analysis of normality, t-test, one-way Anova test and multiple regression tests. The study found a significant difference between students' gender, grade levels, university type and sports manager behaviors. There was no significant effect of internal-external locus of control levels on sports manager behaviors. In conclusion, it was found that the students' sport manager behavior and internal-external locus of control levels were quite high, and female students have higher sports manager behavior levels compared to male students, and the higher the level of grade, the higher the levels of sports manager behavior.

The Effects of Self-Efficacy and Locus of Control on Cyberbully/Victim Status in Adolescents

PurposeThis study adopted a descriptive and correlational investigation of the effect of self-efficacy and locus of control on becoming a cyberbully and victim in adolescents. Design and methodsData were collected through the Socio-Demographic Data Collection Form, Middle School Self-Efficacy Scale, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, and Cyberbully/Victim Scale. Whether self-efficacy and locus of control levels predicted becoming a cyberbully and victim was analyzed through multiple linear regression analysis. ResultsThis study found that the sub-dimensions of self-efficacy and locus of control scales significantly predicted cyberbully and victim becoming. Self-efficacy and locus of control explained 16.8% and 12.8% of the variance in becoming a cyberbully, respectively. The sub-dimension of protective healthcare and family relationships significantly predicted the becoming of both a cyberbully and a cyber victim. Furthermore, it predicted that peer relationships and interpersonal predicted cyberbully status (p < 0.05). ConclusionsThis study found that self-efficacy and locus of control significantly affected the becoming of a cyberbully and victim. Practice implicationsInterventional studies involving self-efficacy and locus of control to prevent cyberbullying are recommended.

The Relationship between the Sports Manager Behavior and Locus of Control of Students Taking Sports Management Education

The study aims to determine the degree to which sports managers show behaviors related to management processes and to what extent the focus of control of sports managers affects these behaviors, to increase the performance of sports managers. The universe of the research consists of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year students studying at the Department of Sports Management of Uşak University. The sample of the study, which was conducted with the non-probabilistic sampling method, in which 95% confidence level and 5% margin of error were used, consisted of 231 students, male = 155, female = 76. “Sports Manager Behavior Scale” and “Internal-External Locus of Control Scale” were used in the study. In general, it was determined that the students participating in the research have a very high level of sports manager behavior and internal-External Locus of Control. 95.7% of the students have internal control and 4.3% have an external locus of control.

The Role of Childhood Traumas, Emotional Self-Efficacy and Internal-External Locus of Control in Predicting Psychological Resilience

Psychological resilience is a broad concept that can be evaluated in the context of past experiences, emotional experiences and control mechanisms shaped by internal or external factors. In this study, the role of childhood traumas, emotional self-efficacy and the internal-external locus of control were investigated in predicting psychological resilience. The study included a total of 291 participants (208 females and 83 males) with average age of 20.29 (SD = 2.59). Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Emotional Self-Efficacy Scale, Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and Psychological Resilience Scale were used to collect data from participants. As a result of simple linear regression analysis, childhood traumas experiences, emotional self-efficacy and internal locus of control predicted resilience significantly among university students. Also, there was significant positive relationship between emotional self-efficacy, locus of control and resilience. On the other hand, resilience and childhood traumas were correlated negatively. The findings of the study are discussed at the end. The protective factors related to psychological resilience should be considered in a versatile way to understand its fundamental structure.

Psychosomatic Tendencies, Coping Styles and Locus of Control Among Young Adults

It is really difficult to live in a society in which the human contact is decreasing each day, and where stressful situations become unavoidable. In order to be healthy and have a healthy lifestyle, the coping style plays a huge role. Witnessing this situation every day, the aim of this research is to investigate the connection among psychosomatic tendencies, different coping styles and locus of control in young adults, aged from 24 to 34 years, in the Republic of North Macedonia. The evaluated sample consists of 187 (M=47; F=140) participants, randomly selected, who accepted to be the part of the research by filling in the on-line questionnaires, delivered through Google forms. The short demographic questionnaire and three psychological instruments were used: Cybernetic Battery of Conjunctive tests KON-6, CISS-21 (Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations), and Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (I-E). Spearman's correlation was used in order to check and approve the connectedness among psychosomatic tendencies, coping styles and locus of control. The obtained results confirm that there is a significant correlation among tendencies towards psychosomatic reaction, coping styles and locus of control among young adults in the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Effect of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Cardiac Chest Pain Management Training on Perceived Control, Depression, Stress and Anxiety in the Spouses of the Patients with Myocardial Infarction: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

ABSTRACTBackground: Sudden cardiac death is the most common cause of mortality worldwide. Most cases occur at home and the individuals most likely witnessed are family members. Spouses play a significant role in the recovery of such patients. We aimed to investigate the effect of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and cardiac chest pain management trainings on the perceived control, depression, stress and anxiety in the spouses of the patients with Myocardial Infarction (MI).Methods: The present randomized controlled trial study was performed on 78 spouses of the patients admitted to Cardiac Care Unit of the hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences from August 2013 to April 2014. The subjects were randomly assigned into intervention (n=40) and control groups (n=38). The intervention group took part in educational workshop on CPR and cardiac chest pain management and followed-up for six weeks. Data were collected using Depression Anxiety Stress (DASS) Scale and Rotter’s internal-external locus of Control Scale. Statistical methods of data analysis included descriptive statistics, Chi-squared test, paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test, one way analysis of covariance, and multivariate analysis of covariance.Results: There were significant differences between intervention and control groups in perceived control and DASS subscales. After the intervention, perceived control scores reduced from 9.42±3.33 to 8.15±3.65 (P=0.001); depression from 28.85±11.99 to 21.65±8.64 (P=0.001); anxiety from 26.6±9.46 to 20.70±6.29 (P=0.02); and stress from 30.20±10.91 to 24.32±10.23 (P=0.01) in the intervention group.Conclusion: CPR and cardiac chest pain management trainings could effectively improve the perceived control, depression, anxiety, and stress in the spouses of the patients with MI. Validation of the Slovak version of the Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (W-DEQ), version A.

This study aimed to assess the psychometric characteristics of the Slovak translation of the version A of Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (SW-DEQ) among healthy Slovak pregnant women. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the SW-DEQ was performed. Several coefficients of internal consistency were employed for the whole scale as well as for separate factors. Concurrent/convergent validity was assessed by correlation analysis of the overall SW-DEQ score with State-Trait AnxietyInventory, Eysenck Personality Inventory - subscales Neuroticism and Extraversion, as well as with adjusted versions of Beck Depression Inventory and Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. EFA yielded seven factors: 'lack of composure', 'negative appraisal', 'lack of self-efficacy', 'lack of positive anticipation', 'fear and hopelessness', 'loneliness', and 'concern for the child'. The Cronbach's α of the whole scale was .93, while for the separate factors, it ranged between .68 and .87. The sum score of SW-DEQ correlated weakest with extraversion (in nulliparous women) and locus of control (in multiparous women), and strongest with trait anxiety (in both groups). The Slovak version could be considered a valid and reliable measure of fear of childbirth among pregnant Slovak women. However, the dimensional structure of the measure warrants further confirmation (Tab. 7, Ref. 33).

A Study of Correlation Between Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment of Tribal and Non-tribal College Students

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the correlation between Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment. Locus of Control is the Factor of personality. Psychological Adjustment is the factor of success life. It is important to study whether there is any relation between Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment. The sample for the study comprised of 300 Tribal and 300 Non-Tribal college students from South Gujarat region. Tribal and Non-Tribal college students were selected from various faculties Arts, Commerce and Science college at South Gujarat. Internal-External Locus of Control Scale and Psychological Adjustment Scale was used to collect the required primary data. To analysis data ‘r’ Karl Pearson Correlation method was used. Analyzed data presents 0.08 correlation among Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment. Result reveals that there is positive correlation has been found between Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment. This correlation is very low, it is 0.08, means as per the division of correlation it comes under 0.00 to 0.20 is define low correlation between the Locus of Control and Psychological Adjustment. The correlation found positive among them. If person has good Locus of Control then his Psychological Adjustment also good. Those psychologically well adjusted their Locus of Control power also well.

Osobine ličnosti i lokus kontrole kao prediktori građanskog aktivizma

The aim of this study was to verify the possibility of predicting various forms of civil activism based on personality traits, locus of control, and some sociodemographic variables. In this study the participants were 278 activists from 25 NGOs. Data was collected using the Big Five Inventory, Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, Index of Civil Activism, and Activism Orientation Scale. The results indicated that Extraversion was a positive predictor of civil activism and conventional activism. Openness to experience was a positive predictor of conventional activism, while consciousness was a negative predictor of high risk activism. Locus of control, neuroticism and agreeableness were not significant predictors of any of the various activism forms. Personality traits, locus of control, and sociodemographic variables were able to explain a relatively small percentage of variance (< 26%) in different forms of activism.
