A Uniform Solenoidal Magnetic Field Nuclear Spectrometer

The mechanical and electrical features of a ring image type spectrometer are described. The baffle system may be rolled out of the vacuum chamber for ease of adjustment. The predicted momentum resolution vs percent transmission has been verified; e.g., 0.4 percent resolution at 2 percent transmission. A close doublet in the internal conversion spectrum following beta-decay of Cs134 has been observed. The lines differ in momentum by 0.6 percent.

Radiations fromYb169

The radiations from ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{169}$ have been examined by means of a thin lens spectrometer and absorption-coincidence techniques. The half-life was found to be 33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5 days. The half-life of the metastable state was determined as 0.67 \ensuremath{\mu} sec. ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{169}$ decays by electron-capture to ${\mathrm{Tm}}^{169}$. Eleven gamma-rays were observed in the photoelectron and internal conversion spectra determined with the spectrometer. On the basis of the absorption-coincidence and spectrometer data, two decay schemes are discussed.
