Optical Illusions: Exploring their Influence on Functional and Aesthetic Values in Contemporary Interior Design

Objectives: This research aims to investigate the functionality of optical illusions in modern interior design and their impact on functional and aesthetic values, ultimately fostering creativity. The significance of this study lies in providing interior designers with design solutions by exploring the utilization of elements such as colors, lighting, shapes, sizes, and textures in optical illusions to enhance visual appeal in modern interior design.
 Methods: The study employed a comparative analytical approach to examine similar cases, while the inductive approach was utilized to determine the mechanisms of incorporating optical illusions in optimizing contemporary design environments.
 Results: The findings confirm that the use of lighting in optical illusions significantly contributes to mitigating certain shortcomings in interior environments. Additionally, the results indicate that the incorporation of geometric shapes in optical illusions fosters captivating contrasts within the components of interior spaces. The study concludes that the sizes and measurements in optical illusions are critical factors influencing the visual and relative dimensions of interior spaces.
 Conclusions: The research demonstrates that employing optical illusions in a deliberate manner plays a vital role in evoking positive emotions and achieving visual coherence within interior spaces.

Boosting Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization Performance over Yolk-Shell Nickel Molybdate Fabricated by Defect Engineering.

Developing catalysts with optimized surface properties is significant for advanced catalysis. Herein, a rational architectural design is proposed to successfully synthesize yolk-shell nickel molybdate with abundant oxygen vacancies (YS-VO-NMO) via an acid-assisted defect engineering strategy. Notably, YS-VO-NMO with the yolk-shell structure shows complex nanoconfined interior space, which is beneficial to the mass transfer and active sites exposure. Moreover, the defect engineering strategy is of great importance to modulate the surface electronic structure and atomic composition, which contributes to the enrichment of oxygen vacancies. Benefiting from these features, the higher hydrogen peroxide activation is achieved by YS-VO-NMO to produce more hydroxyl radicals compared with untreated nickel molybdate. Consequently, the defect-engineered YS-VO-NMO not only features superior catalytic activity (99.5%) but also retains high desulfurization efficiency after recycling eight times. This manuscript provides new inspiration for designing more promising defective materials via defect engineering and architecture for different applications besides oxidative desulfurization.

Hydro-thermal performance of fabric air duct (FAD): Experimental and CFD simulation assessments

Nowadays, fabric air duct (FAD) systems are the most cost-effective, and aesthetically appealing way to evenly distribute heated or cooled air to large open interior spaces. There is a need to develop a proper procedure to calculate the friction factor and Nusselt number of the air flow inside these types of fabric air ducts because of their great impact on the design of central air conditioning systems. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to carry out laboratory and numerical experiments to establish a certain technique of calculation of the friction factor and Nusselt number inside fabric air ducts and to develop validated CFD air distribution model capable of predicting the air flow pattern and heat transfer parameters inside different configurations of fabric air ducts. By controlling these parameters, FAD systems can be balanced and designed. For this purpose, three fabric air ducts made of porous and non-porous polyester with different outlet ports distribution and have a diameter of 60 cm and a length of 3 m have been experimentally assessed under variation of inlet Reynold numbers ranging from 9.9x103 to 1.47x105. The results showed that the maximum error between laboratory and numerical values for the mean friction factor and mean Nusselt number was 4.9% and 4.8% respectively, which was within an acceptable range according to previous studies. Based on the results analysis empirical correlations were obtained for their importance in achieving a well-balanced FAD system. One of the most significant equations that were obtained in this research was the relationship between the Nusselt number and Reynold number. For porous duct was Nu=127.69Re0.148, non-porous duct 4,8 o'clock air slots was Nu=4.51Re0.49 and non-porous duct 3,9 o'clock air slots was Nu=40.82Re0.139. The relationship between friction factor with Reynold number for porous duct was f=0.251e−0.0000067Re, non-porous duct 4,8 o'clock air slots was f=0.397e−0.000017Re and non-porous duct 3,9 o'clock air slots was f=0.529e−0.000025Re. All correlations are valid only within the range of conditions considered in current experimental study.

Hierarchically open-capsule metal–organic frameworks via controlled etching for enzyme encapsulation

Nanocapsules with large accommodation interior space and exterior shell present a wide range of potential applications for storage, catalysis and drug delivery. However, conventional nanocapsules feature enclosed shells, which reduce the available surface areas for target molecule loading and pose mass transfer resistance. Here, we present a facile strategy for fabrication of hierarchically open-capsule metal–organic frameworks by utilizing a controlled self-etching process. Benefiting from the exposed surface of the openings on the wall and intrinsic stability of the MOFs, this open-capsule MOF (ocMOF) exhibits remarkably higher loading efficiency for lipase (3 times higher than unmodified MOFs). With commercialized lipase product Novozym 435 (N435) as bench mark, the obtained CALB@ocMOF showed 11.3-fold higher catalytic efficiency, with kcat/Km of 186 mM−1·s−1 and comparable stability under hostile conditions. As a proof-of-concept, the prepared CALB@ocMOF was used for non-aqueous enzymatic synthesis of retinyl palmitate, bioavailable substances beneficial for human health, with 3.2-times higher catalytic activity than N435. This study would afford prospects for developing MOFs capsule for biotechnology application.

Factors Predicting Interior Preferences for Vihara or Ubosot

Designers need to comprehend people's preferences to produce enjoyable environments. This research investigated how coherence, complexity, legibility, and mystery can anticipate the interior preferences of Vihara or Ubosot in various architectural styles. Forty-five students were taken to 19 temples and asked to complete an online survey. The findings revealed that coherence, legibility, and mystery were predictors of interior preferences, except for complexity. Moreover, coherence was the only predictor for the Sukhothai style, while coherence and mystery were predictors for the Ayutthaya style. On the other hand, all four variables predicted interior preferences for the Lanna style.

Study of Cross-Scale Micro-Motion Wear Characteristics of Metallic Rubber

Abstract Metal rubber (MR) is a kind of elastic porous material with a complex and disordered internal structure, which results in wear characteristics that can only rely on tests but cannot meet the engineering application. This paper presents an exciting method for studying wear characteristics based on its virtual fabrication technology. By developing the intricate internal multipoint random contact mesh model of MR, a virtual real-time dynamic tracking contact point in a different state is captured. A thorough investigation is conducted into the contact point properties, point distribution, and the interaction of discrete contact points in MR interior space. Accordingly, a cross-scale micro-motion wear study method from micromorphology to macroscopic performance is proposed. The continuous wear cycle of MR is discretized into multiple single-turn metal wire elements by applying the principle of equal spacing. A statistical model of internal contact point wear of MR at the microlayer is developed considering the metal wire’s single-turn fretting wear prediction model. The cumulative prediction model of macroscopic wear damage of MR is based on the superposition of micro-element interval. Finally, the difference between the mass loss and that obtained from the simulation analysis after performing dynamic loading tests at different cycles was studied and found to be insignificant.

Effectiveness of demonstration treatments in indoor spaces "Event rooms and joys as a model"

The study aimed to detect phenomenal treatments in the design of indoor spaces for event rooms and joys according to their performance effectiveness. In the light of the realization of changing formal values of the elements across them, the functional and aesthetic expressive aspect is done. In order to enforce the research objective, the researcher conducted a thorough study, which included three chapters, the first dealing with the problem of research and its relevance and purpose, as well as the limits and definition of terminology. Chapter II contained the theoretical framework, which in turn included researchers, the first of which took demonstrational treatments in indoor spaces. Then came the second research aesthetics of demonstrational treatments in indoor spaces and the employment of systems and design relationships, and then came up with a set of conclusions and recommendations.Keywords: interior space - hall design - interior design treatment - wedding halls - art design.

Color design of modern architectural interior space based on environmental psychology

Abstract Due to the diversified development trend of modern architectural design, the functional design and application of houses are being presented in the interior space color layout of houses with its many advantages of interactivity, comprehensiveness, multi-functionality, and personalization. With this as the starting point, this paper analyzes the psychological perception of survey respondents on the same spatial color through big data, converts the perception into EEG signal for decoding, and after the decoding process of EEG data pre-processing, feature extraction, feature identification, and classification, calculates the significance of each element in the time-frequency matrix, which can get a homo-dimensional mask matrix. Then the conditional random field model is established on the random field theory to get the parameters of the model. Finally, the parameters of the model are obtained by maximizing the following entropy function, which is brought into the Lagrangian operator to obtain the pairwise Lagrangian operator. Finally, the EEG signal is decoded to realize the self-control training of color perception under different mentalities. The experimental results showed that by performing the intervention test on self-control and color insight, the mean value of the total self-control score in training was 61.99±11.45, and the intervention effect had stability. Therefore, improving self-control ability and forming correct tendency psychological perception plays a vital role in the color design of architectural space.

Luxury yacht spaces and their impact on the well-being of guests and crew

PurposeThe purpose of this practice-led article is to explore yachting tourism and its impact on visitors' well-being. This is specifically addressed through the lens of yacht spaces on luxury boats, their use and therefore the enjoyment they facilitate for guests. The article argues that the sense of well-being and satisfaction with life can be facilitated by creating stylish and comfortable spaces which allow a closer connection and interaction with the outdoor environment, ability to combine work and pleasure, and offer retreat for personalised well-being activities such as beauty treatments.Design/methodology/approachThe article is supported by knowledge derived from relevant books, academic and practitioner journals and media, including newspaper articles and websites. The article utilised a qualitative methodology to obtain first-hand luxury yacht practitioner knowledge through ethnographic methods of the life-course of the researcher. Primary data were qualitatively analysed in the context of prior knowledge of the industry.FindingsThe findings demonstrate that interior and exterior spaces on luxury boats can contribute to and enhance the state of well-being and satisfaction with one's life by providing spaces which are not only unique and exclusive in their beauty and comfort but also can facilitate the quality of overall experience when on a luxury yacht holiday. This includes connection with the broader environment of the area, tranquillity, possibility to enjoy one's holiday while being able to engage in one's work, enhancing the quality of a luxury yacht holiday experience through customising one's recreational and relaxation activities such as beauty treatments, sunbathing and offering space for personal seclusion and privacy. Design of yacht spaces in some cases also offers recreation areas for crew, which is a considerate approach towards the well-being of staff. However, this is not currently common practice, especially on smaller boats.Practical implicationsOne potential implication is recognition of the use of space on luxury yachts for the particular benefit of guests. This is a critical consideration at the stage of architectural design of the yacht and its interior planning. Another practical implication is the introduction of recreational/well-being spaces for crew to maximise their productivity by offering them space to recharge their physical and psychological state while working away from home and at intense work levels.Originality/valueThe value of the article is in shedding light on the importance of spaces on luxury yachts and discussing their impact on the well-being of guests and crew. The article provides an insight into daily operations and the use of space to achieve the enhancement of well-being of guests and crew. It also offers recommendations to relevant stakeholders in the luxury yacht industry, charter companies and luxury yacht architects and designers regarding the importance of spaces for owners and guests of luxury yachts to maximise their satisfaction with their luxury yacht experiences and, more specifically, their state of well-being. Understanding the reality of the luxury yachting experience contributes to our academic engagement with this sector of Special Interest Tourism (SIT) which is currently under-researched.

Energy savings strategy for the residential sector in Libya and its impacts on the global environment and the nation economy

ABSTRACT The energy consumption of the Libyan common house is estimated through the use of simulation namely, the TRNSYS simulation programme and other tools to reach the best solutions with the assumption of changing the behaviours of those buildings occupants into better behaviours that help in energy conservation. Using official data from The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Housing and Utility, the Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies (CSERS), measurements and a survey using a well-designed questionnaire, the relevant information is gathered and the research is conducted. The energy audit of the typical home has been conducted by using the simulation programme ‘TRNSYS’ and other tools, to identify the role and weight of each source of energy consumption in the energy savings strategy. The study provided a detailed analysis of the thermal and electrical consumption in Libyan houses. The energy audit showed that the total energy consumption was found about 16,500 kWh/year, and it is distributed by sources as 36% by electrical appliances, 24% by lighting the interior space, 15% for water heating, and about 13% for both cooling and heating the space. The estimated specific energy consumption is found as 238.7 kWh/m2 floor area. As a result, it is found that it is possible to save over 6650 TWh of electrical energy by implementing the proposed strategic plan. These savings will have a positive impact on both the economy and the environment by reducing CO2 emissions from power plants by 6.54 million tonnes of CO2 per year, saving about 1.935 million tons of burning Diesel fuel and saving about $333.54 million as social cost of the CO2. Highlights Identified the common Libyan home. Provided an inventory of electrical appliances and operating regime. Determined the specific energy consumption for the residential buildings in Libya. Determined the thermal and electrical load for the dwelling sector in Libya. Proposed a strategy to reduce energy waste in the dwelling sector. Estimated the environment and economic savings due to the implementation of the proposed strategy.

Verification of Automotive Monopost Seat Strength through Dynamic and Quasi-Static Simulations

A monopost seat is a novel, lightweight seat developed to utilize most of the interior space of vehicles. The space under the seat can be utilized by inserting a monopost columnar structure between a monopost seat rail and the floorboard. This design increases the perceived spaciousness of the vehicle and imparts passengers with a higher degree of freedom, because the seats can be adjusted more easily than standard seats. Meeting these requirements will require the seats to be sufficiently strong and sturdy in order to maintain passenger safety. Compared to traditional seats, it is more likely that a monopost seat will shift under the mass of the passenger, and these seats are more vulnerable to external vehicle collisions. Passenger safety is further compromised if an operational function is added. Therefore, further research on monopost seats is required. This study performed quasi-static and dynamic simulations to determine if the attachment of monopost seats to a vehicle meets international safety requirements in collision events. With a focus on clarifying the dynamic simulation process, the outcomes of quasi-static simulations were compared with the results obtained from dynamic simulations.

Spheres within spheres: nineteenth-century interstitial spaces and Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries (2013)

ABSTRACT The introductory essay to this special issue on Nineteenth-Century Interstitial Spaces begins by noting the period’s pertinence for scholars exploring interstitiality, which as a concept may have existed in earlier historical eras but, as Tim Ingold, Roger Luckhurst, and others have argued, can be more forcefully aligned with the post-Enlightenment values of modernity. We tease out connections within and between the eight contributions to the issue, exploring the relationship between nineteenth-century spaces and other possible (spiritual) worlds, interstitial elements in the Victorian rural, colonial, and urban landscape, and, finally, interstitiality and interior spaces such as the Victorian office. Our own contribution then applies the idea of interstitiality to Eleanor Catton’s neo-Victorian novel The Luminaries (2013), pinpointing its attunement to the nineteenth-century experience of interstitial spaces and its allusion to particular Victorian practices and stories. Building on existing research influenced by the so-called spatial turn, the eight essays gathered here represent another, more recent scholarly shift highlighting the material properties of technological artefacts against their phenomenological or ideological impact.

‘A Village Stood on End’: Anthropology and the Interior of the Modernist Tower

ABSTRACT The paper considers the influence of American anthropologist Margaret Mead on the design and representation of two residential towers of the Waterloo Estate in Sydney, one of Australia's most well-known housing projects. The paper shows how the NSW Housing Commission, in employing Mead as an advisor, attempted to construct an interior perspective on the community qualities of residential towers. The Commission used Mead’s commentary to reframe the domestic environment of the towers – perceived as alienating and hostile in public debate at the time – by establishing an analogy between the residential towers and the village. Mead’s presence offered support for changing the negative public opinion on the proposed redevelopment of Waterloo, but the completed project also corresponded to some of the qualities she had envisioned as an anthropological reframing of the modernist tower. The idea that each tower could be a “village stood on end” aligned with the Commission’s plan to build additional towers. The paper situates Mead’s influence in the ‘anthropologization’ (Teyssot, 2013) of the modernist architectural discourse in the 1960s and concludes by pointing to the contemporary relevance for more shared interior space, as the residential tower is once again becoming an increasingly common feature in Australian cities.

Miniature camera module with a hollow linear ultrasonic motor-based focus feature

The construction of a miniature camera module that can explore inside limited spaces is of great interest for the design of millimeter-scale devices, such as endoscopes. This article presents a miniature camera module with a focus feature using a hollow linear ultrasonic motor. The hollow stator, which is simplified by the expansion and thickness-shear piezoelectric effects, is suitable for the miniaturization of the camera module because it can contain a lens group. The linear slider, which is thin and cylindrical with a slit, is inserted into the stator’s hole and generates a preload that exploits optimal motor performance measures. The resultant camera module is 4.6 mm × 4.6 mm square, which is the smallest one of camera modules reported to date. The motion of the miniature camera module is demonstrated by the wire-driven mechanism and a visual feedback control system. The orientation of the camera module head is controlled by a wire-driven mechanism until the target object is set in the range of view. The lens group placed inside the slider is controlled by the hollow linear ultrasonic motor in a visual feedback-loop system.

The tribal people are deeply rooted in India and have developed their own techniques and characteristics from various sources. Various tribal arts are increasingly recognized as distinct art forms with distinct aesthetic beauty. All the artistic factors that give an artistic formation a distinctive individuality, such as composition, line, color, texture, and rhythm, are examined in this study to evaluate the emerging trends of tribal art in interior design. Art allows people to express their personality and their beliefs. A tribe harbors an environment for generating new ideas for work and life whilst also fostering a sense of community which is vital for a healthy productive life. Tribal Art encourages dialogue and inspires our imaginations. Art improves the quality of our lives and our living spaces. It adds warmth and texture to your space. Thus, Tribal Art lets us think about new ideas, explore and experience new perspectives in life. It helps us take a moment away from our busy lives to connect with new community also. The research is based on secondary data collection through case studies and information collected by government departments based on different research papers respectively. Finally, it is concluded that these tribal art products are astonishing and due to this reason, it makes an interior space more enticing and aesthetic. By promoting the handicraft of Bastar, we are not only revealing the hidden talents of the artisans to the world but also strengthening the Indian culture by escalating it in the global scenario

A Study of Interior Design Colour Scheme Impact on Undergraduate Students’ Mood

Colour is one of the significant design elements that should be considered by designers during design. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of four distinct interior colour schemes on undergraduate students' moods. The range of colours investigated was based on four tints of various hues that would be realistically used in painting interiors different hues. A sample of students majoring in interior design from (Oman College of Management and Technology) responded to an online questionnaire examining the colours selected and their impact on their moods. Anxiety, tension, anger, focus, learning more and relaxation are the impressions and moods investigated in the questionnaire. The analysis of the data collected shows that Bright Green had fewer responses than Orange Yellow for all emotions. The findings also confirmed the idea that red colour is responsible for evoking negative feelings including rage, tension, exhaustion, and others. It was found that blue colour, would be used efficiently to design interior spaces for people who face negative energy to boost their feelings. This study is believed will be supportive of interior designers, and architects using colour in their design processes.

사용자 참여디자인을 적용한 학생 자치활동 공간구성 연구 : 농촌지역 소규모 중학교의 유휴공간 사례를 중심으로

The purpose of this study was to formulate a basic plan for an autonomous student activity space utilizing the idle space of a small middle school in a rural area. User participatory design, consisting of the stages of preparation, investigation of the current status, idea deduction, idea specification, opinion adjustments, and suggestion of a basic plan, was employed for this study. The results of the study were as follows. First, the target space was planned for student leisure, small group interaction, extracurricular and club activities, career experience, and community connection. The limited interior space was connected to an empty outdoor lot. It would be useful for performing projects or simply relaxing outside during free time and after lunch and school. Second, the target space met the design criteria, i.e. openness and variability, connection and continuity, collaboration and interaction, diversity, and playability. Students of different learning types were addressed by preparing individual and small group space and duplex and platform space. Third, various user participatory design methods were employed, including questionnaires, insight tours, keyword mapping, idea sketches, modeling, writing a diary, and sharing outcomes and feedback. Opinion adjustment at the meeting with school officials was helpful, as was the workshop, to compensate for missing class planning parts. Future projects and research could include parents and local residents as users to establish the role of schools in the local community.

고온다습기후 지역 건축물의 외피 계획에서 드러나는 친환경성 분석 : 대만 지역의 EEWH 인증 녹색도서관을 중심으로

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the eco-friendly elements of the building skin in a hot and humid region and to propose feasible eco-friendly planning elements (in Korea). Method: Categorizing external environmental factors that can affect interior space. Identifying the elements of eco-friendly architectural planning from building life cycle perspective. Visiting for field observation about 5 public libraries certificated by Taiwanese Green Building Certification System (EEWH). Characterization planning features by external environmental factors of hot and humid region’s green buildings. Result: Above all, it is extremely important to actively utilize and develope passive air conditioning design skill that can replace mechanical facility-oriented air conditioning systems in modern architecture. Because controlling daytime solar radiation and outside air access at the building skins are directly related to indoor temperature and eventually determines air conditioning system operation. Additionally, when the building can be the part of site and eco-system, it can create a greater synergistic effect by harmonizing with passive air conditioning systems. The vitality of soil and plants ultimately enhances air conditioning by improving air quality and circulation. Lastly, it was empirically confirmed that finding contribution at every stage of building life cycle can be a practicable means of defining the environmental impact of buildings.

Post Occupancy Evaluation of Indoor Air Quality in Green Rated Commercial Interiors

Good indoor air quality is crucial for the health, happiness, and satisfaction of the occupants. Since we spend so much time indoors, it is essential to maintain a reasonable level of indoor air quality. One of the elements contributing to the decline in indoor air quality was the interior materials. Having acknowledged this, green building rating systems have incorporated the use of low-emitting materials as a credit that may be gained. A system for assessing commercial interiors with a focus on interior materials exists and has been used by several commercial offices. This study aimed to understand the indoor air quality in green-rated commercial interior spaces that have won points for the use of low-emitting materials and indoor air quality. A post-occupancy review was conducted on an IGBC rated green commercial interior office space, in which various pollutant concentrations were measured and observations were made regarding space usage, cleaning processes, and maintenance. Almost 41.9% of the areas that were studied had CO2 values that exceeded the threshold. Additionally, the concentration of PM 2.5 was elevated in all locations, particularly during partial occupancy. The findings indicate that the use of low-emitting materials and finishes in office interiors helped to reduce the concentration of pollutants in the indoor environment. However, the concentrations of these various pollutants also depended on several other factors, such as the ventilation system, the use of electronic equipment, the frequency of cleaning practises, etc.
