DESIGNING FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC HOME TEXTILES FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL IN THE INDOOR BUILT ENVIRONMENT: A REVIEW OF NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND OPPORTUNITIES IN PUNJAB

Recently, there has been a lot of innovation in the design and craft of decorative interior textiles. With the advent of advanced technologies and sustainability concerns all over the world, there has been phenomenal progress in the usage of functional applications in the field of interior textile design. These functional applications offer multiple solutions to impart in interior textiles that not only provide an aesthetic appeal in the indoor environment but also furnish the need for health and vector protection. Considering the present environmental conditions and prevalence of vector-borne diseases in the indoor environment in Pakistan, this review study was conducted to assess the user acceptance, and feasibility of manufacturing such products in the mainstream of Punjab textile industry. By employing the design thinking methodology, the study sorted out the technologically feasible and economically viable. Desirability, feasibility and viability. The home textile product that can function as a mosquito repellent in the indoor space after applying a vector protective finish can offer significant benefits to the users. The products may also cater to multiple functions along with their aesthetic appeal. The research presents the needs analysis and recommendations for utilizing functional applications in home textile products.

Peningkatan Teknik Pounding Terinspirasi Happa-Zome dalam Kegiatan Pembuatan Tekstil Ramah Lingkungan di PPSA “Taruna Yodha” Sukoharjo

This community service is carried out with the participation of PPSA (orphanage) Taruna Yodha in Sukoharjo, Central Java. By creating textile products, the activity that incorporates an eco-friendly production process inspired by the Japanese Happa-zome technique (manual leaf-printing decoration technique) is chosen and improved to motivate environmental awareness while strengthening the entrepreneurial capacity of the beneficiaries. The service program is conducted by (in)direct presentation and mentoring, a participatory and iterative process from the beginning to the end. Within the program, design survey activity in the form of exploring nature's potential involves introducing the surrounding natural environment while collecting leaf material. The results are; (1) Providing environmental awareness for beneficiaries through textile-making, (2) the Happa-zome technique for interior textile product development, (3) creating an Entrepreneurial program including story-making and online marketing strategy

Comparative Analysis of Western Ukrainian and Lithuanian Folk Towels

Abstract A comparative analysis of traditional western Ukrainian and Lithuanian towels provides rich material for new creative inspirations, as well as diversification of individual and mass-produced interior textiles, and also visualizes historical ties between the two countries. Therefore, the objective of the article is to analyse the weaving techniques that prevail in the creation of towel decor, to determine the artistic and stylistic parameters of Ukrainian and Lithuanian towels and to establish the common and unique features of their decor. The techniques of plain and twill weaving, the latter of which could obtain simple textured patterns on the canvas, were widespread in both countries. Various weaving compositions were obtained by the pick-up techniques of weaving, the overshot, and the damask weaving technique, which was much more widespread in Lithuania than in the western part of Ukraine.

Effect of Cu Modified Textile Structures on Antibacterial and Antiviral Protection.

Textile structures with various bioactive and functional properties are used in many areas of medicine, special clothing, interior textiles, technical goods, etc. We investigated the effect of two different textile woven structures made of 90% polyester with 10% polyamide (PET) and 100% cotton (CO) modified by magnetron sputtering with copper (Cu) on bioactive properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and four viruses and also on the some comfort parameters. PET/Cu and CO/Cu fabrics have strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumonia. CO/Cu fabric has good antiviral activity in relation to vaccinia virus (VACV), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and influenza A virus H1N1 (IFV), while its antiviral activity against mouse coronavirus (MHV) is weak. PET/Cu fabric showed weak antiviral activity against HSV-1 and MHV. Both modified fabrics showed no significant toxicity in comparison to the control medium and pristine fabrics. After Cu sputtering, fabric surfaces became hydrophobic and the value of the surface free energy was over four times lower than for pristine fabrics. The modification improved thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, facilitated water vapour transport, and air permeability did not decrease.

One‐step flame retardant/hydrophobic finishing on cotton fabric with ammonium salt of hexamethylenediamine ‐ N, N, N′, N′ ‐ tetra (methylphosphonic acid) doped silica sol

AbstractWith the rapid development of textile technology, single‐function textile finishing is difficult to meet the current needs of people for textiles. Textiles with flame retardancy, superhydrophobicity, UV resistance, and other functions are increasingly favored by people. At present, most of the preparation processes of multifunctional textiles are complex and time‐consuming. In this work, a flame retardant hexamethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphate ammonium salt of hexamethylenediamine ‐ N, N, N′, N′ ‐ tetra (methylphosphonic acid) (AHDTMPA) was synthesized using hexamethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphate (HDTMPA) and urea with aqueous solution as solvent. Then AHDTMPA and cetyltrimethoxysilane were added into the solution with methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMOS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors to obtain a multifunctional sol. Finally, the multifunctional cotton fabric can be obtained by immersing the cotton fabric in the multifunctional sol in one‐step. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) and water contact angle (WCA) value of the finished cotton fabric was 27.6% and 131.4°, respectively. The FT‐IR characterization results and the SEM analysis verified the synthesis of AHDTMPA. The micro calorimeter combustion (MCC) and thermo gravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that the finished samples had less heat release capacity and less weight loss. The smoke density test showed good smoke suppression of the finished cotton fabric. Moreover, the whiteness of finished samples was nearly unchanged. In this work, the flame retardant and hydrophobic multi‐functional cotton fabric was prepared by one‐step, and the method is simple and efficient. The prepared functional cotton fabrics can be widely used in home textile fabrics, automotive interior fabrics, clothing fabrics, flags, tents, and protective clothing.

Lipid markers in archaeological pottery vessels excavated at Jneneh Site, in North-Central Jordan

This study is part of a long-term project attempts to better understand the content and use of pottery vessels in the Bronze and Iron Ages in Jordan by examining organic residues preserved in their interior fabrics. The main purpose of this study is to analyse organic residues retained in a second collection of Iron Age II pottery sherds excavated at the site of Jneneh in North-Central Jordan, in order to determine the content and the potential use of the mother vessels based on integrating data obtained from this bimolecular study with those found in the archaeological record. The analysis was applied on these sherds and their associated soils. Residues were retrieved from the pottery fabrics and soils using the conventional solvent extraction method. One portion of each residue was analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) technique, and when needed, another portion was first saponified (alkaline hydrolysed) and then analysed. The analysis revealed the existence of: (1) Markers related to two materials preserved in a sherd that belongs to a coarse storage jar with collared decoration (Jn9; Class 1). The first material is beeswax, which may have intentionally been applied as a sealant on the inner side of the jar in order to store aqueous liquids like water or to store dry goods. Using the jar for storing honey, which probably was not completely filtered from beeswax, was also proposed. The second material is being of plant origin, possibly oil or mixture of oils, preserved as a result of using the same jar for storing, either before or unlikely after sealing the jar with beeswax. Using both materials as a mixture inside the jar was also suggested. These two materials reoccurred for the second time in vessels from the same site. (2) Markers related to animal fat (possibly ruminant-based milk lipid, which requires confirmation) preserved in a sherd that belongs to a fine miniature jug (Jn4; Class 2), which was probably used for holding the milk products for daily based use. (3) Markers with very low concentrations related to a plant wax originated from unknown source were also observed in seven pottery sherds (Class 3), some of these sherds have contamination signals from handling and modern materials. (4) Few number of undiagnostic markers with very low concentrations were also detected in other five sherds (Class 4), therefore, their origin could not be determined. The organic contents of the latter two classes, and particularly Class 4, may have been subjected to a high level of degradation and depletion, therefore, residue analysis of this study could not provide data on the use of Classes 3 and 4 mother vessels but archaeologically their potential uses were discussed in this paper. Analysis of the markers present in the soils adhering onto the surfaces of pottery sherds provided evidences on the occurrence of lipid-based natural materials inside Jn9 and Jn4 vessels and on degradation and depletion of organic contents, as well as contamination from soil lipids in case of the other vessels. Hence, this study presents further evidence on, possibly, the common use of bees and plant products in the IA II settlement at Jneneh.

Multi-criteria decision analysis for supporting the selection of car upholstery fabric under degradation due to UV exposure

Automotive textiles are one of the most important markets in the technical textile sector. Various types of requirements must be considered in the development of the interior fabrics to satisfy both esthetic and functional demands. Many factors are affecting the properties of the car upholstery fabrics, for instance textile material, yarn specifications, fabric construction, and finishing material as well as combined with UV and light resistance. The influence of UV radiation on the degradation rate involves several parameters such as fabric tenacity, elongation, abrasion resistance, and flammability, under exposure to sunlight for several exposure times. Consequently, it’s important to determine the degradation of the automotive textiles according to area where it will be served. Generally, several properties are prerequisites should be all together considered to selected car upholstery fabric, basis on overseeing several requirements and ranking the candidate fabric properties. In this paper, an approach to choose the optimal material for a given component is described, and fabric properties are classified given each a suitable weight. In a simulation of a car cabin in shape and conditions, a radiation chamber was constructed to expose different fabric specimens to sun light. Two evaluation methods were proposed for the ranking of the car upholstery material, made of different fabrics, according to its property loss due to UV exposure during severability. It was found that polyester and nylon are ranked to be the best materials for automobile upholstery.

TEXTILES IN THE RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR

The relevance of the study is due to new experience in architectural design, new technologies and types of materials and the need to generalize and systematize them to expand the formative possibilities of textiles in the design of residential interiors. Research in the field of interior textile design was carried out by: T.I. Isayeva, Khabibullina, E.V. Zmanovska and others. The purpose of the study is to identify areas, functions and compositional techniques of textiles in residential interiors. The historical reference of development of textile production is resulted. The structural analysis of textiles in the interior by types of textile materials, production technology, types of weave, types of ornaments; identified qualities of textile materials, which determine their widespread use and the main areas of application of textiles in modern residential interiors. According to the results of the research, the main functions of textiles in the interior are revealed: creation of a comfortable microclimate in the room; psychological comfort; space adjustment; visual isolation; protection of surfaces from damage and pollution; hygiene products; decorative; compositional component of interior space design. The description of types of textile wall-paper, curtains is resulted. The compositional function of textiles in the interior is revealed: accent, dominant, background, rhythm.
 The conclusion is made that at a choice of textiles and reception of placement it is necessary to consider regional natural and climatic conditions; the style decision of an interior is accepted; function, size, orientation on the sides of the horizon of the room; combination of textiles with finishing of surfaces of enclosing designs and subject filling of the room; combination of fabrics in texture, color and pattern; price segment.

Water-soluble plastic as a medium to make polyester patchwork embroidery craft

This study aimed to describe the process of polyester fabric waste to be an alternative material to make interior textiles. The characteristics of polyester fabric waste meet the qualities needed to be used as the material for making interior textile. The problem in this study is the effectiveness of using water soluble film paper as a medium for the application of manual embroidery techniques to make polyester patchwork. This study used experimental and implementation methods on textile crafts. The results of this study show that water soluble film paper can be used as a medium for applying manual embroidery techniques on polyester patchwork which is profitable and does not leave any residual waste. Thus, this medium is considered environmentally friendly. This method can be applied to bring out the element of craftsmanship based on the scope of textile craft study. Functional products made by using this method are also expected to provide aesthetic value in a room. This study is essential and useful to contribute to an overview to the community about alternative resources for apparel industry waste from the local area that can be created into new products with higher value.

Barriers to the circular economy: The case of the Dutch technical and interior textiles industries

AbstractThe academic literature offers some insights about lagging progress on circular economy (CE) transition, including cultural, regulatory, market, and technical barriers. There is also an increasing body of knowledge about barriers to CE adoption that takes a macro‐level perspective across industries. However, such studies have largely neglected the industry scale. This study fills that gap by examining barriers to CE transition in the Dutch technical and interior textiles industries. Using data from 27 interviews with manufacturers and retailers, the study finds that high costs for production and marketing, along with lack of consumer interest, are among the most substantial barriers. To provide a system‐wide perspective, the study conceptualizes relationships among barriers as a chain reaction: limited knowledge of CE design options raises the difficulty and cost of delivering high‐quality circular products at the firm level, while limited availability of circular supply streams combined with the orientation of existing production systems toward linear supply chains constrain CE transition at the industry level. These findings highlight the need for intervention at levels beyond the scale of individual firms, a key implication for public policy.

A Survey on Interior Textiles at İzmir Atatürk House Museum

This study deals with the interior textiles of the house that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, used as headquarters and resided for a short period of time. Interior textiles in the house museum provide a useful framework for understanding how home culture was shaped, experienced, and imagined in that period. Interior textiles in a house museum provide a rich source for researchers to get background information. These textiles can be original, non-original or replicas. During the research, it was found out that the original upholstery fabrics were replaced with the fabrics that did not match with the original ones as a result of the restoration of Atatürk House Museum. For this reason, the research was carried out with the non-original textiles. Here, the critical question is “Do the non-original textiles fail to reflect the spirit of a nation or a personal taste?”. This study investigates the connection between the non-original textiles and the early republic period. Within the scope of the research, the researcher has interpreted the design features and upholstery fabrics of one armchair, one sofa and three chairs, which stand in the drawing room, bedroom, dining hall and meeting hall.

Exploration of Fabric Typology for Interior Furnishings with Reference to Regional Textile Products of Pakistan

The fabric is one of the core elements of interior design. The fabrics are important in interior design because they are everywhere and needed by everyone, that helps to attain perfection in design. Many decorations include textiles with interesting patterns, and artists create the images on those textiles. Pakistan has a rich culture and crafts which are deeply rooted in interior textiles in the form of use of colors, designs, materials, and of course the minds which combine them to a memorable piece. The purpose of the study is to find out the use of fabric as a textile product in the interior and to find out the best type of design, texture, color, and pattern in textiles interiors as a fabric. The data are depicted through pictures taken form homes and interviews of house ladies also helped to find out choices for interior textiles. The survey of household textiles concluded that a variety of color, design, and texture is available in fabrics, household ladies preferably use cotton, linen, wool, viscose, polyester, leather, and nylon blends. The fabrics are selected according to the regional suitability, cost, durability, comfort, and aesthetic properties. The bedsheet, pillows, cushions, curtains, towels, wall hangings and coverings, dining sheets, and lamps are popular fabric products in home textiles. The other consideration was for end-use, cost, durability, comfort, and aesthetic properties. Pakistan must promote national products because of its unique design, quality, durability, and low price.

The Nantucket Looms: Historicism and Modernism in an Island Cottage Industry

Social and political upheavals of the 1960s spurred many reactions in the arts, from optimistic modernism to nostalgic historicism, that resulted in a widespread revival of handcraft. On Nantucket, the 1960s craft revival coincided with a renaissance of the island itself, as it looked towards the past to shape its future. The wharf transformed and historical tourism was promoted, the island a time capsule of its nineteenth-century glory days as a whaling port. In 1961, the Nantucket Historical Trust renovated the Jared Coffin House, a historic whaling merchant’s mansion turned hotel, decorating it with custom reproduction interior textiles. A weaving workshop was established, and the Nantucket Looms was born. While historicism is Nantucket’s trademark, a study of the Nantucket Looms in the 1960s reveals that modernism is equally apparent in Nantucket’s craft history. The Nantucket Looms expanded into commercial ventures guided by key players with a deep knowledge of historic textiles and an affinity for modernist design and practices. Mary Ann Beinecke managed the Looms’ hand weaving production workshop, while Andy Oates trained weavers in a style clearly influenced by his teacher, famed modernist weaver Anni Albers. Later in the 1960s, New York design duo Leslie and Doris “D. D.” Tillett expanded the reach and scope of the Looms with printed textiles exhibiting their legacy of modernist design and knowledge of traditional techniques. Oates and subsequent owners have continued to honor craft tradition while staying modern. Through original research, including contemporary press, interviews, and extant textiles, this paper tells the story of the Nantucket Looms, a case study of the 1960s craft revival on an island thirty miles out to sea, and the role of historicism and modernism in the cultural identity of an island that is often stereotyped, but rarely examined theoretically and historically.

Інтер'єрний текстиль з екрануючими властивостями до дії електромагнітного випромінювання

The purpose. An investigation of the shielding effectiveness against electromagnetic radiation (EMR) by woven fabrics that are presented on the Ukrainian interior textile market. Methodology. Theoretical and experimental research is based on the general principles of textile materials science. The shielding effectiveness to EMR of textile fabrics was tested and measured using EM-2107A (Electro Metrics) in accordance with ASTM 4935-10 in the frequency range 30 MHz – 1.5 GHz. Results. Flexible screens based on textile materials are widely used for EMR shielding. The shielding effectiveness against EMR by textile materials can be improved with fabric modifying by metal fibers/threads, metal particles or conductive polymers at various stages of textile production. It possible to substantiate the expediency of using metal-containing textile materials as interior textiles on the result of carried out analysis of the modern assortment of interior textiles and the experimental studies. Studies results have shown that the proposed fabrics have a high shielding ability by the classification "professional use" according to FTTS-FA-003 Specified Requirements of Electromagnetic Shielding Textiles, the shielding efficiency of which is within 30 ÷ 60 dB. Scientific novelty. The expediency of using modern metal-containing textile materials as interior textiles for windows decoration has been substantiated. The studied textile materials make it possible to clarify a new promising segment of the interior textile market - windows decoration. The main goal of such textile - the decoration of the residential and administrative buildings is expanded and supplemented by the function of electromagnetic radiation shielding. Practical significance. The complex of scientific research on the shielding effectiveness against EMR allowed offering a new range of interior textile materials for window decoration.

ЄВРЕЙСЬКІ ОСЕРЕДКИ ТЕКСТИЛЬНОГО ВИРОБНИЦТВА В ГАЛИЧИНІ КІНЦЯ ХІХ – ПЕРШОЇ ТРЕТИНИ ХХ СТ.: ТЕНДЕНЦІЇ, АСОРТИМЕНТ

Textile manufacturing owned by the Jews in Galicia at the end of ХІХ – the first third of XX century is studied in the article. On the basis of archive documents and author’s field materials, preconditions for establishing relevant centers are determined; the main factors that influenced the textile industry development are highlighted. The attention is focused on knitted and lace goods manufacturing of both new and fancy assortment of the period under the study. The principle of a systematic approach and complex study constitutes the methodological basis. In order to investigate the selected object of study, historical and art studies methods are applied. During the scientific expeditions while collecting materials from the old inhabitants the interview method was used. Textile manufacturing in Galicia is divided into two main directions: according to the manufacturing principle: folk textile, where centuries-old traditions prevail, and professional textile, where specialists and special-purpose equipment are involved and fashionable trends are considered. It was found that at the end of ХІХ – the first third of XX century a considerable part of local textile industry was owned by the Jews. To some extent, this was due to the fact that they received proper education, set up own businesses, produced assortment that met the demands of consumers of various strata of society. Knitted and lace goods manufacturing, which became fashionable both in urban and rural areas, was productive. It was ascertained that apart from fancy goods, traditional woven Hutsul «zapaska», carpets and «kraikas» involving local population were manufactured. The scientific novelty consists in the study of one more aspect of textile industry in Galicia where the attention is focused on the peculiarities of manufacturing the textile assortment in the centers belonging to the Jews. The study allows expanding knowledge of textile industry in Galicia, clothes assortment and interior fabrics manufacturing centers, which favours involving the received data to learn the history of textile in Galicia.

Testing thermoplastic elastomers selected as flexible three-dimensional printing materials for functional garment and technical textile applications

Three-dimensional printing has already been shown to be beneficial to the fabrication of custom-fit and functional products in different industry sectors such as orthopaedics, implantology and dental technology. Especially in personal protective equipment and sportswear, three-dimensional printing offers opportunities to produce functional garments fitted to body contours by directly printing protective and (posture) supporting elements on textiles. In this article, different flexible thermoplastic elastomers, namely, thermoplastic polyurethanes and thermoplastic styrene block copolymers with a Shore hardness range of 67A–86A are tested as suitable printing materials by means of extrusion-based fused deposition modelling. For this, adhesion force, abrasion and wash resistance tests are conducted using various knitted and woven workwear and sportswear fabrics primarily made of cotton, polyester or aramid as textile substrates. Due to polar interactions between thermoplastic polyurethane and textile substrates, excellent adhesion and high fastness to washing is observed. While fused-deposition-modelling-printed polyether-based thermoplastic polyurethane polymers keep their abrasion–resistant properties, polyester-based thermoplastic polyurethanes are more prone to hydrolysis and can be partially degraded if presence of moisture cannot be excluded during polymer processing and printing. Thermoplastic styrene compounds generally exhibit lower adhesion and abrasion resistance, but these properties can be sufficient depending on the requirements of a particular application. Soft thermoplastic styrene filaments can be processed down to a Shore hardness of 70A resulting in three-dimensional printed parts with good quality and comfortable soft-touch surface. Finally, three demonstrator case studies are presented covering the entire process to realize the customized and three-dimensional printed textile. This encompasses product development and fabrication of a textile integrated custom-fit back protector and knee protector as well as customized functionalization of a technical interior textile for improved acoustic comfort. In the future, printing material modifications by compounding processes have to be taken into account for optimized functional performance.

Japanese collection of V.V. Vereshchagin: questions, answers, secrets

The paper is dedicated to the collection of Japanese art objects, which were bought by the famous Russian artist V.V. Vereshchagin during his travelling to Japan in 1903. The paper represents the main information about the travel and excerpts from Vereshchagins memories about the country and art objects he bought. The description of the Vereshchagins collection was made on the base of the memories of Vereshchagins son and the catalogue of the collection which was published for the trade-exhibition in Moscow in 1910. Japanese collections part of the catalogue consists of the objects № 76-355. Some groups were distinguished among those artifacts: interior items, textile, clothes, accessories, enamel, bronze, turtle, porcelain, faience and different trivia. The description of the collection was made in connection with those groups. Some thoughts are represented about the main reasons of the collections trade-exhibition and its fate after the trade-exhibition. Analyzing the art objects, which were brought by Vereshchagin from Japan could help to understand what artists interest was in Japanese life.

Parametric modelling design applied to weft knitted surfaces and its effects in their physical properties

This work proposes the creation of models of surfaces using a parametric computer modelling software to obtain three-dimensional structures in weft knitted fabrics produced on single needle system machines. Digital prototyping, another feature of digital modelling software, was also explored in three-dimensional drawings generated using the Rhinoceros software. With this approach, different 3D structures were developed and produced. Physical characterization tests were then performed on the resulting 3D weft knitted structures to assess their ability to promote comfort. From the obtained results, it is apparent that the developed structures have potential for application in different market segments, such as clothing and interior textiles.

Textiles and Space: The Experience of Textile Qualities in Hospital Interior Design

Textiles and the intimate scale of interiors affect the perception of the space extensively. However, knowledge on how interior textiles can improve the experience of hospital spaces is lacking. Contemporary hospitals are often criticized as being too institutional in their physical appearance, and research suggests that more accommodating hospital interiors are needed. Concerned with this awareness, this paper presents the results from a design-based case study, observing and interviewing patients and staff in a hospital dayroom where different interior textiles were installed. The evaluation of the study indicates that patients experience the atmosphere as more accommodating in the refurbished interior, and patients express that they use the dayroom more often. The interior textiles are described as significant contributors to this improved experience. Based on these findings, the paper discusses the potential benefits of implementing textiles in hospital interior spaces in order to promote patient outcomes.

Development of a Coating Machine for Making Automotive Seat Covers

Automotive seat covers with olefin film imported from foreign companies exhibit some problems such as low peeling strength and high burning rate. The traditional manufacturing process requires gas flame or direct heating for the laminating step. This paper introduces an alternative solution that replaces the olefin film and flame lamination method in making automotive seat covers or interior fabrics. We adopt a new manufacturing concept that applies a water-based resin coating to develop a coating system. The coating machine was successfully developed and tested. Results are intended to contribute to improving the quality and productivity of automotive seat cover production.
