Characterizing Spatial and Temporal Variations in N2O Emissions from Dairy Manure Management in China Based on IPCC Methodology

The emission factor method (Tier 1) recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is commonly used to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock and poultry farms. However, the estimation accuracy may vary due to practical differences in manure management across China. The objectives of this study were to estimate the direct and indirect nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from dairy manure management between 1990 and 2021 in China and characterize its spatial and temporal variations following IPCC guideline Tier 2. The N2O emission factor (EF) of dairy cow manure management systems was determined at the national level and regional level as well. The results showed that the national cumulative N2O emission of manure management from 1990 to 2021 was 113.1million tons of CO2 equivalent, ranging from 90.3 to 135.9 million tons with an uncertainty of ±20.2%. The annual EF was 0.021 kg N2O-N (kg N)−1 for total emissions, while it was 0.014 kg N2O-N (kg N)−1 for direct emissions. The proportions of N2O emissions in North China, Northeast China, East China, Central and Southern China, Southwest China and Northwest China were 32.3%, 18.6%, 11.4%, 5.8%, 6.1% and 25.8%, respectively. In addition, N2O emissions varied among farms in different scales. The respective proportions of total N2O emissions from small-scale and large-scale farms were 64.8% and 35.2% in the past three decades. With the improvement in farm management and milk production efficiency, the N2O emissions per unit mass of milk decreased from 0.77 × 10−3 kg to 0.48 × 10−3 kg in 1990–2021. This study may provide important insights into compiling a GHG emission inventory and developing GHG emission reduction strategies for the dairy farming system in China.

The pandemic effect on GHG emission variation at the sub-national level and translation into policy opportunities

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories are commonly compiled at country level to monitor national progress towards nationally or internationally agreed targets. While they can support national climate change mitigation strategies, accounting for the intra-national heterogeneity of a country can draw different conclusions directly linked to the socio-economic and environmental sub-national context. This means that more refined and accurate policies and mitigation strategies can be designed when supported by GHG inventories at sub-national scale. The differences between sub-national territorial emissive behavior can be revealed by subjecting different territories to the same stress factors. A complete GHG emissions inventory, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines, is compiled for three diverse administrative territories, in terms of scale, socio-economic contexts, and environmental conditions. By selecting three diverse sub-national contexts belonging to the same national territory – Italy – the analysis provides highly detailed information on the emissive status and behavior and delivers insights that national inventories fail to provide. The COVID-19 pandemic is considered as a stress factor; therefore, the reference years are 2019 and 2020 during which GHG emissions are detected. The study will test the capacity of sub-national GHG emission inventories, compiled by scaling the IPCC methodology to the sub-national level, to detect such differences through the lens of the pandemic. This allows obtaining detailed information and linking the pandemic effect to the GHG emissions of particular activities, which can inspire effective sub-national context-specific mitigation actions. Furthermore, we show that environmental and economic metrics are not as strictly coupled as they would appear at national level.

Carbon fluxes from land 2000–2020: bringing clarity to countries' reporting

Abstract. Despite an increasing attention on the role of land in meeting countries' climate pledges under the Paris Agreement, the range of estimates of carbon fluxes from land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF) in available databases is very large. A good understanding of the LULUCF data reported by countries under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – and of the differences with other datasets based on country-reported data – is crucial to increase confidence in land-based climate change mitigation efforts. Here we present a new data compilation of LULUCF fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) on managed land, aiming at providing a consolidated view on the subject. Our database builds on a detailed analysis of data from national greenhouse gas inventories (NGHGIs) communicated via a range of country reports to the UNFCCC, which report anthropogenic emissions and removals based on the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology. Specifically, for Annex I countries, data are sourced from annual GHG inventories. For non-Annex I countries, we compiled the most recent and complete information from different sources, including national communications, biennial update reports, submissions to the REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) framework, and nationally determined contributions. The data are disaggregated into fluxes from forest land, deforestation, organic soils, and other sources (including non-forest land uses). The CO2 flux database is complemented by information on managed and unmanaged forest area as available in NGHGIs. To ensure completeness of time series, we filled the gaps without altering the levels and trends of the country reported data. Expert judgement was applied in a few cases when data inconsistencies existed. Results indicate a mean net global sink of −1.6 Gt CO2 yr−1 over the period 2000–2020, largely determined by a sink on forest land (−6.4 Gt CO2 yr−1), followed by source from deforestation (+4.4 Gt CO2 yr−1), with smaller fluxes from organic soils (+0.9 Gt CO2 yr−1) and other land uses (−0.6 Gt CO2 yr−1). Furthermore, we compare our NGHGI database with two other sets of country-based data: those included in the UNFCCC GHG data interface, and those based on forest resources data reported by countries to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and used as inputs into estimates of GHG emissions in FAOSTAT. The first dataset, once gap filled as in our study, results in a net global LULUCF sink of −5.4 Gt CO2 yr−1. The difference with the NGHGI database is in this case mostly explained by more updated and comprehensive data in our compilation for non-Annex I countries. The FAOSTAT GHG dataset instead estimates a net global LULUCF source of +1.1 Gt CO2 yr−1. In this case, most of the difference to our results is due to a much greater forest sink for non-Annex I countries in the NGHGI database than in FAOSTAT. The difference between these datasets can be mostly explained by a more complete coverage in the NGHGI database, including for non-biomass carbon pools and non-forest land uses, and by different underlying data on forest land. The latter reflects the different scopes of the country reporting to FAO, which focuses on area and biomass, and to UNFCCC, which explicitly focuses on carbon fluxes. Bearing in mind the respective strengths and weaknesses, both our NGHGI database and FAO offer a fundamental, yet incomplete, source of information on carbon-related variables for the scientific and policy communities, including under the Global stocktake. Overall, while the quality and quantity of the LULUCF data submitted by countries to the UNFCCC significantly improved in recent years, important gaps still remain. Most developing countries still do not explicitly separate managed vs. unmanaged forest land, a few report implausibly high forest sinks, and several report incomplete estimates. With these limits in mind, the NGHGI database presented here represents the most up-to-date and complete compilation of LULUCF data based on country submissions to UNFCCC. Enteric methane emissions by lactating and dry cows in the high Andes of Peru.

The objective of the study was to determine enteric methane emissions using the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) technique and comparing with The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology in lactating cows (LC) and dry cows (DC) in the Peruvian highlands. Enteric methane (CH4) emissions were measured on 5 LC and 6 DC Brown Swiss in a grazing system without concentrate. Forages samples were collected and analyzed for dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber. Milk samples were collected and analyzed for fat, crude protein, and lactose to estimate energy-corrected milk. Animal intakes were measured using the external marker titanium dioxide (production of feces) and crude protein in feces (organic digestibility of the feed) and estimated by using performance data. The enteric methane emissions of LC were higher than methane emissions of DC (325 and 266g CH4/cow/day for LC and DC, respectively (P < 0.001)). Methane emissions were 358.5g CH4/day by SF6 technique and 291.6g CH4/day by IPCC methodology for LC and 337.4g CH4/day by SF6 technique and 195.8g CH4/day by IPCC methodology for DC. Methane yields measured by SF6 were higher than methane yields estimated by IPCC methodology (29g CH4/kg DM and 22g CH4/kg DM using SF6 technique and IPCC methodology, respectively (P < 0.001)). Methane yields were differently for all expressions by physiological stage and method. The methane conversion factor (Ym) was 9.7% for LC and 9.6% for DC. Methane intensities were similar by method (P > 0.05). It was concluded that IPCC's methodology underestimate the CH4 emissions of dairy systems in the Peruvian Andes; therefore, in order to obtain precise Ym, direct measurements of enteric CH4 in the different regions of Peruvian highlands are required.

Quantifying N leaching losses as a function of N balance: A path to sustainable food supply chains

Growing public concern over agricultural nitrogen (N) pollution is now reflected in consumers’ food choices and shareholders’ resolutions, causing rapid changes in global food supply chains. Nitrate (NO3) leaching represents the primary N source for groundwater contamination and freshwater ecosystem degradation. However, simplified science-based indicators are still lacking to facilitate improved N management practices at the farm-level. We conducted a global analysis of published field studies to evaluate N balance (N inputs minus N outputs) as a robust predictor for NO3 losses. Using 82 studies (1110 observations) for rainfed cereal crops in temperate regions, we 1) quantified the response of NO3 losses to changes in N balance for major rainfed cereal crops while accounting for environmental and management variables; and 2) assessed the feasibility of improving water quality through lower N balance under different scenarios using the case study of maize (Zea mays L.) data from the US Corn Belt. Observations were grouped in studies from the US and non-US regions. Results show that NO3 losses increased exponentially as N balance increases for both the US and non-US regions, though they were 60% higher in the US at a given N balance. Scenario analysis revealed that reducing the N rate from the agronomic optimum to the lower point within the economic optimum N rate range decreased NO3 losses by 13% without impacting economic returns. The case study for maize showed that improvements in N use efficiency that increase grain yield at a given fertilizer rate can substantially reduce N balance and mitigate NO3 losses. This study provides an evidence-based foundation for food supply chain companies to mitigate global NO3 pollution, specifically by using the generalized relationships presented here to track progress in NO3 leaching mitigation. To further resolve uncertainties and improve region-specific estimates for NO3 losses, we propose a tiered monitoring and assessment framework similar to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology for N2O emissions, widely implemented in science and used for policy.

Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Agriculture, with Particular Emphasis on Emissions from Energy Used

The relationship between agriculture and climate change is two-sided. Agriculture is the branch of the economy most affected by the ongoing processes. It is also a large emitter of greenhouse gases and there are more and more voices about the need to reduce emissions. The purpose of the study was, based on FADN (Farm Accountancy Data Network) data, to determine the structure of greenhouse gas emissions in farms and to identify types of farms where it is possible to reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions through better energy use. The emission volume was determined on the basis of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology modified for the FADN data. The emissions related to the production of energy were found to be of minor importance compared to other emission sources. Only in the horticultural crop type is the emission from the Energy section the dominant stream of GHG emission. The greatest emissions come from livestock production. Therefore, the emphasis on reducing emissions should not be placed on the Energy sector because, except for the type of horticultural farm, there is not much potential for reduction. The introduction of taxes for GHG emissions at the level of 27.31 EUR/t would reduce farm income from 21% for the type of field crops to 40% for the type of herbivorous animals. The exception is low-emission permanent crops, where the decrease in income would be only 3.85%.

Application of Life Cycle Assessment in the Environmental Study of Sustainable Ceramic Bricks Made with ‘alperujo’ (Olive Pomace)

Investigations on the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to the construction sector have shown that the environmental impact of construction products can be significantly reduced. To achieve this, the use of best available techniques and eco-innovation in production plants must be promoted. In this way, the use of finite natural resources can be replaced by waste generated in other production processes, preferably available locally, stimulating the creation of more sustainable products. Conducting a comparative LCA study between the traditional ceramic brick manufacturing process and the ceramic brick manufacturing process incorporating ‘alperujo’ (waste generated in the virgin oil extraction process), is an inevitable step to achieve the integration of circularity and eco-innovation in the production system of traditional ceramic materials, through the CML(Centrum voor Milieukunde Leiden) and IPCC(The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology. The obtained results suggest that the environmental benefits in this practice are very limited, even taking into account the contribution of different amounts of this waste to the production of bricks.

A techno-economic assessment of landfill gas emissions and energy recovery potential of different landfill areas in Turkey

Landfills are a widespread application for the management of municipal solid waste and the production of energy. However, landfill gas estimations, analysis of its energy capacity, and economic analyses need to be performed properly for a landfill project area. Although there are many gas prediction models in the literature, the default values in the model such as the methane production capacity (Lo) and the methane production rate (k) need to be recalculated according to the climate and waste composition of the region in order to obtain a more accurate gas estimation. Furthermore, the energy project from waste is expected to evaluate the through lifetime with variables (landfill operation, gas collection efficiency, different combustion engines, etc.) for an optimum plant capacity. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the landfill gas and methane production potential that can be obtained in landfill areas in different provinces of Turkey and to determine an optimum plant capacity by performing energy production cost analysis. To achieve this, the LandGEM 3.02 version was used to estimate long-term landfill gas potential in this study. The Lo value was calculated by using the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology, and the k value was determined by considering the meteorological data of the regions (precipitation amount, etc.). The future population of the selected regions was estimated using the arithmetic increase method. According to this estimation, the solid waste quantity to be generated in the future was calculated. Energy capacities of these areas were calculated using internal combustion reciprocating engines with six different capacities. The unit energy production cost was evaluated by employing the levelized cost method. The optimum plant capacity was found by evaluating the energy production costs obtained for each site and six different engines. As a result, it is observed that the energy production plant with the optimum capacity determined from waste is economically and ecologically feasible.

Estimation of Greenhouse Gases Emitted from Energy Industry (Oil Refining and Electricity Generation) in Iraq Using IPCC Methodology

The energy sector is integral to the wellbeing of the entire Iraqi economy and will remain so well into the future. In the current study, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology was used to estimate CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions from oil refining and electricity generation in Iraq for a period exceeding 25 years. From 1990, Iraq experienced two wars and an economic siege, then faced political, social, and security instability, which affected its energy production. The results showed that the CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions from the oil refining and electricity generation in Iraq experienced a sharp decline in the years 1991, 2003, and 2007 due to a decrease in the production of oil derivatives in refineries, according to political and security conditions. The total CO2 emissions from the types of fuel used in electricity generation in Iraq was approximately 14,000 Gg and 58,000 Gg in 1990 and 2017, respectively. The increase in CO2 emissions was greater than 300% between 1990 and 2017. The continued use of poor types of fuel, such as fuel oil and crude oil, will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from these sources, and higher levels of environmental pollution.

Measured ammonia emissions from tropical and subtropical pastures: A comparison with 2006 IPCC, 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC, and EMEP/EEA (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme and European Environmental Agency) inventory estimates

Agriculture is the largest source of ammonia (NH3) emissions. As NH3 is an indirect greenhouse gas, NH3 measurements are crucial to improving greenhouse gas emission inventory estimates. Moreover, NH3 emissions have wider implications for environmental and human health. Only a few studies have measured NH3 emissions from pastures in the tropics and subtropics and none has compared emissions to inventory estimates. The objectives of this study were to (1) measure NH3 emissions from dairy pastures in tropical and subtropical regions; (2) calculate NH3 emissions factors (EF) for each campaign; and (3) compare measured EF with those based on the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Tier 1, 2019 Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Tier 1, and the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme/European Environmental Agency (EMPE/EEA) Tier 2 inventory estimates. Pasture NH3 emissions were measured on 3 dairy farms in Costa Rica. On each dairy, NH3 emissions were measured twice during the wet season and once during the dry season using a micrometeorological integrated horizontal-flux mass-balance method. Emissions were measured from excreta (dung and urine) deposited by grazing cattle and the subsequent application of organic (slurry) or synthetic fertilizer (ammonium nitrate or urea). Measured EF for all campaigns [from grazing cattle excreta and any subsequent slurry or fertilizer application; 4.9 ± 0.9% of applied nitrogen (mean ± SE)] were similar to those of the EMEP/EEA Tier 2 approach (6.1 ± 0.9%; mean ± SE) and 4 times lower than 2006 IPCC and 2019 Refinement to 2006 IPCC Tier 1 default estimates (17.7 ± 1.4 and 18.2 ± 0.9%, respectively; mean ± SE). Measured EF for excreta deposited on pasture and excreta both deposited on pasture and slurry application [3.9 ± 2.1 and 4.2 ± 2.1% (mean ± 95% CI), respectively] were 5 times lower than default EF assumed by 2006 IPCC and 2019 Refinement to 2006 IPCC methodology (both 20 and 21%, respectively), whereas EMEP/EAA estimates were similar [6.0 and 4.6 ± 0.3% (mean ± 95% CI), respectively]. This suggests an overestimation of EF from excreta deposited on pasture and slurry applications in tropical and subtropical regions by IPCC methodologies. Furthermore, rainfall, which is not included as a parameter in the current EMEP/EEA Tier 2 methodology, appeared to reduce NH3 emissions, suggesting that accounting for this in the inventory methodologies could improve inventory estimates.

Estimating GHG Emission Level from Oil and Gas Offshore Production Facility

Oil and gas (O&amp;G) production activities emits greenhouse gases (GHG) which must be well estimated to improve accountability and formulating efficient mitigation. The Indonesia’s GHG emission reported thru Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) was estimated by Tier-1 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method, while the O&amp;G company adopts different methodology. This leads to asynchronous GHG emission contribution of this industry to national GHG emission. This paper aims to estimate the GHG inventory from O&amp;G offshore production facility by using American Petroleum Institute (API) Compendium Methodology and compare it with Tier-1 IPCC Methodology. It found that GHG emission estimated by API method is significantly lower than IPCC method. Both methods shown fuel combustion sources are the dominant. GHG emission sources from fuel combustion and flaring have been well identified, but emission sources from venting and fugitive need to be improved. Moreover this study identified that to have more accurate national GHG inventory, the GHG calculation method might be different for each industry segment. This evaluation could improve the future national GHG inventory and as reference for the industry. National emission factors database for O&amp;G industry segment is highly suggested to be developed.

The increased human impact on the environment in the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries has resulted in global warming, aridization, desertification and reduced ability of ecosystems to adapt to changes and recover from disturbances. As a result, the world natural virgin forests have receded drastically and been replaced by lower quality second-growth forests over large areas. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations the warming will continue even further, which will lead to increased drought frequency in the next 30–40 years; as a result by the end of the century the world economy can lose up to 20 % of the global gross product. The paleontological data indicate that the climate on our planet has never been stable: periods of warming havealways been followed by periods of cooling and vice versa. Modern warming, in contrast to previous historical periods, is anthropogenic and in the European part of Russia occurs mainly in the cold season. Therefore, the amplitude of oscillation in the average annual temperature decreases, which significantly reduces the climate continentality. However, the increased mean annual air temperature in the Central Chernozem and Volga regions reflects the climate instability rather than the improved growth conditions. Thus, droughts are becoming increasingly frequent as well as abnormally warm and abnormally cold winters. Consequently, plants are suffering from increased influence of multiple stress factors. The results of the special studies enable us to conclude that the climate may significantly changein the foreseeable future. The need for preventive measures in order to minimize the effects of climate changes is indisputable, as only well-conceived actions can help such weatherdependent industries as forestry and agriculture to adapt to changing climatic conditions. It is obvious, that if we fail to take swift actions in this regard, climate changes in the foreststeppe and steppe zones of European Russia will inevitably have serious consequences for the state of forest ecosystems. These consequences might include changes in the species composition and biodiversity level of the forest ecosystems, increased risks of forest fires and mass spread of pests and forest diseases, increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and deterioration of economic conditions for forest management. Our studiesof trends and patterns in climate were carried out by observation of the air temperature regime and the amount of precipitation in the region over a long period of time. We relied on the available literature of Russian and international climate research organizations. The assessment of possible climate change was carried out using the IPCC methodology. We also took into account future greenhouse gas emissions and their concentration in the atmosphere. The study concluded that in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of the European part of Russia any scenario, even the mildest one, would lead to significant changes in climatic parameters by the end of the 21st century, which would inevitably affect the state of forest ecosystems. Forest fires, pests and forest diseases will become the key stress factors, which will have a paramount impact on managed forests. Currently, forest ecosystems have a fairly high adaptive capacity. However, in order to reduce the potential negative impact ofunfavourable factors we need to implement a variety of prevention and adaptation measures with different time frames for the implementation. Appropriate preventive actions timely made can reduce the possible negative effects of climate changes and help to keep the ecosystems balanced. It is important to note that sheer situational and tactical measures cannot increase the adaptive capacity of forest ecosystems and will, therefore, inevitably lead to significant economic losses.For citation: Semenov M.A., Vysotskiy A.A., Pashchenko V.I. Surface nitrous oxide concentrations and fluxes from water bodies of the agricultural watershed in Eastern China

Agriculture is one of major emission sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), an important greenhouse gas dominating stratospheric ozone destruction. However, indirect N2O emissions from agriculture watershed water surfaces are poorly understood. Here, surface-dissolved N2O concentration in water bodies of the agricultural watershed in Eastern China, one of the most intensive agricultural regions, was measured over a two-year period. Results showed that the dissolved N2O concentrations varied in samples taken from different water types, and the annual mean N2O concentrations for rivers, ponds, reservoir, and ditches were 30 ± 18, 19 ± 7, 16 ± 5 and 58 ± 69 nmol L−1, respectively. The N2O concentrations can be best predicted by the NO3−-N concentrations in rivers and by the NH4+-N concentrations in ponds. Heavy precipitation induced hot moments of riverine N2O emissions were observed during farming season. Upstream waters are hot spots, in which the N2O production rates were two times greater than in non-hotspot locations. The modeled watershed indirect N2O emission rates were comparable to direct emission from fertilized soil. A rough estimate suggests that indirect N2O emissions yield approximately 4% of the total N2O emissions yield from N-fertilizer at the watershed scale. Separate emission factors (EF) established for rivers, ponds, and reservoir were 0.0013, 0.0020, and 0.0012, respectively, indicating that the IPCC (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) default value of 0.0025 may overestimate the indirect N2O emission from surface water in eastern China. EF was inversely correlated with N loading, highlighting the potential constraints in the IPCC methodology for water with a high anthropogenic N input.

Methane correction factors for estimating emissions from aerobic wastewater treatment facilities based on field data in Mexico and on literature review

Wastewater treatment (WWT) may be an important source of methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas with significant global warming potential. Sources of CH4 emissions from WWT facilities can be found in the water and in the sludge process lines. Among the methodologies for estimating CH4 emissions inventories from WWT, the more adopted are the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which recommends default emission factors (Tier 1) depending on WWT systems. Recent published results show that well managed treatment facilities may emit CH4, due to dissolved CH4 in the influent wastewater; in addition, biological nutrient removal also will produce this gas in the anaerobic (or anoxic) steps. However, none of these elements is considered in the current IPCC guidelines. The aim of this work is to propose modified (and new) methane correction factors (MCF) regarding the current Tier 1 IPCC guidelines for CH4 emissions from aerobic treatment systems, with and without anaerobic sludge digesters, focusing on intertropical countries. The modifications are supported on in situ assessment of fugitive CH4 emissions in two facilities in Mexico and on relevant literature data. In the case of well-managed centralized aerobic treatment plant, a MCF of 0.06 (instead of the current 0.0) is proposed, considering that the assumption of a CH4-neutral treatment facility, as established in the IPCC methodology, is not supported. Similarly, a MCF of 0.08 is proposed for biological nutrient removal processes, being a new entry in the guidelines. Finally, a one-step straightforward calculation is proposed for centralized aerobic treatment plants with anaerobic digesters that avoids confusion when selecting the appropriate default MCF based on the Tier 1 IPCC guidelines.

A comparison of methods to quantify greenhouse gas emissions of cropping systems in LCA

Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are two important greenhouse gases (GHG) released from cropping systems. Their emissions can vary substantially with climate, soil, and crop management. While different methods are available to account for GHG emissions in life cycle assessments (LCA) of crop production, there are no standard procedures. In this study, the objectives were: (i) to compare several methods of estimating CO2 and N2O emissions for a LCA of cropping systems and (ii) to estimate the relative contribution of soil GHG emissions to the overall global warming potential (GWP) using results from a field experiment located in Manitoba, Canada. The methods were: (A) measurements; (B) Tier I and (C) Tier II IPCC (Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change) methodology, (D) a simple carbon model combined with Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Tier II methodology for soil N2O emissions, and (E) the DNDC (DeNitrification DeComposition) agroecosystem model. The estimated GWPs (−7.2–17 Mg CO2eq ha−1 y−1; −80 to 600 kg CO2eq GJ−1 y−1) were similar to previous results in North America and no statistical difference was found between GWP based on methods D and E and GWP based on observations. The five methods gave estimates of soil CO2 emissions that were not statistically different from each other, whereas for N2O emissions only DNDC estimates were similar to observations. Across crop types, all methods gave comparable CO2 and N2O emission estimates for perennial and legume crops, but only DNDC gave similar results with respect to observations for both annual and cereal crops. Whilst the results should be confirmed for other locations, the agroecosystem model and method D can be used, at certainly one selected site, in place of observations for estimating GHGs in agricultural LCA.

Agricultural land abandonment in Mediterranean environment provides ecosystem services via soil carbon sequestration

Abandonment of agricultural land leads to several consequences for ecosystem functions. Agricultural abandonment may be a significant and low cost strategy for carbon sequestration and mitigation of anthropogenic CO2 emissions due to the vegetation recovery and increase in soil organic matter. The aim of this study was to: (i) estimate the influence of different Soil Regions (areas characterized by a typical climate and parent material association) and Bioclimates (zones with homogeneous climatic regions and thermotype indices) on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics after agricultural land abandonment; and (ii) to analyse the efficiency of the agri-environment policy (agri-environment measures) suggested by the European Commission in relation to potential SOC stock ability in the Sicilian Region (Italy). In order to quantify the effects of agricultural abandonment on SOC, a dataset with original data that was sampled in Sicily and existing data from the literature were analysed according to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) methodology. Results showed that abandonment of cropland soils increased SOC stock by 9.03MgCha−1 on average, ranging from 5.4MgCha−1 to 26.7MgCha−1 in relation to the Soil Region and Bioclimate. The estimation of SOC change after agricultural use permitted calculation of the payments for ecosystem service (PES) of C sequestration after agricultural land abandonment in relation to environmental benefits, increasing in this way the efficiency of PES. Considering the 14,337ha of abandoned lands in Sicily, the CO2 emission as a whole was reduced by 887,745Mg CO2. Therefore, it could be concluded that abandoned agricultural fields represents a valid opportunity to mitigate agriculture sector emissions in Sicily.

Contribution of the cotton irrigation network to farm nitrous oxide emissions

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas, and agriculture is the dominant source of N2O-N emissions. The Australian cotton industry requires high inputs of N to maintain high lint quality and yields; however, over-fertilisation with N is symptomatic of the industry. Up to 3.5% of N fertiliser applied is lost directly from cotton fields as N2O gas. Excess N may also be lost via erosion, deep-drainage, leaching and runoff, and may subsequently form indirect N2O emissions. The estimate by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggests that 0.0025kg N2O-N is produced indirectly from groundwater and surface drainage for each kg N lost via runoff and leaching, although this estimate carries a large degree of uncertainty. This study is the first to address the lack of indirect N2O emission data from irrigated cotton-farming systems. Indirect emissions were determined from total N concentrations in irrigation runoff by using the IPCC emission factor and from measurements of dissolved N2O during the first four irrigations (October–December 2013). Total indirect N2O emissions from the surface of the irrigation network over 3 months when estimated by the dissolved-N2O method were 0.503±0.339kgha–1. By contrast, N2O emissions estimated by the IPCC methodology were 0.843±0.022kgha–1 irrigation surface area. Over the same period of measurement, direct land-surface emissions were 1.44kgN2O-Nha–1 field. Despite relatively high emissions per surface area, the irrigation network is only a minor component of the total farm area, and indirect emissions from the irrigation system contribute ~2.4–4% of the total N2O emissions and &lt;0.02% of the applied N fertiliser.

Methane emissions from stabilization ponds for municipal wastewater treatment in Mexico

Wastewater treatment (WWT) is applied for environmental protection and water reclamation. However, this activity has been identified as a source of methane (CH4), contributing to climate change. WWT (municipal and industrial) is estimated to produce 8 to 11% to overall CH4 emissions. In order to apply effective mitigation strategies in the water sector, a more precise inventory of CH4 emission should be accomplished. The application of the Tier 1 methodology in the Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) results in rough estimations, as default emission factors are used. An effort should be done for determining actual emission factors for the more representative treatment processes in a given region or country. In this work, a detailed inventory of CH4 emissions form municipal wastewater management in Mexico was obtained, based on the Tier 1 IPCC methodology. In addition, on-site CH4 emission measurements in five stabilization ponds (SP) were realized. The total CH4 emissions generated by municipal WWT in Mexico were 600.4 Gigagrams (Gg) for year 2010. Also, the IPCC (theoretical) estimations showed that CH4 emissions were overestimated if compared with the results obtained in the five sampled facilities. The on-site emission factors obtained showed wide variation as they are specific to each sampled system and to their particular environmental and operating conditions. In Mexico, the value of 0.431 kg CH4/kg BOD removed (0.110 kg CH4/m3 treated water) may be used for SP with good operational practices.

An estimation of regional emission intensity of coal mine methane based on coefficient‐intensity factor methodology using China as a case study

AbstractCoal mine methane (CMM) is an important component of greenhouse gas (GHG) control, clean energy, and coal mining safety. Because of the complicated geological conditions and non‐linear characteristics of CMM emissions, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calculation methodology of CMM emissions is based on a large emission factor range (10–25 m3/t), limiting the accuracy of the CMM emissions calculation. This paper studies CMM emission characteristics, and designs a coefficient‐intensity factor methodology integrated with IPCC methodology, to make a contribution to increase its applicability to regional circumstances. Using China as a case study, this paper uses 798 mines as samples, aiming to find a function of the relative gas emission rate and coal production. Through the calculation of the classification outflow coefficient and the regional emission intensity factor, the national emission intensity factor is about 9.176, which is lower than the minimum of IPCC emission factors for underground mining. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley &amp; Sons, Ltd

The influence of cultivation method on the soil’s organic carbon content calculations (Hungarian SOC reference values vs. IPCC defaults)

In the majority of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) studies the third most significant segment among the activities of the agricultural enterprises is the GHG emission from the soil. It is important to examine how this value could be reduced. Our research aims to find the modeling system which is able to provide us with accurate data regarding the difference of the several cultivation methods and easy to apply on the basis of the facts of practical. IPCC methodology has been applied in the calculation specified with the results of certain Hungarian studies. As an early outcome we have come to see that in comparison with the regular methodology our results showed more precise values. Where the IPCC demonstrates 1-2 t CO2e we were able to witness 8-10 t CO2e on soils with better humus content. Therefore we concluded that accurate values of the changes can only be calculated with the involvement of the local conditions.
