An Analysis of Students’ Lack of Interest in Learning English at VII Grade Students in SMPS IT Darul Ihsan

This study analyzes the factors contributing to seventh-grade students' lack of interest in learning English at SMPS IT Balik Batang. The objective is to identify and evaluate internal and external factors affecting students' motivation and engagement. This is the kind of mixed method research. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 37 students, examining aspects such as physical conditions, psychological readiness, family support, and classroom environment. The results of the internal factor indicate that 89.19% of students found English difficult to understand due to issues such as pronunciation challenges and unclear explanations from teachers. Furthermore, in the external factors, 86.48% of students reported that distractions from peers significantly impacted their ability to focus during lessons. The study concludes that addressing these factors through improved teaching methodologies and effective classroom management can enhance students' interest and performance in learning English. It emphasizes the importance of tailored educational strategies to meet the specific needs of students.

The method that information technology uses today has a big influence on many aspects of things in life, including education. TikTok has become one of the most well-liked social networking sites, especially among younger people. TikTok is a social media application that is increasingly popular among internet users. This application allows users to create and share short videos lasting 15 to 60 seconds (Mavellyno, 2023). Apart from being for entertainment, TikTok can also be a tool for disseminating information and learning. In the context of English learning, TikTok offers interesting opportunities to be integrated as a learning medium. This research will compare the effectiveness of using TikTok in increasing interest in learning English. This research aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the use of social media (TikTok) and high school students' interest in learning and how strong the relationship between them is. This research was conducted at SMAS YADIKA 13 TAMBUN by filling out a questionnaire filled in by grade 10 students. The data collection results obtained a calculated value of 0.693 and at a significance level of 5% a value of 0.230 was obtained. The results indicate that students' enthusiasm for learning is significantly impacted by their use of TikToK social media. The study's findings indicate that using social media can increase students' motivation in learning English.

Cultural synergy: Integrating Lamin Dayak Kenyah in English language learning – A need analysis study

This research aims to identify students' preferences and interests in learning English through Lamin Dayak Kenyah architectural buildings. This research is a mixed research that combines quantitative and qualitative data. The participants were 271 students and 33 English lecturers at universities. The methods used to collect data were classroom observations, surveys, and interviews to identify specific needs faced by students and lecturers when incorporating traditional houses into learning materials. The four fundamental English language skills—listening, reading, writing, speaking—are included in the results. In listening skills, students and lecturers prefer to learn and teach English by watching videos and listening to dialogues or conversations. In reading ability, students and lecturers want to learn with intensive reading, active reading, and critical reading. Regarding writing skills, students and lecturers prefer assignments such as writing descriptive texts and opinion articles. In speaking skills, students and lecturers want to learn through discussion and describing pictures orally. In choosing topics, students and lecturers are interested in the history of local architectural buildings, traditional house design, and the symbolism, color, and meaning of the carvings. Project-based learning (PBL) is the preferred learning method, and learning resources are drawn from videos and interactive learning tools. Future research can utilize these findings to design more targeted instructional materials, leveraging the results of the needs analysis that has been conducted in this study.

Factors Affecting Learners’ Motivation in English Language Education

This research investigates the factors influencing undergraduate students' interest in learning English at a public university. A quantitative methodology was used, with 250 students completing a 27-item Likert scale survey. The survey measured motivational factors, concerns, confidence, learning processes, benefits, attitudes, and self-regulation. Participants found it easy to participate because of the university's diverse student population and the researchers' affiliation. Questionnaires were distributed in class, with explanations in both Khmer and English to ensure clarity. The study revealed the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on English language learning in the Cambodian context. Recommendations are provided to assist educators and policymakers in improving motivation strategies and students' language proficiency for academic success.

Use of Recitation Input to Improve Students Writing

In learning English, English writing is an important way to cultivate students' innovative thinking and pragmatic ability, and it is also one of the ways to test the results of English teaching. Recitation is not only an important way of language input, but also the basis and premise of language learning. Writing is a comprehensive language output activity, which is based on recitation and can be regarded as an effective language learning strategy for students to develop basic writing skills. Therefore, in English teaching, text recitation input can be used as the basis to help students develop basic writing skills, increase students' interest in English learning, and improve their English level. This paper briefly summarizes the theoretical basis of recitation input and its role in English writing. Based on this, it discusses the effective strategies for its specific application in order to improve the effectiveness of English writing teaching.

The Application of Comic-Based Learning Media in Elementary School English Subject

This study aims to analyze the effect of comic-based learning media on learning motivation and English comprehension of grade 4 students at SDS Permata Bangsa. The background of this study is the students' low interest in learning English caused by lack of motivation and less interactive learning media. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires and observation. The research subjects consisted of 12 grade 4 students with the duration of two learning sessions of 30 minutes each. The questionnaire was distributed at the end of session 2. The questionnaire consists of 9 likert scale statements followed by open-ended questions to provide reasons for each statement. The results showed that the use of comic media significantly improved students' motivation and English language skills. Students felt more motivated and enthusiastic in learning, and felt easier to understand the lessons. The comic incorporated two grammar: Simple Past Tense and Comparative along with vocabulary that focuses on names of animals. This study concludes that comic media can be an effective and interesting learning tool to increase students' motivation and understanding in learning English. Further research on the use of comics in inclusive classrooms are also indicated.

Students’ Motivation To Learn English As Foreign Language (Efl): A Case Study

This research aims to understand the factors influencing students' motivation to learn English as a foreign language (EFL) and their impact on academic performance. The study uses qualitative methods, including interviews and questionnaires, with a sample of grade 7 junior high school students in West Jakarta. The results show that intrinsic factors, such as interest in learning English and self-desire to achieve high academic achievement, are more motivating. However, extrinsic factors, such as teacher praise or parental expectations, can also influence intrinsic motivation. Thus, intrinsic factors have a more significant influence on students' motivation, while extrinsic factors also play a role. Understanding these factors can help build learning independence and improve students' academic performance.

Increasing Interest in English Teaching through “Picture Cards” in Class X IPS MA Al-Djufri Pamekasan

This study aims to increase students’ interest in learning English by using picture card media through Classroom Action Research (PTK) method. The subjects of the study were students of class X IPS MA Al-Djufri Pamekasan who experienced low interest in learning English. This research was conducted in two cycles, where each cycle consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data collected through observation and questionnaires were analyzed to determine the development of students’ interest in learning. The results showed that the use of picture cards could significantly increase students’ interest in learning. In cycle I, the level of students’ interest in learning was recorded at 60%, which indicated a lack of active involvement and motivation in learning English. After the implementation of picture cards in cycle II, students’ interest in learning increased to 83%. This increase can be seen from the increased participation of students in teaching and learning activities, enthusiasm in discussions, and better ability to understand the material. The application of picture cards proved to be effective in attracting students’ attention and facilitating the understanding of English materials, especially vocabulary and sentence structure. This study is in line with visual learning theory which states that the use of visual media can improve students’ memory and engagement. Thus, the use of picture cards as learning media is recommended for English teachers to improve students’ interest and learning outcomes. Further research is expected to explore the use of other media in foreign language learning.

An Empirical Study on Online and Offline Blended Teaching Mode of College English Reading Teaching

Online and offline blended teaching mode is a new teaching mode which is in line with the needs of college English teaching reform and can effectively stimulate students’ interest in English learning. In college Engligh teaching, the improvement of reading ability is crucial for students to acquire knowledge. Moreover, English reading ability is the premise of developing other language skills. College English reading teaching has achieved a certain success at present, but there are still a lot of problems. For some students, their reading ability is still low, and their analytical ability is poor, which are not conducive to improve students’ listening, speaking, writing and translation abilities. Due to these problems, with the guidance of production-oriented approach (POA), this paper makes an empirical study on online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching for non-English majors in our university by means of data analysis and questionnaire survey. This paper tries to explore the following questions: 1) Whether online and offline blended teaching mode can improve English reading ability of non-English majors? 2) Does online and offline blended teaching mode affect students’ learning motivation, learning attitude and learning behavior? 3) What are the advantages of online and offline blended teaching mode? Through the study, it is found that online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching can effectively stimulate students’ interest in English learning and improve their English academic performance. On the other hand, it is also found that online and offline blended teaching mode has higher requirements for teachers’ teaching ability. This study has practical significance for improving online and offline blended teaching mode of college English reading teaching and enhancing the reading ability of non-English majors.

CASE STUDY: ANALYSIS OF FOURTH GRADERS’ THINKING LEVELS ON ENGLISH VOCABULARY USING SMARTBOOK BASED ON BLOOM’S TAXONOMY

The use of technology can serve as an attractive tool for students to enhance their abilities, one of which is by utilizing a smartbook that contains materials and practice questions packaged in various digital platforms. This article aims to identify the challenges students face in understanding English vocabulary based on Bloom's Taxonomy. Bloom's Taxonomy has been widely used as a reference to measure students' abilities in the learning process, particularly in the cognitive aspect. The method used in this research is qualitative with a case study approach. The respondents of this study were 7 students, the homeroom teacher, and the fourth-grade English teacher at SDN Sawojajar 6, Malang City. Data were collected through interviews and documentation. The results of the study indicate that students face challenges in solving medium to HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) level questions due to their low interest in learning English, limited use of gadgets at school, and unfamiliarity with HOTS-type questions in English subjects.

Research on the Strategies of Using Situational Teaching Method to Improve Primary School Students' Interest in English Learning

With the development of science and technology, the information age of education has been produced, and the teaching based on situational teaching has also been favored by the majority of teachers. The situational teaching method based on stimulating students 'emotion plays a very important role in mastering students' language knowledge and improving their language ability, especially in primary school English teaching. This paper aims to discuss how to improve pupils' interest in English learning by using situational teaching method. Interest is the best motivation of learning, especially for primary school students, interest excitation is crucial to improve English learning efficiency and skills, can to a certain extent to mobilize students' classroom participation, situational teaching method as an effective means of teaching, by creating vivid and specific situation in class, make the students learn English knowledge in the situation, exercise oral English expression ability, to enhance the enthusiasm of English learning and self-confidence.

The Effectiveness Of Rosetta Stone On Vocabulary Mastery Through Seventh Grade At Smp Islam Al Azhaar Tulungagung In Academic Year 2023/2024

English language proficiency has an important role in communication, daily life, and academic pursuits. English language proficiency opens up future opportunities such as employment and higher education, which often require proficiency standards such as TOEFL or IELTS. Even though it is a compulsory subject in school, many have difficulty learning English. The four main skills to be developed are reading, writing, listening, and speaking, all of which are essential for communicative competence and vocabulary mastery. In response to these challenges, educators are increasingly using technology such as the Rosetta Stone app. This app is known for its Dynamic Immersion and TruAccent features that make learning interactive and effective. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the use of the Rosetta Stone application on the vocabulary mastery of grade VII students at Al Azhar Islamic Junior High School Tulungagung. The experimental research method was used by dividing the research subjects into two groups, namely the experimental group that used the Rosetta Stone application and the control group that did not use it. The results showed that students' vocabulary scores increased significantly from 73.20 to 90.80 after using this application. Statistical analysis with paired sample t-test confirmed the effectiveness of the application in improving students' vocabulary mastery and interest in learning English. The study confirms the positive impact of technological interventions such as Rosetta Stone in improving English language skills, validating their efficacy through rigorous statistical analysis and practical results.

Metode Pembelajaran English Fun Dengan Short Movie Di SDN 004 Sepaku

The English Fun learning method is one of the methods for teaching English. English is one of the most widely used languages in the world across various fields. The lack of interest among children in learning English is very concerning. The implementation team aims to introduce an enjoyable and engaging English learning method, especially for elementary school children. The program conducted is called English Fun, utilizing short movies as its medium. This program aims to increase children's interest in learning English through the English Fun method. The activity was carried out on February 15, 2024, at SDN 004 Sepaku, Desa Bukit Raya. This activity was targeted at 36 third-grade students. The results of the community service activity conducted at SDN 004 Sepaku provided significant and necessary benefits to the students at the school, namely an increase in their interest in learning English.

Study of the Influence of Teachers Teaching Style on Students' Interest in Learning English

Learning English at the high school level often faces various challenges, especially when it comes to attracting students. Based on initial observations at SMA Swasta Indonesia Membangun Medan for the 2023/2024 school year, it was found that many students in grades x2 and x1 felt less interested in learning English. Factors that may cause this lack of interest include material difficulties, lack of relevance of the material to daily life, multiple intelligences of students, teaching style of teachers and techniques of delegators in teaching. The research methodology used is questionnaires, interviews, and data collection. The types of research used are qualitative data and quantitative data. The findings of this study also aim to determine the influence of teachers' teaching styles on students' interest in learning English. Based on the results of research through interviews with teachers, the factors that affect students' lack of interest in learning English are because students have dominance or multiple intelligence in certain fields. And the results of the questionnaire given summarized that students' interest in learning was in the category of quite good, namely 69.03% out of 50 students. And for the delegator teaching style technique, it is done during the group discussion method because in the discussion students can work collaboratively and become teachers with each other

Movies as Tools for Enhancing ESL Learning: Insights into Students’ Emotions and Experiences

Numerous studies have reported that ESL students often struggle with poor motivation, low self-confidence, and high levels of anxiety. Watching movies has a strong potential to ignite these students’ interest in learning English, thereby enhancing their language learning journey. However, integrating movies into language learning is only effective if it positively impacts students’ anxiety, motivation and self-confidence. This study explores university students’ emotional factors along with their experiences to determine whether movies enhance their language learning. An online questionnaire via Google Forms was distributed to 76 participants, including 43 students from the LG241 program (Malay Language for Professional Communication) and 33 from the LG242 program (Arabic Language for Professional Communication) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam. Data were extracted and analysed using SPPS version 29 via descriptive statistics. Results showed that movies created a calm and non-intimidating learning atmosphere, fostering increased self-motivation and self-esteem while reducing anxiety. Students also reported improved language skills, as movies provided real-life examples of English usage and immersive learning environments. This study demonstrates that integrating movies into English lessons can improve students’ emotions and experiences, making language learning more effective. Collecting ESL students’ feedback on using movies for language learning helps educators identify areas for improvement. By incorporating students’ perspectives, educators can develop more effective teaching methods, ultimately enhancing the learning experience through unconventional means.

The Application of Situational Teaching Method in Middle School English Reading Classes

With the deepening of the new curriculum standards and quality education in the secondary education stage, secondary school English teaching no longer only focuses on students’ English grades and vocabulary reserves, but also emphasizes the cultivation of students’ English application ability. English reading is an important part of middle school English education. In order to improve the quality and effectiveness of middle school English reading teaching, teachers should use emerging teaching methods such as situational teaching to further stimulate students’ interest and enthusiasm in English learning. This article will analyze the application value and principles of situational teaching methods in middle school English reading classes and explore the application strategies of situational teaching methods in middle school English reading classes.

The Influence of Johnny’s Communication Center YouTube Vlogs on English Learning Interest Among NCTzen in Indonesia

This study aims to determine whether or not Johnny's Communication Center YouTube vlogs have an influence on English learning interest among NCTzen in Indonesia. This article uses a quantitative approach and survey research method. The data collection technique used a questionnaire distributed through social media X (Twitter) to around 100 NCTzen community who are still in high school and watch Johnny's Communication Center on YouTube. The results showed that Johnny's Communication Center YouTube vlogs are a learning media that can increase interest in learning English. Johnny's Communication Center YouTube vlogs significantly and positively influence the interest in English learning among NCTzen in Indonesia.

ENGLISH MOVIES AS A MOTIVATIONAL TOOL IN ENHANCING STUDENTS' LISTENING SKILLS

Movies have been examined as one of the most exciting media that can help students learn listening skills. However, there is limited study on using English movies to enhance students' motivation in listening skills. This research aimed to determine students' perceptions of using movies as a motivational tool in enhancing students' listening skills. This research used qualitative study. The subjects of this study were 31 eleventh-grade students of class BP A at SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan, Yogyakarta. In collecting data, the researchers used semi-structured interviews where open-ended questions allowed the researchers to freely ask the students and a questionnaire comprising ten items related to students’ responses regarding their motivation in learning to listen. Researchers prepared and organized research data for analysis, which involved compiling and organizing recordings into transcripts and participant observation notes. Most students showed that they were more interested and motivated in learning to listen to English movies. The students felt fun, interested, enjoyed, and more focused during the learning process. They got new vocabulary and understood what was being said in the movies. Pedagogically, this study implies that teachers should consider attractive learning media, especially for teaching listening, to enhance students’ motivation and interest in learning English.

Designing Learning Media Based on ICT for Student’s Reading Skills of Tenth Grade SMK TI Annajiyyah Bahrul Ulum

This study aims to design MRELISH (Mukhlisoh Reading English) based on ICT, to improve the tenth-grade Vocational High School students’ interest in English learning, especially reading skill. This study used Research & Development (RND) method with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. In the Analyze phase, the researchers used two instruments, those are interviews and questionnaires. The results from interview data stated that MRELISH English teachers approved MRELISH media to be designed and developed. while the results of the students’ questionnaire stated that 69% of the total number of students agreed that MRELISH media was developed and applied in their English learning. In the Development and Implementation phases, the researchers used some instruments to collect data: interviews, questionnaires, observations, and documentation. The result of questionnaires from the material validation was 82% in the “very good” category and the result of the media validation was 92% in the “very good” category. After being implemented to students, the final result of the implementation was 84% which was categorized as “very good”. Based on those results, it can be concluded that MRELISH (Mukhlisoh Reading English) application was suitable to use in English learning to improve student’s reading skills in Vocational High School.
