515 Implementation of a Translational Science Research Center in a high education level institution in Colombia - Latin America: Unisabana Center for Translational Science (UCTS)

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: To establish and develop a high-level, dynamic, and self-sustainable Translational Science – research center in Colombia that promotes and articulates collaborative participation among different disciplines at Universidad de La Sabana to generate impactful solutions in health to transfer the knowledge to the local community. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: With the support of core units of the University, internal funding was given for the establishment of the Research Center. An internal call was performed for recruiting researchers for multiple disciplines interested in joining the UCTS. After the researchers were selected, training of the research community in translational science and funding acquisition was performed towards the objective of interdisciplinary projects with impact in the local community. Project management strategies have been used for the follow-up of the advancements of the implementation of the UCTS. Operational structure and business plan for future self-sustainability are being designed. UCTS is proposed as an articulating party among different actors in clinics, research, and industry, for science and funding management. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: As an starting point, 8 research groups of different disciplines of the University have been integrated with the UCTS, increasing the research capacity in translational science. Internal administrative processes have been articulated within the institution and unified processes for international grants applications have been established in order to optimize the funding acquisition and management. Training programs for the research community, and community engagement activities have been offered as well. Networking relationships have been strengthened among the researchers enhancing international collaborations. Novel research projects are being designed towards real solutions in health for the local community, promoting the transference of knowledge from the benchside to the community. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The implementation of the UCTS led to the integration of disciplines within the University, towards new research projects with common interests for the local community. It has been an enriched experience using the project management approach, fulfilling a huge milestone for the University, aligned with the internal strategic priorities

The Indonesian nation has Pancasila, Pancasila is a national character which now among students of the millennial generation has begun to fade the awareness to live it. Starting from the first to the fifth precepts, all of them cover various lines of life lived by humans, therefore, we should reaffirm this national identity, through Pancasila. which is integrated in the TPACK-based mathematics subject at SMK Negeri 1 Karanggayam, Kebumen Regency, both in planning, implementation and evaluation, program influence and factors related to character education strengthening programs that are integrated in mathematics subjects at SMK Negeri 1 Karanggayam, Kebumen Regency. Research this has been done using the type of library research (library research). The source used is scientific literature in the form of books, journals, scientific articles related to research topics. Next, the data were analyzed using the content analysis method. The profile of Pancasila students is the character and abilities that are built in daily life and lived in students through the culture of the education unit, intracurricular, projects to strengthen the profile of Pancasila students, and extracurriculars. The Pancasila Student Strengthening Project is an interdisciplinary project. The project at SMK Negeri 1 Karanggayam carries the theme Engineering and technology with the sub-theme of ethics in digital media in the odd semester of 2022. Awareness about using the internet properly emerges as educational material for students so that each student can maintain their attitude, behavior and interactions in social media

Creating a STEAM project with students as an indicator of the effectiveness of training future biologists

Relevance. In the modern world, biology is becoming an increasingly complex and multidimensional science that encompasses numerous subfields. Therefore, future specialists in this field need to possess not only deep knowledge of core disciplines but also a broad outlook, including competencies in technology, mathematics, and the arts. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of training focused on the creation of STEAM projects in terms of training future biologists. Methodology. The methodology of the study included the analysis of 41 projects conducted by 11 teachers of higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan for 5 years. Project classification methods included such aspects as the integration of educational material, problem-solving, search for answers to scientific questions, development of technical devices, cooperation of students, biological content of projects, high involvement and quality of assessment, and creativity. Data collection was conducted through direct observations in classrooms and at events and conducting interviews with teachers. Results. The results showed that specialised teachers of biological disciplines, as a rule, avoided transdisciplinary projects, while teachers of non-biological disciplines often overlooked biological content in interdisciplinary projects. Biology teachers often avoided teaching methods based on device development, but they emphasised high standards of knowledge and fostered a positive perception of their disciplines through projects that involved discussion and meaningful feedback. Conclusions. The research findings indicate that combining conventional teaching methods with integrated approaches to delivering the material can be a way to solidify fundamental biological knowledge necessary for further, more advanced education, and prepare students to apply their knowledge and skills in practical situations. The results obtained can be used in pedagogical practice for the effective implementation of project-oriented learning. Teaching Practice on Sámi Topics in Schools: A Mixed Methods Study from the South Saepmie Region of Norway

The Norwegian primary and secondary school curriculum from 2020 (LK20) clearly states that the history, cultural life, and rights of the indigenous Sámi people should be included in the school practice. This study addresses how objectives in the subject-specific plans with Sámi content are taught and explores, in addition, teachers’ experiences and reflections on these topics. To investigate this, an electronic questionnaire with open and closed questions was sent to all primary and secondary schools in the South Saepmie region of Norway. The results indicate that a high degree of the respondents include Sámi culture and tradition in their teaching, and there is a variation in their teaching from happenings on February 6th to interdisciplinary projects. The teachers report a lack of competence and call for a greater emphasis on Sámi topics in the teacher education programs. A lack of available teaching aids is experienced even though many found other resources locally and, e.g., on the internet. They experienced, however, an increase in the availability of teaching aids in recent years. The respondents pointed out, however, that inadequate teacher competence and a lack of teaching aids strongly limited the respondents’ possibility to teach Sámi topics in school. Consequently, more teaching aids should be developed, and Sámi content in continuing and teacher education programs should be strengthened.

Structured screening for sporadic breast cancer

The aim of secondary prevention of breast cancer is to detect the disease at the earliest curable stage and thus to reduce breast cancer-specific mortality. To this end, the nationwide population-based mammography screening program (MSP) was set up in Germany in 2005 in addition to an interdisciplinary prevention project for high-risk groups. Overview of the current state of the MSP, the upcoming age expansion, and potential further developments. Narrative review article with topic-guided literature and data search. Approximately 50% of the 70,500 new cases of breast cancer that occur each year are related to the age group of the MSP. 10years after introduction of the MSP, the incidence of advanced breast cancer stages and breast cancer-related mortality of the screening target group have steadily decreased by about one quarter, while no relevant trends were seen in the neighboring age groups at the population level. The MSP has effectively contributed to areduction of breast cancer mortality. With the expansion of the age groups to 45-75years, more women have access to structured, quality assured screening. With the use of advanced stratifications and diagnostics as well as artificial intelligence, the MSP could be further optimized.

My Silent Story: Conflicted Memories, Silences and Intergenerational Traumas.

This article aims to present the interdisciplinary project "My Story from Silence", conceived in 2022. The project represents a pioneering effort in assembling individuals from diverse communities, characterized by varying ethnic, national, and migratory backgrounds, along a historically dynamic border. Its primary objective was to provide a platform for these participants to articulate and share narratives previously shrouded in silence, offering insights into their historical pasts. Emphasizing reciprocal dialogue for the first time, the initiative fostered an environment where participants engaged in the dual act of narrating their own experiences and attentively listening to the narratives of others. These memories were explored in group workshops on both sides of the border. By combining elements of cultural anthropology fieldwork and analytical psychology, the workshops attempted to address hitherto unaddressed traumas and silent personal memories linked to major traumatic historical events such as fascism and Istrian exodus through the narratives of individuals. Three vignettes will illustrate the workshop dynamic and our Jungian understanding of it.

Constructing shared understanding of complex interdisciplinary problems: Epistemic games in interdisciplinary teamwork

ABSTRACT Background Constructing shared understanding of complex interdisciplinary problems is one of the most challenging aspects of interdisciplinary teamwork. How this process unfolds is under-researched, making it esoteric and difficult to scaffold. This paper aims to provide an articulated and nuanced account of what is involved in student teams’ construction of shared understanding of complex interdisciplinary problems. Methods The study combines the theoretical lens of epistemic games with an ecological analytical perspective. Drawing on the analysis of ethnographic cases, it explores how four graduate student teams construct shared understanding of complex problems during interdisciplinary projects. Findings Construction of shared understanding is a multifaceted and dynamic process that extends over the entire problem-solving activity. It relies on epistemic moves that explicate and juxtapose different perspectives and connect abstract ideas with knowledge grounded in students’ experiences and contexts. The pursuits students engage in, when creating shared understanding, reveal epistemic differences related to formulation of the interdisciplinary problem and what constitutes trustworthy knowledge. Contribution The paper contributes to the literature on the nature of students’ construction of shared understanding of complex interdisciplinary problems revealing critical recurrent moves. It also extends earlier conceptualizations of epistemic games as primarily discourse games and demonstrates that they are profoundly multimodal and distributed.

"Now once again this idea of yours (…) how does it sound when I say that?" - Changing the perspective: how coach's questioning practices elicit self-reflecting processes in clients.

Drawing upon the transformative power of questions, the paper investigates questioning sequences from authentic coaching data to examine the systematic use of a particular succession of formulation and question and its impact on inviting self-reflection processes in the client and eliciting change. The object of investigation in this paper are therefore questioning sequences in which a coach asks a question immediately after a rephrasing or relocating action, prompting the client to respond in an explicit or implicit way. The coach hereby shifts the focus to a hypothetical scenario, prompting the client to change her perspective on the matter and reflect on her own statements, ideas and attitudes from an outside perspective. The paper aims to contribute to closing the research gap of the change potential of reflection-stimulating action techniques used by coaches, by investigating one of many ways of how questions can be powerful tools to invite a change of perspective for the client. The study focuses on one coaching process consisting of three sessions between a female coach and a female client, utilizing a single case study approach. The data collection was part of the interdisciplinary project "Questioning Sequences in Coaching", comprising 14 authentic coaching processes. The analysis follows Peräkylä's Transformative Sequences model, examining the first position including the formulation and the subsequent question, the client's response, and the coach's reaction to the response. On a practical level, the main purpose of this paper is not to contribute to the many ways practical literature recommends coaches how to do their work and how to ask questions, but rather to show in what ways the elicitation of self-reflection processes in clients has been achieved by other coaches in authentic coaching sessions.

Developing competences in a cross-border interdisciplinary project: student and teacher perceptions of the Ocean i3 project

The aim of this research was to analyse students’ perceptions of the competences developed by taking part in the cross-border interdisciplinary Ocean i3 project. The objective of the Ocean i3 project is for students to acquire learning, research and sustainability competences while contributing to reduce plastic pollution along the Basque-Aquitaine coast. The project uses a Challenge-Based Learning approach in which social actors from the surrounding cross-border area propose challenges that students have to solve. The research methodology used is exploratory and descriptive; for the data collection qualitative and quantitative instruments have been used. The main result is that students and teachers perceive that the former have improved the sustainability competences engaging and working on the project. Mostly they perceive to have developed active listening, analysis, creativity and negotiation competences.

African city diplomacy in global climate mobility debates

AbstractWhile researchers have paid growing attention to transnational city engagement in both the policy fields of migration and climate change, there is a dearth of studies exploring how cities claim agency and start acting in emerging global climate mobility debates. Moreover, city diplomacy research tends to focus predominantly on city actors from the global North. We aim to address this research bias and advance academic debates by exploring African city diplomacy in global climate mobility debates. Specifically, we examine the question: How do African cities claim recognition as relevant actors in global dialogues on climate mobility, and what kind of action do they take? To find answers, we draw on a role theory framework analysing empirical research undertaken within an international, interdisciplinary research project.

Understanding complex processes better-A case study on increasing patient safety and efficiency in a central operating room

Various professional groups are involved in the daily work of the central operating room with the aim of providing the best possible treatment for each individual using modern medical technology (sociotechnical system) in acost-effective manner. Ensuring perioperative patient safety is of particular importance. At the same time, the efficient use of the central operating room is essential for the economic success of ahospital. Preoperative preparation is acomplex process with many substeps that are often difficult to manage. Historically, the focus has been on retrospective learning from errors and incidents. More recent approaches take asystemic view. Acentral idea is to consider the mostly positive course of treatment and the adjustments to daily work that are currently required by the people involved (Safety-II). By taking greater account of how the many components of the system interact, processes can be better understood and specific measures derived. This strengthens the system's ability to adapt to changes and disturbances, thus ensuring that goals are achieved. The functional resonance analysis method (FRAM) is an internationally recognized method for modelling work as done compared to work as imagined. This paper presents the application of FRAM to preoperative preparation in a major regional hospital. Is FRAM suitable for improving process understanding in preoperative preparation? An interdisciplinary project team identified relevant functions of preoperative preparation through document analysis and walkthroughs. Based on this, more than 30guided interviews were conducted with functionaries. The results were presented graphically and specific information, such as safety-related statements or reasons for the variability of functions, were also presented textually. In the next phase, statements were evaluated and compared with the target model and the job descriptions. The FRAM revealed the process as acomplex network of relationships. During the modelling process, avarying degree of centrality and variability of certain functions became apparent. From the observations, the project team selected those with high relevance for patient safety and for the efficiency of the overall process in order to prioritize starting points for deriving measures to increase resilience. These starting points relate either to single functions, such as surgical site marking or to multiple functions that are variable in their execution, such as delays due to nonsynchronized duty times. The FRAM conducted provides valuable new insights into the functioning of complex sociotechnical systems that go far beyond classical linear methods. The awareness of operational processes gained and the resulting dynamic view of interactions within the system enable specific measures to be derived that promote resilient behavior and reduce critical variability, thus contributing to increased patient safety and efficiency.

A first-year integrated project-based course: Students' experience and engagement working in teams amid COVID-19

The Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University implemented its largest curricular change through the PIVOT. First-year engineering students now take a 13-unit ENGINEER 1P13 that integrates multiple interdisciplinary projects allowing students to apply first year engineering theory and knowledge directly. This paper examines the teamwork and collaboration skills of ENGINEER 1P13 students by analyzing to what extent the course’s pedagogical approach helped students engage with their team, achieve the course learning outcomes and master the related skills. Data from three student surveys show that most students reported a high level of engagement with their team/group and agreed that they achieved the learning outcomes and mastered skills related to teamwork abilities. Also, students valued the opportunity to work in teams to meet new people and improve their overall learning experience. However, students also mentioned they struggled with how to address an imbalance in team member contributions to the projects.

Visual Knowledge Graph Construction of Self-directed Learning Ability Driven by Interdisciplinary Projects

INTRODUCTION: The application of interdisciplinary information technology is becoming more and more widespread, and the application of visual knowledge mapping in the process of students' independent learning is also becoming more and more important; therefore, in this context, takes the history discipline as a starting point to study the construction of visual knowledge mapping of students' independent learning ability under the drive of interdisciplinary projects.OBJECTIVES: To enrich the means of student independent learning aids in China's history discipline and enhance the modernization level of China's history discipline construction; to solve the problem that student independent learning ability under the drive of China's interdisciplinary projects can not be visualized and observed; to further improve China's distance education environment and to enhance the educational capacity of the history discipline.METHODS: Firstly, the relevant modeling uses a visual knowledge map. Secondly, the neural network model assesses students' independent learning ability in history learning. Finally, the convolutional neural network model is used to assess the efficiency of the knowledge map.RESULTS: The Sig and Tanh function models have better robustness, and the ReLU and PReLU functions have weaker interdisciplinary driving performance. However, the iterative Knownledge1 and Knownledge2 models have better robustness of the visualized knowledge graph.CONCLUSION: In studying history, the interdisciplinary, project-driven, and independent learning ability of students could be more vital, and our country should vigorously develop new information network technology to improve the status quo of history discipline education in China.

Catalyzing Clinically Driven Undergraduate Design Projects at the Nexus of Engineering, Medicine, and Business.

Design projects, particularly those related to assistive technology, offer unparalleled educational opportunities for undergraduate students to synthesize engineering knowledge with a clinically driven need to produce a product that can improve quality of life. Such projects are most effective when engineering, clinical, and business perspectives are considered throughout. However, the logistics of successfully implementing such interdisciplinary projects can be challenging. This paper presents an auto-ethnography of 12 undergraduate design team projects in assistive technology performed by 87 students from five majors (including engineering, business, and clinical students) over the course of 5 years. The overarching goal of our work was to establish an undergraduate integrated design experience at a university in the absence of a dedicated biomedical engineering major. The focus of this experience was to foster the creation of student-led prototypes to address real-world problems for people with disabilities while keeping commercialization potential at the forefront throughout. Student participation demonstrated a clear enthusiasm for completing biomedical engineering-themed projects. To encourage the implementation of similar approaches at universities where a biomedical engineering major does not exist, we identify common obstacles that can arise and present strategies for mitigating these challenges, as well as effective approaches for catalyzing cross-disciplinary collaborations. High impact practices include close involvement of end-users in the design process; cross-disciplinary team composition (e.g., engineering, business, and health sciences students); and choosing cross-disciplinary leads for project management. Teams experienced a high degree of success with all 12 teams producing functional prototypes. We conclude that at universities that do not offer a biomedical engineering major, health-focused integrated design experiences offer students important interdisciplinary perspectives, including a holistic approach to project implementation. Furthermore, for many students, these projects ultimately served as a gateway to subsequent careers and graduate study in biomedical engineering.

Massacres in the Arnsberg Forest (abstract)

In recent years, an historical reappraisal by one of us (MW) has been carried out on one of the worst crimes outside of prisons and concentration camps committed in Germany by the SS and Wehrmacht in the final months of the Second World War. In the Arnsberg Forest near Warstein and Meschede (southern Westphalia, western Germany), 208 forced labourers were massacred by the 'Division for Vengeance' (Division zur Vergeltung) of SS General Hans Kammler in March 1945. In the course of this joint project, archaeological research conducted by the Olpe Department of the LWL-Archäologie für Westfalen (Westphalian Archaeological Heritage Service) has pinpointed the exact location of the crime scenes and provided clues for the reconstruction of the course of events in the field (Warstein Langenbachtal, Suttrop, Meschede-Eversberg). It has also enabled the recovery of finds belonging to both the victims and perpetrators. We have also been able to locate and examine the two temporary cemeteries (Warstein Melkeplätzchen, Suttrop). This has provided information about the history of exhumation of the victims in 1964, as well as clarifying the whereabouts of the Soviet obelisk from the Melkeplätzchen, the provisional cemetery of the Langenbach victims located close to the crime scene. This work has also allowed a follow-up search in the temporary cemetery in Suttrop for seven victims who, according to the exhumation documents of 1964, are presumably still lying there. Between 2018 and 2021, almost all of aspects addressed above could be clarified with new insights gained. Our results were summarised at the EAC conference in Bonn 2023 (although not published in this theme). Several publications already report on them and they are listed below. In addition to several German language publications, there is also an extensive English language publication (Baales et al. 2022) where the essential aspects of the interdisciplinary project are presented. In addition, the historical context, research project and numerous images are presented on several websites listed below.

A Study on Talent Cultivation Strategies for Film and Television Photography and Production Professionals Oriented to Sports Specialty Students in an Interdisciplinary Context

With the rapid development of the film and television industry and the increasing prosperity of the sports industry, interdisciplinary education plays an increasingly important role in talent training. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to develop an effective talent cultivation strategy for film and television photography and production majors in the interdisciplinary context, combined with the characteristics of sports speciality students. Through in-depth analysis of the advantages and shortcomings of sports special students, combined with the actual needs of film and television photography and production majors, this paper puts forward a series of cultivation strategies, with a view to cultivating composite talents with sports literacy and film and television technology dual capabilities. Sports speciality students have good physical quality and teamwork ability, and these qualities are especially important in the process of film and television production. However, they may have deficiencies in artistic expression and technical operation. Therefore, to address this situation, this paper suggests increasing the proportion of artistic aesthetics and technical practice in the curriculum, and enhancing students' comprehensive quality through project practice and interdisciplinary cooperation. Emphasis on the combination of sports and film and television. By offering special courses such as filming of sports events and production of sports documentaries, students can gain an in-depth understanding of the operation and filming techniques of sports events while learning film and television technology. In addition, through the introduction of industry experts and off-campus practical training, students' practical operation ability and industry adaptability are enhanced. Focus on cultivating students' innovative thinking and cross-border co-operation ability. Students are encouraged to participate in interdisciplinary projects to develop their ability to solve complex problems and their sense of innovation, so as to better adapt to the development needs of the film and television industry. Through the above strategies, this paper expects to provide a more comprehensive education for sports speciality students majoring in film and television photography and production, and to cultivate high-quality composite talents with both sports literacy and proficiency in film and television technology.

The Interdisciplinary Doula Project: Innovations in Nursing Clinical Education.

People giving birth report overwhelmingly positive experiences with nursing students acting as doulas. However, no programs report on improving diversity among students, pregnant people, and curricula. This article describes the Interdisciplinary Doula Project, a program to enhance diverse perspectives and clinical skills of university students. Nursing (n = 21, 77.8%) and other health students (n = 6, 22.2%) completed doula training, diversity seminars, and 36 hours of intrapartum care. Seven nursing students were hired to work on labor and delivery upon graduation. This innovative program may increase registered nurses trained to provide culturally congruent labor support for vulnerable pregnant populations.

The Virtual Geriatric Assessment Interdisciplinary Team Project: Interprofessional Geriatric Training Against the Backdrop of COVID-19.

Interprofessional geriatric education programs enhance trainees' knowledge of older adults, and the valuable contributions health and social care practitioners make to their well-being when specialists work collaboratively. In response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, in-person geriatric interprofessional education (IPE) programs were redesigned for virtual delivery. Nineteen virtual programs were held between September 2020 and December 2022. Of the 369 health and social care trainees who participated, 67.2% completed both pre- and post-program surveys. Survey instruments included the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICASS), which measures perceptions associated with patient-centered, team-based, collaborative care. Significant differences were obtained across ICASS domains, including communication, conflict management/resolution, and team functioning, suggesting that virtual programs may enhance attitudes and perceived abilities for interprofessional collaborative practice. Furthermore, participants' perceived understanding of older adult needs improved, as did their interest in geriatrics. Results illustrate that virtual geriatric interprofessional (IP) programs may be viable alternatives to in-person opportunities.
