Dynamics of interdisciplinarity: a microlevel analysis of communication and facilitation in a group model‐building workshop

AbstractParticipatory system dynamics is assumed to generate inter‐ and transdisciplinary understanding and whole‐system perspectives via scripted workshop structure, facilitation, and the use of visual boundary objects. However, there is little research into how exactly workshop activities and facilitators affect communication dynamics during a workshop and create an interdisciplinary perspective. Thus, we offer an innovative dynamic understanding via a rare microlevel analysis of facilitation and dynamics of communication and interdisciplinarity in a group model‐building workshop. We investigate how the conversation focus unfolds over time and examine in depth disciplinary transitions as well as the facilitator's role. We also analyse participants' perceptions of interdisciplinarity from the workshop and provide a research framework for workshop microlevel analysis. Based on the workshop's heritage science setting, we discuss the recursive nature of generating joint meaning and the use of participatory system dynamics for managing interdisciplinarity in a research project and make recommendations. © 2023 The Authors. “In the Dark, All the Shadows Disappear”: Remodelling the Poetics of Gripping Horror in Stephen King’s The Institute

Abstract Transformations in the perception of horror by modern readers have provoked an increased tolerance for cruelty and death. This increase challenges authors to use special means of emotional arousal in order to appeal to contemporary audiences. One of Stephen King’s most recent books, The Institute (2019), is replete with such special means. The novel deals with unspeakable terror and centres on a group of psychic kids kidnapped and placed in brutal conditions to serve the dark purposes of powerful men. This article explores King’s ways of expressing horror by affecting universal human experiences, emotions, and feelings. It applies an interdisciplinary perspective based on psychological and hermeneutic approaches to argue that in the non-otherworldly and non-monster horror The Institute, King involves a combination of vocabulary inventions, syntactic transformations, letter emphases, and refined literary devices to create a terrifying atmosphere. These means are explicated in the article to argue that the violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms is, in many ways, more shocking and frightening than traditional bloody images. They help King remodel a dark realm of gripping horror, where fear arises primarily out of a sense of the distorted world order, and enable the writer to critique social institutions for their approval of horrendous harm.

Media paratexts and translation: interdisciplinary perspectives

ABSTRACT Drawing on examples from recent promotional campaigns created by streaming platform Netflix, this article reflects on translation and media paratexts from an interdisciplinary perspective. It includes discussion of marketing approaches, political and commercial constraints and priorities, theoretical frameworks, and future directions in media paratext research. It also introduces and contextualizes the contributions included in the special issue Media Paratexts and Translation.

The pathogenicity of violence and mental disequilibrium in E. E. Sule’s Sterile Sky

Sterile Sky by E. E. Sule is a partaker in the creative reflections on the phenomenon of violence, which has attracted scant attention in Nigerian literary scholarship. Relying on insights from orthodox medicine, specifically in its conception of violence, this article brings an interdisciplinary perspective to interrogate the literary representation of violence in the novel in terms of its relation to mental health challenges. Against the backdrop of the common belief that violence is associated with some mental health challenges, I demonstrate the paradox of violence as not only a symptom or consequence of mental instability or pathology, but also its cause. I also show how physical violence to persons or group of persons inflicts psychological violence on others. I go further to show how such psychological violence in turn leads to mental health challenges; and, finally but briefly, how some mental health challenges originally incited by violence beget new violence.

'Introduction'

The aim and scope of the Journal of Australian, Canadian, and Aotearoa New Zealand Studies (JACANZS) is to publish articles in various disciplines (history, politics, literature, law, anthropology, and Indigenous studies) on one or more of the the following countries: Australia, Canada, and Aotearoa New Zealand, with a core focus on articles that are comparative in their geographic remit, for example Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, or Australia and Canada. The creation of the journal responds to a lack of journals that collectively publish across the fields of Australian, Canadian, and Aotearoa New Zealand Studies from multi and interdisciplinary perspectives. It also followed the creation of the Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand Studies Network (ACNZSN) to reflect the work and membership of the network.

A total of 670 core articles on English phonological acquisition collected in CSSCI journals since 1998 were selected as data sources from January 1, 1998 to February 28, 2022. Using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 (64-bit) and Excel software, the mapping knowledge domain of hot topics in English phonological acquisition is drawn. It is found that the research on English phonological acquisition in China focuses on such topics as phonological awareness, foreign language teaching, interlanguage and assimilation, diphthong, and second language acquisition. In the future, the development of English phonological acquisition should focus on the current situation of insufficient English phonological training and lack of practical experience. At the same time, more attention will be paid to the integration of psychological problems and ideological and political teaching in the process of English phonological acquisition from an interdisciplinary perspective.

“The Arctic constant” in the linguistic consciousness of modern student youth

Introduction. Currently, there is an unprecedented increase in interest in the Arctic issues in various fields. The analysis of scientific literature testifies to the actualization of the study the phenomenon of a region taken as a fragment of the semiosphere and the formation of Arctic regionology. The research is devoted to representing the integral image of the Arctic from the interdisciplinary perspective, as well as in the context of value-semantic narratives in science and education. The purposes of this study are to present the key features of semiotics of the circumpolar region, and to reveal its cultural-symbolic codes anchored in the linguistic consciousness of student youth in contemporary Russia. Materials and methods. The main research method used was the free associative experiment involving students of Saint Petersburg Mining University. The study took place in several stages, starting in 2021. It was attended by 400 students of different faculties, mainly aged 18 to 20 years old. The following methods were also used: enquiry-conversation, systematic pedagogical observations, theoretical analysis of scientific literature. Results. The respondents gave 2875 responses to the stimulus “the Arctic” in the course of the associative experiment. The obtained associates were distributed into 5 thematic groups, which formed the “Arctic” conceptual field. The analysis of its the core zone, the near core zone and the periphery obtained shows prevalence of emotional-sensual reactions and estimations of the severe Arctic space, which is also perceived as a place richest in natural resources, with unique conditions for all kinds of research activity. Of all the components in the framework of the “Arctic” conceptual field, the ethno-cultural and geopolitical ones, together with any spiritual-ideological connotations related, are underrepresented. The research was also verified by the free interview of students in the form of a conversation. Conclusions. The data obtained confirmed the hypothesis that the heroic narrative formed in the Soviet era is no longer the dominant category in interpreting the conceptosphere of the Arctic and the North. However, the symbolic value of the Arctic and the polar feat may become one of priority national ideas in modern Russia. The analysis of the ideological orientations of students regarding the “Arctic” conceptual field is the most important pedagogical and educational problem. It is necessary to revive educational traditions on the formation of “the Arctic consciousness” among the younger generation and develop a unified socio-humanitarian paradigm of knowledge about this unique region of the Earth.

What is a heat(wave)? An interdisciplinary perspective

Excessive summer heat is becoming people’s daily reality creating an urgency to understand heatwaves and their consequences better. This article suggests an interdisciplinary analytical framework of heat(waves) as multiple objects. It brings together data and perspectives from social anthropology, sociology, climate science, epidemiology, and meteorology to map the gaps in knowledge about heat(waves) and their impacts on one of the most vulnerable groups: older adults. Based on research in Poland and Spain, we look at heat(waves) as simultaneously individual experiences, biophysical changes, and socio-political phenomena. Climatologists and meteorologists define heat(waves) as prolonged episodes of abnormally high temperatures. Epidemiologists perceive heat(waves) through raising morbidity and mortality rates. For policymakers, they are an emergency defined by duration and temperature thresholds. Older adults living in Warsaw and Madrid recognize a heat(wave) when they feel it in their bodies, when they cannot sleep, or when they need to change their daily routines. Such differently situated scientific definitions and embodied knowledge stem not only from varied epistemological perspectives but demonstrate that heat(waves) are ontologically different. By looking at convergences and divergences between these perspectives, we see that the length of heat(waves) varies and that older adults often experience longer periods of excessive heat than climate measurements or policy alerts indicate; that the impact of nighttime temperatures is more important than daily temperatures; and that there is a discrepancy between heat(waves) as anomalies and as increasingly common events. The article addresses an important gap between biophysical definitions of heatwaves and the experiences of the most vulnerable groups.

Amplifying Autogestión and Cultural Rhetorics of Resistance

Expanding conceptions of material cultural rhetorics in activism, I explore how amplifying autogestión by artist-activist collectives allows for an approach to allyship that contributes to changing material realities for those involved. Writing about artistic collectives that engage in autogestión amplifies projects calling out corrupt governing practices rooted in systems of oppression, while emphasizing and exercising the power of relying on each other. In this article, I reflect on how amplifying autogestión as cultural rhetoric in venues outside of the field expands the reach of cultural rhetorics and how bringing that work back to the writing classroom encourages interdisciplinary perspectives where students learn about their relationality and responsibility to Puerto Ricans and other colonized peoples within the United States.

Reconciling the Dual Worldviews of Ancient Wisdom and Modernity: Collaborative-Learning Implications for Future Discourse

Science, climate change and traditional (or local) knowledge have been at the forefront of many academic and non-academic debates attempting to find discernible or explainable commonalities that exist between opposing worldviews (traditional knowledge/indigenous science vs. Western or Eurocentric Science). Ancient wisdom and modernity have seen their share of controversies over the past decade or more and, in particular, attended by many authors and scientists to explore these two important perspectives. This paper attempts to situate traditional knowledge and modern science by exploring the duality of ancient wisdom and modernity, and, in doing so, creates a better understanding of the importance of these opposing worldviews and how science ancient wisdom and technology/modernism can be interpreted and understood. The paper further explores meaningful interdisciplinary perspectives on how to explain coincidental relationships, components of bridging traditional knowledge/local knowledge (TK/LK) and transforming the compartmentalized view of science within a more holistic understanding of traditional ways of knowing. Lastly, merging Western or Eurocentric Sciences with Traditional Science has important policy implications that justify social-legitimacy through collaborative learning (CL) and integrating system thinking and conflict management.

Religious Materiality and Virtual Sainthood: The Case of Shna Ndou (St. Anthony) Pilgrimage in Laç

The interdisciplinary perspective, between history and anthropology, of our contribution has as its subject the pilgrimage at Kisha e Shna Ndout (Sanctuary of St. Anthony of Padua) in Laç, northern Albania, which is one of the most visited religious sites in southeastern Europe. The church, built there and ministered by Franciscans, is now an impressive place of worship frequented throughout the year by thousands of pilgrims. On the 12th and 13th of June of each year, an official pilgrimage is held, which reaches its climax on the night of the 12th, when thousands of Albanians sleep in the shrine seeking blessings and healing. The pilgrimage practices show how materiality is a privileged means of reaching out to a religious place. This materiality is grounded in the multilayered built environment, which has been built and rebuilt and especially reconstructed after the collapse of the socialist regime—a process that reveals the pivotal function of secular infrastructures in the case of religious places. Virtuality is also an important aspect of the pilgrimage, and so materiality and virtuality form a single milieu that reshapes perceptions. Through participation in this pilgrimage, virtuality is sacralized and promotes sanctity.

Perception of online education during COVID-19: Online Photovoice (OPV) and ecological systems theory

ABSTRACT In this research, we used Community-Based Participatory Research, Ecological Systems Theory and active interdisciplinary social advocacy perspectives as part of our theoretical framework. Our sample consisted of 530 counselling undergraduate students with 481 consenting to participate by sharing the most important main facilitators and barriers for their online or distance education during COVID-19 pandemic. We used Online Photovoice methodology to get the students lived experiences focusing on their counselling major and Online Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to analyse shared experiences. Thirteen main facilitators emerged (e.g. The contribution of technology in distance education, 22%; computer, PC: Technological tools, 18%; internet, 14%) and 22 main barrier themes emerged (e.g. lack of technological tools and related knowledge, 16%; transition to distance education, 13%; emotions that are difficult to cope with, 12%). We also examined how participants attribute these facilitator and barrier themes to Ecological Systems Theory levels.

Educação Baseada em Competências e o Ensino da bioética num curso técnico de radiologia médica

Currently, an ethical perspective in professional training is essential. In health courses, a fundamental aspect is the learning of bioethics, a perspective that critically analyzes problem situations and socio-scientific themes through an interdisciplinary perspective. This field of knowledge is related to that proposed by a Common National Curricular Base (BNCC) in the area of Natural Sciences and its Technologies. The objective of this work, the result of a master's dissertation, was to apply a didactic sequence in the discipline “Ethics” of a technical course in the health area with the intention of facilitating the teaching of bioethics together with the development of the transversal competence of ethics, for through Competency-Based Education (EBC). The design consisted of a descriptive case study. The target audience was composed of 32 students, from the 1st module of a radiology technical course from a private institution located in the interior of the State of São Paulo. The results showed that the didactic sequence facilitated the teaching of bioethics and helped in the development of ethics as a transversal competence. Greater scientific literacy of students was perceived, a greater understanding of interdisciplinarity in this field of saber, the development of different behavioral skills and criticality and awareness in self-assessments. It is concluded that the teaching of bioethics through EBC can assist in ethical training and stimulate transversal resources in students.

Interlinking the silos: How to stimulate a new debate on more greenery in cities

To address the current and future impacts of climate change on urban inhabitants, the development and benefits of urban green areas have been widely investigated – including parks, open unsealed spaces, residential gardens and street trees. However, the provision of urban green spaces can be used by private developers or private-public partnerships as a marketing tool to increase real-estate values. This presents a disadvantage for low-income households who may not be able to stay where they are or move to buildings or areas less affected by heat waves. Another key challenge reflects land-use conflicts created by the need to plant more trees, as opposed to other urban needs such as more parking spaces. At present, in several cities, policy and planning instruments remain inadequate in providing enough green spaces such as urban trees to lessen the heat stress in cities (for example, in poorer neighborhoods and new urban transformations led by private developers). The need for the proliferation of urban trees faces multiple expectations and challenges from several perspectives: 1) the crucial need for adaptation to climate change; 2) the partial presence (or total absence) of trees in areas undergoing densification and future transformations to readdress within effective planning strategies and tools; and 3) the relevance of social consequences (counteracting socio-spatial inequalities and considering residents’ perspectives) linked to green gentrification and environmental justice. The aim of this paper is to investigate these three perspectives (which are currently independent, for the most part), in order to interlink the silos and address the need for an interdisciplinary perspective of trees in urban areas. We suggest that the integration of these three aspects would help us fill the current knowledge gaps and enable a comprehensive perspective on social and environmental policies required in the complex urban system, and therefore also encourage new research paths, as well as a higher social acceptance by homeowners and renters.

Identity development and practices in the Kano Kantin Kwari business community in Nigeria

Many studies on African communities tend to address how identities are embedded in peoples’ practices and cultures. However, little attention has been paid to the indigenous business communities in the African continent, particularly in Nigeria. The study is thus concerned with addressing this research gap from an interdisciplinary perspective using ‘community of practice’ (CoP) and ‘acts-of-identity’ frameworks to explore how participants develop, practise and negotiate identity in the Kano Kantin Kwari business community, Nigeria. Using qualitative ethnographic methods, five focus groups and 18 individual participants were selected through snowball sampling. The findings obtained offer social and pedagogical implications and reveal the significance of sociocultural, sociohistorical and sociopsychological backgrounds in projecting, focusing and diffusing identities. For the most part, macro influences and micro practices determined members’ negotiation of their identities. Despite the ethnographic fieldworker’s constraints, this study provides implications for similar under-represented and muffled communities as it reveals how identity – as an ongoing phenomenon – is socially constructed, developed and practised.

It is our contention that Aikido may have sufficient support for its use in complementary therapies in the field of clinical treatment. However, as far as we are aware, no extensive scientific studies highlighting the application of Aikido as a psychosomatic therapy in the field of psychological behavioural disorders has been carried out. Our aim here was to conduct a systematic review of scientific studies associated with the possible psychosomatic benefits of Aikido practice and to examine whether there is any theoretical basis for this psychosomatic health connection. In terms of methodology, a systematic review of published scientific literature on health and Aikido was conducted in adherence with PRISMA guidelines. Three aspects of the application of Aikido were identified, one corresponding to phases more susceptible to psycho-emotional instability such as during the period of adolescence; another aspect related to the treatment of overcoming trauma in subjects with post-traumatic stress disorder and the final aspect related to the improvements as a result of the practical intervention of mindfulness. It is evident from our review, that the treatment of Aikido as a discipline with psychotherapeutic potential requires further expert analysis from a cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective, which would involve establishing a suitable intervention model in order to attain a deeper understanding of the discipline of Aikido. Moreover, a mastery of the field of psychology and psychiatry is required to understand the internal cognitive processes of the subjects studied.
