Plasmonic couplings in Ag-Au heterodimers.

The plasmonic coupling between silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) under four polarization modes was examined: a longitudinal mode (L-mode), where the electric field of a linearly polarized incident light parallels the dimer axis, and three transverse modes (T-modes), where the electric field of the light is perpendicular to the dimer axis. The coupling was studied using the discrete dipole approximation followed by an in-house postprocessing code that determines the extinction (Qext), absorption (Qabs), and near-field (Qnf) spectra from the individual NPs as well as the whole system. In agreement with the literature results, the extinction/absorption spectra of the whole dimer have two peaks, one near the Ag localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) region and the other at the Au LSPR region, with the peak at Ag LSPR being reduced in all modes and the peak at Au LSPR being red-shifted and increased in the L-mode but not in the T-modes. It is further shown that the scattering at the Ag LSPR region is reduced and becomes less than the isolated Ag NPs, but the absorption at the Ag LSPR is increased and becomes greater than the isolated Ag NPs for the 50nm Ag-Au heterodimer. This suggests that the scattering from Ag NPs is being reabsorbed by the neighboring Au NPs due to the interband electronic transition in Au at that wavelength range. The Qext from the individual NP in the heterodimer shows the presence of the Fano profile on the Au NP but not on the Ag NP. This phenomenon was further investigated by using a dielectric particle (DP) placed near the Ag or Au NPs. The Fano profile appears in the absorbing DP spectra placed near either Ag or Au NPs. However, the Fano profile is masked upon further increases in the refractive index value of the DP particle. This explains the absence of a Fano profile on the Ag NPs in the Ag-Au heterodimer. The large near-field enhancement on both Ag and Au NPs at the Au plasmonic wavelength in the L-mode for large NPs was investigated through a DP-Au system. The large enhancement was shown to arise from a large imaginary component of the DP refractive index and a small real component. Through examination of both the near- and far-field properties of the individual NPs as well as the whole system and examinations of DP-Ag and DP-Au systems, our study provides a new understanding of the couplings between Ag and Au NPs.

Resonant Raman scattering of few layers CrBr3

We investigate the vibrational and magnetic properties of thin layers of chromium tribromide (CrBr3) with a thickness ranging from three to twenty layers (3–20 L) revealed by the Raman scattering (RS) technique. Systematic dependence of the RS process efficiency on the energy of the laser excitation is explored for four different excitation energies: 1.96 eV, 2.21 eV, 2.41 eV, and 3.06 eV. Our characterization demonstrates that for 12 L CrBr3, 3.06 eV excitation could be considered resonant with interband electronic transitions due to the enhanced intensity of the Raman-active scattering resonances and the qualitative change in the Raman spectra. Polarization-resolved RS measurements for 12 L CrBr3 and first-principles calculations allow us to identify five observable phonon modes characterized by distinct symmetries, classified as the Ag\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$_\ ext {g}$$\\end{document} and Eg\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$_\ ext {g}$$\\end{document} modes. The evolution of phonon modes with temperature for a 16 L CrBr3 encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride flakes demonstrates alterations of phonon energies and/or linewidths of resonances indicative of a transition between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic state at Curie temperature (TC≈50\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$T_\ ext {C} \\approx 50$$\\end{document} K). The exploration of the effects of thickness on the phonon energies demonstrated small variations pronounces exclusively for the thinnest layers in the vicinity of 3–5 L. We propose that this observation can be due to the strong localization in the real space of interband electronic excitations, limiting the effects of confinement for resonantly excited Raman modes to atomically thin layers.

UV-induced resonant excitations of electrons near the Brillouin zone boundary in solid high harmonic generation

Abstract We propose a novel mechanism to manipulate the electron dynamics at the boundary of the Brillouin zone (BZ) through resonant excitation induced by ultraviolet (UV) laser pulses in solid high harmonic generation (HHG). When adding weak UV pulses to a stronger mid-infrared (MIR) driving field, we show that UV pulses with specific wavelengths generate a resonant excitation zone around the Γ point in k − space, which facilitates the interband transition of electrons in the BZ boundary region. The scheme is not only significant for achieving higher harmonic yield, but also exhibits strong robustness at a relatively low MIR driving intensity due to the inherent manipulation of UV pulses for interband dynamics of BZ boundary electrons. The semiclassical four-step model is adopted to elucidate underlying physics.

Theory of resonantly enhanced photo-induced superconductivity

Optical driving of materials has emerged as a versatile tool to control their properties, with photo-induced superconductivity being among the most fascinating examples. In this work, we show that light or lattice vibrations coupled to an electronic interband transition naturally give rise to electron-electron attraction that may be enhanced when the underlying boson is driven into a non-thermal state. We find this phenomenon to be resonantly amplified when tuning the boson’s frequency close to the energy difference between the two electronic bands. This result offers a simple microscopic mechanism for photo-induced superconductivity and provides a recipe for designing new platforms in which light-induced superconductivity can be realized. We discuss two-dimensional heterostructures as a potential test ground for light-induced superconductivity concretely proposing a setup consisting of a graphene-hBN-SrTiO3 heterostructure, for which we estimate a superconducting Tc that may be achieved upon driving the system.

The conductivity effect of the top coating on optical properties of thin Cu(Ag)-layered structures

This study examines the optical properties of thin Cu (Ag)-layered structures covered with protective layers based on graphene, titanium (TiO2), or aluminium (Al2O3) oxides. The objective is to investigate the impact of these coatings on the optical behaviors of underlying metallic layers, specifically in the spectral range of excitation of surface plasmon resonances. Combining the methods of spectroreflectometry and spectro-ellipsometry was used to analyze the optical characteristics of the hybrid metal-oxide-graphene films. The study shows that graphene, due to its exceptional electrical conductivity and unique optoelectronic properties, significantly modifies the optical behavior of investigated structures. It includes notable changes in refractive and absorption indices, and optical conductivity indicating potential for enhancing light-matter interactions in plasmonic-graphene layered structures with the aim to apply as biosensor. It is important that addition of TiO2 and Al2O3 layers has also strong effects on the optical properties, which are relevant to their respective applications in the fields of optoelectronics and microelectronics. Employing the effective medium approximation and the Tauc–Lorentz model promotes deeper understanding the interplay between interband and intraband electronic transitions at the nanoscale level. It was revealed that the layer thickness of constituted materials and their individual dielectric functions together with addition of a graphene monolayer commit the significance for altering the optical properties of hybrid layered structures. The obtained results are important for the fields of plasmonics and nanotechnology, providing insights for designing sensors and devices with improved optical characteristics.

Spin dynamics of room temperature van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets and their usage in microwave devices

Quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials exhibiting room-temperature (RT) long-range ferromagnetic nature have emerged as a significant research field to explore fundamental condensed matter physics due to their intriguing physical properties. These vdW materials enable a futuristic platform for implementing novel spintronics devices. Here, we examined the spin dynamics of polycrystalline Fe5GeTe2 and Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2 vdW materials using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) study reveals that both materials have a soft ferromagnetic character at room temperature. From room temperature FMR measurements, the effective magnetization of Fe5GeTe2 and Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2 derived ∼0.54 ± 0.056 and 0.50 ± 0.017 kOe, respectively. These results are consistent with reported VSM data. Fe5GeTe2 and Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2 exhibit broad FMR linewidths of 0.697 ± 0.036 and 0.748 ± 0.056 kOe, respectively, which can be due to inhomogeneous line broadening. Besides its intrinsic contribution to linewidth, it is also affected by extrinsic Gilbert damping (αext). The value of αext is influenced by conflicting intra-band and inter-band electronic transitions, according to Modified Kambersky's theory. Furthermore, the effective Gilbert damping constant (α) obtained is 0.0513 ± 0.0046 for Fe5GeTe2 and 0.0526 ± 0.0031 for Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2 at RT. Additionally, we developed microwave signal processing devices using these materials and evaluated their functionality both as a microwave band-reject filter and an adjustable phase shifter. The stop-band response was studied across the 5 to 25 GHz frequency range under an applied magnetic field as high as 7 kOe. For these flip-chip-based devices, attenuation is −5 dB/cm for the Fe5GeTe2-based filter and −3.2 dB/cm on sample Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2 at 6.95 and 5.37 kOe, respectively. The same micro-strip filter was used as a tunable phase shifter in the off-resonance region. The optimal differential phase shift studied for Fe5GeTe2 and Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2-based phase shifters in the high-frequency region (22 GHz for Fe5GeTe2 and 18 GHz for Fe4.8Co0.2GeTe2) is 23°/cm and 14°/cm, respectively, at high magnetic fields. These versatile devices find integration across a wide spectrum of applications, such as phased-array antennas, radar systems, and wireless communication systems, offering their benefits to diverse fields.

Phonon-assisted carrier transport and indirect optical absorption of cubic boron nitride from first-principles

Inquiring the isotopically engineered carrier transport in polar materials remains an open question. Herein, the phonon-limited drift carrier mobility of single-crystal cubic boron nitride is presented using first-principles calculations. Natural c-BN has the predicted electron mobility of 1230 and 760 cm2/V s by solving the iterative Boltzmann transport equation and self-energy relaxation time approximation, respectively. The hole mobility under the Boltzmann transport equation and self-energy relaxation time approximation is 193 and 105 cm2/Vs, respectively. Subsequently, the electron and hole mobilities at the stable isotope levels of boron and nitride are predicted, and nitride isotopes are found to be more effective than boron for carrier mobility. Those carrier mobilities further decrease with increasing temperature due to the strengthened electron–phonon interactions. Moreover, the phonon-assisted indirect optical absorption of c-BN is investigated by considering the contribution of phonons to the indirect electronic inter-band transitions. The predicted imaginary part of the dielectric function is in better agreement with previous experiments. This work aims to understand the role of phonons in determining the carrier mobility and indirect optical absorption of c-BN.

Large second-order susceptibility from a quantized indium tin oxide monolayer.

Due to their high optical transparency and electrical conductivity, indium tin oxide thin films are a promising material for photonic circuit design and applications. However, their weak optical nonlinearity has been a substantial barrier to nonlinear signal processing applications. In this study, we show that an atomically thin (~1.5 nm) indium tin oxide film in the form of an air/indium tin oxide/SiO2 quantum well exhibits a second-order susceptibility χ2 of ~1,800 pm V-1. First-principles calculations and quantum electrostatic modelling point to an electronic interband transition resonance in the asymmetric potential energy of the quantum well as the reason for this large χ2 value. As the χ2 value is more than 20 times higher than that of the traditional nonlinear LiNbO3 crystal, our indium tin oxide quantum well design can be an important step towards nonlinear photonic circuit applications.

Temperature dependence of MXenes plasmons induced hot carrier generation and transport

Unlike conventional optoelectronic devices, plasmon-driven optoelectronic devices can efficiently realize energy conversion and regulate the energy distribution of hot carriers through high-energy, non-equilibrium “hot” electron-hole pairs (hot carriers) generated by surface plasmon non-radiative decay, thereby presenting new opportunities for realizing hot carrier optoelectronic devices. As the basis for the practical application of plasmon optoelectronic devices, searching for plasmon metal materials with exceptional performance has always been an important topic in the field of hot carrier optoelectronic devices. Currently, MXenes can be synthesized on a large scale and has excellent photoelectric properties, so it can be used to build a variety of hot carrier photodetectors with unique structures and functions. Unlike the fixed surface ends of two-dimensional materials such as graphene, MoS<sub>2</sub> and borophene, MXenes has an abundance of surface functional groups. However, the increase of ambient temperature will accelerate the oxidation modification of surface functional groups, thus affecting the life and performance stability of optoelectronic devices. In view of the inherent limitations of experimental research on dynamic characteristics of hot carriers at continuous temperatures, we study the temperature effects on the electronic state distributions and scattering effects by using the theory of multi-body perturbation and quantum mechanics. Particularly, we introduce temperature effect into interband electron transition and phonon-assisted electron transition process to obtain temperature dependent dielectric function. From the perspective of non-radiative decay of surface plasmon, we quantify the hot carrier generation efficiency, energy distribution and transport characteristics by first principles calculations, in order to systematically study the ambient temperature dependence of plasmon-induced hot carriers in MXenes. The results show that the interband transition and the phonon-assisted electron transition in MXenes together efficiently produce high-energy hot hole-dominated carriers with a long lifetime and transport distance, which is comparable to borophene. The increase of ambient temperature significantly improves the hot carrier generation efficiency in the infrared range. Meanwhile, the physical mechanism of hot carrier generation in visible light is almost unaffected by the increase of ambient temperature, and the generated hot holes show excellent ambient temperature stability. In addition, the lifetime and transport distance of hot carriers decrease with ambient temperature increasing, which is mainly due to the enhanced scattering of electrons and optical phonons. The research results will provide theoretical and data support for quantitatively evaluating the ambient temperature stability of MXenes plasmon optoelectronic devices in practical environment.

Tuning electrical and optical properties of InAs/GaAs1−x Sb x quantum dots

Understanding the electrical and optical properties of InAs/GaAs(Sb) quantum dots (QDs) is essential for designing and improving the performance of related semiconductor QD devices. In this paper, the effects of In segregation, QD size, capping layer thickness and Sb composition on the electrical and optical properties of type I and type II InAs/GaAs1−x Sb x () QDs are systematically investigated and general regularities are summarized. The comparisons of electron distribution probabilities, interband and intraband transition energies and absorption coefficients show that In segregation and QD size have a strong influence on the electron energy level positions of InAs QDs and that the trade-offs between absorption peak energy, absorption intensity and radiative lifetime of InAs/GaAs1−x Sb x QDs can be optimized by adjusting the thickness and Sb composition of the GaAs1−x Sb x capping layer. The results obtained are promising for the applications in the pre-design and performance feedback of the QD devices such as QD lasers, QD infrared detectors and intermediate band solar cells.

Growth of high quality CuO thin film and investigation of its abnormal luminescence behavior

Given the widespread application of Copper oxide in fields such as energy and environment, it is crucial to conduct in-depth research on its growth and basic physical properties. In this investigation, Copper oxide films were fabricated using spin-coating method, and the impact of heat-treatment temperature on the structure and optical characteristics of the samples was revealed. The experimental results indicate that the use of a low-temperature homogeneous buffer layer can improve the densification of CuO thin films. Polishing up the quality of metal-oxide films through buffer layers is a commonly used method. Raman spectra show that all samples have a monoclinic structure, and their crystalline quality gradually improves with the increase of annealing temperature. The photoluminescence spectra show that all samples exhibit similar emission spectral profiles, including three emission bands with central wavelengths at 404, 478, and 569 nm, respectively. Based on the results of EDX, XPS, and other researchers’ reports, we suggest that the violet emission located at 404 nm comes from the interband transition of electrons; The blue emission with a wavelength of 478 nm is ascribed to the transition of electrons from the conduction band (CB) to the copper vacancy level; The yellow-green emission located at 569 nm maybe originates from electronic transitions associated with surface oxygen vacancy defects.

Influence of chalcogenides on the optoelectrical properties of semiconductor ternary alloys Zn₀.₉₅Cd₀.₀₅X (X=S, Se and Te): A DFT study

In this article comprehensive study of the thermoelectric and optical properties of the Zn₀.₉₅Cd₀.₀₅X (X = S, Se and Te) by using first principle DFT calculation incorporating the Wien2k code, has been considered. Firstly, we determined the optimized structural parameters, comprising of the atomic coordinates. All the properties like the energy band structure, densities of electronic states and energy dependence of the optical functions were figured out. We found the decrease in their band gaps (3.5 eV, 3.0 eV and 1.9 eV respectively) as we replace S by Se and Te, respectively. We found that they are having direct band gap having transition along Γ- Γ symmetry point. The electronic interband transitions accountable in the optical spectra were specified. In parallel the standard Boltzmann transport theory were used to calculate the thermoelectric parameters, including Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivities and figure of merit. In response we found that the investigated compounds are potential candidates for thermoelectric applications.

A Mechanism Underpinning the Bioenergetic Metabolism-Regulating Function of Gold Nanocatalysts.

Bioenergetic deficits are known to be significant contributors to neurodegenerative diseases. Nevertheless, identifying safe and effective means to address intracellular bioenergetic deficits remains a significant challenge. This work provides mechanistic insights into the energy metabolism-regulating function of colloidal Au nanocrystals, referred to as CNM-Au8, that are synthesized electrochemically in the absence of surface-capping organic ligands. When neurons are subjected to excitotoxic stressors or toxic peptides, treatment of neurons with CNM-Au8 results in dose-dependent neuronal survival and neurite network preservation across multiple neuronal subtypes. CNM-Au8 efficiently catalyzes the conversion of an energetic cofactor, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide hydride (NADH), into its oxidized counterpart (NAD+ ), which promotes bioenergy production by regulating the intracellular level of adenosine triphosphate. Detailed kinetic measurements reveal that CNM-Au8-catalyzed NADH oxidation obeys Michaelis-Menten kinetics and exhibits pH-dependent kinetic profiles. Photoexcited charge carriers and photothermal effect, which result from optical excitations and decay of the plasmonic electron oscillations or the interband electronic transitions in CNM-Au8, are further harnessed as unique leverages to modulate reaction kinetics. As exemplified by this work, Au nanocrystals with deliberately tailored structures and surfactant-free clean surfaces hold great promise for developing next-generation therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative diseases.

Nonlocal Hydrodynamic Model with Viscosive Damping and Generalized Drude–Lorentz Term

The response of plasmonic metal particles to an electromagnetic wave produces significant features at the nanoscale level. Different properties of the internal composition of a metal, such as its ionic background and the free electron gas, begin to manifest more prominently. As the dimensions of the nanostructures decrease, the classical local theory gradually becomes inadequate. Therefore, Maxwell’s equations need to be supplemented with a relationship determining the dynamics of current density which is the essence of nonlocal plasmonic models. In this field of physics, the standard (linearized) hydrodynamic model (HDM) has been widely adopted with great success, serving as the basis for a variety of simulation methods. However, ongoing efforts are also being made to expand and refine it. Recently, the GNOR (general nonlocal optical response) modification of the HDM has been used, with the intention of incorporating the influence of electron gas diffusion. Clearly, from the classical description of fluid dynamics, a close relationship between viscosive damping and diffusion arises. This offers a relevant motivation for introducing the GNOR modification in an alternative manner. The standard HDM and its existing GNOR modification also do not include the influence of interband electron transitions in the conduction band and other phenomena that are part of many refining modifications of the Drude–Lorentz and other models of metal permittivity. In this article, we present a modified version of GNOR-HDM that incorporates the viscosive damping of the electron gas and a generalized Drude–Lorentz term. In the selected simulations, we also introduce Landau damping, which corrects the magnitude of the standard damping constant of the electron gas based on the size of the nanoparticle. We have chosen a spherical particle as a suitable object for testing and comparing HD models and their modifications because it allows the calculation of precise analytical solutions for the interactions and, simultaneously, it is a relatively easily fabricated nanostructure in practice. Our contribution also includes our own analytical method for solving the HDM interaction of a plane wave with a spherical particle. This method forms the core of calculations of the characteristic quantities, such as the extinction cross-sections and the corresponding components of electric fields and current densities.

Gadolinium oxide single crystals: Optical properties and radiation resistance

Large-size high optical quality Gd2O3 single crystals were grown from solution at T = 1145 °C by Czochralski method. XRD analysis showed that the crystal structure is characterized by a single cubic phase (С-phase). Absorption spectra and luminescence properties of Gd2O3 doped with impurity Tb3+ ion were studied. The absorption spectrum is determined by electronic transitions in Gd3+ ion (spectral region of 245–315 nm) and interband electron transitions below 240 nm. Intraconfigurational radiative f-f transitions from 5D4 level in Tb3+ ion are clearly manifested upon both UV- and X-ray excitation. At the same time, 6PJ → 8S7/2 radiative transitions in Gd3+ ions are completely absent. This fact indicates high efficiency of nonradiative energy transfer from Gd3+ to Tb3+ ions. Thermo-luminescent spectroscopy shows the absence of charge carrier trapping centers, which proves the perfection of its crystal structure. The crystal under study shows high radiation resistance to high-energy (E = 10 MeV, D = 105 kGy) electron beam. However, the effects of irradiation appear only in the photoluminescence excitation spectra and thermally stimulated luminescence.

The effects of spin–orbit coupling on optical properties of electronic Lieb lattice in the presence of magnetic field

In this paper, the optical conductivity of a two-dimensional Lieb lattice that is a line-centered square lattice is investigated in the presence of magnetic field and spin–orbit coupling. Specially, we address the frequency dependence of optical conductivity due to spin–orbit interaction. Using Green’s function approach, the behavior of optical conductivity has been obtained in the context of Kane–Mele model Hamiltonian. In the presence of magnetic field at low spin–orbit coupling strength, optical conductivity includes only Drude weight at zero frequency limit while interband transitions of electrons have no contribution to optical conductivity for each gap parameter below normalized value 0.6. However the increase of spin–orbit coupling strength causes to appear finite frequency peak in optical conductivity. Moreover our results show that optical conductivity increases with temperature for each value of spin–orbit coupling and magnetic field. Also we have studied the effects of magnetic field, electron doping and spin–orbit coupling on temperature dependence of optical conductivity of Lieb monolayer.

Interband Electron Transitions Energy in Multiple HgCdTe Quantum Wells at Room Temperature

The studies of the interband electron transition energy in multiple Hg1-xCdxTe/Hg1-yCdyTe quantum wells (MQWs) at room temperature were carried out. The MQWs were grown on the (013) GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy, with the layer composition and thickness being measured by the in-situ ellipsometric parameters measurement at the nanometer level. The Hg1-xCdxTe barrier composition and width were x = 0.69 and 30 nm, respectively. The Hg1-yCdyTe well composition was y = 0.06–0.10, and the width varied in the range of 2.7–13 nm. The experimental data of the interband electron transition energy were determined by the absorption spectral analysis. The calculation of the interband electron transition energy was carried out on the basis of the four-band Kane model. A good agreement between the experimental and calculated data was obtained. It was shown that MQWs may be used as a photosensitive material for creating infrared optoelectronic devices operating in different modes in the range of 3–10 μm at room temperature.

High-performance broadband photodetector based on plasmonic semiconductor-semiconductor p-n Cu1.8S/AZO interface

Plasmonic semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) provide intriguing optical properties which offer opportunities to extend the photo-response corresponding to photons with energies less than the semiconductor energy band gap. However, the performance of photodetectors based on individual plasmonic semiconductors is restricted due to very short-living photo-carriers, followed by carrier recombination (∼ 100 ps). Herein, a plasmonic semiconductor-semiconductor p-n interface (Cu1.8S/AZO NCs) was constructed representing 2-fold optical characteristics containing an inter-band electronic transition from the valence to conduction band in response to ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) excitation and plasmon-induced interfacial charge-transfer transition (PICTT) in response to near infrared (NIR) excitation. We demonstrated that AZO NCs, are appropriate candidates to generate chemical interface damping (CID) of plasmons in Cu1.8S NCs as an acceptor, which is required for PICTT pathway. The device displayed outstanding broadband UV–vis–NIR photoresponsivity (R) and response-time (Trise/Tfall) as high as R = 51.48 A/W, Trise/Tfall= 130/100 ms in 390 nm, R = 37.2 A/W, Trise/Tfall= 50/60 ms in 535 nm, R = 45.6 A/W, Trise/Tfall= 400/10 ms in 750 nm and R = 38.7 A/W and Trise/Tfall= 60/50 ms in 950 nm. This study demonstrates the promising potential of plasmonic semiconductor-semiconductor p-n hybrid systems as high-performance broadband photodetectors (PDs).

Launching Plasmons in a Two-Dimensional Material Traversed by a Fast Charged Particle.

We use a dielectric-response formalism to compute the induced charge density and the induced potential in a conductive two-dimensional (2D) material, traversed by a charged particle that moves on a perpendicular trajectory with constant velocity. By analyzing the electric force on the material via the Maxwell stress tensor, we showed that the polarization of the material can be decomposed into a conservative part related to the dynamic image force, and a dissipative part describing the energy and momentum transfer to the material, which is ultimately responsible for launching the plasma oscillation waves in the material. After showing that the launching dynamics is fully determined by the Loss function of the material, we used a conductivity model suitable for the terahertz to the midinfrared frequency range, which includes both the intraband and interband electron transitions in the material, to compute the real-space and time animations of the propagating plasma waves in the plane of the material. Finally, we used a stationary phase analysis to show that the plasmon wave crests go into an overdamped regime at large propagation distances, which are comparable to the distances where retardation effects are expected to emerge due to hybridization of the plasmon dispersion with the light line at long wavelengths.

Modeling of the interband transitions in the optical conductivity of doped two-dimensional materials in the terahertz to the infrared frequency range: the case studies of graphene and phosphorene

We use Kramers-Kronig analysis and ab initio calculations to develop a simple analytical method for including the effects of high-energy interband electron transitions in the density polarization function of doped graphene and doped phosphorene in the optical limit. The resulting formulas are suitable for applications in the terahertz to the mid-infrared range of frequencies, where the interband electron transitions are shown to give rise to static screening with a suitably chosen in-plane polarizability. In the case of phosphorene, each component of its static polarizability tensor can be computed from a sum-rule–like formula using the ab initio data for the real part of the corresponding component of the full optical interband conductivity tensor of that material.
