The vertical dimension of occlusion of complete dentures can be altered as a chairside procedure with the use of quick-curing acrylic resin, impression plaster, and a simple articulator. The use of the modified Boley gauge to measure the interarch distance enables the dentist to maintain accurate records in reference to changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion. After the patient is comfortable and all lesions of the oral tissues have been eliminated, the treatment is completed using the newly established vertical dimension of occlusion in new dentures.
