Establishing vertical maxillomandibular relations with posterior resin blocks

The vertical dimension of occlusion of complete dentures can be altered as a chairside procedure with the use of quick-curing acrylic resin, impression plaster, and a simple articulator. The use of the modified Boley gauge to measure the interarch distance enables the dentist to maintain accurate records in reference to changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion. After the patient is comfortable and all lesions of the oral tissues have been eliminated, the treatment is completed using the newly established vertical dimension of occlusion in new dentures.

The influence of the lips on mandibular rest position in edentulous patients

The rest position of the mandible with the mouth closed is governed chiefly by the lips. The elevator and depressor muscles, together with the tongue, maintain the position. Great importance should be attached to building the vestibular part of the occlusion rims so that they support the lips fully in order to give them harmonious position and movements prior to establishing the interarch distance. The rest position with the mouth open is probably governed wholly by the balanced tonus of elevator and depressor muscles.

Maintenance of the maxillomandibular relationship during occlusal rehabilitation

Two methods for maintaining the maxillomandibular relationship and interarch distance during occlusal rehabilitation have been described. The first method utilizes a maxillomandibular record denture when either unilateral or bilateral free-end edentulous ridges exist. This maxillomandibular record denture also serves as an aid in making the impression for a removable partial denture. The second method, a reference transfer table technique, is indicated when a relatively full complement of natural teeth is present.
