Using multimedia applications in teaching foreign language in terms of digitalization of education

The article deals with the didactic potential and the possibilities of using educational multimedia applications in the teaching process. In the study the importance of teachers' mastering the skills of using multimedia ap-plications, as well as the knowledge of their essence and capabilities, methodological and psychological-didactic foundations of their usage is stated. The authors consider the notion and types of educational multi-media applications, peculiarities of their usage in various pedagogical scenarios. The technical support for creating multimedia applications by teachers can be represented by the special authoring software tools, that is, programs that provide opportunities for independent building of effective interactive multimedia applica-tions for non-programmers, such as Macromedia Flash, iSpring Suit, Macromedia Director, Authorware Pro-fessional, etc. Multimedia applications can be recommended for usage as a communicative component of the educational environment. The effective performance of pedagogical scenarios of multimedia usage in the ed-ucational process contributes to the development of the learner’s independence and creativity, his active posi-tion as a subject of communicative interaction.

Blind Quality Assessment of Screen Content Images Via Macro-Micro Modeling of Tensor Domain Dictionary

Screen content images (SCIs) have been rapidly and widely applied in interactive multimedia applications. The problem of quality assessment for SCIs is an interesting research topic. Most of the existing methods use subjective and independent features in gray domain to predict the image quality, which cannot comprehensively characterize the image properties or lack unified mathematical explanation for SCIs. To address these problems, we propose a novel blind quality assessment method based on macro-micro modeling of tensor domain dictionary for SCIs in this article. In the proposed method, the tensor decomposition is explored first to avoid the loss of color information, and then a target dictionary is learned more effectively with the principal components. Furthermore, a macro-micro model is established to characterize the micro and macro features in the target dictionary space, which can provide a systematic mathematical interpretation for feature extraction. For the micro features, a log-normal pooling scheme is designed to enhance the effectiveness of feature aggregation by analyzing the particularity of the statistical distribution of sparse codes. Additionally, the statistical properties are mainly discussed and studied based on the Bernoulli law of large numbers, and then a reliable macro feature is generated to describe the relationship between the statistical distribution and quality degradation of SCIs. Experimental results determined by using three public SCI databases show that the proposed method can perform better than relevant existing methods in the prediction of the visual quality of SCIs, especially in terms of the generalization for distortion type and interpretability for feature generation.

Development of Interactive Learning Media for Software Engineering Subject Chapter Process Modeling in Higher Education

The software development process model or what is commonly called SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) is one of the Software Engineering (RPL) course materials in the Information Engineering Education (PTI) undergraduate study program where one of the competencies is understanding and knowing the concepts of device engineering software that can be applied in the software development life cycle which is summarized in the material for the SDLC software development process model. This material is the initial material that must be mastered by students to develop quality software. The use of interactive and interesting computer assisted learning media is expected to help the stages of the student learning process properly. This requires an interactive learning multimedia application. The purpose of this research is to develop interactive learning media as an alternative to independent learning tools to assist students in mastering the Software Development Process Model (SDLC) material for students and to find out the feasibility of multimedia application products for learning the Software Development Process Model (SDLC). The research and development methodology used in this research is Research and Development (R&D) with Borg and Gall's development steps which include: (1) Research and data collection; (2) Planning; (3) Development of product drafts; (4) Initial field trials; (5) Revision of trial results (6) Field trials; (7) Product improvement; (8) Field implementation test; (9) Completion of the final product; and (10) Dissemination of implementation. This methodology covers all matters relating to development to produce quality interactive learning media software. Based on the trials, the results obtained were 90.63 percent from media experts, 98.08 percent from material experts, 85.46 percent from initial field trials, 84.56 percent from field trials, and 86.27 percent from field implementation trials. The average value obtained is 89 percent based on the results of the overall data analysis. The conclusion of this research is that the development of multimedia applications for learning the Software Development Process Model (SDLC) is feasible as an independent learning medium. The product produced in this development research is a multimedia application for learning flash-based software development process (SDLC) models.

Approximate diffraction modeling for real-time sound propagation simulation.

Convincing simulation of diffraction around obstacles is critical in modeling sound propagation in virtual environments. Due to the computational complexity of large-scale wavefield simulations, ray-based models of diffraction are used in real-time interactive multimedia applications. Among popular diffraction models, the Biot-Tolstoy-Medwin (BTM) edge diffraction model is the most accurate, but it suffers from high computational complexity and hence is difficult to apply in real time. This paper introduces an alternative ray-based approach to approximating diffraction, called Volumetric Diffraction and Transmission (VDaT). VDaT is a volumetric diffraction model, meaning it performs spatial sampling of paths along which sound can traverse the scene around obstacles. VDaT uses the spatial sampling results to estimate the BTM edge-diffraction amplitude response and path length, with a much lower computational cost than computing BTM directly. On average, VDaT matches BTM results within 1-3 dB over a wide range of size scales and frequencies in basic cases, and VDaT can handle small objects and gaps better than comparable state-of-the-art real-time diffraction implementations. A GPU-parallelized implementation of VDaT is shown to be capable of simulating diffraction on thousands of direct and specular reflection path segments in small-to-medium-size scenes, within strict real-time constraints and without any precomputed scene information.

DEVELOPMENT OF LEARNING MEDIA BASED ON ARTICULATE STORYLINE

Utilization of technology in education will produce good quality learning, up to date, make critical thinking, have conceptual thinking and easy to access various learning resources. Together with technology, the teacher must realize a learning assisted learning media, so that students’ interest in learning increases. Articulate storyline application is an interactive multimedia application that can be used by teachers or students. Based on observations found that teachers use media objects for learning in class, especially in force material, then based on the results of interviews with teachers, teachers more often use learning media types of objects, visuals and silently projected. The purpose of this study is to validate the articulate storyline as a learning medium on force material. The steps of this research development include initial research and information gathering, planning, developing initial product formats, initial trials and product revisions. Data collected through observation, interviews and questionnaires. The results of the validation of the material experts stated that media is valid with an average value of 79.65%. Furthermore, the results of the validation of the media experts stated that media is valid with an average value of 86.16%. In tested valid media products with an average of 81.93%. From the results of these data the researchers concluded that the articulate storyline-based media are valid, and suitable for use as learning media.

An enhanced dynamic transmission opportunity scheme to support varying traffic load over wireless campus networks.

Transmission opportunity (TXOP) is a key factor to enable efficient channel bandwidth utilization over wireless campus networks (WCN) for interactive multimedia (IMM) applications. It facilitates in resource allocation for the similar categories of multiple packets transmission until the allocated time is expired. The static TXOP limits are defined for various categories of IMM traffics in the IEEE802.11e standard. Due to the variation of traffic load in WCN, the static TXOP limits are not sufficient enough to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) for IMM traffic flows. In order to address this issue, several existing works allocate the TXOP limits dynamically to ensure QoS for IMM traffics based on the current associated queue size and pre-setting threshold values. However, existing works do not take into account all the medium access control (MAC) overheads while estimating the current queue size which in turn is required for dynamic TXOP limits allocation. Hence, not considering MAC overhead appropriately results in inaccurate queue size estimation, thereby leading to inappropriate allocation of dynamic TXOP limits. In this article, an enhanced dynamic TXOP (EDTXOP) scheme is proposed that takes into account all the MAC overheads while estimating current queue size, thereby allocating appropriate dynamic TXOP limits within the pre-setting threshold values. In addition, the article presents an analytical estimation of the EDTXOP scheme to compute the dynamic TXOP limits for the current high priority traffic queues. Simulation results were carried out by varying traffic load in terms of packet size and packet arrival rate. The results show that the proposed EDTXOP scheme achieves the overall performance gains in the range of 4.41%—8.16%, 8.72%—11.15%, 14.43%—32% and 26.21%—50.85% for throughput, PDR, average ETE delay and average jitter, respectively when compared to the existing work. Hence, offering a better TXOP limit allocation solution than the rest.

Providing adjustable and dynamic spatial layouts for multimedia applications with STyLe

Interactive multimedia applications may be presented on multiple devices with different screen sizes. Therefore, application layouts should be adapted during runtime. Besides adapting layouts to different devices, the number of visual multimedia objects may vary, thus it is desirable to provide an automatic application layout adjustment to ease the authoring effort and provide good user quality of experience. In this article, the term adjustable layout is used to refer to an application spatial layout that adjusts itself to the number of media objects to be presented. The term dynamic layout is used to refer to an application spatial layout that can change at runtime in reaction to presentation events. Multimedia declarative authoring languages, such as NCL and SMIL, provide simple layout construction using nested rectangular regions to design the application layout. However, these languages do not provide native facilities for authors to develop adjustable and dynamic layouts. This article proposes STyLe, a constraint-based template language for providing adjustable and dynamic spatial layouts for multimedia documents. It also presents an architecture that is capable of interpreting STyLe when used together with NCL to provide dynamic layouts for interactive digital TV applications. The results show that STyLe has more expressiveness and abstraction when compared to NCL and that the language is simple and effective for building adjustable and dynamic layouts.

Pengembangan Multimedia Interaktif Pembelajaran Membaca Teks Berhuruf Jawa untuk Siswa Kelas VII SMP di Kecamatan Ungaran Timur

Grade VII junior high in Ungaran Timur was bored with learning to read the text in a monotonous Java. This is due to gurus only use the textbook so that interest students in reading the text in Java is less. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to develop an interactive multimedia learning reading text in Java. The methods used in this research, namely research and development (R and D). The results of this research in the form of a prototype interactive multimedia learning reading text in Java. The prototype drew up based on the needs of students and teachers. The shape of the prototype in the form of interactive multimedia applications. Lettered text impressions of Java through a picture story and accompanying audio as a confirmation. The tested product design validation by expert media, material, and teachers as users. After the repair of the product design in accordance with the suggestions of the validator, interactive multimedia learning reading text in Java considered worthy to be used by students of Class VII junior high in Ungaran Timur.

Design of Digital Interaction for Complex Museum Collections

Interactive multimedia applications in museums generally aim at integrating into the exhibition complementary information delivered through engaging narratives. This article discusses a possible approach for effectively designing an interactive app for museum collections whose physical pieces are mutually related by multiple and articulated logical interconnections referring to elements of immaterial cultural heritage that would not be easy to bring to the public with traditional means. As proof of this concept, a specific case related to ancient Egyptian civilization has been developed. A collection of Egyptian artifacts such as mummies, coffins, and amulets, associated with symbols, divinities, and magic spells through the structured funerary ritual typical of that civilization, has been explained through a virtual application based on the concepts discussed in the methodological section.

Flipping e-Learning for Teaching Medical Terminology: A Study of Learners’ Online Experiences and Perceptions

Since e-Learning has become popular in recent years, research studies have been conducted about which instructional methods are the most effective in online learning environments. The purpose of this study is to apply the flipped classroom model to a Medical Terminology Course that was provided fully online as part of a Medical Documentation and Secretarial associate degree program in a vocational college, and to analyze learners’ experiences associated with this application. Based on this method, as asynchronous activities, learners were required to study interactive multimedia content and applications. For synchronous activities, mainly learner-centered approaches, collaborative learning, problem solving and discussion, led the learning process. In the context of this study, learners’ usage of the system, submissions to the study process questionnaire, and academic achievement were collected as quantitative data; whereas, learners’ opinions towards the flipped classroom model were obtained as qualitative data. Hence, the study was designed as a mixed methods research. According to the results, it was found that learners’ academic achievement significantly related to their perceptions of deep learning and their time spent on learning activities. Moreover, learners indicated problematic aspects to the flipped classroom as time expectancies, insufficiency of instructional materials, and lack of advice received from the instructor.

The Development of Furniture Assembly Instruction Based on Augmented-Reality

This research utilized Augmented Reality (AR) technology along with interactive multimedia applications to improve visual guidance and assist nonexpert users in assembling furniture. Rather than paperbased or video instructions, AR enhanced learning and manipulative-interactive approach. This research used the Waterfall model for development. It was divided into a couple of stages. It consisted of specifying the problem and requirements, designing the system, implementing and integrating it, and testing the system. Identifying problems and requirements was conducted through an online questionnaire and related works study. The graphics tool used was 3D Studio Max. Unity3d was used to develop the system with the software library from Qualcomm’s Vuforia for the AR implementation. The results show the mobile application called ARsembly. It serves as the early stage of concept model as it only assists the simple assembly. Through system testing performed by both researchers and end-users, ARsembly is proven to be useful and helpful in learning and performing furniture assembly.

RANCANG BANGUN APLIKASI MULTIMEDIA INTERAKTIF MOBILE LEARNING MATA KULIAH METODE PENELITIAN FPP UNIVERSITAS NEGERI PADANG

Learning 4.0 refers to 9 IT-based trends and learning. Changes in education gave birth to innovations in the field of education with the aim of improving the quality of education. Information technology as an innovation becomes an educational need. Technology support in the field of education, educators are greatly helped in efforts to improve the quality of learning. The characteristics of mobile devices that have a high degree of flexibility and portability enable students to access material, direction and information related to learning where and at any time. One of them is the use of mobile learning applications. Interactive multimedia applications can be developed into mobile learning applications. The purpose of this study is to produce an application as a learning tool for students of research methods on Android-based smartphones that have material content that is tailored to the SOP of the State University of Padang. This application was developed through the Prototyping development approach with an Android-based Java programming language using the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of Android Studio. The making of this research resulted in the application of research methods courses as a means of learning for students who had syllabus features, lesson plans, material from units I to X and videos adapted to the syllabus. With the results of the application of learning this research method, it is expected that this application can contribute and provide convenience in the learning process of FPP UNP student research methods.

Novelty Luther-Sutopo method for game development

This research proposed a new Luther-Sutopo method to create multimedia product. The old Luther-Sutopo method was successfully used to create a multimedia product like a movie, video or interactive multimedia application and game. But there was missing maintenance step as one of important step to successfully develop a game. On the other side, Luther-Sutopo method only suitable for short term game development without considering the sustainability of multimedia development. In this paper, we aimed to create a framework that modify basic Luther-Sutopo concept. The new framework has been tested to create Bedugul Forest game. The study found that the framework successfully applied to create the game and the development process more suitable for game development with limited resources.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: The depth of interactivity in the interaction with multimedia content: the development of user-friendly application

Interactivity is a commonly used term. Although interactivity is well described in terms of mechanics, the basic model lacks clarity and understanding. The interactivity is defined in the literature review and applies to a wide range of situations. The interactivity is a basic concept that easily adapts to any situation precisely because it still seems vague and is used ambiguously when the features of technology are taken into account. Here, the conceptual term “dialogue” is suggested as a basis for considering interactivity. The key consequences of this are the provision of information for logical processing, inconsistent access to information and an approach based on the unfolding dialogue between the user and the application. Natural language processing does not yet have a sufficient degree of control and predictability. Despite this, artificial intelligence is a promising breakthrough in information technology. Hence, artificial intelligence can be embedded in interactivity shortly. This prompts the researches in more detail to study the components that make the “dialogue” work and try to apply them in interactive multimedia applications. This study proposes a new approach to the formation of a multimedia application with a user-friendly depth of interactivity. This approach includes interactivity and allows selecting the degree of interactivity by tracking the emotional response of the user and choosing the control points of interest in the media content.

Aceh Serune Kale and Rapai Ethnic Musical Instrument Preservation Method Based on Two-Dimensional Multimedia Animation

Ethnic musical instruments are cultural heritage that must be preserved. This is done so that the existence of these musical instruments is not extinct and can continue to be known to future generations. Aceh is an area that also has ethnic musical instruments of various kinds such as Serune Kalee and Rapai. During this time, the preservation of musical instruments was carried out through the performance of cultural arts in the form of stage performances or art exhibitions with a predetermined and limited schedule. Therefore, to be able to preserve these musical instruments, it is necessary to introduce these musical instruments so that they are known by the public, especially for early childhood. The method is the use of two-dimensional animated multimedia content so that people can learn these musical instruments in video and audio. The purpose of this study was to design an identification model of the Serunee Kale and Rapai ethnic musical instruments with interactive media based on two-dimensional animated multimedia content. This study produced an interactive multimedia application for the introduction of Serune Kale and Rapai ethnic musical instruments developed using Actionscript programming found on Macomedia Flash. In addition, products were also produced that provided information about ethnic Acehnese musical instruments Serune Kalee and Rapai.

Radio over fiber system based on a hybrid link for next generation of optical fiber communication

<p>Radio over fiber technology will play an important role in solving problems facing wireless technology. Envisaging a global village, people could transmit and receive “anytime, anywhere, and anything”. In addition, the explosive growth in internet applications such as the World Wide Web, demonstrates the tremendous increase in bandwidth and low power that the coming world of multimedia interactive applications will require from future networks. ROF technology uses multicarrier modulation like orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which provides an opportunity of having an increased in bandwidth together with an affordable cost and this idea has recently become a suitable topic for many research works. On the other hand, SAC-OCDMA (Spectral Amplitude Coding Optical Code Division Multiple Access) technique is able to enhance the data rate of system and increase the number of user. In this paper we introduce a ROF link using a hybrid OFDM/SAC-OCDMA technique.</p>

Practical Privacy-Preserving Content-Based Retrieval in Cloud Image Repositories

Storage requirements for visual data have been increasing in recent years, following the emergence of many highly interactive multimedia services and applications for mobile devices in both personal and corporate scenarios. This has been a key driving factor for the adoption of cloud-based data outsourcing solutions. However, outsourcing data storage to the Cloud also leads to new security challenges that must be carefully addressed, especially regarding privacy. In this paper we propose a secure framework for outsourced privacy-preserving storage and retrieval in large shared image repositories. Our proposal is based on IES-CBIR, a novel Image Encryption Scheme that exhibits Content-Based Image Retrieval properties. The framework enables both encrypted storage and searching using Content-Based Image Retrieval queries while preserving privacy against honest-but-curious cloud administrators. We have built a prototype of the proposed framework, formally analyzed and proven its security properties, and experimentally evaluated its performance and retrieval precision. Our results show that IES-CBIR is provably secure, allows more efficient operations than existing proposals, both in terms of time and space complexity, and paves the way for new practical application scenarios.

Low-Complexity Scalable Extension of the High-Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC) Encoding System

The scalable extension of the high-efficiency video coding (SHVC) system adopts a hierarchical quadtree-based coding unit (CU) that is suitable for various texture and motion properties of videos. Currently, the test model of SHVC identifies the optimal CU size by performing an exhaustive quadtree depth-level search, which achieves a high compression efficiency at a heavy cost in terms of the computational complexity. However, many interactive multimedia applications, such as remote monitoring and video surveillance, which are sensitive to time delays, have insufficient computational power for coding high-definition (HD) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) videos. Therefore, it is important, yet challenging, to optimize the SHVC coding procedure and accelerate video coding. In this article, we propose a fast CU quadtree depth-level decision algorithm for inter-frames on enhancement layers that is based on an analysis of inter-layer, spatial, and temporal correlations. When motion/texture properties of coding regions can be identified early, a fast algorithm can be designed for adapting CU depth-level decision procedures to video contents and avoiding unnecessary computations during CU depth-level traversal. The proposed algorithm determines the motion activity level at the treeblock size of the hierarchical quadtree by utilizing motion vectors from its corresponding blocks at the base layer. Based on the motion activity level, neighboring encoded CUs that have larger correlations are preferentially selected to predict the optimal depth level of the current treeblock. Finally, two parameters, namely, the motion activity level and the predicted CU depth level, are used to identify a subset of candidate CU depth levels and adaptively optimize CU depth-level decision processes. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can run approximately three times faster than the most recent SHVC reference software, with a negligible loss of compression efficiency. The proposed scheme is efficient for all types of scalable video sequences under various coding conditions and outperforms state-of-the-art fast SHVC and HEVC algorithms. Our scheme is a suitable candidate for interactive HD/UHD video applications that are expected to operate in real-time and power-constrained scenarios.
