Exploring Interactive Learning Approaches and Technology Integration in the Kenyan Education System

Abstract This paper examines the dynamic intersection of interactive learning approaches and technology integration within contemporary education. As technology rapidly evolves, it fundamentally reshapes pedagogical practices by introducing innovative tools and strategies that redefine the teaching and learning landscape. We investigated the pivotal roles of Extended Reality (XR) technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), in crafting immersive educational experiences. Additionally, interactive learning methodologies, such as game-based learning and the Learning by Asking (LBA) system, are scrutinized for their potential to engage learners and foster their skill acquisition. Furthermore, the emergence of competency-based education (CBE) models is analyzed in response to evolving educational objectives, emphasizing the cultivation of practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to lifelong learning. Nevertheless, the successful integration of these advancements encounters formidable challenges, including institutional barriers and the imperative need for comprehensive teacher training. This review illuminates the transformative potential of technology in education and underscores educators’ pivotal role in equipping learners for an increasingly dynamic and uncertain future.

Development of a Web-Based Interactive Multimedia Problem-Based Learning Approach on Algorithms and Programming Material

This research and development aims to produce interactive multimedia based on problem-based learning (PBL) using the Web to improve student learning outcomes in algorithms and programming material that is feasible, practical, and effective. This type of development research uses the ADDIE model. This research was carried out at SMK Negeri 6 Mukomuko, the material on algorithms and programming in the informatics class X Phase E. The results of the research show: (1) Expert validation test on product material in the very feasible category, namely 88.14%. (2) The Instructional Design Expert validation test is in the very feasible category, namely 95.56%. (3) The Media Expert validation test is in the very feasible category, namely 91.46%. (4) Individual trials in the very good category, namely 87.55%. (5) The small group trial was in the very feasible category, namely 89.65%. And (6) field trials in the very feasible category, namely 89.15%. The practicality test was very practical, namely 96.67%, while the practicality test results for students were 95.59% in the very practical category. The results of the experiment using PBL-based interactive multimedia in the experimental class gave an average learning outcome of 84, while students who were taught without using PBL-based interactive multimedia got an average score of 60.9. Hypothesis testing uses an independent t-test with significant results. (2-tailed) of 0.00, where the result is <0.05, it is concluded that there is a significant difference between classes taught using PBL-based interactive multimedia and classes taught without using PBL-based interactive multimedia

Listening and Speaking Pedagogical Approaches towards the Development of Innovative Macro Skills among English Teachers in Binakayan National High School: A Narrative Study

A child becomes able to speak after getting enough exposure to the language through listening. This only proves that listening and speaking are the most important skills to be developed first among all skills. But, despite this truth of importance, for many years, these two skills do not receive any priority in language teaching and testing. Hence, this study aims to analyze the listening and speaking pedagogical approaches of Binakayan National High School English teachers, their impact to their profession as language teachers through their response to the challenges, and their contribution for the development of innovative macro skills. This research is a narrative study using a purposive sampling with pre-set criteria for the prospect respondents. Data gathering was done through interviews, self-made questionnaires which underwent content validation, and focus group discussion as research instruments. In data analysis, transcribing/inductive coding and thematic analysis were utilized in getting the emerging ideas of the study. The study ‘s findings and results state that Binakayan National High School English teachers apply listening and speaking pedagogical approaches in their instructional plan through task-based and interactive teaching and learning approaches, they respond to challenges of these approaches gracefully which lead them become more dedicated to their profession as language teachers, and enumerating the pedagogical approaches they apply in their English classroom, still they need more technical assistance on the development of strategies and techniques towards innovative macro skills.

UPAYA MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI ANAK-ANAK PUTUS SEKOLAH MELALUI SEKOLAH PAKET DI DESA KUTA

This community service activity aims to motivate out-of-school children to return to school through school packages. This research included out-of-school children aged 13-16 years in Kuta Village, especially in Warudoyong Village Rt 02 Megamendung District. Data collection was carried out through observation and interviews. The data was analyzed descriptively and qualitatively with the stages of data collection, data reduction, and conclusion. The results of this program reveal that children who have dropped out of school in Kuta Village have various reasons for taking package schools, including economic constraints, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental influences, and family support. The children decided to attend a package school organized by PKBM as an alternative to continuing their education. This package school is presented with an exciting and interactive learning approach, including digital technology and outdoor activities. There are three main factors revealed, namely: (1) economics, (2) environment, and (3) motivation play an essential role in the decision of out-of-school children to take package schools. Even though they face several challenges, such as feeling lazy in studying, these children feel motivated to continue their education to a higher level after completing package school. This program shows the importance of government, schools/universities, and families' collaborative efforts in supporting out-of-school children to get a better education and achieve their dreams.

The Ability of Students in the Hospitality Accommodation Program at Vocational High School to Write Paragraphs Wsing English Terms in the Food and Beverage Service Subject

Purpose of the study: This research aims to determine the ability of class XI students of Vocational High School 4 in Jambi City hotel accommodation skills program in writing paragraphs using English terms contained in the Food and Beverage Service subject.
 Methodology: The population in this study were class XI students of the Hospitality Accommodation Skills Program at Vocational High School 4 in Jambi City, a sample of 34 class X1 students in hotel accommodation 2 as respondents. The data collection technique uses the test method. The data obtained were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis formulas with mean, median, mode.
 Main Findings: The results showed that the majority of students demonstrated adequate abilities in expressing ideas and concepts related to food and beverage service in English. However, there are still some students who face difficulties in applying competence and appropriate grammar in this specific context. Therefore, there is a need for a more focused and interactive learning approach to improve students' writing skills in this subject.
 Novelty/Originality of this study: The research makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the challenges and potential in English language learning in the hospitality sector. It is hoped that the results of this research will not only provide a deeper understanding of students' abilities in using English, but also highlight effective learning strategies in improving students' language skills in contexts relevant to the hospitality industry.

The effect of interactive learning method on nursing students' learning of movement requirement: A randomized controlled study

BackgroundInteractive learning is one of the active learning methods used to develop students' knowledge and skills. ObjectivesThis study was conducted to determine the effect of the interactive learning method with questions prepared according to Bloom's taxonomy on nursing students' learning of the need for movement. DesignIt is a randomized controlled study conducted in May 2023. ParticipantsThis study was conducted with 134 first-year nursing students taking the Fundamentals of Nursing course. The students were randomly divided into control (n = 67) and experimental (n = 67). MethodThe data was collected by using a form delineating descriptive characteristics, a test assessing the necessity of movement knowledge, an analysis of a specific case study, and an assessment form for gathering student opinions on interactive learning. The queries within the data collection form were tailored to align with Bloom's taxonomy. Following the theoretical instruction, each student participated in the mobility needs knowledge test and case analysis (pre-test). The instructional session for the control group involved conventional lecture-style teaching supplemented with a question-and-answer format, while the experimental group received instruction through an interactive learning approach. One week subsequent to this, all students retook the mobility needs knowledge test and case analysis (post-test). Subsequently, feedback regarding the interactive learning method was solicited from the students. ResultsThe knowledge test revealed a statistically significant difference, with the control group exhibiting a higher median comprehension score in the post-test compared to the experimental group (p < 0.05). Regarding the case analysis, statistical analysis demonstrated that the experimental group surpassed the control group in median scores for comprehension, synthesis, and total scores, with a significant difference (p < 0.05). Additionally, most students expressed favorable opinions toward the interactive learning approach. ConclusionsIt is recommended that studies on interactive learning be repeated in different subjects in nursing education.ClinicalTrials.gov ID:NCT05868278

Motivation and Learning Conceptions That Matter When Considering Global Citizenship Education

35 undergraduate students enrolled in a Primary Education Program participated in an innovation activity consisting of creating an ideal school and promoting a global citizenship education. The students completed a survey in which they evaluated the lesson they received from their peers in terms of motivation and the type of activities carried out in terms of the learning conception promoted. We followed a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results observed a significant increase in only in meaning motivation. Athough no significant shifts in learning conceptions were found, there was a trend toward interactive and applicative learning approaches.

Teacher-Students’ Classroom Interaction in Teaching Grammar with Interactive Learning Approach

In this study, classroom interactions during an interactive grammar learning process are analyzed. It attempts to explore the teacher's interaction strategies in teaching grammar using an interactive learning approach. Based on observation analysis using the Flanders Interaction Analysis Category (FIAC) to an English teacher and four volunteers learning English grammar, this study revealed that the teacher's interaction strategies in teaching grammar using interactive learning approach include activities like asking question, giving encouragement or praise, lecturing, and giving directions. Based on this study, the interactive learning approach can encourage students to participate in sharing their ideas during the learning process.

Using interactive learning methods during practical exercises on fire training

This article examines the use of interactive learning methods during practical exercises on fire training. The author considered the effectiveness and practical advantages of using modern technologies and interactive approaches to improve the educational process in the law enforcement context. The article analyzes the results of research and provides examples of successful implementation of interactive training methods during fire training, which contributes to improving the skills and knowledge of future law enforcement officers.&#x0D; The article also discusses various tools and technologies that can be used for interactive fire training, such as virtual reality, range simulators, and skill monitoring systems. The importance of involving the military in active participation in the training process, as well as the interaction between instructors and law enforcement officers during training, is highlighted. Practical recommendations for the implementation of interactive training methods in the context of fire training to achieve a higher level of training and effectiveness of military operations are described.&#x0D; Interactive learning approaches such as simulations, games, virtual reality, practical exercises and competitions are analyzed, particularly their advantages in promoting firearms proficiency and knowledge. The study describes the interaction of participants during interactive classes, emphasizing the role of cooperation and interaction in the learning process. The impact of these methods on improving the understanding of the material and ensuring effective learning is also considered. The results of the study provide an important contribution to the understanding and use of interactive training methods in the field of fire training, emphasizing their importance for increasing the effectiveness and interest in training, as well as improving proficiency in this area.&#x0D; These interactive methods help increase the effectiveness of training and the practical application of fire training skills, ensuring better learning of the material and preparation for real situations.

A KMP-based interactive learning approach for robot trajectory adaptation with obstacle avoidance

Purpose Imitation learning is a powerful tool for planning the trajectory of robotic end-effectors in Cartesian space. Present methods can adapt the trajectory to the obstacle; however, the solutions may not always satisfy users, whereas it is hard for a nonexpert user to teach the robot to avoid obstacles in time as he/she wishes through demonstrations. This paper aims to address the above problem by proposing an approach that combines human supervision with the kernelized movement primitives (KMP) model. Design/methodology/approach This approach first extracts the reference database used to train KMP from demonstrations by using Gaussian mixture model and Gaussian mixture regression. Subsequently, KMP is used to modulate the trajectory of robotic end-effectors in real time based on feedback from its interaction with humans to avoid obstacles, which benefits from a novel reference database update strategy. The user can test different obstacle avoidance trajectories in the current task until a satisfactory solution is found. Findings Experiments performed with the KUKA cobot for obstacle avoidance show that this approach can adapt the trajectories of the robotic end-effector to the user’s wishes in real time, including trajectories that the robot has already passed and has not yet passed. Simulation comparisons also show that it exhibits better performance than KMP with the original reference database update strategy. Originality/value An interactive learning approach based on KMP is proposed and verified, which not only enables users to plan the trajectory of robotic end-effectors for obstacle avoidance more conveniently and efficiently but also provides an effective idea for accomplishing interactive learning tasks under constraints.

An Adaptation-Aware Interactive Learning Approach for Multiple Operational Condition-Based Degradation Modeling.

Although degradation modeling has been widely applied to use multiple sensor signals to monitor the degradation process and predict the remaining useful lifetime (RUL) of operating machinery units, three challenging issues remain. One challenge is that units in engineering cases usually work under multiple operational conditions, causing the distribution of sensor signals to vary over conditions. It remains unexplored to characterize time-varying conditions as a distribution shift problem. The second challenge is that sensor signal fusion and degradation status modeling are separated into two independent steps in most of the existing methods, which ignores the intrinsic correlation between the two parts. The last challenge is how to find an accurate health index (HI) of units using previous knowledge of degradation. To tackle these issues, this article proposes an adaptation-aware interactive learning (AAIL) approach for degradation modeling. First, a condition-invariant HI is developed to handle time-varying operation conditions. Second, an interactive framework based on the fusion and degradation model is constructed, which naturally integrates a supervised learner and an unsupervised learner. To estimate the model parameters of AAIL, we propose an interactive training algorithm that shares learned degradation and fusion information during the model training process. A case study that uses the degradation data set of aircraft engines demonstrates that the proposed AAIL outperforms related benchmark methods.

Strengthening the Attainment of Major Competencies of Program Outcomes through Open-ended Experiment using Statistical Designs

Abstract—Unit operations are very essential part of the chemical engineering and allied disciplines; and hence, basic knowledge about the principles and equipment used for various unit operations is mandatory for process engineer. Unit operations course introduces the foundation of process engineering concepts at the second year of undergraduate program of Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology. This course mainly focuses on the most essential unit operations utilized in Chemical and allied process industries such as mass transfer, heat transfer, momentum transfer and mechanical operations. The conventional teaching approach practiced so far in Unit Operations Laboratory course was not so effective in the attainment of certain specific core competencies of Program Outcomes (POs). To tackle this challenge, we introduced a system of classifying laboratory experiments into four distinct categories: Demonstration, Exercise, Structural Inquiry, and Open-ended experiments. These categorized experiments were thoughtfully crafted to target various significant technical and professional outcomes such as Investigations of Complex Engineering Problems, Communication, Life-long learning, Follow of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The evaluation criteria for each type of experiment were aligned with program outcomes, competencies, and performance indicators. This alignment proved highly beneficial in achieving a more precise assessment of program outcomes. This study focuses on implementing an interactive and collaborative learning approach in the Unit Operations laboratory course. of Experiments. More precisely, the study employs Central Composite Design (CCD) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) concepts to examine how various factors influence the Leaching (Solid-Liquid Extraction) process. The leaching process is most important unit operations used in the extraction of substances from solids. The study helped in addressing several important competencies pertaining to the Program Outcomes- PO-4: Demonstrating the capacity to design, execute experiments, and analyze data; PO-10: Exhibiting effective communication skills; PO-12: Embracing lifelong learning; PSO-13: Adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The assessment of student performance employed a rubric-based approach, and the attainment of program outcomes was documented. It was observed that, open-ended experimental approach, led to the improvements in the attainment of PO’s in terms of competencies and performance indicators. To enhance the teaching-learning process, formal and anonymous feedback was gathered from students to identify areas of improvement and deficiencies. Perception of Multimodal Portfolios as a Pedagogical Strategy for Learning Writing in a Digital Context

Active learning is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of higher education's teaching-learning paradigm. In this context, educators serve as facilitators, empowering students to take the lead and assume co-responsibility for their learning. Among the array of active learning strategies available, the portfolio stands out as an instrument that not only aids in knowledge construction but also fosters the development of crucial skills like autonomy and creativity. Furthermore, it serves as an interactive and participatory learning approach that encourages self-assessment and reflection on the teaching-learning journey. Portfolios, through the continual (re)construction of knowledge and ongoing collaborative engagement between students and educators, promote self-regulated learning by progressively fostering students' awareness of their learning process. This study reflects on the pedagogical application of individual portfolios, aiming to explore their role in enhancing writing skills within a digital context and nurturing cross-disciplinary skills highly valued by employers. Specifically, it delves into students' perceptions of the portfolio construction process within the Internet Writing course, a segment of the Master's degree program in Marketing and Digital Communication at the University of Aveiro (Portugal). After a brief examination of active learning strategies, with a specific emphasis on portfolios as tools for self-reflection and learning, the study analyzes questionnaire survey results utilizing SPSS software. The survey was administered to students enrolled in the course to assess the effectiveness of the applied teaching strategy. Lastly, based on the findings, this work identifies potential limitations and suggests strategies for improvement in future implementations.

Bridging the Gap

In the evolving landscape of education, the need for robust Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills has become increasingly paramount, particularly in higher education settings. This research aims to address the existing gap in the effectiveness of training methods employed to enhance these crucial skills among students in Indonesia. To achieve this objective, a qualitative research methodology was employed, involving a detailed analysis of various teaching strategies and their impact on student learning outcomes in STEM subjects. The study involved collecting data through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and review of existing literature on effective teaching methods in STEM education. The findings reveal a significant enhancement in students' STEM skills when exposed to interactive and practical learning approaches, as opposed to traditional lecture-based teaching. These methods include hands-on experiments, problem-based learning, and the integration of technology in classroom settings. The research underscores the importance of adapting teaching methods to cater to different learning styles, emphasizing the role of active learning and engagement in fostering deeper understanding and proficiency in STEM subjects. The results of this study are particularly relevant for educators and curriculum designers in higher education, offering insights into the effective strategies that can bridge the gap in STEM skill acquisition, thus preparing students more effectively for the challenges of the modern workforce.

Enhancing Student Achievement in Senior High School through Curriculum Management in Indonesia

The purpose of this study is to examine student accomplishment, the management of the high school curriculum, and the creation, application, and effects of the curriculum on student achievement. Qualitative research methodologies were employed in this study. Observations and in-depth interviews with educators, school administrators, and other staff members provided the data. A qualitative transcribing approach was employed to examine the data, followed by coding, grouping the key findings of the research, and conclusion. The study's findings indicate that students are on the right track to achieve extraordinary achievements with continuous measurement and evaluation; an interactive learning approach can enhance students' learning experiences, and an educational environment that supports student achievement has been established. Combining these elements has allowed this school to effectively educate its pupils for various competitive and competitive difficulties, making them resilient in the long run. This study emphasizes how important it is for secondary schools to manage their curricula effectively to increase student accomplishment by providing students with relevant, interest-based material. To further improve educational outcomes, interactive learning strategies, more resources, and continuous assessment are helpful.

Enhancing Arabic Learning Outcomes: A Study on the Effectiveness of Think-Pair-Share Model

The results demonstrate a significant enhancement in Arabic learning outcomes, affirming the effectiveness of the Think-Pair-Share model. Enhancing Land Cover Mapping and Monitoring: An Interactive and Explainable Machine Learning Approach Using Google Earth Engine

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been applied to solve various remote sensing problems. To fully leverage the power of AI and ML to tackle impactful remote sensing problems, it is essential to enable researchers and practitioners to understand how AI and ML models actually work and thus to improve the model performance strategically. Accurate and timely land cover maps are essential components for informed land management decision making. To address the ever-increasing need for high spatial and temporal resolution maps, this paper developed an interactive and open-source online tool, in Python, to help interpret and improve the ML models used for land cover mapping with Google Earth Engine (GEE). The tool integrates the workflow of both land cover classification and land cover change dynamics, which requires the generation of a time series of land cover maps. Three feature importance metrics are reported, including impurity-based, permutation-based, and SHAP (Shapley additive explanations) value-based feature importance. Two case studies are presented to showcase the tool’s capability and ease of use, enabling a globally accessible and free convergent application of remote sensing technologies. This tool may inspire researchers to facilitate explainable AI (XAI)-empowered remote sensing applications with GEE.

Data harvesting in uncharted waters: Interactive learning empowered path planning for USV-assisted maritime data collection under fully unknown environments

Unleashing the potential of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for Underwater Internet-of-Things (UIoT) brings forth a vigorous new frontier, unlocking the innovative insights and paving the way towards the era of Smart Ocean. By leveraging the power of USVs, this paper dives into the path planning problem in oceanic data collection, particularly in fully unknown environments. First, by encapsulating the intricacies of USV-sensor communication channel and obstacle avoidance mechanism, a novel path planning model for data collection is meticulously formulated, providing a comprehensive and in-depth portrayal of the underlying dynamics. Secondly, integrating an environmental updating mechanism, an interactive learning approach is intentionally developed to enable USVs to fully exploit and explore the dynamic environments, employing a heuristically defined reward function to generate optimal waypoint sequence for USVs. Catering to the non-holonomic nature of USVs, the fast-discrete Clothoid path is introduced to formulate the USVs’ trajectories, whereby smooth maneuvering is achieved by governing feasible actions under kinematic constraints, maintaining the continuous alteration of curvature and course at turning points. The convergence capability of the method is proved both theoretically and demonstrated numerically. Extensive simulation and comparative evaluations under complex oceanic environments showcase its strong practical applicability, thereby demonstrating the promising potential of this approach in unlocking new opportunities for innovation and exploration in UIoT.

Design, Implementation, and Control of a Linear Electric Actuator for Educational Mechatronics

Kinematics is a fundamental topic in engineering, robotics, mechatronics, and control systems and significantly resolves some of these fields’ most pressing issues. It is essential to assess the balance between a topic’s theoretical framework and its empirical validation to succeed in engineering. Educational tools have gained significant attention for their ability to enhance the learning experience by providing the hands-on experiences necessary to assess theoretical frameworks and empirical validations. This paper presents a system incorporating state-of-the-art features, including a fuzzy controller enabling precise control of a linear actuator and a USB camera, to provide an interactive experience. The USB camera captures the position of the actuator, providing real-time visual feedback and allowing the students to validate their theoretical understanding through practical experiments. Precision, accuracy, resolution, and the implementation of the fuzzy controller are measured to evaluate the whole system’s performance. The design, implementation, and control of our educational electrical linear actuator for teaching kinematics concepts contribute to a practical educational tool and advance interactive learning approaches in the field.

Enhancing Children's Speaking Skills through Pop-Up Book Media: A Classroom Action Research

This study aimed to improve the speaking skills of children by utilizing Pop-Up book media, preceded by developing their listening skills. Conducted at Dharma Wanita Persatuan Pucang Kindergarten, the research employed Classroom Action Research methodology. The pre-cycle results revealed a 51.4% average score for children's speaking ability. However, after implementing the Pop-Up book media in the first cycle, the percentage increased significantly to 68.5%, showing a 12.9% improvement from the maximum score. The researcher continued to apply action in cycle II, leading to a remarkable rise in the average score to 85.3%, signifying an overall enhancement of 28.9% from cycles I and II. The results demonstrate that employing Pop-Up book media effectively enhances children's speaking skills, carrying implications for language skill development in early childhood education.
