THE EDUCATIONAL USE OF INTERACTIVE ELECTRONIC TEXTBOOKS IN PRIMARY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

This article is devoted to the problem of developing foreign language communicative competence of primary school students on the basis of an interactive electronic textbook and provides an example of a training course developed based on an electronic textbook. The specificity of teaching a foreign language lies in the fact that students master the language in an artificial language environment due to the lack of a natural one. New information technologies are not only new technical means, but also new forms and methods of teaching, a new approach to the learning process. This situation involves the widespread use of computer technology and various technical teaching aids. The use of computer technology in foreign language lessons in primary school can be presented in different variations: working with specialized sites, watching authentic videos, etc. А very effective and relatively affordable method for teaching foreign languages is using of the electronic textbook. An electronic textbook allows you to implement the principles of a differentiated and individual approach to learning. Therefore, it is quite natural that in the teaching of a foreign language, new opportunities for using information and communication technologies have found a wide variety of applications. Despite the presence of various approaches to the problem of implementation new learning technologies in primary foreign language education, the educational use of electronic textbooks in primary ELT requires a more complete consideration.

The creation of a digital educational environment at universities, the transition to blended learning have revealed a problem associated with the discrepancy between traditional textbooks, automatically translated into electronic format, the needs of modern students, the peculiarities of their perception. The article proposes forms of educational content that use the possibilities of the digital environment available to students and activate their cognitive activity. Among the distinguishing features of modern students are focus on success, the desire to use knowledge “here and now”, multitasking, but at the same time, superficial attention, unwillingness to study long texts. As new interactive digital resources, the authors consider structural logic diagrams, interactive electronic textbooks, and training tests. The article describes the experience of creating such resources in the process of teaching mathematics to first-year bachelor students of the Financial University.

Developing an Auditing Interactive Electronic Textbook With Google Slide and Quizizz

This research was carried out at an undergraduate Accounting Department in a university at Pekanbaru, Riau. The participants were three auditing experts, an information technology expert, eight lecturers teaching auditing, and 87 students from the auditing department (they took Auditing 1, auditing 2, and auditing practice courses). This study adopted the R D method to develop an Interactive Electronic Textbook (BAEI) for Auditing courses using Google Slides and Quizizz applications. The results revealed that the auditing BAEI was designed to be validated by experts, a lecturers group, and students indicating a high interest in the developed auditing BAEI.

The article substantiates a special approach to the development of a school digital textbook which is based on the idea of synthesis of psychological, didactic, methodological, and subject knowledge with the priority of using the psychic pat- terns of personality development. To denote an interactive electronic textbook, it is proposed to use the term “digital textbook” (DT). From the methodological point of view, DT is regarded as an “enhanced” paper textbook, characterized by such basic properties as interactivity, multimodality, hypertextuality, and personality. The question about the development of the digital textbook concept before the textbook creation is raised. A number of psychological and didactic problems are discussed, such as: 1) the relationship between paper and digital textbooks (an option of the simultaneous use of both textbook formats is proposed); 2) DT as an essential com- ponent of the digital educational environment (the maximum effect is achieved if every DT is integrated into a single system as well as educational environment); 3) the features of reading on screen (non-linear nature, activity and dynamism, superficial understanding, greater fatigue, etc.). Besides, the article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of DT and presents the results of its effectiveness based on the foreign studies. A conclusion was made that the wide-scale introduction of DT is possible solely when its positive influence not only on academic performance, but also on the cognitive development of students is revealed.

GOOGLE SLIDE DAN QUIZIZZ DALAM PENGEMBANGAN BUKU AJAR ‎ELEKTRONIK INTERAKTIF (BAEI) MATEMATIKA

This study aims to determine the attractiveness and feasibility and effectiveness of learning implemented using interactive electronic textbooks (BAEI) assisted by Google slides and quizizz on the matrix material. This research method is research and development (R&D) with the Borg and Gall development model. There are 10 stages in this development namely 1) Potential and problems, 2) Data collection, 3) Product design, 4) Design validation, 5) Design revision, 6) Product trial, 7) Product revision, 8) Trial usage. 9) Product revision, 10) Mass production. Data collection instruments used were questionnaires given to material experts and media experts to determine product viability, and were given to students to find out the attractiveness of products that had been developed as well as pretest and posttest test instruments. The results of data analysis obtained from material experts and media experts stated that teaching materials developed were feasible to be used by obtaining "Valid" criteria with an average score of material experts of 3.76 and media experts of 3.48. Then the students' response to the electronic textbook (BAEI) in small group trials and large group trials (field) obtained the criteria of "Very Attractive" with the average score on the small group trial of 3.28 and the average results the score of large groups (field) is 3.49. The results of the effectiveness test analysis using effect sizes on the pretest and posttest obtained an average score of 0.72 and included in the medium category.

P110 Adoption of an Electronic Textbook with Inclusive Access and Adaptive Learning Reduces DFWI Rate in an Online Introductory Nutrition Course

Objective To determine the impact of switching from a hard copy to an electronic textbook with inclusive access and adaptive learning experiences on the drop, fail, withdraw, incomplete (DFWI) rate in an online undergraduate introductory nutrition course. Use of Theory or Research Earning a D, F, W, or I in a course has a negative effect on a student's progression towards completion of a degree. While enrollment in online courses continues to increase, student retention rates continue to decrease. One strategy suggested to increase retention, and by extension decrease DFWI rates, is using an electronic textbook with computer-based learning resources and activities that promote active learning. Target Audience Undergraduate students enrolled in an online introductory nutrition course at a Midwestern urban university from August 2012-December 2018. Program Description From Fall 2012-Spring 2017, students used a hard copy textbook (HCT). Beginning Fall 2017, students used an interactive electronic textbook (ET) with inclusive (anytime/anywhere) access that included integrated videos, online ability to highlight/take notes, and online adaptive learning-by-doing activities (study guides, diet analysis, meal planning, etc). All semesters used publisher PowerPoint presentations and test bank. Evaluation Methods The data set, with prior approval from the university Institutional Research, Assessment and Testing team, was generated using university DFWI reports. Grade and academic level data from 1034 undergraduate introductory nutrition course students (n = 810; HCT, n = 224; ET) were examined. Results Students in the ET course had statistically significant lower DFWI rates (9.4 ± 2.0%; range 6.1-11.3%) than HCT students (19.8 ± 8.2%; range 9.9-35.1%), P Conclusions Electronic textbooks with inclusive (anytime/anywhere) access on multiple digital platforms facilitate incorporating adaptive learning experiences into courses. Nutrition educators should consider this strategy to foster active student engagement in mastering basic food and nutrition knowledge with the added benefit of decreasing DFWI rates. Funding None.

How can we effectively improve the mathematical capabilities of students of chemistry?

Abstract We describe our extensive collective experience in the conduct of courses based on the use of advanced mathematical software to enhance the capabilities of students of chemistry to solve problems with a mathematical component. These courses have been based on an interactive electronic textbook Mathematics for Chemistry with Symbolic Computation that has been concurrently developed and expanded. The admirable performance of the students who have benefited from our courses leaves no doubt that mathematical software is an invaluable tool for the teaching, learning and practice of mathematics in a chemical context.

Interactive electronic textbook use in higher education: grades, engagement, and student perceptions

A trend towards electronic textbooks (e-textbooks) in higher education has given cause for additional research regarding their effectiveness when compared with traditional print textbooks. There is a lack of research specifically regarding interactive e-textbooks - texts that have been enriched with embedded links, videos, quizzes, or other activities. This study presents the findings from an introductory education course within a large university in the USA that began using an interactive e-textbook as the dominant text for the course. Correlation was measured between student grades and three different elements of an interactive electronic textbook: total time spent logged into the e-textbook, student engagement level, and percent of interactive activities accessed. Student perceptions of the e-textbook were also gathered. Results showed significant positive correlation between overall course grades and two of the three variables tested (time and engagement). Survey results revealed a high level of comfort and convenience using the interactive e-textbook.

Specificity of editorial and publishing training of electronic textbooks for the New Ukrainian School

The article is based on the analysis of ten electronic textbooks for the first grade of the New Ukrainian Schools. It was put to the competition by the publishers and presented in the electronic library of the Institute for the Modernization of the Content of Education (four textbooks «I am exploring the world», three textbooks in art, two electronic and one electronic textbook, textbook «Ukrainian Language. ABC Book. Parts 1 and 2») two models of the editorial and publishing preparation of projects of multimedia interactive electronic textbooks are defined and described. The first is «outsourcing model» which means involvement a technology company or multimedia publishing house in the creating of electronic textbooks. The second is «standalone model» which means independent creation of multimedia electronic textbooks by specialists of traditional publishing who use the specialized third-party software. It’s concluded that the market for interactive multimedia electronic textbooks can develop in several directions: more publishers of printed textbooks enter the market (in case if technological platforms that are available for Ukrainian publishers on the criterion «price – quality» and software for interactive programming will be provided) or filling of the niche of this market by tech companies and digital multimedia publishers (the main example is multimedia publishing house «Розумники» («A Clever Ones»)).

Exploring students learning behavior with an interactive etextbook in computer science courses

We present empirical findings from using an interactive electronic textbook (eTextbook) system named OpenDSA to teach sophomore- and junior-level Computer Science courses. The web-based eTextbook infrastructure allows us to collect large amounts of data that can provide detailed information about students’ study behavior. In particular we were interested in seeing if the students will attempt to manipulate the electronic resources so as to receive credit without deeply going through the materials. We found that a majority of students do not read the text. On the other hand, we found evidence that students voluntarily complete additional exercises (after obtaining credit for completion) as a study aid prior to exams. We determined that visualization use was fairly high (even when credit for their completion was not offered). Skipping to the end of slideshows was more common when credit for their completion was offered, but also occurred when it was not. We measured the level of use of mobile devices for learning by CS students. Almost all students did not associate their mobile devices with studying. The only time they accessed OpenDSA from a mobile device was for a quick look up, and never for in depth study.

Inkling Review

Inkling is an interactive electronic textbook publishing platform for the Apple iPad, iPhone, and, more recently, the Web. The Inkling app for iPad has transformed traditional print textbooks into engaging educational experiences for the end user. Unique features of Inkling include audio and video clips, dynamic images, self-assessments, and social networking, all integrated into the text of the e-book. Inkling textbook titles are available in a variety of disciplines, including medicine, business, travel, technology, arts and photography, and several others. Within the topic of medicine, subcategories of titles available include anatomy, internal medicine, biochemistry, and 15 others. In total, 119 medical titles are currently available.

Supramolecular Chemistry: Computer-Assisted Instruction in Undergraduate and Graduate Chemistry Courses

An interactive electronic textbook (SC-WEB) based on Supramolecular Chemistry, by J.-M. Lehn, is described. It includes the text, which has been specially adapted for teaching, and data on the structures of molecules and supermolecules. The list includes about 100 structures retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database (version 1997) as well as those obtained from molecular dynamics simulations in solution. The structures can be retrieved either from the text or, independently, from the list.SC-WEB uses two types of programs: the first one reads files in HTML format (Word97, Netscape, or Internet Explorer), and WebLab Viewer Lite is used for visualizing and manipulating the structures. It can run on any PC (W95/NT4.0) computer.The application of SC-WEB for a course in supramolecular chemistry, as well as in other chemical courses, is discussed.
