Towards Human Activity-Based Interactive Communication Systems’ Design in Higher Learning Institutions: Study Conducted in Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions

The power of human computer interaction in interactive systems’ design processes is unimaginable as it determines their usability. However, these design processes encounter several challenges which make most of the designed interactive systems, notably in higher learning institutions fail to suitably satisfy targeted users’ needs despite the fact that they are normally designed based on their requirements.
 This study begins by exploring the challenges facing main communication and interaction means used in Tanzania higher learning institutions. The study then provides a review of challenges related to key research areas associated with interactive systems’ design. Based on the reviewed challenges, authors combined design science research with activity theory to come up with suited techniques through which user-involved interactive communication frameworks needed for suitable design of human activity-based interactive communication systems’ can be obtained.
 Based on that approach, authors came up with a suited four phase Design Science Research methodology to be used in designing of applicable frameworks. In its first phase and following a crucial user-centred design process, authors were able to come up with a Human-Activity Design Centred Framework for capturing most of the users’ needs in the design process through activities performed as well as a Human Factors’ Approach to interactive communication systems design in HLIs’.

Human–Robot Interactive Communication and Cognitive Psychology Intelligent Decision System Based on Artificial Intelligence — Case Study

Cognitive psychology is a science of human knowledge, which means that people perceive, acquire, memorize, think, and comprehend intellectual capabilities. The psychological strategy involves controlling every action and status of the human body. The problematic states of psychological facts include mental disorders like depression, stress, anxiety, and inferiority complex, leading to memory loss. The emerged technique of cognitive psychological managing framework using artificial intelligence (CPMF-AI) is introduced. The proposed framework is extended to forecast the psychological standards of the human brain for practical well-being. There are four methods to monitor memory power, stress, and other human mental disorders. They are distant neural systems (DNS), convolutional psychology tracking systems (CPTS), intelligent neural systems (INS), and memory-building strategies (MBS). Besides language aspects, physical aspects play a vital part in human–robot interaction (HRI) and make the difference compared to the more limited HRI communication. These methodologies are integrated into four case studies to detect neural passage systems for monitoring mental issues. The simulation analysis helps enhance the framework’s accuracy and minimize the error rate. Thus, the proposed system of cognitive technology is comparatively better than the existing methods.

Effectiveness of a continuous interactive communication system for home care nursing assistance of peritoneal dialysis

BackgroundThe Japanese population is aging quickly. New methods of supporting peritoneal dialysis (PD) for elderly patients are essential if we are to increase the number of such patients.MethodsWe established a two-way communication system between a central hospital and stations for visiting nurses. Home care nurses provided physicians at the central hospital with clinical findings for patients undergoing assisted PD. We compared 11 patients undergoing PD assisted by home care nurses in continuous interactive communication with the central hospital (cases) with 11 patients undergoing unassisted PD who were matched by sex, primary disease, estimated glomerular filtration rate at the start of PD, and age at the start of PD (controls). The variables compared were hospitalization due to heart failure, exit-site infection, peritonitis, and the composite of these causes during a 1-year period. In addition, we compared patient clinical factors between groups.ResultsAlthough differences in the number of hospitalizations attributable to exit-site infection, peritonitis, and heart failure were not significant, the difference in the number of hospitalizations attributable to a composite of these causes was significant. Exit-site scores were significantly better in the case group than in the control group.ConclusionsPD assisted by home care nurses using an established continuous interactive communication system was associated with significantly better exit-site scores. Fewer cases than controls were hospitalized.

Ontogeny of an interactive call-and-response system in Spix's disc-winged bats

We investigated the ontogenetic changes of two call types, the inquiry call and the response call, which comprise an interactive communication system in Spix's disc-winged bats, Thyroptera tricolor. We documented structural changes on both inquiry and response calls during ontogeny by recording single individual vocalizations in a flight cage and triggering response calls with playbacks of adult inquiry calls. Most ontogenetic changes in response calls were sex dependent. In addition, individuality was high for both call types across age categories. Despite the observed changes during development, both call types resembled the structure of adult calls from early ontogenetic stages, suggesting little influence of social learning in call development. Finally, we found sex dependent ontogenetic changes and high levels of individuality of calls early in life, which may indicate additional functionality in sex and pup recognition. Overall, the findings bring novel insight into the complex developmental process of the call types comprising the communication systems of Spix's disc-winged bats, and contribute to a better understanding of signal development in complex social communication systems.

Telerehabilitation intervention for type 2 diabetes

Diabetes has become an increasingly important health problem worldwide due to its prevalence. Although effective treatments for diabetes management have been developed, many patients have difficulty in achieving their therapeutic goals. Regular exercise training is suggested to prevent or delay the symptoms and complications of type 2 diabetes along with other medical treatments. It has become necessary to develop new rehabilitation models and practices in order to cope with the changing needs of the population. Treatment models using technology can be effective in disease management. Telerehabilitation may be effective as part of the rehabilitation program in the home environment, especially for patients who are unable to participate in conventional center-based rehabilitation due to transport difficulties or work resumption. Telerehabilitation is defined as the delivery of rehabilitation services via telecommunication technology, including phone, internet, and videoconference communications between the patient and health care provider. It is possible that telerehabilitation may benefit people with type 2 diabetes in similar ways with telemonitoring and interactive health communication systems. Although the applicability of telehealth methods has been proven in previous studies, telerehabi-litation studies in type 2 diabetes are inadequate in the literature. With larger, multi-centered randomized controlled studies, established clinical guidelines can be developed that will ultimately improve patient outcomes.

The Hidden Costs of Requiring Accounts: Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Peer Production

Online communities, like Wikipedia, produce valuable public information goods. Whereas some of these communities require would-be contributors to create accounts, many do not. Does this requirement catalyze cooperation or inhibit participation? Prior research provides divergent predictions but little causal evidence. We conduct an empirical test using longitudinal data from 136 natural experiments where would-be contributors to wikis were suddenly required to log in to contribute. Requiring accounts leads to a small increase in account creation, but reduces both high- and low-quality contributions from registered and unregistered participants. Although the change deters a large portion of low-quality participation, the vast majority of deterred contributions are of higher quality. We conclude that requiring accounts introduces an undertheorized tradeoff for public goods production in interactive communication systems.

EFFICACY OF INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Background: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is one of the forerunners of diabetes and by its merit demands close surveillance so that early lifestyle changes and preventive programs are instituted. Hence targeted management using effective interactive communication system becomes imperative to combat the phenomenal increase of glucose intolerance in gestation. Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. Seshiah Diabetes Specialties Centre, Chennai and gestational follow-up until delivery was carried out for 900 pregnant women. A diabetes protocol was developed to maintain a complete record of their clinical assessment every month. The clinical management of GDM was done in 3 stages namely during gestation, immediate postpartum and after delivery through effective communication techniques like lecture method, computer-aided counselling, power point presentations, brochures, individual and family counselling, postpartum follow-up through postpartum follow-up module and counselling prospective mothers through audio-visual aids. The impact of dietary intervention given to the pregnant women under follow-up was studied in two folds: Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) study and estimation of their glycemic level before and after intervention. The glycemic levels before and after intervention was tested for significance level using t test and effect of risk factors on gestational glycemia was tested using multiple regression analysis. Results: The targeted management through interactive counselling and education communication proved effective as maternal glucose was well controlled during gestation and encouraged postpartum screening. Nutrition intervention proved effective in bringing down their energy intake and improved their glycemic level. The post counselling scores in KAP showed significant improvement. Conclusion: GDM may well be incurred in future as an open window of opportunity for prevention, rather than a closed door of bleak outcomes. Increasing awareness of GDM, appropriate timing and methodology of screening, ante partum and postpartum precautionary measures employed through efficient communication strategies in a meaningful way would be a “wake-up” call for the increasing burden of the disease.

Psychological and pedagogical factors influencing the process of building professional competence in English oral interaction of prospective military officers

The article dwells on psychological and pedagogical factors influencing the process of building professional competence in English oral interaction of prospective military officers. It is noticed that consideration of psychological characteristics of third-year university cadets is carried out in parallel with the development of their creative abilities, motivation, world outlook, self-esteem, and emotionality. That is why in order to enhance the emotional factor within the framework of the methodology designed to build professional competence in English oral interaction the author suggests using video materials in simulation format of the so-called live-talk video chat (video chat in real time). The necessity of applying learner centered approach to teaching English oral interaction to prospective military officers as active personalities, as well as adherence to the basic principles of communicative method of building professional competence in English oral interaction of prospective military officers with the use of multimodal learning tools based on the interactive communication and visual sensory system are substantiated in this paper. The multimodal learning tools as facilitating visual aids improve perception of professional English authentic videos and unload human memory. The results of the questionnaire surveys held among cadets of Kyiv Military Institute of Telecommunications and Informatisation named after Heroiv Krut and Serhii Koroliov Zhytomyr Military Institute showed that 56% of respondents indicated that professional English oral interaction caused the greatest difficulties in the English classroom, 28% of cadets had difficulty in perceiving foreign language aurally. The least difficulty arose in the process of doing individual grammar exercises and reading professional texts (23% and 8% of cadets respectively). These data testify the relevance of implementing the activity component of learner centered approach to building cadets’ competence in English oral interaction basing on the key principles of the communicative method.

Comparison of multimedia communications QoE models by Bayesian networks and Bayesian statistics: a case study

This paper presents a comparison of Bayesian Network (BN) and Bayesian Statistics (BS) modeling for QoE (Quality of Experience) estimation and prediction in multimedia communications, with special attention to prediction. As an example of the comparison, we employ a haptic-audiovisual interactive communication system with guaranteed bandwidth. The QoE measure adopted here is subjects’ overall satisfaction (average score) of performing an interactive task under conditions specified by combinations of the video guaranteed bandwidth, video encoding bit rate, receiver’s playout buffering time and gender of each subject. For BN modeling, we utilize an R package bnlearn and create a discrete BN model of a directed acyclic graph with four nodes corresponding to the four parameters. For BS modeling, we build (1) a Bayesian hierarchical regression model with covariates of the four parameters and random effect terms reflecting users’ individualities and gender, and (2) a Bayesian regression model without the random effect terms. The two BS models are analyzed by Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation with the software OpenBUGS. We then find that the BN and BS models provide approximately the same estimates of the QoE measure. Regarding the prediction, however, the BS model with random effect terms outperforms the BN model and BS model without random effect terms. We thus learn that the random effect terms enhance the ability of Bayesian approaches in QoE prediction.

Promoting Professional Conversation Skills through Interactive Communication Systems – Basics of Theory and the Practical Applications

The article deals with the enhancement of job-related conversational competence through the use of interactive communication systems in digitally supported teaching of German as a foreign or second language. It focuses on whether and how far learning platforms can contribute to the development of work-related conversational competence if they are equipped with interactive communication systems (chatbots or voicebots) that simulate face-to-face interaction. The first part is devoted to terminological clarification; based on this, the second part discusses how interactive communication systems (talking chatbots) can be set up for vocational DaF/DaZ instruction. Finally, a method is proposed to develop effective task formats for LCMS courses.

Distributed Optimal Random Access Scheme for Energy Harvesting Devices in Satellite Communication Networks.

This paper considers satellite communication networks where each satellite terminal is equipped with energy harvesting (EH) devices to supply energy continuously, and randomly transmits bursty packets to a geostationary satellite over a shared wireless channel. Packet replicas combined with a successive iteration cancellation scheme can reduce the negative impact of packet collisions but consume more energy. Hence, appropriate energy management policies are required to mitigate the adverse effect of energy outages. Although centralized access schemes can provide better performance on the networks’ throughput, they expend extra signallings to allocate the resources, which leads to non-negligible communication latencies, especially for the satellite communication networks. In order to reduce the communication overhead and delay, a distributed random access (RA) scheme considering the energy constraints is studied. Each EH satellite terminal (EH-ST) decides whether to transmit the packet and how many replicas are transmitted according to its local energy and EH rates to maximize the average long-term network throughput. Owing to the nonconvexity of this problem, we adopted a game theoretic method to approximate the optimal solution. By forcing all the EH-STs to employ the same policy, we characterized and proved the existence and uniqueness of the symmetric Nash equilibrium (NE) of the game. Moreover, an efficient algorithm is proposed to calculate the symmetric NE by combining a policy iteration algorithm and the bisection method. The performance of the proposed RA scheme was investigated via numerous simulations. Simulation results showed that the proposed RA scheme is applicable to the EH devices in the future low-cost interactive satellite communication system.

Towards A Supranational Media Theory

Satellite systems and the Internet have created a significant alternative that undermines the traditional reporting approach and triggered the search for a new order in mass communication. Instant and interactive data transfer systems have transformed local users into global readers and reporters encouraging a trend of democratization relative to freedom of thought and expression. Content providers and distributors in the traditional news industry which is televisions, magazines, radios, newspapers, online platforms, have a wide range of freedom to reach people. Consumers who use interactive mass communication systems have opportunities to interact with the content that is produced in many different centers. However, in the presence of the media defined as a mechanism that manufactures the consent of people for certain ideas, no matter if they are traditional or novel, people sometimes take the position of a buyer or an activist who takes action for a project and sometimes a part of a group of insusceptible people. People think their consent is their freewill without noticing that it is just a product. They feel a sense of gratitude to the ruling elites without noticing that they are the subjects of a social experiment and under the hypnotic influence of the media. Even though the world societies are getting the same content using the same communication technologies thanks to supranational media companies. Particularly because of content created to convey a message, social differences become more explicit and radical rather than the values in common. That’s why conflicts are incited. At the heart of the majority of new media organization debates, the existence of this problematic information lies. This article, which has been prepared with an analytical approach based on a literature review, discusses the theoretical conditions and the possibility of a new supranational media structure that world citizens need as a source of information. The philosophical basis of the supranational media ideal in question is at the heart of cosmopolitan individuals and eternal peace ideals of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The present media are unable to produce content that doesn’t try to convey a message as it positions individuals as “consumers or user” rather than “people”. Here, supranational media depicting theoretical conditions doesn’t seek profit. It introduces individuals and cultures with their diverse social layers in the consciousness of being a cosmopolitan. Supranational media’s output is based on notions like science, rights and freedoms, the earth, coexistence, and "humanity”.

In this paper the following topics will be covered: business-to-business (B2B) communication aspects, chatbots and their usage as a tool for providing businesses with ability to interact more efficiently with their clients (B2B and B2C interactions), and discussion of chatbot creation platforms that support Facebook and integrate in social network's environment. Current work represents an analysis of three chatbot creation and management web platforms: Chatfuel, ManyChat and "It's Alive!". After that, this work gives comparative analysis of each of these platforms' capabilities, strengths and limitations.

Most of the deaf students easily learn and develop skill and knowledge in e-learning method. Now a day’s e-learning tools are mostly used in learning method. E-learning includes computer and electronically supported learning and teaching methods. E-learning used in Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual based learning and digital technology. In this paper we study which type of sign language is best for learning.

How Cancer Patients Use and Benefit from an Interactive Cancer Communication System

Despite the mounting evidence of efficacy of eHealth interventions, their mechanisms of action remain unknown. The current study analyzed patient log data as each patient engaged in an eHealth system called the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) and reports on how patients engage with different combinations of eHealth services over time. Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients (N = 443) were given access for 6 months to one of four different configurations of CHESS: (1) Information, (2) Information and Support, (3) Information, Support, and Coaching (Full CHESS), and (4) Full CHESS and Mentor. Besides a baseline survey, three follow-up posttests were administered. Action log data on how patients engaged with the CHESS were also collected and merged with surveys to examine how patients benefit during the cancer experience. The findings suggest that usage patterns were not competitive, implying that cancer patients’ access to more complex tools generates more use with their time spreading out over the diverse services. Despite overall decline in usage rates, it was less severe in Full CHESS and Mentor condition, suggesting that communication functions drive long-term engagement with the system. Notably, the strongest relation between use and cancer information competence appeared late in the follow-up period.

Bayesian Hierarchical Regression Models for QoE Estimation and Prediction in Audiovisual Communications

This paper presents a trial of establishing a framework for Bayesian statistical modeling of quality of experience (QoE) estimation and prediction in multimedia IP communications. As an example, we take a bandwidth guaranteed interactive audiovisual communication system with a QoE enhancement mechanism. By Bayesian statistical analysis, we demonstrate how QoE is affected by factors of the channel bandwidth, contents of tasks, customization of playout buffering control for QoE enhancement, users' individualities, and gender. Adopting a latent variable approach, we build Bayesian regression models with covariates of the factors and random effect terms having hierarchical priors for the users' attributes. We estimate the posterior probabilities of parameters in the models by performing Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations with WinBUGS. From among the models, we select the most plausible one and explore the sensitivity to priors. We then evaluate the QoE measure, which is the posterior mean of overall satisfaction measured as five-point scores, and examine the effects of the factors on the QoE through odds ratios. Also, the Bayesian model makes predictions of score frequencies and compares them with measured ones to reveal high accuracy of the prediction. In addition, a cross-validatory approach to the model checking is taken for investigating the adequacy of the model; the posterior predictive p-values of a discrepancy function of the model indicate that the model is satisfactory.
