Iron(III) complexes of sodium 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde dithiocarbazonate, a possible chelating agent for the treatment of iron overload

The 1:2 complexes of iron(III) with sodium 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde dithiocarbazonate of the formula Fe(PD) 2X (where PD is 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde dithiocarbazonate anion, and X − = Cl −, NO 3 −, N 3 − and NCS −) have been prepared by interaction of iron(III) ions with NaPD (1:2), in the presence of an appropriate anion. They show molar conductance values of 33.0 to 55.2 mhos cm 2 mol −1 in DMF solution. These data indicate that the anions of FE(PD) 2X are associated in the first coordination sphere of Fe(III) to a different extent in DMF solution. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectral data of FE(PD) 2X in DMF solution also support the different extent of coordination of anions to Fe(III). The Fe(PD) 2X complexes in the solid state have low spin iron(III) with μ eff values varying from 1.95 to 2.35 BM. The EPR data of the iron(III) complexes in frozen DMF also support their low-spin nature. These data also show that all complexes have rhombic symmetry except the azide complexes which have axial symmetry. The EPR and infrared spectral data of iron(III) complexes also suggest that the anions of these complexes are associated in the first coordination sphere of iron(III) in the solid state. The association of anions in the Fe(PD) 2X complexes may suggest their geometry to be capped octahedron or pentagonal bipyramid. It has been suggested that one of the most important factors for efficiently removing iron from iron loaded mice is the formation of kinetically inert low-spin iron(III) complexes between iron(III) ions and tridentate chelating agents in the ratio of 1:2.

Structural Chemistry Studies of Hydroxyanthraquinone Complexes

Abstract The interaction of iron(II), iron(III) cobalt(II), nickel(II), copper(II), palladium(II) and platinum(IV) salts with some chelating hydroxyanthraquinone ligands was investigated. Nineteen solid complexes were synthesized and were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and electronic spectra and pH and conductance measurements. These complexes were nonconducting. The iron(III) complexes were of octahedral geometry but are subject to some distortion. The ligand dissociation constants and the stability constants of the complexes were evaluated.

A novel polynuclear iron(III) mixed ligand complex for use in parenteral iron therapy

A novel, water soluble, electrically neutral polynuclear iron(III) mixed ligand complex has been prepared for use in parenteral iron therapy. The composition of the new compound has been determined by preparative and analytical methods. Osmomotic pressure measurements have shown its polymeric nature. The complex molecule has a composition of Fe 8L 2D 2AcO(OH) 19 where L denotes the lactiobionate ion, D stands for one glucopyranose unit of dextrane and Ac is the acetate ion. Iron(III) acetate is the starting material in the preparation of the complex. The acetate neutralises the protons liberated in the interaction of iron(III) and the ligands and the acetic acid formed in this reaction is removed by steam distillation. An aqueous solution of 1.8 mol dm −3 iron concentration was prepared which has an osmotic pressure below 300 mosmol.

Interactions of iron(II) and iron(III) with gallic acid and its homologues: a potentiometric and spectrophotometric study

The reactions between iron(III) and the phenols gallic acid, catechol, protocatechuic acid and pyrogallol have been studied in aqueous solution at 25�C (I 0.10 M KCl). From spectrophotometric and pH titration data it was established that (i) complexes with 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 (M : L) stoichiometry are formed in oxygenated solution, (ii) the redox reaction given at low pH by these ligands Fe3+ + �phenol → Fe2+ + �quinone + H+ is not reversed by complexing of Fe3+ at higher pH, and (iii) the percentage composition of iron(II) and iron(III) in solutions of these ligands is a function of ER (ligand), the pH and age of solutions and the partial pressure of dissolved oxygen.

Iron(III)-phosphoprotein chelates: stoichiometric equilibrium constant for interaction of iron(III) and phosphorylserine residues of phosvitin and casein

Estimates of the strength of iron binding to model phosphoproteins were obtained from equilibrium dialysis experiments. Iron-free phosvitin (chicken and frog) or alpha sl-casein (cow) was dialyzed against the iron(III) chelates of nitrilotriacetate (NTA), )ethylenedinitrilo)tetraacetate (EDTA), or citrate. Protein-bound metal was measured at equilibrium; competition of chelator and phosphoprotein for iron(III) was determined by reference to comprehensive equilibrium equations presented in the Appendix. Analysis of the iron-binding data for phosvitin suggested that clusters of di-O-phosphorylserine residues (SerP.SerP) were the most probable iron-binding sites. A stoichiometric equilibrium constant of 10(18.0) was calculated for the formation of the Fe3+(SerP.SerP) chelate. When comared on the basis of phosphate content, casein bound iron more weakly than phosvitin. However, if the stoichiometric equilibrium constant for the formation of the casein Fe3+(SerP.SerP) chelate (10(17.5) was adjusted to account for the fact that a smaller percentage of casein phosphoserines occurs in di-O-phosphorylserine clusters, the affinity of casein and phosvitin for iron was very similar. A theoretical comparison showed that the "strengths" of the ferric chelates can be ranked: EDTA greater than phosphoprotein di-O-phosphorylserine greater than citrate greater than NTA.

3-phenyl-5-isoxazolon-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester as a selective reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of iron(III)

The red complex developed on interaction of iron(III) with 3-phenyl-5-isoxazolon-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester in the pH range 2–5 can be extracted into methyl isobutyl carbinol. Based on this, a selective and rapid method for the spectrophotometric determination of traces of iron has been developed. The complex has an absorption maximum at 490 nm. Beer's law is followed up to 15.0 ppm of iron. The molar absorptivity is 4.2 × 10 3 l.mole −1. cm −1. None of the common ions interferes in the determination of iron, even though present in large excess.

The interaction of silicic acid with iron(III) and uranyl ions in dilute aqueous solution

The interaction of iron(III) and uranyl ions with dissolved silica is studied by a spectrophotometric technique. The interaction with iron is studied as a function of the degree of polymerization of the silica. For uranyl ion, a complex with monomeric silica is inferred. An equilibrium constant p Q 1 ∼ 2·0 for the equilibrium UO 2 2+ + Si(OH) 4 = UO 2SiO(OH) 3 1+ + H + is measured.

Reactions between iron (III) ions and glassy polyphosphates

Potentiometric and conductometric titrations support chemical evidence that the compound obtained by the interaction of iron (III) ions with a glassy polyphosphate anion is a basic ferric metaphosphate, Fe 2(OH)(PO 3) 5. The formation of a soluble sodium ferripolyphosphate complex in the presence of excess polyphosphate was also confirmed by pH and conductance titrations. The spectrum of the complex ferripolyphosphate solutions was studied in the visible range and was found to have three well-defined peaks. By combining data from the conductance studies with the interpretation of the spectrum, we postulate a structure for the soluble ferripolyphosphate complex in which the iron (III) ion is surrounded by oxygen atoms from two adjacent polyphosphate anion chains.
