Driving Behaviour Research for Autonomous Vehicle Interaction Design: A Comprehensive Review and Future Directions

Despite the crucial role of driving behaviour research in shaping autonomous vehicle interaction design, the current state of their deep integration remains unexplored, constraining the design innovative of autonomous vehicle. This study conducted a systematic review by analysing 320 publications from 2003 to 2023 following PRISMA guidelines. Initially, the research evolution trajectory was depicted through performance analysis, followed by exploring dynamic research themes using scientific mapping. The results reveal the pivotal role of driving behaviour research in fostering innovative practices within autonomous vehicle interaction design and the evolution of thematic content. Three future directions are identified: behaviour insights of diverse interactive entities, all-in-one design solutions, and mixed-reality design evaluation tools. These findings provide practical guidance for utilizing driving behaviour research to foster innovation in AV interaction design, thereby accelerating the socialization of AVs and the transformation towards intelligent mobility.

Research and Application of Emotion-Based Digital Museum Interaction Design

With the rapid advancement of the era, people's lives have become increasingly rich and exciting, leading to corresponding changes in the way museums are visited, making digital museums highly favored by the public. Digital museums rely on digital technology to process exhibition information, transforming complex textual information into images or audiovisual content, thereby enhancing the attractiveness of museums. Currently, technologies such as holographic projection and virtual reality (VR) have enriched visitors' sensory experiences, to the extent that emotional experiences have gained increased attention in digital museums. In view of this, this paper aims to discuss the significance of emotional experiences in digital museum interaction design, and explore the impact of emotional experiences on digital museum interactions. It also investigates the research and application of emotion-based digital museum interaction design, with the hope of promoting the development of digital museums.

Research on Visualization and Interactive Design of Plant Configuration Virtual Reality in the Context of Digitalization

This study aims to explore the application of digital technology in landscape design, focusing on the research of virtual reality visualization and interactive design in the process of plant configuration. Through an in-depth analysis of digital technology, the study outlines its important role in landscape design, especially in the application of plant configuration. The current application status of virtual reality technology in landscape design is discussed, as well as how interactive design can enhance user experience and participation. Furthermore, the achievements and challenges of digital technology in landscape design are summarized. Finally, it proposes future research directions and suggestions, aiming to provide new ideas and methods for practice and research in the field of landscape design and promote the further application and development of digital technology in landscape design.

Networking concert halls, musicians, and interactive textiles: Interwoven Sound Spaces

ABSTRACT Interwoven Sound Spaces is an interdisciplinary project which brought together telematic music performance, interactive textiles, interaction design, and artistic research. A team of researchers collaborated with two professional contemporary music ensembles based in Berlin, Germany, and Piteå, Sweden, and four composers, with the aim of creating a telematic distributed concert taking place simultaneously in two concert halls and online. Central to the project was the development of interactive textiles capable of sensing the musicians’ movements while playing acoustic instruments, and generating data the composers used in their works. Musicians, instruments, textiles, sounds, halls, and data formed a network of entities and agencies that was reconfigured for each piece, showing how networked music practice enables distinctive musicking techniques. We describe each part of the project and report on a research interview conducted with one of the composers for the purpose of analysing the creative approaches she adopted for composing her piece.

Innovation research of Application interaction design based on regional characteristics

With the development of mobile Internet in China and the popularity of mobile phones and various mobile devices, the demand for APP interaction design is becoming more and more common. China’s APP interface design industry started late, and a large number of international and standardized design styles have occupied the APP application market. Chinese traditional culture is extensive and profound, with rich cultural connotation and historical deposits. How to apply traditional cultural elements to APP interactive interface design and how to display traditional culture through APP interaction are the topics we want to study. We should give traditional Chinese culture vitality in the new era, and integrate it into the interactive interface of modern apps, so that traditional Chinese culture can be more widely inherited and carried forward.

Research on Visual and Interactive Evaluation Methods for Space Design Based on Virtual Reality Technology

Abstract This paper establishes different detail-level terrain grids for different terrain data blocks and generates multi-resolution terrain based on the tree-structured LOD model as a way of layering large-scale terrain data. Then, the virtual environment’s visual and image texture are rendered to visualize the virtual spatial environment. Then, the overall architecture of the interaction platform was designed, and the virtual space design visualization and interaction effects were studied based on spatial distance perception, presence experience perception, and error analysis. The results show that there is a significant difference between the mean value of people’s perceived satisfaction in the interaction space and non-interaction space M=163.138, t=1.376, p=0.005<0.05. The error in the interaction of the system in this paper is between (0.2 and 1.8), which indicates that the system performs well. This study of interaction design research proposes a new research dimension for the traditional interaction interface based on virtual reality technology, which provides an effective reference basis for future related designs.

An Online Interactive Model of University English Based on Comprehensive Evaluation Models

Abstract This paper combines the theory of multiple interactive teaching modes in the process of college English online teaching and constructs an interactive model of English online teaching from three dimensions: teacher-student interaction, student-student interaction, and human-computer interaction. Secondly, the learner portrait structure in the E-GPPE-C model was designed from the three dimensions of basic characteristics, behaviors, and outcomes. According to the planned group learning path, an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to generate a personalized learning path. To divide the learning community, the group of learners is clustered using the mean clustering algorithm. Finally, three rounds of teaching practice were conducted to verify the effectiveness of this interactive teaching model. The results show that the ratio of verbal interaction between teachers and students after the use of the strategy of constructing learner profiles increased to 0.9 compared with the previous 0.1. The correlation coefficient between personalized learning and learning self-regulation is 0.682, and significant correlations all present a significant correlation at the 0.01 level. This paper provides lessons and references for further research and development of smart interactive instructional design in colleges and universities.

An Overview of Minimally Invasive Surgery Robots from the Perspective of Human–Computer Interaction Design

In order to streamline and summarize the status quo of human–computer interaction (HCI) design research in minimally invasive surgery robots, and to inspire and promote in-depth design research in related fields, this study utilizes literature research methods, inductive summarizing methods, and comparative analysis methods to analyze and organize the usage scenarios, users, interaction content and form, and relevant design methods of minimally invasive surgery robots, with the purpose of arriving at a review. Through a summary method, this study will obtain outcomes such as design requirements, interaction information classification, and the advantages and disadvantages of different interaction forms, and then make predictions of future trends in this field. Research findings show that the HCI design in the relevant field display a highly intelligent, human-centered, and multimodal development trend through the application of cutting-edge technology, taking full account of work efficiency and user needs. However, meanwhile, there are problems such as the absence of guidance by a systematic user knowledge framework and incomplete design evaluation factors, which need to be supplemented and improved by researchers in related fields in the future.

Interactive Murals: New Interactions and Educational Opportunities for Diverse Youth

Interactive murals integrate electronics into traditional murals to create a new kind of public art as well as a new kind of large-scale and community-situated technology. This article introduces interactive murals along with a set of activities designed to engage young people in technology and the arts. We describe the process and outcome of workshops in which a muralist, two interaction design researchers, and a group of diverse teenagers designed and built a large-scale interactive mural on the exterior wall of a local building.

Think-4-EmCoDe framework: Highlighting key qualities in embodied co-design techniques for children

Embodied, co-design and children-specific methods have been gaining traction in Interaction Design for Children, and their potential and benefits are well-established. Yet methods at the intersection of all three areas are scarcer. In addition, design researchers lack tools for the analysis and adaptation of existing methods, and the creation of new ones to suit the particularities of the design project at hand. Here, we present the Think-4-EmCoDe framework for the design and analysis of embodied co-design methods and techniques for children, which foregrounds key qualities in embodied interaction design research: (1) embodied awareness; (2) reflective imaginary; (3) emergence; (4) embodied memory; (5) situated relationality; (6) contingency; (7) playful engagement; (8) play practice; (9) developmental scaffolds; and (10) social dialogue. The framework has been developed drawing from several theories, methods, and frameworks in the areas of co-design and embodied design approaches. This framework allows designers to focus on both general design qualities for embodied experiences and the specific child perspective. We illustrate the use of the framework through the analysis of three design techniques and discuss its potential as an inspirational tool to understand, adapt and refine embodied co-design techniques for children.

Design and empirical evaluation of a multitouch interaction game-like app for fostering early embodied math learning

The ubiquity of mobile devices has made mobile touchscreen interaction a promising avenue for learning. Although children start using educational apps from early age, only a few apps adhere to interaction design recommendations and undergo empirical evaluation of their educational potential. In this paper, we describe the concept and design of an app developed for promoting early math learning through finger-based multi-touch interactions in kindergarten children. Drawing from research on embodied cognition, our app provides games for fostering finger counting as well as finger-based representation of cardinal magnitude and part-whole relations. The app's efficiency was empirically evaluated through a pre-post-intervention study design with two control conditions. Results revealed that a short-term intervention with the math app did not significantly improve children's math skills when compared to learning gains of both a content-matched, unplugged math training program and a passive, waiting list control group. We discuss possible methodological reasons underlying these results, considering key curricular differences for the effectiveness of app-based interventions in early childhood education. Finally, we reflect on the appropriateness of complex multitouch interaction for young kindergarten children and suggest future directions for research in child-centered interaction design.

Creating room for citizen perspectives in ‘smart city’ Amsterdam through interactive theatre

The ‘smart city’ vision is popular, but it lacks citizen perspectives. The aim of this study was to gain insight into whether and how art-based citizen engagement can create more room for citizen perspectives in smart cities by developing and testing an art-based citizen engagement project in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. To that end, a combination of interactive theatre, interaction design and social research methods was used to bring together diverse publics and innovation professionals for joint exploration of increased dataveillance in cities. The events were studied through observations, and through interviews with participants and organisers. Data analysis was guided by the outcomes, processes and challenges of the responsible innovation dimensions: inclusion, reflexivity, anticipation and responsiveness (Stilgoe et al., 2013). The most important achievements of art-based citizen engagement were: engaging people who would not have engaged with the topic otherwise, encouraging participants to question common phrases and assumptions, exploring future social implications of technologies, and staging meaningful interactions between citizens and professionals. The most significant challenge was to involve citizens in a way that could influence innovation trajectories.

A Biocentric Perspective on HCI Design Research Involving Plants

HCI researchers increasingly involve plants in their interaction design research, such as using plants as novel interfaces or sensors. While research involving other living entities, namely humans and animals is regulated, there exists no guidance for plants involved in HCI research. Motivated by biocentric philosophy, the present article makes a first attempt at addressing this gap. Commencing with a review of the development of research ethics, we show that as ethical concern has expanded from humans to animals, there is an argument for its expansion to plants. Through the lens of Respect for Nature, we then review the state-of-the-art in HCI design research involving plants. Our focus lies with ethics in the process of conducting research and its implications for the plants involved. We derive a set of actionable ethical design considerations for researchers involving plants in their interaction design work. Finally, our work aims to stimulate discussion on the involvement of plants in interaction design research.

An exploratory study: Using adapted interactive research design and contributive research method

This paper describes a nuanced methodological approach that responds to the notion that knowledge is socially positioned. MethodFour researchers sought to answer: How can Contributive Research Method be employed in a workshop with participants to build knowledge, provide trustworthy data collection, and leverage the opportunity to revise open content? Using an Adapted Interactive Model of Research Design (adapted from Maxwell, 2009) for engaging in the Contributive Research Method (Puig et al., 2018), data was gathered from an online satellite event, involving 34 institutions from Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Of the 97 participants, 57 contributed data. The presentation utilized digital tools (Mentimeter, and Hypothes.is) with an online learning community to promote the wellbeing of librarians. ResultsAn Adapted Interactive Research Design (AIRD) together with a Contributive Research Method (CRM) (Puig et al., 2018) and CAST analysis (AIRD with CRM + CAST) were effective as a nuanced research design. ConclusionsContributive Research creates an opportunity to truly blend research with the scholarship of learning and teaching where it could be used in Higher Education during lectures and potentially in classrooms. Findings contribute to the body of literature on methodology and may be applicable to similar studies.

Application and Research of Interactive Design in the Creative Expression Process of Public Space

The 21st century is an era full of opportunities and challenges for the media industry, the new media form has been unprecedentedly expanded, and the innovators who have a forward-looking vision try to break the traditional mode of information dissemination. The one-way information dissemination mode of traditional media cannot fully satisfy the needs of the public in the information age, and the design form of public space should no longer be tied to traditional media attributes. The interactive characteristics of new media is used to guide the audience to participate in the communication and interaction, which can effectively arouse the audience's resonance and meet the audience's demand for information reception and feedback. This paper starts with the background of the definition of new media, the interactive characteristics of new media and the public space art, focuses on interactive design thinking and interactive design method, provides guidance for the creative expression process of new media public space.

An Empirical Study on the Influence of Smart Home Interface Design on the Interaction Performance of the Elderly.

The concept of the smart home has been widely recognized and accepted, but the differentiated characteristics of elderly smart products in terms of demand and use are becoming more and more prominent. The lack of an efficient navigation design of the smart product interface increases the cognitive burden of elderly users, and how to better meet the needs of the elderly with smart products gradually becomes the focus of attention. This study was conducted for the elderly group, using the scenario-based design method to analyze the needs of elderly users, combining the research results of scenario theory with the smart home interaction design research method, focusing on how to make the style of interface navigation, sliding layout and button size more suitable for the cognitive behavior of elderly users. The purpose of this research is to realize an age-friendly smart home interaction design in terms of functional design and interface design. The experiment is divided into two stages: in stage 1, two different layouts and operation methods are commonly used for the age-friendly smart home interface: up and down sliding and left and right sliding; in stage 2, the functional buttons are square, where 4 styles are selected, and the side lengths are set to 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm and 22 mm. The sliding and retrieval test and retrieval and click test results show that for different sliding layout methods, the interactive performance and subjective evaluation of the interface with the up-and-down sliding layout are better. Among all functional button styles, the interaction performance and subjective evaluation of the simple button style with lines are the best. Among the function keys with a size of 10–22 mm, the interaction performance is better from 12 mm to 18 mm. The conclusion of the better interface data information obtained from this experiment improves the rationality of the age-friendly smart home interface and makes the smart home interface better for the age-friendly scenario.

Curricula Design & Pedagogy for Sketching Within HCI & UX Education

Sketching is recognised as an important tool in the journey of research and practical processes of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and User Experience Design (UX). However, it is not always included in higher education curriculum, in which HCI and UX is often a single module in one year group amongst more “traditional” approaches in computer science. The benefits of sketching and visualisation practice can be used by students across the board in computing degrees, but especially so within HCI and UX, where novel approaches and ideation are valued and practiced. By the time learners leave higher education, they may or may not have engaged with this valuable skill. HCI has a lot in common with UX, and the two are commonly conflated to be the same thing, though despite this, there is not a focus on practical sketching and visualisation skills. In comparison, within the UX workplace environment, sketching is part of design thinking and vital for the structuring of ideas, storyboards, user journey maps and more. We focus on the incorporation and exploration of sketching as an educational tool, technique and output within HCI, and how this learning is given and received over a number of contexts. This paper outlines case studies where sketching has been included in both formal and informal learning with both undergraduate, postgraduate, and post education populations, and how this knowledge exchange has been both enhanced and changed by the recent compulsory move to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. We discuss practice and learning in the context of four case studies:Data-Sketching in a First Year Minor; Sketching in a 2nd Year HCI Cohort; Sketching as a Foundational Tool for MSc User Experience Design;and,Sketching in HCI for Peer-to-Peer Learning. Further, we make recommendations for incorporating sketching practice and theory into both undergraduate and postgraduate university programs, as well as for peer-to-peer learning in both public and private contexts.

Usability testing of the first prototype of the Memento system: a technological device to promote an independent living in people with dementia

Purpose Assistive technologies have the potential for supporting people with memory complaints in their daily life. User-centered interaction design research helps developers to create systems that are suitable for users. The aim of this work is to describe the methodology and the results of the usability test for the first Memento prototype involving users. Materials and methods In each country, 5 subjects with different levels of cognitive reserve and technical proficiency were enrolled in Italy, Austria and Spain, respectively (15 subjects; 6 M; 9 F, age 72.8 ± 10.8 years, MMSE score 25.6 ± 1.6). Observation methods, performance metrics and the System Usability Scale were used to collect data. Results The results are presented in terms of design, technical problems, target-group-related challenges and usability perception from the participant perspective. Suggestions for improvement were pointed out by the users. Considering the usability scores interpretation, the first prototype was classified as “OK” and “Good” by users. Conclusions The results of the Lab Trials provide important information on usability and the users’ needs in order to improve the Memento prototype and to create a final system to be evaluated during the Field Trials phase of the project. Implication for rehabilitation The MEMENTO project mission is to improve the quality of life of people in the early and middle stages of dementia, by supporting the management of daily activities that are usually affected by the loss of memory and cognition. The Lab Trial phase is essential to have feedback on the usability of the Memento prototype to allow a better understanding of users' needs and expectations.
